Riz's Hell
Suppose that in the world of Beastars, there exists a piece of poetry that curses anyone who reads it out loud. Perhaps in the mad ravings of a certain brown bear student, this idea was born and written, then spread and popularized by Cherryton Academy's rumor mill.  * Based on the real-life Japanese poem "Tomino's Hell"
アルパカわ甘い、羊わ棘吐く、(Arupaka wa amai, hitsuji wa toge haku,) The alpaca is sweet, the sheep spits thorns,
かわいい「リズちゃん」わ丸薬食べる。(Kawaī `Rizu-chan' wa gan'yaku taberu.) Adorable Riz takes his pills.
ひとり地獄に落ちゆく「リズちゃん」、(Hitori jigoku ni ochi yuku `Rizu-chan') Riz falls into Hell alone,
地獄くらやみ味も無き。(Jigoku kurayami aji mo naki.) Hell is in darkness and there is no taste.
出血わ「リズちゃん」の唯一友人か、(Shukketsu wa `Rizu-chan' no yuiitsu yūjin ka,) Is Riz's only friend the one who is bleeding?
彼の怪物の言葉はうるさい。(Kare no kaibutsu no kotoba wa urusai.) His words about monsters are loud.
走ると出血と悲鳴を上げる、(Hashiru to shukketsu to himeiwoageru,) Running and bleeding and screaming,
無限孤独わ一つ道。(Mugen kodoku wa hitotsu michi.) Infinite loneliness is the only path forward.
暗い地獄へ受け入れをたのむ、(Kurai jigoku e ukeire o tanomu,) Would you accept him into this dark hell,
柔らかい羊毛に、蜂蜜に。(Yawarakai yōmō ni, hachimitsu ni.) To the soft wool, to the honey.
暖かさ、味、肌理いくら覚えてか、(Atataka-sa, aji, kime ikura oboe teka,) How much warmth, taste and texture do you remember?
無限孤独の旅支度。(Mugen kodoku no tabi shitaku.) For the preparation for the journey into infinite loneliness.
新年が来て候林に谷に、(Shin'nen ga kite sōrō-rin ni tani ni,) The new year is coming into the forests and streams,
暗い地獄谷八夜空。(Kurai Jigokudani hachi yozora.) In the eight night skies of this Hell's dark valley.
籠にやアルパカ、車にや羊、(Kago ni ya arupaka,-sha ni ya hitsuji,) The alpaca in the cage, the sheep in the cart,
かわいい「リズちゃん」の眼にや涙。(Kawaī `Rizu-chan' no me ni ya namida.) In the eyes of adorable Riz are tears.
啼けよ、アルパカ、林の雨に (Nake yo, arupaka,-rin no ame ni) Cry out, alpaca, to the raining forest,
女ヤギ恋しと 声かぎり。(On'na-yagi koishi to koe kagiri.) Voice out your yearning for the female goat.
啼けば反響が地獄にひびき、(Nakeba hankyō ga jigoku ni hibiki,) The echoing cry reverberates through Hell,
弱点の丸薬強化する。(Jakuten no gan'yaku kyōka suru.) The pills of weakness are strengthened.
地獄八夜空八日の出めぐる、(Jigoku hachi yozora hachi hinode meguru,) Moving around Hell's eight night skies and eight sunrises,
かわいい「リズちゃん」のひとり旅。(Kawaī `Rizu-chan' no hitori tabi.) Adorable Riz travels alone.
地獄ござらばもて 来てたもれ、(Jigokugozaraba mote ki teta-more,) Hell awaits to bid welcome,
地下道の影の下に隠されて。(Chikadō no kage no shita ni kakusa rete.) Hidden below the shadow of the underpass.
血まみれ牙だてにはささぬ、(Chimamire kibada teniha sasanu,) Pierce the flesh with bloodied fangs,
かわいい「リズちゃん」の目印に。(Kawaī `rizu-chan' no mejirushi ni.) As a milestone marker for adorable Riz.
To all animals of Cherryton Academy and the rest of the Beastars world: Dare to read it out loud?
Wow anon this is really cool thanks!!!! -Lexi

Top Successful Seiyuu in 2019!
Below, I’ll do a quick sum up of why I think these seiyuu are climbing the ranks! Keep in mind, I don’t listen to a ton of their music. I’m just surmising based on seasonal anime and other contributing factors (not all of them happened in 2019). Seriously, this is from the top of my head. I only searched up the spellings.
