HCs About Being Apart Of The Minutemen
➼ Word Count » 0.4k ➼ Warnings » None
All the settlements will have a bonfire of sorts when you and the other Minutemen come to visit. It's a small celebration that the settlers have to show their appreciation and allow you to relax. It's always a lot of fun to be able to sit back and get drunk with the locals.
Mama Murphy ends up being the community grandma. It doesn't matter who the general is, her word is the law.
The Minutemen veterans are really kind and will try to help the newer members out as much as possible. If you have a question or need something don't be afraid to ask one of them.
Sturges is like the unofficial cousin for you all. He shows up at the castle randomly, builds you something cool, then leaves again till the next big event or holiday.
The settlement kids are always making little figurines or comics about you.
There's a small messaging group of sorts who travel around to the different settlements to make sure everyone's alright and nothing major has happened in any of them.
Dogmeat is kinda like the mascot of the faction since he's always leading soldiers when they're lost or randomly showing up to help fight off raiders. There's been a debate about whether or not they should add a dog to the flag.
Preston has a bulletin board with quests and objectives that need to be completed.
Strong is another unofficial member of the group since he loves helping the settlers out. Some people protest about it, but it doesn't stop him from showing up.
Imposter Preston likes to lurk around outside the Castle. Most people just accept him as the weird neighbor by now. (whatever gets the word out)
Sarge's shutdown body is used as a statue and symbol of the Minutemen's past and Sturges will occasionally come over and try to fix him up again.
There’s a garden right outside the Castle that’s meant to feed the soldiers and any settlers who might be struggling.
Ronnie keeps everyone in line and ensures everyone's doing what they're supposed to and not slacking off.
Quincy is the capital of the Minutemen and the Castle is their military base.
The Minutemen made their own Olympics-type event between the settlements and it rakes in tons of listeners to Radio Freedom every year.

Fallout Art Request: Ronnie Shaw, the badass boxing grandma second only to Mama Murphy (actually if you could draw those two interacting that would be extra cool but otherwise just Ronnie pls)
Being the only experienced badass at the castle has got to be exhausting! Whippin’ all those youngins into a proper militia (eventually)
Tumblr media
[ID: a digital drawing. Ronnie Shaw from fallout 4 is pictured with a lit cigarette in her raised left hand. Ronnie shown from the elbows up and her right side is outside the image slightly. She is frowning and looking down and to the left. Ronnie is wearing her usual military fatigues and military cap. The image is heavily shaded and has an overall dark tone. The background is dark blue-grey shades coloured in sketchily. The artist’s signature is in the bottom left corner “Typos & Tea ‘24 :)”. End ID]
Oh yeah the badass grandmas are both gotta be stron- oh what the hell? Poor Ronnie’s basically already dead and walking? Mama needs to keep out of the buffout it seems lol
Tumblr media
[ID: 2 screenshots of the fallout wiki, each showing the special stats for Mama Murphy on the left and Ronnie Shaw on the right, Mama’s stats are “Special: 19 ST, 4 PE, 4 EN, 4 CH, 4 IN, 4 AG, 4 LK. Actual: 19 ST, 4 PE, 4 EN, 4 CH, 4 IN, 4 AG, 5 LK”. Ronnie’s stats are “Special: 1 ST, 0 PE, 1 EN, 0 CH, 0 IN, 0 AG, 0 LK. Actual: 1 ST, 1 PE, 1 EN, 0 CH, 0 IN, 2 AG, 0 LK.” the screenshots are linked by a simple sketch of hands shaking. Above the hands is the text “having in game S.P.E.C.I.A.L. That makes no sense”. End ID]

okay so i was thinking about post-game fo4, especially nukaworld because i know for a fact after completing the gauntlet and getting the fuck out of dodge Sawyer wouldn't want to touch all that with a twenty foot pole.
My cowriter and I said he'd probably pawn it off to his more chaotic husband, Baron but honestly knowing Baron I think Sawyer would hold back on that because nuka world is Special so I was trying to think of who he would maybe put in as the overboss in place of him and
hear me out but i really want to read a fanfic about Ronnie Shaw taking over Nukaworld and having to work with Gage. i just think it would be funny

