Nitpick for Day #29
The fact that the game that Ruby plays against the Red Prince in V9 isn't actually chess is such a sucky thing that this might not even be a nitpick because it's so disappointing.
Chess requires actual strategy and also sacrifice. Chess is a game that could hypothetically - played with the sentient fake pawns as well as Ruby's friends - be used to talk about Ruby and co's unrealistic world view of 'we have to save everyone/why not go for both' that can't always work and can't always be treated as the only morally good option. And it could also be used to make Ruby have some realizations about people like Oz and Ironwood and being in charge that she previously didn't seem to have, about the fact that being leaders in a war - like chess - is going to require sacrifice and you're going to have to make moves that might hurt people and that there are no easy and perfect solutions that fix everything in a snap of your fingers.
Instead what we got is a 'pretty much anyone can move pretty much anywhere' game where the only purpose was pretty much brute force and the little guys obviously weren't that much of a challenge for Team RWBY and nobody really cared about the stakes of them beating on unwilling sentient creatures.
What a shame.

Kind of a nitpick but kind of tied to a larger issue but still kind of a nitpick so nitpick November.
Tumblr media
If it is true that they where friendship bracelets….it’s a very very odd thing to cut out especially if everything including volume 9 was pLaNeD fRoM tHe BeGiNiNg they could have been used in volume 9 to remind Ruby of the love of her teammates and how she’d lose all that if she took a different weapon from the Blacksmith instead of a random line from Summer. Also having an item that justifies having flashbacks would be helpful no? Because flashbacks just reuse old clips.
Like the Legend of Korra has a flashback episode specifically to help save the budget and a show that regularly struggles with the budget you’d think they’d want something like this? Like yeah yeah the apathy but what about when she’s trying to use her silver eyes? Having it be something she regularly looks at and uses to remind herself of her friends and their love for each other? It seems like such a waste to scrap.

Nitpick november 4 (yes I am aware I skipped days 1 and 3. hush)
Blake's cat ears look weird and lowkey ugly to me. They are so flat and boring and also un-realistic, not in a nice stylized way. The unrealistic movements of the way the ears are animated doesn't help either, that's not how cat ears work.
Kali's ears look so much better. They look are more realistic and actually have volume and some "fluff" to them. (Plus they are just big and I like that.)
Tumblr media
Sorry I am an animal nerd and this probably only bothers me specifically but I can't handle the inaccuracy.

Nitpick November
Yang feels disconnected Day 8
This has been said by all, but it's too true. Yang really isn't tied to anything outside of her sister and now Blake. Her design is so disconnected from the others. She doesn't really have a goal by goal , I mean, RWB wants to save others, whereas Yang acts more like it is a chore being given to her. It always RWB pushing to help others, and when she does do it, it too makes Blake feel better. She's so disconnected. She feels like she is just taking up space in the show.
And the worst thing is I can't even come up with an au without getting stuck on her. I try to make the theme and the other fit perfectly only for Yang to never fit it at all. I do love Yang. I just wish they gave her... more? I just hate how Jaune feels more connected to the plot than Yang.

Sorry for the delay in getting this out, things have been things and I've been having trouble staying on top of stuff. But heck it, let's go, time for another Nitpick November, Number 8!
And here's what I've got for y'all today: despite establishing there is a relationship between Semblance and Aura, that connection feels half-baked at best and poorly explained, especially when various Semblances are brought into the picture.
So, as we all know, RWBY describes Aura as being one's Soul being channeled, either for offensive or defensive purposes. Semblances, meanwhile, are described as Aura being made to take on a more tangible form, explicitly so in the World of Remnant video on Semblances and Aura. So there is no arguing there isn't a connection, right?
Now, in general that isn't all that big an inconsistency: the series may go back and forth on things, but the general idea is that one can use their Aura like a battery of sorts to fuel their abilities, and as Semblances are a part of one's Aura, that's something their Aura fuels. All well and good so far.
But then we get to the idea of Semblances that work oddly and things start to fall apart, I feel.
For example, Qrow and Ironwood have passive/involuntary Semblances - Qrow can influence/spread misfortune around him, even if he doesn't want to, while Ironwood's Mettle "strengthens his resolve" (so dumb...) without any explanation about what triggers it. But like... how does that interact with their Aura? It should, given Semblances comes from Aura, but like... does that mean their Aura is on a constant drain from having a passive Semblance that can't be turned off, or does it just trigger whenever their Semblance does something? Or does it just not drain their Aura at all, despite Semblances literally coming from their Aura, which I wouldn't put past the writers?
What about Yang's Burn? She gets stronger and deals more damage the more damage she's been dealt, but we tend to see her activating her Semblance at critical Aura levels, right? Wouldn't it make her weaker overall to be using it at critical because she's got less Aura to power her combat with? Or is it just more powerful regardless of Aura levels? I know in-universe Yang's been taught to control and use it better, and that her prior usage was overall iffier, but it still doesn't exactly explain what sorta relationship her Semblance has with Aura levels.
It's just stuff like this that bugs me sometimes, where they want to do stuff like Ki or Chakra, but also wanted to get so expansive with options that it makes figuring the ins and outs of the two's relationship so very complicated. Especially since other series with power systems like Ki and Chakra didn't go so crazy with stuff like passive powers that would theoretically be a constant drain on their energy.

