Female lead singer Sandra Nasić joined the band later in the same year. The band's career took off in 1996 after they won the "Local Heroes" competition held by VIVA, beating out over 1000 competitors with their song "Open Your Eyes". The song was also their first and most successful single, followed by the release in October 1997 of their debut album Proud Like a God on BMG and GUN/Supersonic Records. The album peaked at number 4 in Germany and it was certified platinum. The songs "Lords of the Boards" and "Rain" were also issued as singles. they could have set her up as the perfect contrast to suzaku with regard to their identity as (partially in her case) japanese characters but she got only like two episodes dedicated to why she chooses to side with the black knights and zero rather than the brittanian empire (even though she could easily shuck her japanese roots and act like she’s britannian) and then it gets dropped for the rest of the show… it pisses me off like we already HAD contrast to suzaku who tells himself throughout the series that he doesn’t have a choice and only does what he must do… when they’re on the island and kallen admits to suzaku that she doesn’t Have to be part of the rebellion and that she’s not even sure if she’s morally correct for it, but she chooses to do this because she’s angry and wants revenge not only for her brother, but also for her mother (on top of believing in the cause more than believing in the britannian empire) like she’s so honest about her decisions regarding the rebellion. Ma egy kétfogásos degusztációs menüt terveztem feltálalni, egy habkönnyű elő- és egy laktató főétellel, ám egyikükről kiderült, hogy nem az, amiként emlékeztem rá.

Guano Apes: Proud Like a God (1997)

Életem első „metalos” Sziget Fesztiválján, 1999. augusztus 6-án az Apocalypticát és a Guano Apest láttam élőben, és annyi mindenképpen megmaradt ebből az élményből, hogy mekkora sláger volt akkoriban az Open Your Eyes és a deszkás-himnusszá vált Lords of the Boards, milyen jó volt ugrálni rájuk a tömeggel a színpad előtt. Később nem megvettem, hanem valamelyik szerkesztőségben valahogy hozzájutottam a német csapat első két lemezéhez műsoros kazettán, amiket mindössze egyszer vagy kétszer hallgattam meg, aztán bekerültek a fiók mélyére.

A ’90-es évek második fele zeneileg sokunk számára zavaros időszak volt: rengeteg új banda tűnt fel a színen, akik valami furcsa, mégis kemény zenét játszottak, a nehéz fémet alternatív, funk és hip-hop elemekkel ötvözték. A nu metal képviselőit ugyanúgy nehéz volt elkülöníteni a „hasonló, de mégsem az” bandáktól, mint hat-hét évvel korábban a grunge-ot az egyéb, rendhagyó zenét játszó rock/metal csapatoktól. A Guano Apes-re számos címkét ragasztottak (alternatív rock, nu metal, funk metal stb.), és e lemezüket hallva úgy sejtem, többféle közönségnek is megpróbálták eladni őket.

Ami megtévesztő lehet, hogy míg nagy slágereik a keményebb vonalat képviselik, a többi szerzemény lágyabb, kísérletezőbb, egyik-másik popnótának is simán elmenne, a rádióbarát simulékonyságtól azonban így is messze vannak. Ennyi idő távlatából úgy emlékeztem a lemezre, hogy több rajta a fémes megszólalás, de nem: a súlyos gitárok csak ritkán dörrennek meg rajta. Ami az anyag fő élményfaktorát jelenti, az a horvát származású, de már Németországban született énekesnő, Sandra Nasić produkciója: provokatív hangja hol bedurvul, hol ellágyul, összességében pedig erőteljes, karakteres orgánum. Egyértelműen ő a zenekar arca, a hangszereseknek sem a nevét, sem a fizimiskáját nem tudom felidézni.

A lemezen számos olyan nóta vagy momentum van, amely metalos mércével mérve nem üti meg a szintet, így megfordítottam a dolgot, és azokat a pillanatokat gyűjtöttem össze, amelyek viszont keményebben szólalnak meg. Azt gondolom, az Open Your Eyes és a Lords of the Boards ilyen tekintetben teljesen rendben van: Sandra hangja és a gitár is elég durva bennük, plusz jó húzásuk is van a daloknak. A refrénre az egyébként lágyan andalgó Maria is bekeményít, plusz a basszus is szinte mindvégig ott sétál mellettünk a járda szélén.

Megjegyzem, a mostani újrahallgatást megelőzően csak a két slágernótára emlékeztem, a többiről meg nem mondtam volna, hogy durvább vagy poposabb számok. Éppen ezért volt kellemes meglepetés a kótyagos gitárral, rappeléssel, scratcheléssel induló Crossing the Deadline, amelynek refrénje igazi dühbomba: Sandra énekére férfivokál kontráz rá, majd a frontember egy kis halandzsával is megbolondítja a főtéma végét:

Néhány hete ez a kedvenc dalom az albumról.