First of all, this household loves Ronnie Shaw, and I'll smack anyone who is mean about her.
Secondly, something I thought about earlier after Super Spouse told me he was at the Castle and he was tickled pink Ronnie finally showed up:
If you have Hancock with you when you meet Ronnie, he makes little quips towards her age. Nothing too awful, just him being a smartass as per usual. (Which means, I would give him a smack on the back of the head for being rude.)
But, I think that really shows that he's a "young" Ghoul. I don't mean his real age, I mean the fact he's not been a Ghoul for long. Ghouls from before the war do not make age jokes unless it's about themselves. To them, EVERYONE is a young whipper snapper. I figure if you make an age remark about someone to a Ghoul, you're more likely to get a response along the lines of "Old? Come back to me when you've watched your friends and their children and their grandchildren all grow old and die." Hell, some Ghouls are pretty much the grandparent that never goes away to some families in the wastes. And, I think that's kind of a cool idea. They are a constant that each generation can count on and finds it rather comforting.
So, yeah, Hancock hasn't been a Ghoul long, and he knows what he's in for, but I think sometimes either he forgets or he really, really doesn't want to think about it because he's a straight up depressive as it is.
However, I figure every once in a while Daisy teases him about being a "kid" just to mess with him.
.
.
------------------- According to canon he's in his early 40s, but, not that it really matters, I personally headcanon that he was that age when he became a ghoul so he's probably closer to 50, although he literally doesn't know. Hell, I'm not sure he kept up with his real age before he was a Ghoul. I figure not a whole lot of people celebrate birthdays more than "Woot! Raiders didn't get me this year!"

I had never tried melee combat in Fallout 4 until I fought Ronnie Shaw. And I’m not gonna lie, she was kicking my ass. But too be fair I had hardly any perks in combat and my computer moved like ass. I had to use vats to combat the lag and land hits. And it was working! So as I’m whittling down her health I remembered I have the mysterious stranger perk. And I’m thinking “Oh man, I hope The Mysterious Stranger doesn’t show up and turn everyone aggressive.” And as soon as I finish the thought, in comes The Mysterious Stranger to bust a cap in Ronnie’s ass.
Good news! The Mysterious Stranger seemed to be using blanks. Or Ronnie is sturdier than she looks. And the fact she tells me that I know how to throw a punch is hilarious. Like imagine picking a fight with someone and they hit you so hard that it feels like you’ve been shot. Because for all she knows that’s how it played out. I had to pause the game to laugh.

I read a fun post about what the FNV and FO4 companions would make of their counterparts in the other game. It made me think about the notion of counterparts! In that post, it’s kind of class-based (RPG class, I mean, not socioeconomic). It also necessarily leaves out loads of FO4 companions because that game has so many more. So I thought of an alternate way to pair them up :) It’s fun to draw parallels!
Raul and Nick - two old men who remember pre-war times. Both are knowledgeable and bitter, and funny with it. Both are haunted by memories of women they couldn’t save, in Nick’s case compounded by it not really being his own past and in Raul’s case that it was. They are fundamentally helpful souls but find it hard to be accepted by communities because they’re not seen as human. They’re also both literally falling apart!
Veronica and Maccready - both putting up fronts to deal with heartbreak, though Veronica’s is cheerful and Maccready’s is uncaring. Maccready spends the whole game until you finish his quest in the same space Veronica is between her decision to join the Followers and her vow to never speak to another human being again ever, but obviously it ends better for him and he can continue living for his son (and if you don’t directly encourage Veronica to leave the BoS then she never will attempt it, of course). How they joined the Brotherhood and the Gunners are obviously completely different - as are the organisations and their levels of violence. I think they would have acted the same as each other in each other’s shoes. Probably due to their isolated, isolationist childhoods they are very reluctant to go their own ways.
Arcade and Piper - probably the most ‘good’ companions in their games (Cass is broadly oriented the same way as Arcade, but her bloodlust and sadism put her in 2nd place; Veronica has similar attitudes but a weaker spine - Piper is more or less neck-and-neck with Nick, but she’s more focussed on injustice in the broader sense) but also maybe the most evil. Arcade’s preferred ending for himself sees him donning daddy’s Enclave armour to keep order in unruly Freeside, but nothing like House and the Brotherhood dominating through superior technology and nothing like the NCR who want to do ostensibly the same thing as him, just with more men, and probably like, courts. Piper is very motivated by the truth and very afraid of neighbours betraying one another, which she manifests by attempting to whip up the mob on anyone she vaguely suspects of being an Institute spy. Enclave and synths aside, these are real traps real people fall into. And really fascinating.
Boone and Cait - very troubled and very violent. They have difficulty understanding what they are and aren’t responsible for - what they can and can’t change. I wish Cait’s quest actually involved helping her with her demons (especially if, like Boone’s, it also had an option to encourage her to succumb to them). Sorry, the more I think about Cait’s quest, the more annoyed I get. Why has she got Vault-Tec Rad-Consumption 3000(tm) like what even is that. Feels like I’m in an opera or something. I guess what I’m trying to say is that my headcanon Boone is an alcoholic and my headcanon Cait has like, feelings. And if you squint so you can see them like I do, you’d see how they’re the same.
Cass and Danse - I think Danse still being all ad victoriam!!! after his personal quest is mostly oversight, but I interpret it as still being broadly loyal to their cause, which is more or less what he says to you the last time he acknowledges that he’s being kicked out. Cass shares these mixed loyalties to the NCR. Both of them have been hurt by their factions (Danse more directly, Cass because of the unchecked turn to oligarchy) but they still want the best for them. It’s not really clear how Danse feels about a BoS victory - Cass regrets an NCR victory because she wants a halt to their expansionism. The big difference between Danse and Cass is that he’s a soldier, and he’s been a very loyal and patriotic one. How much of that might be pride? It’s mostly pride that sees Cass not wanting to sell her caravan, by the time you meet her. Both of them are really badly affected by the loss of the people under them. Danse is doing a little better because he still has 2 survivors. I wonder if losing them too would have fucked him up so much he responded differently to the events of his quest? Similarly it’s fun to imagine what Cass was like as the boss of two caravans, before the plots against her.
Lily and Nick - I nearly didn’t include this - I know we’ve already had Nick, but we can never have too much, right? :) And I didn’t want to leave out Lily. Similarly to Raul and Nick, there’s a shared frightening appearance. But in this case the parallel is about how holding on to their pasts affects them. I guess everyone is affected by this at all times :) But in their cases there’s this very sharp divide between their human selves and their new, created selves. Nick’s choice to embrace being Nick Valentine or not mirrors Lily’s choice to increase her meds or not. In both cases, I think holding on to their memories at least lightly may be difficult, but it will keep them human. If Nick didn’t know what it was like to lose someone, I’m not sure he’d have become a detective at all, and probably not such a dedicated and warm one. And for Lily, memories of her family are her only memories of being neither a super violent soldier nor an institutionalised patient. (The player could of course give them new attachments, too, or instead!)

