Premature Ejaculation
Experimental and performance art band formed in 1981 by Rozz Williams and Ron Athey. They played only few live shows, mostly because clubs refused to book them due to their controversial stage theatrics, including Athey eating a crucified roadkill cat.

KELVIN Not exactly. It exists in a continuum that wasn't proven until ten years ago, a higher mathematical dimension superimposed on top of the Universe. An infinite number of them, in fact. It was a violation of all of our various laws regarding the Universe, Space, or Space-Time. It was completely counter-intuitive. We had to unlearn everything.
RHEYA Is it intelligent?
KELVIN Intelligent beyond our comprehension.

"Let us speak no more of these crippled souls, who are in a most miserable and dangerous state, unless our Lord bid them rise, as He did the palsied man who had waited more than thirty years at the pool of Bethsaida."

I found these really great pictures of one of Ron Athey's performances of Incorruptible Flesh: Messianic Remains (I don't think I can post most of them as they're prob considered "mature" by Tumblr even though they're art - check out the source but beware if you're squeamish).
Athey is one of the reasons I fell in love with performance-based art. There's a book called Hold It Against Me: Difficulty and Emotion in Contemporary Art by Jennifer Doyle (highly recommend) which describes the above performance from the POV of a viewer/participant, if anyone is interested.
If you know anything about queer art history, and more specifically the culture wars of the 80s and 90s in the US, you might recognise Athey as one of the artists whose work was vilified and censored (a performance titled Four Scenes in a Harsh Life was falsely accused of exposing the audience to "AIDs-tainted" blood.)

Image from Pleading in the Blood: The Art and Performances of Ron Athey
“The task of sacred pain is to transform destructive or disintegrative suffering into a positive religious-psychological mechanism for reintegration within a more deeply valued level of reality than individual existence.“
“”For the mystic seeking to chain the human mind in order to acquire a higher, more perfect form of understanding, pain provided the necessary psychic shackle.  This is why we see the mystics conscientiously intensifying pain on the surface of their bodies through vigorous scourging and within their bodies through concentration on the Crucifixion, until finally the contents of the world were canceled out in their minds.”  Pain unmakes their profane world with its corporeal  attachments and leads the mystics away from the body to self-transcendence.”

Was I just some stupid fag who died of AIDS, or was I this troubled boy who never became a minister, and who lashed out and rebelled, and then in between took drugs and had promiscuous sex and contracted a disease and died? It's this frenzy to make it bigger, to make it more, to make it mean something... I see myself as being akin to a teenager slashing at myself. It has finesse but it's a temper tantrum.