Nitpick November day 8 second nitpick
So we all remember Yang line about how she had to be the one picking up the pieces she said this back in volume 5 and that line has always bugged me Yang says her mother left summer left ( basically saying she died) tai was busy with school Ruby couldn't talk yet
The problem with this is that we don't know at what point in time summer died or how old Yang and Ruby were now assuming Yang had to start picking up the pieces right after summer died and tai buried himself in work and his depression and going off of Yang statement on how Ruby couldn't even talk babies don't start talking until around this time
Tumblr media
Yang and Ruby have a two year age gap Ruby is 17 Yang is 19 so there is a two year age gap between the both of them if Ruby couldn't even talk was mostly likely still a baby Yang would have been two but that isn't the case
Tumblr media
This is Ruby and Yang concept art that was created and used for volume two in the comics we see a panel of a Yang and Ruby together with summer and Tai
Tumblr media
And the rwby comics published by DC are stated by Kerry to be Canon or more accurately considered canon
Tumblr media
Remember Yang says that summer left tai was too busy and Ruby couldn't even talk but Ruby in both the comics and even in the art for volume 2 looks very much old enough to not only talk but even form full sentences so Yang line about how Ruby couldn't even talk around the time summer left and tai become neglectful is impossible
Now their ages around this time was never specified by the writers I've seen some speculation others have said Yang was five and Ruby was three others stated Yang was six and Ruby is four I personally believe the latter I highly doubt a six year old could take care of themselves let alone a four year old
We also aren't given a proper timeframe of how long Yang had to be the one to pick up the pieces who was cooking cleaning if we're going by Yang statements tai become a very neglectful parent dose CPS even exist in remnant because we're tai become neglectful people on patch would have to have figured something wasn't right and was Yang going to school there's no way she could have taken care of Ruby and have gone to school she would have to Miss many days of school leading to calls about Yang well being they would have to send someone to that house.

My first Nitpick November
Ok so I wanted to participate in this annual rwde thing this time so here I am!
My first nitpick from Rwby specifically has to do with Qrow's volume 7 outfit.
So first off let me start with this
Tumblr media
His necklace and his rings. In vol 7 when Qrow got his outfit change, he gets different rings and his necklace disappears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, why? Genuinely I got really upset by this. Some would think "Why is this a big deal to you?" and they would be right in thinking that. But again, this is a personal nitpick of mine, so I'm allowed to be upset by this insignificant change this month >:[
Tumblr media
Now the overall outfit, I hate the color pallet. Why brown? And why is he wearing two different vests? And the white undershirt? Wack! The layering of this outfit just does not look right to me. Also, compared to Qrow's vol 3-6 model and his vol 7-present model, did they make his neck shorter???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might be crazy, but I swear Qrow's neck got shorter. And it looks so uncanny to me.

okay so this latest episode of rwby beyond was beautiful and moving and all, but it never ceases to amaze me how good crwby is at putting their feet in their mouths when it comes to the implications they make about certain things
like what do you MEAN jaune and the gang went to the farmers market to buy farmers? to buy PEOPLE to do AGRICULTURAL LABOUR for them??? temporary arrangement or not, it's Deeply Weird to write your pale-skinned, blond-haired, blue-eyed character buying other sentient creatures. they literally could have written any other quirky afteran interaction. christ, these people need sensitivity readers

Cinder shouldn't use a bow. Her whole thing is glass/obsidian, which for those of you who've never had a window break, is famously inflexible. Everything to do with bows depends on flexibility — the arms have to bend to store energy, the string has to bend to draw back, even the arrow bends around the bowstaff when it's loosed and wobbles in flight.
Instead, Cinder should use throwing knives. It makes way more sense and fits her aesthetic better.

Nitpick for Day #13
I'm sure this has been talked about before, but the fact that there's like... No religion in RWBY is weird.
Qrow handwaves it away by saying 'not a lot of people are religious these days,' but like, it does not make sense. We have Team RWBY, Team JNPR, Oscar, Oz, Qrow, Sun, Penny, the rest of Oz's inner circle, the Ace Ops, Ilia, Blake's parents, Tai, Raven, Neptune... None of them talk about religion or are religious like at all?
The closest we get to religion is beliefs about aura, and even those seem generally across the board accepted, like nobody questions it much. It's so weird! Even if most people aren't religious, there are religions, and you'd think that somebody would follow some religion.
This is one of those things where world building just got totally bypassed, and it's a real shame.

