Back home, YN ran towards the stairs.
“How was-,” Danneel was cut off by YN racing past her and Jensen groaning. Snaking her arm out and around the teen’s waist, Dee pulled YN back to her side to talk things through, “Whoa, whoa. Hey! What’s going on?”
Jensen answered for her, interrupting before YN could get a word out, “She decided to do her own thing today. Every time I told her to hurry or move along, she just moved slower. She barely spoke and when she did she was quiet and curt, at best, sometimes downright rude.”
“Babe-,” Danneel started, wanting him to give YN a chance to speak her side.
“We took her in to give her a better chance at life and she just- sometimes I cannot understand why she-“
“Right, because it’s all about you!  This whole day was all about YOU. Jensen. Ross. Ackles.” YN snapped. “Or should I say, the star of the CW’s Supernatural. Ooooooooh.” She sneered, mocking him for emphasis. “You’re right. I wasn’t myself today. But y’know what? You’re right. I’m nobody, right?! Why would you care enough to ask why? It was all about getting to the brewery tonight and helping the Padalecki Family with this or that. Well, I had a bad day too, and you don’t even know why!” YN tried to hold in a sob, but it was too powerful. She couldn’t speak, so she ran up the stairs to her room. Jensen looked at Danneel who nodded her head towards the stairs, nonverbally telling him to follow YN.
“What, sweetheart? Hey, wait up.” He calmly chased after her with an even voice.
“What do you care? I’m just a foster kid. It’s not like I’m your kid. You don’t have to care, obviously. Give me back to the caseworker.  I almost due to get moved again anyway.”  YN plopped on her bed.
Jensen slowly entered her room behind her. “Considering you didn’t slam the door in my face, I’ll take that as permission to ask what’s up with you.”
“What does it matter? I never get a choice in anything. You went all day without asking, Jensen. Why would you act like you care now all of a sudden?”
“You’re right, and I’m sorry.”  He stood at the end of her bed. YN took a deep breath.
“The caseworker called. My grandma died last night before you got home from Vancouver.”
He stopped with a slow nod as he absorbed the information she threw in his face.
“What? The one that we took you to visit with the other week?” He tried to approach her, but she tensed up and scooted back on the bed. Jensen stopped.
“Yep, that one. The one that knew me inside and out. Can you just please leave?” YN was done with Jensen caring.
“No. Let’s talk about this. I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“You kept ordering me around. I could barely get in a word before you were barking something else.” She played with her fingers.
“Can I do anything? Please?”
“You can leave. I won’t bother you any more than I already have. Thanks for taking me shopping today, but I want to be by myself right now.”
“I can understand that. I’m so sor-.”
“Please, just go away.” YN said  abruptly but without attitude, keeping her eyes on her lap.
“We’ll check on you in a little bit.” He slumped his shoulders and exited.
———
“Hey, YN.” Danneel knocked and opened her door.
“Jensen not ballsy enough to come back in here?” YN sassed..
“Knock it off,” Danneel sternly warned. “I’m sorry for your loss.  I know she meant a lot to you and we didn’t make it any easier.  What can we do to help you work through this?”
————-
Over the next few weeks, YN kept to herself.
“Hey, YN!” Jared stepped outside to greet her as she lay out on a  pool chair.
“No...,” YN groaned.
“Huh?”
“No. No pep talks. Please… I’m fine, everything is fine.”
“Okay, well I'm glad, but I wanted to tell you that the kids want you to come inside to play with them. Since you’re near the pool, I told them to stay inside so they don’t go near the water without floaties.”
“Oh,” YN sighed.
“What’s up, buttercup?”
“Jared. Come on… I don’t want to do this.” She whined.
“Stop. I know something is wrong. Talk to me.  I’m not Jensen or Danneel, I won’t go and tattle on you or gossip. Come on. Just talk to me.” He sat in the chair next to her and stretched out.
“Ugh. You’re incessant! You’ll follow me around all day today if I don’t talk to you. Won’t you?”
“Yep.”
“I’m just sad.  My grandma was amazing, and now she’s gone. I love Jay and Dee, but Gram knew me my whole life.”
“You’re really young to have to work through this, so don’t discredit that.” He turned and smiled. “It’s okay not to be okay. Remember that. There seems to be this idea that everyone needs to be cheery and grateful all the time. Those things are good, but it’s okay if you’re not. At least for a little while. Don’t sit in that for too long though.”
“I don’t have to be happy?” YN raised a brow.
“Nope. But you can’t lash out either. You can feel however you want, but you have to be aware that other people may not know or feel what you are feeling.  Make sense?”
“Yeah,” YN agreed
————-
She kept to herself not wanting to be with the family much. The Ackles’ didn’t know this, but she had been having nightmares most nights, hence why she was alone a lot: she was napping. One night Danneel heard a high-pitched scream and ran into YN’s room to find her gasping for breath.
“Babe, breathe. In and out.” Danneel had her sit up on her bed so that the foster mom could rub her back.
“I’m okay, Dee. Promise. Happens a lot.”
“You didn’t say anything about it. Does Jensen know?”
