What Is Savia Divinorum?
Salvia divinorum, often referred to simply as "salvia," is a psychoactive plant native to the cloud forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. It has been used for centuries by indigenous Mazatec shamans in traditional healing ceremonies and rituals.
The active ingredient in salvia divinorum is salvinorin A, a potent hallucinogen that is believed to interact with the kappa opioid receptors in the brain. When consumed, salvia can induce intense and vivid hallucinations, altered perceptions of time and space, and a sense of detachment from reality.
Salvia divinorum is typically consumed by smoking dried leaves or by chewing fresh leaves. The effects of salvia are generally short-lived, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the method of consumption and the dosage.
Salvia divinorum is considered a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, which means it is illegal to possess or use it for recreational purposes. While some people use salvia for its psychoactive effects, it is important to note that the drug can be dangerous, particularly when used in high doses or in combination with other substances. Side effects can include nausea, dizziness, loss of coordination, and psychological distress.

Doctor, is “salva” supposed to be a play on “sativa”, or does something else like salva exist in our world?
So when I first heard Scylla say the words “Salva” in episode 1 as she handed Raelle actual drugs to go on a weightlessness inducing trip, my mind immediately went to Salvia. Salvia (Salvia divinorum) is considered the “sage of the diviners” because of its psychoactive properties. It’s known for being a potent hallucinogenic. In fact, these properties are so potent that even at moderate doses, you can lose bodily control and sense of your surroundings. Users can often have “out of body” experiences. So like, you should never ever take this drug without a buddy/someone to watch out for you. And um... I believe it’s technically legal in some parts of the US (but you didn’t hear this from me).
Tumblr media
Maintaining control while being completely out of control is an exhausting task; but look we can fly!
That was the extent of my knowledge before this ask. BUT because I was interested, apparently Salvia divinorum is native to the Oaxaca mountains which are located in... Southern Mexico where it was originally used by shamans during spirit journeys for healing purposes. So now I am wondering if perhaps this was the reason for the Second Mexican War (circa 1810-1813) in the MFS universe (even though Alder says it’s made from an ancient recipe with several ingredients). Honestly, this show continues to blow my mind. But also, it may be equally related to Sativa too, or a combination of both? My mind just went to Salvia.

E-Clip is no doubt one of my favourite artist and a big inspiration to me, his production always innovative. We’ll certainly see more of him later in this blog, but now I’ll post one of his first releases that became iconic.
Love this game of build-ups and drops here, that moment at 4:51 and another one 8 bars later especially.
