Throwing my two cents after reading the discussion between @saalvasam and @will80sbyers in which it’s rightfully mentioned that each season had a new Big Bad for our heroes have to measure up with. iirc we’ve seen the Thessalhydra pop up in at least a couple seasons, both in S1 and S4, with the opening dnd game of the series and with Will’s painting of the party charging into battles against a multi-headed dragon. I think that could very possibly be foreshadowing that it might be the one if not The Big Bad in S5, surpassing even Vecna (how scary would that be?). One of the key things about the Thessalhydra I find interesting is that you need to cut and destroy all of the heads to be able to kill it. Also worth mentioning of another kind of Thessalmonster which is the Thessaltrice which can petrify adventurers ACROSS planes of existence.  We’ve seen the Mind Flayer exert its influence by exploiting Will’s connection to the UD, so now that he’s back in Hawkins and clearly still having said connection there might see some more of that happen.

I see that as a perfect way to set up an interesting dynamic between different groups of characters ( Mike and Will going in the UD together anyone?) much like we’ve seen in S4 with the gangs splitting up with multiple coordinated attacks on Vecna to have a chance at defeating him. And even then, we saw how we still didn’t really get a true closer since he’s still alive since characters still weren’t working in sync. Too many secrets and lies are still to be unearthed and addressed. I think that’s one way to a satisfying and awesome ending- friends coming clean, and out (looking at you Byler). Airing everything out before banding together for one last battle against the UD and Thessalhydra, destroying (might be hard for a whole Plane of Existence) or sealing the gates for good. The duffels did mention they’d want to bring the og party back together, so who’s to say we won’t end up where we started, in a dire fight against the Thessalhydra?
