365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #347: Week-End at the Waldorf (1945) - dir. Robert Z. Leonard

MGM reheated their success with Vicki Baum’s Grand Hotel story, updating the epic tale of guests living and loving in a posh lodging establishment so that World War II could be included. Packed to the gills with some of MGM’s biggest stars and veteran character actors, the cast of Week-End at the Waldorf certainly is impressive: Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon, Van Johnson, Edward Arnold, Keenan Wynn, Robert Benchley, Phyllis Thaxter, Leon Ames, Porter Hall, George Zucco, Miles Mander, Frank Puglia, Cora Sue Collins, Warner Anderson, Rosemary DeCamp, Jacqueline deWit, Nana Bryant and, to top it all off, Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra, featuring Lina Romay.

The plot moves in pretty much the same direction as Grand Hotel, observing the interconnecting strands of narratives that involve the various temporary inhabitants of the famed Waldorf Astoria in Midtown Manhattan. A glamorous movie star (Rogers) is wooed by a handsome war correspondent (Pidgeon); the same star is caught up in a love triangle involving her childhood friend (Anderson) and his fiancée (Thaxter), who is convinced that the old pals are having an affair; a gold-digging stenographer (Turner) sets her sights on a much older business tycoon (Arnold) but finds herself falling for an Army pilot (Johnson) suffering from a serious combat injury that requires immediate surgery. Then, of course, there are all the supporting characters who dart through the scenes too, no doubt helping to stretch the film’s running time to its bloated, 130-minute length. I would say that Week-End at the Waldorf needed a major trim, but that never could have happened if MGM insisted on weaving together so many storylines. The film is entertaining (I enjoyed some of its meta humor, referencing the earlier Grand Hotel feature) and I’ll try anything with Van Johnson once, but it’s not a production that necessitates a repeat viewing.