Top 20 Female Seiyuu
Miyu Tomita’s role as Rizu Ogata in Bokuben really put her on the map for me, and the same goes for Miku Itou’s role as Miku in Gotoubun!
Mikako Komatsu placed high for this and the Newtype anime awards! Her career has remained consistent, and her music performances are strong!
Ai Fairouz just debuted this year with her role Dumbbell nan Kilo Motteru?
Reina Ueda voiced Kanao in Demon Slayer and had major roles in SSSS.Gridman, Wataten, and other various anime!
Sumire Morohoshi took the lead role as Emma in Yakusoku no Neverland, reprised her role as Kyouka in Bungou Stray Dogs, and debuted as a solo artist singing an anime opening for Honzuki no Gekokujou
Konomi Kohara cemented herself as a seiyuu with her leading roles in Tsuki ga Kirei, Asobi Asobase, and Kaguya-sama, made everyone laugh with the Kaguya radio show, and premiered her own radio show!
Maaya Sakamoto’s music career is forever strong. Her seiyuu career is forever strong. She’s still taking supporting roles. She’s amazing. Nothing needs to be said.
Sora Amamiya’s various roles in anime like Konosuba, Seven Deadly Sins, Dumbbell nan Kilo, and so many other things along with her blossoming music career both solo and with Trysail have boosted her even further!
Rie Takahashi’s roles in Konosuba, Takagi-san, and Fate: Grand Order along with her debut in Earphone have secured her a spot! I feel like it was just yesterday that she was in an anime about becoming a seiyuu.
Ayachi was in Gotoubun, continued her work in music, and got married to Kaji!
Ai Kayano has gotten various roles throughout the year including Gakkou no Juliet, Konosuba, and most importantly SAO! Oh yeah, and that isekai about being a reincarnated mom.
Nana Mizuki’s music career is going strong. She might be almost 40 but she’s still kicking harder than most of the 20-year-olds I know.
Saori Hayami is coming back for another season of Oregairu, plays Shinobu in Kimetsu no Yaiba, had a recurring role in Danmachi, and kept her roles consistent. Her music career has taken off even more!
Ayaneru has been getting a ton of roles while maintaining her old ones! Yotsuba in Gotoubun, Ochako in Hero Aca, and Iroha in Oregairu, and her radio shows have been successful too! According to people in the seiyuu fandom and her fellow seiyuu, she has good legs and assets. Their words not mine.
Aoi Yuuki’s role in dubbing the Spiderverse movie as Gwen as well as reprising many of her roles and getting new ones in various seasonal anime like Fire Force and Asobi Asobase.
Inori Minase has recurring roles in Danmachi and Seishun Buta Yarou have really boosted her popularity!
Miyuki Sawashiro hasn’t even been in many seasonal anime recently. People just recognize her excellence and give her one of the top spots anyway.
Kana Hanazawa hasn’t been landing as many roles as usual, but she has gotten roles in Kimetsu no Yaiba and Gotoubun!
Maaya Uchida has been boosting her music career and has a main character role in Yakusoku no Neverland!
Akari Kitou has had main roles in Kimetsu no Yaiba (which has boosted her career a lot), Wataten, and other popular anime
Top 20 Male Seiyuu
Sakurai takes so many roles every season. He’s usually in 2-3 anime in supporting roles. Mob Psycho 100 really solidified everything though. His performance as Reigen was undeniable. Furuba, Bungou, and Kimetsu no Yaiba also gave him major strong roles even if they were main character roles!
Tsuda has been in an unusual amount of anime. Way of the Househusband (even just the CVs alone), Hero Aca, Fire Force, Africa no Salaryman, Nakanohito Genome, have all given Tsuda important roles. It’s never been a better time to be an anime villain!
Shugo Nakamura just debuted as a solo artist. I honestly don’t know him. I think he was on SideM for Idolmaster.
Sugita got new supporting roles here and there. He’s popular in general. Gintama ending probably helps too. He was in Robihachi and some mobile game adaptation this year.
Ayumu Murase has Devilman: Crybaby, Haikyuu, and most recently, Sarazanmai (and to a lesser extent Dr. Stone).
Saitou recently had the second season of Piano no Mori... yeah, maybe his support for past anime like Haikyuu helped? I don’t know. Good for him though.
