sacrificing self-identity to earn recognition

Today we are going to come back to Drill music. More particularly its appropriation on the Irish rap scene to create the Irish Drill. It has been discovered very recently, notably following the featuring of J.B2 an Irish driller with RussMillions a UK driller. However, one cannot help but notice some surprising differences and similarities. Indeed the Irish drill does not have the same results as the UK drill. Although some facts can be assimilated to both cultures: the neglect and impoverishment of certain communities and the boredom of the young demographics of these same communities; the Irish drill is not as badly seen as in the UK where it is directly associated as a cause of the increase in street violence.

But what surprised me the most was the adaptation of the accent and language of the Irish drill. These rappers take on a multicultural English accent and take over the English "slangs" to which they tint very lightly with Irish intonations. What is surprising is that some artists change a unique characteristic of who they are: their Irish accent, to better fit the style of music they are assigned. Nevertheless, when listening to an Irish drill, the striking accent that is Irish is barely noticeable. It is then understandable that the very light or almost non-existent use of their native accent is not a stylistic effect. It is a way of making their drill more credible. It would also be old-fashioned and false to say that all Irish people are white with red hair since migration is an integral part of our lives today. But it is true that it is this traditional notion of "Irishness" that persists. As Sequence, an Irish driller says "I don't think that people take a black Irish rapper rapping in an Irish accent seriously yet."

I understand the fact that they have chosen the mainstream accent in order to bring their music to a much wider audience, however I find it a shame to have to put aside a part of myself in order to ensure a wider audience and therefore more marketing and sales.