“No. He has been busy and upset with me, and you have the babies.  I’m fine.”
Dammit Jensen! She needs us.
“That doesn’t mean we don’t have time for you, sweetheart. I’m so sorry you felt that you had to keep this to yourself. How about I hang out in here for a bit? Hopefully you can fall back asleep soon.”
“Umm, I’m not really used to someone helping me like that,” YN looked away.
“Oh, it’s okay, I don’t have to.”  Danneel sadly rubbed YN’s arm.
“It’s okay. Might be nice. I’d like to try.”
“Really?  Okay, scoot over while I turn off the lights.” Danneel walked over to the light switch, flipped it, and walked back to her foster daughter. When she settled next to YN, she started scratching her back. “Feel good?”
“Yeah. Thanks, Dee.”
The older female kissed the top of her head. YN’s body tightened, but eventually her breathing evened out as she relaxed back into sleep.
—————-
“Why have you been so pissed at YN?  Every time you see her all you do is order her around or ignore her.” Danneel raised a brow at her husband via FaceTime.
“I- what?”
“Check your damn attitude at the door, Jensen.  She has been having nightmares, and she didn’t tell us because she felt bad for intruding on our lives.  I assured her that she is one of ours and she is just as important as the little ones. Come on, Jen. I need your help with this. We need to be a team here.”
“I- I didn’t realize that I did that. She’s just been off lately so I guess I was reacting. I’ll talk to her when I get home.”
“Good idea. She needs you.”
“Yeah, sure.” He rolled his eyes.
“Stop it. Don’t act so flippant. She does. She is a teenager—a child. And YN has been having NIGHTMARES worrying about what we think.”
“Really?”
“Yes! Now get your act in gear, mister.”
————-
“Hey, YN. Sleep well last night?” Jensen leaned against her doorway. She looked up from her textbooks at her desk.
“I’m fine. Welcome home, Jensen.” YN weakly smiled at him over her shoulder, but kept her back to him.
“Talk to me,” he walked into her room.
“About…?”
“Dee mentioned you’d been having nightmares?” He shrugged.
“No.”
“You know, you could talk to Sasquatch if you want to, or we could look into a therapist. You’ve been through a lot lately.”
“‘Cuz you’re too busy, I know.” She slumped back onto her bed.
“No, not at all.  He is just easier to talk to sometimes. You can always talk to me.”
“No, I can’t. You just shout or ignore me. I’m glad you’re home, but I have to study. Can you close my door on the way out?”
“YN-“ Jensen took a deep breath. “Look, I’m trying to fix this. Please let me help. I’m sorry for how I’ve been acting. I know you aren’t used to people apologizing, but this is how it works. I did something wrong, and I am trying to make it right. Granted, it’s still up to you if you forgive me, but let me show you how a real family works, okay? Or at least how this family works.”
“Oh,” she hadn’t thought about the interaction in that way. “Okay, just don’t yell so much.”
“No yelling anymore. If I do, you get to sock me in the arm, deal?”
YN started giggling. “What?”
“This is what families do. We’re silly and emotional and we care about each other. You understand?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Remember, it’s up to you to forgive me. I’m sorry that I was so dismissive of you. That wasn’t fair of me. So while you mull that over… Would you like to go outside and shoot some hoops with me?”
“Nah, it’s okay. I still have homework to do.”
“C’mon. I know you’re a basketball player. I saw you come in with a ball the other night. And it was past curfew too.” He raised a brow.
“I’m sorry! I just needed some time-“
“I’m just kidding, kiddo.  It’s fine. You were home, that counts. Come on, show me whatcha got.”
Jensen grabbed a basketball from the garage, and they went outside.
After they were done, they entered the house and fell into the couch.
“If you two are sweaty on my couch…” Danneel warned them.
“We’re not. Sorta.”  Jensen laughed.
They watched television until later in the evening.
Danneel walked by the living room on her way to bed when she saw Jensen and YN asleep on the couch. They were piled on top of each other, limbs all over the couch. She giggled and left them there for the night.
YN woke up leaning on Jensen. She froze.
Oh crap. I’m too close.
She tried to scoot away from him without waking him, unfamiliar and a little uncomfortable with much touching. He stirred.
“Hey, pretty girl. It’s okay. I don’t mind. Stay cuddled.” He offered a sleepy smile. Jensen opened up his body for her to return to her original spot. YN frowned but leaned back down, receiving a kiss on her cheek.
Yes! Good girl.
“Thanks, Jay.”
They fell back asleep until the little ones climbed on top of them.
“Our alarms went off,” Jensen laughed, motioning to the children on their laps.
“Yep.”
“Breakfast, sleepyheads!” Danneel walked into the living room. “Up!  You guys have been on the couch for 12 hours. Let’s get a move on.”
“Drill sergeant much?” Jensen laughed.
————
During the holiday season, the extended family members were invited to the Ackles’ residence. Nervous about so many new people, YN timidly hid behind Danneel and gripped the back of her shirt like a lifeline, peeking around her shoulder to meeting everyone.
“YN?”
