Summary: She roots a hand through her hair, then drops her weight into her couch. Frannie gets up from her spot in the corner to rest her slobbery head in Amanda’s lap. “This is—this is a defeated clean.”
“Defeated clean?” Sonny asks. Amanda can see that his body is held in a kind of a tense interim, like he wants to move towards her but cannot seem to decide if he should.“
Like, what do you do when you find out your kid is aware that her life is very different from her classmates, and that there’s nothing you can do about it?” Amanda says, aware that she is a little bit on the verge of hysterical. “Because, really, the nothing you can do about it bit is really messing me up, and I realized on the drive over that Leila has never been to our house, and that I could probably do something to remedy that, and that maybe, anyway, it might help with Billie’s allergies if I get rid of some of the dust.”

Summary: Amanda almost drops her face into her hands, almost lets out an almighty groan of defeat, almost stamps her feet on the ground in frustration, like she is on a second floor apartment and a Mr Heckles is downstairs.