Nobuhiko recently had his own Accelerator Railgun anime where he went absolutely ham, Hero Aca is popular, and Meiji Tokyo Renka also got an adaptation. He has a future strong role in Kimetsu no Yaiba too!
Kaito Ishikawa has been trying so hard to be in everything. Seishun Buta Yarou, Hero Aca, Dumbbell nan Kilo, Tate no Yuusha, and One Punch Man just to add main roles.
Jun Fukuyama had the revival of Code Geass along with some supporting roles here and there like in Kimetsu no Yaiba. Persona 5 and Mayonaka no Occult gave him main character roles too.
I have no idea what happened to no. 11
Nakamura is in everything. He sticks himself in everything whether you like it or not. Dr. Stone, Hero Aca (future role as Hawks), Furuba, Babylon, just to name a few.
Daiki Yamashita plays Deku which will always secure him a spot, and his role in Oresuki was so well-done.
Kento Itou was in Wotakoi and was a part of Hypmic! I don’t know why else he’s here.
Makoto Furukawa had Kaguya-sama, One Punch Man, Dr. Stone, Furuba, and Kono Oto Tomare.
Yuuma Uchida has his older sister, his main roles in Banana Fish, Kono Oto Tomare, and Furuba! His music career has also been taking off. He recently got a seiyuu award too! gotta make his onee-chan proud!
Kamiya maintains his popularity through his DGS radio and anime like Saiki (which just ended), Attack on Titan (which is just about to end), and I’m not sure how it’s going right now but probably One Piece too.
Matsuoka is in a lot of things. He’s trying his best to get roles, not get a massive social anxiety attack, and not to rely on Nobunaga. He’s got SAO, Danmachi, Gotoubun, and Kimetsu no Yaiba just to name main roles.
Mamo has been everywhere. Fire Force, Sarazanmai, and more importantly Bungou Stray Dogs. BSD is quite popular.
Shimono has Kimetsu no Yaiba! Trust me, his commitment to that series is commendable
Natsuki Hanae has his gaming channel, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Tokyo Ghoul, and other stuff!
Kaji married Ayachi

How to start a School Rom-Com
School romantic comedies are probably amongst the most divisive of all standard anime genres. Notoriously, they are regarded by the community as the ‘trashy“ or “generic” type of anime commonly being produced in the industry.
Tumblr media
Personally, I find this sentiment to be completely unfair. I think that there is an understated amount of nuance that comes into creating a likable or enjoyable romantic comedy.
Let us take a look at a recent manga that I feel was successful in starting a proper rom-com.
We Can’t Study is the new romantic comedy running in Shonen Jump that replaced Niskeoi. Interestingly enough, the author of We Can’t Study was one of the assistants on Komi Naoshi’s Nisekoi and also the author of the Niskeoi spin-off Magical Patisserie Kosaki-chan.
The premise is as follows:
Yuiga Nariyuki works hard every day to obtain a full-college scholarship from his High School to support his poor family. His headmaster promises that he’ll get it if he fulfills a small condition. He has to tutor two resident female geniuses, Furuhashi Fumino (Literature-genius) and her friend Ogata Rizu (Science-genius), so that they can get into their dream-college. The catch is that Fumino wants to major in Science and Rizu wants to major in Literature despite them failing constantly in those subjects.
The synopsis is quite simple. However, what I find interesting is how this show executes this premise.
This manga begins the story by focusing on our MC and establishing his motives. Although this is rather common, it is vitally important that the MC is given something. He is doing something with his life. His ambition is clearly stated within the first ten pages and it is established that he is diligently working towards his goal.
That’s fine and all. But why? Well, it is because he comes from a poor household. His father passed away several year prior to the beginning of the story which no doubt impacted the household both emotionally as well as financially. Therefore, Yuiga takes it into his own hands to find a career and to help his family.
Tumblr media
He is established to have given up everything to pursue his goals. In addition, he also is shown explicitly to forgo sleep in order to get his stuff done (As we will later see in his duties as a note taker and tutor to the girls).
Although both of these elements are relatively simple, both are important in characterizing the MC and making him likable. How many of these rom-coms begin with an unassuming MC who is just skating by under his irrremarkability. Here, we a man who knows what he wants out of the world and is working towards his goal. That goal is specifically the school recommendation for a full ride university grant.
However, the recommendation comes at a cost: Yuiga is to tutor two of his fellow classmates. Now, Yuiga is forced into a wacky relationship with two zany girls!