YN dropped her grip on Danneel and turned to face the familiar voice. “Mimi? What-“
“You know each other?” Danneel watched as YN was embraced by the older couple.
“She was our neighbor in Dallas,” Alan answered with a smile, sauntering over to join the group. “We heard that Jensen and Danneel’s oldest kiddo was named YN, but we didn’t know it was you!” He beamed. “Miss you, sweetheart.”
“Missed you too, Pop.”
“Mimi...? Missed you…? Pop...?” Danneel hadn’t thought YN had a relationship with anyone before.
“What a happy surprise!” Eyes softening with love and happiness that YN had known at least one loving relationship in her life, Danneel gestured for her foster child to go into the kitchen. “YN, you can put your place at the table near them if you’d like.” She saw a hint of a smile cross the girl's face and couldn’t help but returning a beaming grin.
“Jensen!” Danneel whispered excitedly, waving for her husband to join her.
Jensen turned from his conversation, moving closer.
“Your parents know YN!” Danneel could barely control the excitement in her voice.
“Wait. What? How? They live in Dallas…?”
Neither parent noticed YN return from the kitchen, walking up behind them and surprising them when she answered, “They live near the house I lived in before. That guy was bad, so they moved me.” YN shrugged and started scratching her arm, “Then I came here,” the scratches on her arm turning red, a tight smile belaying her nonchalance.
“Hey, no need for that.” Donna pulled YN’s hand from her opposite arm. “It’s okay. He’s gone now.” Squeezing her hand and reaching over to rub the irritated arm, she whispered, “No scratching.” Resuming a normal volume, Donna asked, “did you go move your place at the table so I can sit next to you?”
“Of course!” YN nodded before squeezing Donna’s hand in return.
……….
YN opened up more in the company of the sweet older couple. Danneel was surprised but absolutely elated to watch the normally withdrawn girl as she talked and laughed with the whole family and hugged both of her in-laws throughout the evening.
“I need to talk to you.” Alan stepped away from the group with Jensen. After they got settled in Jensen’s office, Alan proceeded to tell him about how the two parties became friends. “We knew he was bad news, and YN was such a sweet kid. She was rebellious but good. None of the the others really said much, but she always waved or gave us a smile. We noticed she became withdrawn, so we would invite her over for dinner. She even made nicknames for us, but she-“
“Do you know what happened?” Jensen interjected.
“Shut up, and I’ll tell you,” Alan said, curt with his son. Jensen closed his mouth. “I do know that she did things like scratch her arms and cower if someone became too loud. When she would visit her arms were always red or bloody from the scratching.”
“Dammit.”
“I don’t know what he did to her, and I know she has been here for a while, but I can see it in her face. Just- just do what you’ve been doing. Please. She’s amazing and-“
“Dad, I know,” Jensen grinned. “We have been through a lot together already, but things have worked out fairly well. She is opening up some. Let me know if she tells you anything?”
“Sure, kid.  Let’s go eat some pie.”
————
“Hey, kiddo.” Jensen walked into YN’s room at midnight. She huffed. “Another bad dream?” YN tried to catch her breath.
“Yeah, sorry.”
“Hey, no need to apologize.  You can’t control it. Can I help calm you down?  Would you like me to stay?”
“You let me lean on you earlier.” YN started matter of factly. “I’m not used to…”
“Physical touch?” Jensen sat on the edge of the bed next to her and took her hand.
“Yeah. Can you stay? It makes me feel a little better.”
Her elementary description gave Jensen insight to the fact that she had not had exposure to that kind of love, or any kind of love.
“Of course. Come here.” He moved to lean against the headboard and opened his arm to invite her to snuggle into him, with YN under the covers and him on top. “Let’s hope these nightmares stay away tonight.  Go to sleep, sweetie.”
“Good night, Jensen.” YN gave him a sleepy half-snuggle half-hug before scooting to a more comfortable position. Falling asleep, she smiled to herself. Once she was breathing evenly Jensen untangled himself from her arms and left her sleeping peacefully, heading back to the living room to meet his parents and Danneel.
“She is out like a light.”
“Good, I hope she sleeps through the night,” Danneel sighed.
“That girl has been through so much.  Tomorrow is our last day here. Do you think we could take her for the day?” Donna looked over at them, puppy-eyes pleading the foster parents with a smile.
“I don’t see a problem with that, Mom. I’m sure she would love it.”
“I’m so glad she has you guys.” Danneel took Alan’s hand. “YN deserves some good.”
———
Good morning, YN!” Donna opened her arms for a hug.
“Hi,” she smiled.
“We have an idea. You can say no if you’re not interested.” Alan grinned.
“O- Okay?”
“Would you like to hang out with us today? I know it’s not the coolest to hang out with us old people, but we thought-“ Allen stumbled.
“Sure! YES! Really?” YN ran into Allen’s arms. “Can we?” She looked to her foster parents.
“We already agreed, as long as you’re okay with it,” Jensen offered a small smile.
“Thank you!” She ran into Jensen’s arms, appreciative of the opportunity. “When can we go? And where?!”