Nitpick November day 8
Hear me out but…why aren’t their religions in Remnant surrounding the Grimm?
Let me jump back to where this question is coming from. In another game I adore Horizon Zero Dawn (shocker it’s not Undertale I know lolZ) that has a lot of similar beats to RW/BY surprisingly (seemingly endless force of creatures that want to destroy humanity that no one really understands where they come from and why, and basically immortal deity pulling the strings, cool unique weapons ect) and the main thing I want to focus on is religion.
In the world of Horizon, their are machines that at first where overall peaceful. They would charge at someone actively attacking them but mostly they would run away. Over time they became more and more hostile and more and more dangerous machines started appearing (referred to in game as the derangement). From this a specific religion thought that maybe by sacrificing people the machines would calm down and would appease the god. Their is another tribe that believes the machines themselves are gods while another believes that the machines where made by a devil and their goddess destroyed humanity (called the old ones) because they worshiped machines.
The point is Horizon has a lot of different beliefs regarding the machines which makes sense, not much is known about that so they have to figure it out themselves. And since people really don’t know much about Grimm….why aren’t their more religions or beliefs surround them and how they came to be and what they want? Imagine how interesting it would be to see people think about and behave regarding Grimm differently and how they deal with them. Like what if their are Grimm worshipers? Or people who outlaw negative emotions? The possibilities are endless but not at all utilized.

Second nitpick of the month, because I don't actually have that many of these.
I don't usually have a lot of time for subversions, but it is a nitpick that Volume 3 sets up this quite neat subversion whereby you're led to expect, via Weiss, that Atlas is this rigid, disciplined, militaristic academy and then the Atlas students turn out to be these dorks:
Tumblr media
Not to mention Penny.
And then by Volume 7 the show has just forgotten about that and the rest of Atlas really is every bit as disciplined and militaristic as Weiss thought and you wonder how Neon gets by there.

I missed Yang belt skirt Day 21
I like her belt skirt. I wish they kept it. It gave her a nice silhouette. They didn't have to make it one to one. They could have done what her second outfit did. Yang hasn’t been the same since they removed it.

So, for Nitpick November 10, I was considering talking about the waste of a good character that was Dr. Watts: a skilled planner and decently capable fighter with a penchant for biting sarcasm and decently assessing situations, who after finally making a salient-enough point to Cinder to get her to accept working with him, ended his tenure on the show... being betrayed and killed by Cinder in a move that has no benefit for her, wasting the whole point she had learned there. There's a lot to say about how wasteful it all was, having him die the second volume after he became an actual threat.
...and upon reflection, that was just not really a nitpick, but a critique of the show. Complaining about how Scarlet and Sage were underutilized by the show like i did, that's a nitpick because no matter how much I would have wanted them to be relevant, I can't see their presence changing the story *that* much. Wishing to have seen more of the Vytal Festival characters as RWBYJNROQ (or whatever their acronym is) travels from place to place is a nitpick, because they're ultimately tournament characters who didn't even react much with our main cast, so they don't need to reappear and they wouldn't really affect the story by showing up. Being critical of how Watts was used, that's not a nitpick, because he was a much more major character and thus is a larger criticism of how RW//BY handled his usage.
...but I still really want to talk about Watts, so I wracked my brain a bit to think of a good nitpick.
And so, here's what I've got: why did Watts never try to unlock his Semblance?
As I said in my prior nitpick, there are numerous characters who the show had just never bothered to reveal the Semblance of. And with a character like Roman, they introduced the idea of fighters who never unlocked their Semblance for one reason or another, which is a bit of a shame from a storytelling standpoint but I'm not too critical of that sort of turnout because it worked well enough for Roman.
And I'd say it overall worked okay enough for Watts as a character, too; he was a devious schemer and skilled enough without his Semblance (I'd argue his fight with Ironwood is one of the best in the show), so it's not like it was a big loss.
But as I was looking into my piece for my prior Nitpick, I had debated putting him on my list because it felt weird for him to be the only one of Salem's group who didn't have a Semblance (if you don't count Mercury, but he was still the only one in Salem's group for a time). So I wanted to see what the deal was with why he didn't have a Semblance, and as I saw in a Q&A, Watts didn't bother to try to unlock it because he felt his time was better spent focusing on improving his other skills than try to develop a Semblance.
And I'll be frank, I don't like that answer. Watts was indeed an incredibly skilled thinker and planner who worked with machines, yes, but why should that preclude him from trying to develop his Semblance too? You'd think a guy who cares so much about getting results and using everything and anything he can as a resource would actually want to figure out what his Semblance is, to give him yet another resource to work with.
But alas, yet another character who's ended up in the "the creators didn't want to bother giving him a power, and we'll never know what could have been" pile.
