More than 19,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen from the US and Thailand participated in the Cobra Gold 96 exercise which focused on improving interoperability among armed services and between countries. Today the annual Cobra Gold exercise is one of the largest and longest-running international military exercises and now includes participation from 28 nations. You know that iconic shark mouth aircraft nose art we all love? It was originated by the Flying Tigers, a volunteer group of US Navy, Marines, and Army Air Corps P-40 Warhawk pilots who joined the Chinese Air Force to help defend China against Japanese Forces advancing in the Pacific during WWII. This partnership began in April 1941, before the US declared war on Germany and Japan. Following months of training, they flew their first combat mission 12 days after Pearl Harbor was hit. The Flying Tigers demonstrated remarkable tactical victories at a time when the mood in the US was low, with little hope that Japan could be defeated. The success of the American/Chinese alliance led to a boost in morale for both countries and the combat records of the Flying Tigers still exist today. 50 years ago a partnership was made between Peanuts and NASA when the Apollo Program named the 1969 Apollo 10 mission Lunar Module and Command Module, Snoopy and Charlie Brown. If you ever get a chance to hear the mission audio you'll get a kick out of the Peanuts call signals during the mission chatter. The partnership continues today through NASA's Silver Snoopy award, given to employees and contractors who go above and beyond in their service to the agency.