Except he is not really forced into anything.
In many similar shows, a chance encounter, a shared secret, or the recommendation of the school counselor forces the MC into the unknown world of harem MCs. However, in this series, Yuiga is given the option of whether or not he will accept the job. Now, Yuiga has already been established as an exceptionally high achieving student. Given his skill set, Yuiga could easily attend almost every university he wishes. It would just take him a bit more time or money.
But that’s the problem, it would be a detour to his ambition. He is square set on his goal so, despite how it is initially portrayed, he accepts almost immediately because it is his dream.
Once again, We Can’t Study constantly reinforces the idea that this is a character we can root for. Having a dream is universally relatable and is critical to the likability of a character.
In addition, it is this sense of choice and free will that is imperative. Characters being just dragged around or events being started by incidence alone is unsatisfying and somewhat weird given that we, as the audience, are meant to derive enjoyment from the suffering of the characters. Of course, it is not as if coincidence and incidental events are not absent from We Can’t Study. However, as of now, it does not seem like any major plot points are derived out of these coincidences yet and the series is mostly comedy as of the first ~15 chapters so it is not a huge deal.
Giving the characters a sense of choice in their situation is further elaborated on in the series itself. Fumino and Rizu both willingly choose to have Yuiga as their tutor because they have dreams of their own. Did I not mention that the girls in this story are also working towards their dreams as well? Both Fumino and Rizu are natural geniuses in their respective fields yet seek careers and colleges in fields they are completely garbage at.
Both of these characters were introduced as complete natural geniuses whose talent is so great in their specific study that they don’t even have to think about doing them. Yet both find themselves tragically attracted to fields of study that interestingly represent what they lack as people.
Rizu wants to study Psychology because her social ineptitude leaves her without many companions as well as very little skill in reading emotions and interacting in social situations. Meanwhile, Fumino wants to study Astronomy because her deceased mother also loved the stars. However, Fumino is hopelessly bad at science and astronomy.
This is an example of extraordinary yet incredibly simple characterization of these characters. Both of the lead heroines are humanized and thus made infinitely more relatable as people. Therefore, we can more easily become invested in the wacky misadventures of these characters.
Tumblr media
Moreover, Yuiga is particularly sensitive to the goals of these characters. In many other cases, the MC is motivated exclusively by kindness that stems from some traumatic childhood memory of his past (if anything at all). However, Yuiga connects with these characters on several levels.
For one, Yuiga understands the two from his own experiences and upbringing. He himself was a sub par student once in his life but his father always encouraged him to do better and praised Yuiga whenever he did improve (even if the improvement was going from a 3 to a 4). Therefore, Yuiga is the prime person to be invested in the story of their goals.
In addition, Yuiga is also motivated by self interest. Although this decidedly not as important as the series goes on as Yuiga deepens his relationship with the two, it is no doubt a factor in justifying his assistance,
Finally, of course he is kind. But obviously this isn’t a huge deal. Of course he is nice because we’re going to want to root for this guy. Being kind has never been not a good thing to be.
Another topic of discussion is that there is a certain sense of actual chemistry and human connection between the characters. All three of them are initially just teacher and student but they very quickly develop a friendship together. All three, despite having their own individual goals, are joined together in their shared pursuit of their dreams together.
Tumblr media
There is also a noticeable sense of improvement and progression innately present in the premise. Once again, there is sense of moving towards something, a goal.  It also helps that they are somewhat portrayed as underdogs who nobody thinks are capable of succeeding.
To begin wrapping up, the last point of discussion I’d like to bring up is that the girls are legitimately cute as much as they are likable. One thing that I took notice of is that these girls fill certain character cliches yet stop short of being actual cliches. Their eccentricities are not extreme in any way which makes them a better rounded whilst still maintaining their charm, quirkiness, and distinctiveness  The fact that they have ambitions automatically gives them a bit more leverage as being an actual character.
It also interesting to note that these girls show their -dere side of their personality a lot more than what you would normally expect. This, of course, means their all the more cuter.
The art and character designs are starkly reminiscent of Nisekoi (which should be obvious considering the author). This is undoubtedly a good thing as the girls in this series are extraordinarily cute and bubbly and animated in their expressions and mannerisms. It gets my thumbs up.
I am excited to see what this series can become and I look forward to future chapters featuring these characters.