Do Fo4 + NV Companions Play Caravan
Yes, I know Caravan isn't in fallout 4 but I have headcannons as to who plays it. Cause it's got to have travelled with the Caravans.
Fallout New Vegas
Cass - She 100% plays caravan. She was a caravaneer for years. She knows how to play and she's good at it. She also bets high on games of Caravan, both her own and other people's. Likes to place bets on who will win.
Boone - He knows how to play, he just doesn't care about playing He'd rather be on the lookout rather than playing the card game.
Arcade - Again he knows how to play, he's even looked into some strategies for playing. Some of the followers enjoy a good game after dinner. Occasionally he plays, but not very often, it's more of a social event than he's overly comfortable with.
Veronica - She didn't start playing till she started scavenging for the Brotherhood out of Trading Post 188. She gets fiercely competitive about it at times. Could go head-to-head with Cass and have a standing chance.
Raul - He's had years of experience. Probably helped refine some of the rules used across the Mojave. He traveled a lot and has seen many different renditions of Caravan so sometimes gets rules confused. He's always down for a friendly game to while away the nights on the road.
Lily - I can't see her playing caravan. She'd rather tell stories than play a game of caravan on an evening. I have no real justification, but I don't think the folks in Jacobstown really play caravan.
Fallout 4
Piper - She knows how to play, she and her sister play it on an evening when Pipers not writing
Valentine - He doesn't know how to play but would be willing to learn. He knows people that do play, including Ellie who learnt from a travelling merchant
Hancock - He knows how to play, he's very good at it. Preferse the fast-paced games but will play Fahrenheit on occasion
Danse - Doesn't know, doesn't want to know. He's never had anyone be willing to teach him. Though I imagine the Brotherhood has a game of a similar nature.
Deacon - He's one of the best players in the Commonwealth. He claims to be the one who brought Caravan to the east but no one can confirm this info. When downtime arises, he and Desdemona will play a game. She thinks he cheats
X6-88 - Doesn't play. He's never been taught, but if he is taught. He's good at it. Strategy is his thing. He's good at it. He doesn't gloat about it but will challenge Deacon to a game.
Preston - He picked it up from a trader and he and the minutemen play it on an evening. The castle has a room with tables and chairs that are only used for card games. He's challenged Ronnie Shaw on more than one occasion and had his ass whipped
Curie - She's curious about the game and will watch people play it. She can't get her head around the rules
Cait - Doesn't care enough to play. Would rather train than play such a slow-paced game.
Codsworth - has a hard time playing due to being a Mister Handy but he understands it. He referees games in Sanctuary
Strong - Doesn't care. It doesn't help him find the Milk of Human Kindness
MacCready - He's played a few games. He doesn't bet very high, not one to take unnecessary risks. He's good at it. Learnt to play in Goodneighbor. Plays against Daisy on slow nights.
Longfellow - A passing stranger to Far Harbour taught him how to play, ain't many people in town who want to play. He doesn't get a chance to play very often. But when he does he's good.
Gage - Two of the Traders in NukaWorld were playing and he forced them to teach him. He knows how to play but he's a sore looser. No one in Nuka World wants to play against him.
