what humidity do you keep your Russian rat snake at? every care guide I've looked at so far just says a big water dish is good enough, but I still want to know what the ideal % range would be. (maybe I've gotten myself paranoid by keeping tropical species almost exclusively) thank you!
I keep my guy between 50-60% with constant access to a humidity hide and we've never had any issues! They seem to really thrive with mid-range humidity. They definitely don't need tropical humidity, though, be careful not to overcorrect and let it get in the 80% range.

Azura has taken to tail rattling at *every* feeding, whether I am still in the tub or not. But I guess that is an improvement, since she used to not even look at her food until I was out of the room? She went from shy to sassy 😂
I took a quick video of it because I think it's so interesting. Bitty baby thinks she's a big scary rattlesnake.

My new baby russian rat snake (Elaphe schrenckii) doing an explore of his tub! This little guy is so precious. I’m still deciding on a name but I‘m thinking I might go with Onyx. He’ll be primarily black as an adult with a yellow or cream belly, but right now he’s mostly different shades of brown. He’s really active which I love. He’s not afraid to be out in the open, much different from my previous eastern rat snake and corn snake. He especially seems to enjoy the UV light, which I added after @rainbowsnakes mentioned their russian rat Levi really likes to bask in his. Thank you to everyone who helped me to decide on a snake species and to make the perfect enclosure for his needs. I really appreciate it!

I’ve wondered about keeping Russian Ratsnakes for a while, since I’ve heard their personalities are gorgeous. I didn’t know you kept one, though! What have your experiences been? And what sort of enclosure should they have?
Oh, my experience with them has uniformly been deeply positive. They're up there with Japanese ratsnakes as the ratsnakes with the best personalities, they're active snakes and can be a bit squirmy but very easy to handle otherwise. Even as a baby, my Jojo was always very calm. They're easy-going, good-natured snakes as a rule.
Russian rats aren't too picky with enclosure specifics, you'll want to make sure you give them a lot of room. They usually stay around 5 feet long (Jojo is 4.5 but some can reach as long as 6 feet, so be prepared for that possibility), and they love to climb so I'd recommend a 6x4x4 enclosure at the absolute minimum. They don't do well with high temperatures, so I'd set their hotspot to no higher than 85 F. I find my guy is happiest when it's a bit lower, around 82.
I recommend Russian ratsnakes with literally no hesitation; they're good for everyone from beginners to experts. They will need a big enclosure, so that's something to think carefully about and plan for if you're looking into a Russian rat, but otherwise they're pretty easy and every single one I've ever met has been an absolute delight.

AllMusic Staff Pick: Gesloten Cirkel Submit X
The first album by the mysterious Russian producer (who now seems to go by the name Ratsnake) is an undisputed new-school electro classic, filled with stark, paranoid tracks which will do damage in any DJ set. The title track is one of the most addictive club tracks of the entire decade, but the rest of the album, including the lo-fi darkwave track "Stakan" and the chiptune-esque "Chatters", is just as powerful.

I was feeding some of the snakes last night and I guess Azura was feeling spicy. I finished feeding her and was in her neighbor's tub when she started tail rattling at me. The video is not very loud but you can hear it a bit.

I am looking at purchasing my first snake and have been researching for the better part of the year. I have been debating between a cal king, rat snake, or a gopher snake. Was wondering if you have any advice on enclosures or which may be a better first reptile.
Hi there!
These are all excellent choices and they have very similar enclosure needs. As long as you’re getting a captive-bred friend and not a wild-caught specimen I think any of these would be very suitable for a first reptile pet!
I would caution you that there are many different types of rat snake and not all are great beginner species, especially if we’re not counting corn snakes in this group. While the North American species are very easy to keep (as long as you have a large enough enclosure!) they do tend to be defensive and flighty, even if regularly handled. A really good choice here (again, besides the obvious corn snake) might be a Russian rat snake, which are somewhat smaller than Texas or black ratsnakes and still very pretty. Other great choices are captive bred Great Plains ratsnakes, Baird’s ratsnakes, or the gorgeous and slightly more husbandry-specific Trans-Pecos ratsnake.
I would also caution you that all of these choices are STINKY when they have a reason to be. King, rat, and gopher snakes all employ a funky musk as their first means of defense and they can occasionally musk even when they’re not feeling particularly threatened. Like when you’ve already been holding them for a while and they suddenly decide that you need some incredibly toxic-smelling perfume all over your fresh clean jeans…If you’re down with the stinkness, though, and you’re prepared to have a six-foot long enclosure (minimum!) for your snake when they’re an adult, I think the best choice is the one you like the most.
I wish you happy choosing!

Kallari my precious little daughter! She’s a melanistic russian rat snake/elaphe schrenckii I got from Zerkle Reptiles. Fun fact! Apparently Kallari and her sister are the first visual melanistics born in the US! Kallari was the only one for sale and Zerkle kept her sister so I got super lucky!