Talán az a megtévesztő, hogy a szerzeményekben a zenészek egyszerre öntik ránk a hideget és a meleget: a Mariához és a Crossing…-hoz hasonló a helyzet a We Use the Pain-ben is: az elején és a verzékben lazáznak, a refréneket viszont rendesen megpörgetik. A Wash It Down punkba oltott, idegbeteg alternatív muzsikája minden, csak nem mainstream muzsika; egy húzós, bár nem kemény groove-ot néhány pillanatnyi szving, majd hardcore-os durvulás követ. Őrület!

A Suzie basszus- és gitárjátékában jól felismerhető a Korn hatása, az albumot záró Tribute-ban pedig az Alice in Chains harmadik albumának borultabb pillanataira hajazó muzsikával nyúzzák az idegeinket.

Igazi vegyes felvágott a Proud Like a God, de mivel már minden dal (újra) jó ismerősöm, abszolút hallgathatónak tartom az anyagot.

King’s X: Tape Head (1998)

Bár alapvetően lágyabb húrokat pengetnek, a texasi bandának a keményebb zenék rajongói körében is nagy respektje van. Én többször is igyekeztem megbarátkozni velük, de sosem váltak igazán a kedvenceimmé. Sokáig kerülgettem őket, aztán az Ear Candy album egy barátom révén „csak úgy” betoppant az életembe, és mivel tetszett, már a folytatás elől sem zárkóztam el.

A Tape Head megszerzésének azonban különös története van. Az egykori MCD zeneáruházban vettem egy műsoros kazettát (talán Jerry Cantrell Boggy Depotja volt az), amiről a magnóba helyezés előtt kiderült, hogy elszakadt benne a szalag. Visszavittem a boltba, a pénzt nem adták vissza, helyette viszont választhattam egy másik hanghordozót. Néztem, kerestem, de nem igazán találtam olyat, ami a kedvemre való lett volna, így végül jobb híján esett a választásom a Tape Head-re.

Szerintem a sötét, nyomasztó borító volt az, ami alapvetően meghatározta az anyaggal kapcsolatos benyomásaimat, ugyanis annyira nem tetszett, amit hallottam, hogy talán nem is pörgettem le egynél többször. Persze akkoriban sem ez volt nálam a fő zenei irányvonal: a ’90-es évek végén olyan csapatok számítottak nagy kedvenceimnek, mint a Dream Theater, a Gamma Ray, a Paradise Lost, a Corrosion of Conformity, a Type O Negative és Marilyn Manson. Ám újra elővéve és jó párszor lejátszva a King’s X hetedik stúdióalbumát, azt mondhatom, hogy akkoriban simán „félrehallottam” őket.

A Tape Head semmivel nem tartalmaz rosszabb vagy depressziósabb muzsikát, mint elődje, a két évvel korábbi Ear Candy. (Mindenről azok a fránya borítók tehetnek! ) A megszólalást alapvetően meghatározza a frontember, Doug Pinnick jellegzetes orgánuma, akinek a hangját a nyitó nótában (Groove Machine) ráadásul megduplázták. A dalban a másik két hangszeres is leteszi a névjegyét: Ty Tabor gitáros jellegzetesen torzított gitárja és Jerry Gaskill egzotikus törzsek dobjait idéző szólója is nagyban hozzájárul az ütős előadáskezdéshez.

Már a feszesen induló Fade-ben is felhangzanak a King’s X védjegyének számító dallamos vokálok (Tabor és Gaskill), az Over and Over pedig egy csodálatos érzelmes nóta, szép szöveggel és tele finomsággal, gyengédséggel – úgy, hogy közben a refrénben ott van az erő, a lendület. És a slágerparádé így folytatódik, egészen az utolsó stúdiónótáig, amire a King’s X-hez nem szokott fülek akár azt is mondhatnák, hogy egyhangú produkció. A dalok tempója, tónusa nagyjából ugyanaz, bár az Ocean-t például Tabor énekli, és a végére is tartogatnak egy kis meglepetést, először a lemez leggyorsabb dala, a World, majd pedig egy New York-i koncertfelvétel képében. Utóbbi vendége a régi cimbora, Wally Farkas, a Galactic Cowboys gitárosa, aki itt nagymamahangon nyávog-nyekereg-visít egy improvizatív, erősen jazzes szerzeményre. Amennyire rendhagyó, ugyanannyira fárasztó darab is… Vegyük úgy, hogy opcionális hallgatnivaló, bár ez is szerves részét képezi a Tape Head setlistjének.

Kellemes csalódást okozott az album újrahallgatása, azonban általa egy időre újra elteltem a King’s X muzsikájával, nem érzem szükségét, hogy tovább mélyítsem még mindig bimbózó félben lévő kapcsolatunkat.
