Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn 1606-1669 “Scholar at his Writing Table” 1641 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr The sitter wears a black hat, a grey-brown cloak with a hint of green, lined with dark brown fur, and a gold chain. The subject of old scholars and philosophers is popular in Rembrandt's oeuvre. The face of the man in picture is distinctive because of specific details such as the wart on the left cheek and the red nose, suggesting a concrete sitter. The picture is painted on poplar panel. The Royal Castle paintings are therefore two of five examples where Rembrandt or his workshop might have used poplar panels. Rembrandt probably bought a small batch of such panels c. 1639–41 and experimented with them. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.) Château d’Amboise
Château d’Amboise is located in the Indre-et-Loire department of Loire Valley, France. The castle was built in the 11thcentury by the Count of Anjou upon a promontory from Neolithic times above the Loire River. In 1434, the castle was seized by King Charles VII as the owner, Louis d’Amboise, Viscount Tours, was convicted in a plot against King Louis XI. Amboise was to be executed, but the king took his estate instead. Once the castle was in royal hands, it became a favorite of the French Kings. In the 15th and 16th centuries, under the orders of several kings, the castle was refurbished, the Renaissance façade was created, and Italian art was added. King Francis I’s love for Italian art led him to invite Leonardo Da Vinci to reside at the estate. Da Vinci spent three years at the castle as its architect, painter, and engineer. He died in 1519 at the castle and was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert. King Francis I had an underground tunnel built between Amboise castle and Château Clos Luce. By the end of the 16th century, Castle Amboise was still a stronghold due to its location, but the French sovereigns only used it during their travels. In 1620, King Louis XIII had new defenses constructed, but the castle fell into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance. Amboise Castle was used as a prison in the 17th century. Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed during the French Revolution. During WWII, the chateau was occupied by German troops and refugees, and it was also used as an arms depot and post aerial communications. The castle was bombed by the Allied forces, which damaged the loggia’s façade, and destroyed the chapel’s stained-glass windows and roof. A restoration campaign began in 1952. In the 1970s, further restoration work was carried out. The castle was listed as a historical monument in 1849. The castle is five times smaller than it once was. The interior has vaulted ceilings, royal apartments, the Drummers room, where dances were held, a council chamber with brick walls, and King Henri II’s chamber with his four-poster bed. The exterior has towers, ramparts, ten-foot walls, balconies, terraced gardens, the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, and the Royal Lodge, which was home to the castle guards. Château d’Amboise is open to the public. #Castles #Chateaux #CastleAmboise #ChateauRoyalAmboise #IndreEtLoire #France #LoireValley #LeonardoDaVinci #LoireRiver #RoyalCastle #venue #PrivateEvents

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn 15 July 1606– 4 October 1669 “Girl in a Picture Frame” 1641 Oil on panel (Truly one of my favorite paintings in Poland. It was breathtaking. Look how her hands reach onto the frame.) Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr The Girl in a Picture Frame is a 1641 oil on panel painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt. It is also known as The Jewish Bride and The Girl in a Hat. With The Scholar at the Lectern and Landscape with the Good Samaritan, it is one of three Rembrandt paintings in Polish collections. Its authorship has sometimes been questioned, but was confirmed in 2006. The sitter is framed by a feigned picture frame of which only the bottom and right side are visible. She wears a dark red, velvet dress, a black hat and pear-shaped pearl earrings. This type of costume is not associated with the fashion of the time. When it appeared in portraits, it was treated as ancient attire that suited well the mythical, historical, oriental or biblical subjects. Rembrandt often portrayed figures dressed in this manner both in his oil paintings and etchings. It is not a portrait, but a tronie, or a study of a head or half-figure without any significant attributes or action. Rembrandt originally began to paint a different picture — of a woman seated, turned slightly to the left, wearing a dress corresponding to the fashion of the time, with a millstone ruff, and wearing a small bonnet. The figure was further to the right than the girl in the final version. The portrait of the woman in a bonnet was never completed and the panel was reused. Rembrandt was never known to have reused the support of a started painting for executing a portrait commissioned by a client. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.)
