i just finished my first watch-through of dimension 20 fantasy high, and man—all i want to talk about is riz gukgak and his bloody hands.
riz and his bloody hands. his white-knuckle grip on control. little freakazoid insomniac wound too tight. “i’m a harsh guy,” he says, but he’s got so much of a heart in him that he leaps into hell to save his father and charges blindly off into the nightmare king’s forest to save the world. he’s a harsh guy, but his greatest fear in the world is being left behind by his friends.
i love watching brennan and murph. because brennan is truly an extraordinary dm, and murph is THE plot-hound player. his characters move forward, ever forward, only ever onward. riz cannot sit still, he cannot lay fallow. the three days they’re aboard a ship in the open ocean, he wigs out and spends it spiraling below deck. he cannot relax. not even for a second, not even to sleep. because if he does--what? what will happen to him? what will happen to the teenage goblin kid with no father?
riz and his bloody hands.
and brennan knows murph well enough that he knows how to turn that into a character beat. he pits riz’s drive for knowledge against him. you love the truth. you seek it so much that you cut your hands upon the insides of crystals. what a metal and underrated line. because riz would destroy himself for the truth. he can’t handle anything less. he’s like one of those dogs that chews its own paws to shreds if it doesn’t have a job to do. it’s always the next mission and the next job and the next adventure. no time for slowing down because the world is perpetually ending and there’s only so much one little goblin can do on his own--even if he never sleeps. there’s no time for slowing down because if he has a moment - even a moment! - to breathe, to rest, what would he do with it? what does riz have, if it isn’t the mission? what does he offer the world, if it isn’t his brain and his bullets and his bloody hands?
at the end of the day, riz gukgak is just an empty little kid in a room full of empty mirrors. he’s just the kid who sleeps clutching his sword. that’s why kalina preys on him the way that she does. she’s the queen of masks and reflections. she sees right through to the fear inside of riz--that he isn’t good enough, that he is nothing more than some kid playing detective who gets his friends hurt. she toys with him, but i imagine she also sees some of herself inside of him. they are both in their own ways, empty shells.
and of course, the ironic truth is that riz is far from empty. truth-seeker, paranoid, whip-smart and frantic, riz tries so hard. he tries so hard that he dies for it. he’s the reason for their little team you know, he’s the instigator. he went after penny, and he went after the nightmare king, and he will keep going and going and going, tearing his hands open again and again and again until he gives out. the ironic truth is that riz has one hell of a heart on him, and it beats him bloody. it drives him forward, ever and onward. it will not let him rest, and so he will never feel how big it is. how much space it takes up inside him. how un-empty he truly is.
all he has are his hands, and they do not stop bleeding.

Not afraid. Not a monster
Inspired by this picture by @bitemarx
Riz sighed as he sat down. He was just so... tired. He hadn’t felt this tired since he was a small child and his entire head ached with it.
Beside him, Baron sat, swinging their legs. Their knee hinges creeked with each movement. When Riz looked over, Baron was looking at him, their cracked face perfectly still, their mouth forever frozen in a small smile.
“Why are you still here?” Riz asked wearily.
“You created me, your Romance Partner, because you were afraid,” Baron said, as if he were describing the weather. “Are you still afraid, Riz Gukgak?”
Baron cocked his head a little as he asked the question, then froze, waiting for a response.
Riz turned away. “No,” he said. But he knew that wasn’t true. If it were true, Baron wouldn’t be here.
He didn’t even understand what he was afraid of. So he wasn’t in a relationship. At that point in time, only one of his friends were even in a relationship. And he wasn’t even sure if Fig counted because Ayda wasn’t exactly “at that point in time”. Nobody was getting their kisses in, and nobody else seemed to be so scared of hiding that fact.
Riz knew he wasn’t afraid of that. Because he’d told his friends that Baron wasn’t real. He told them that at the start of their Spring Break. Baron had been real to them for all of five seconds. His friends all knew he wasn’t in a relationship, and he wasn’t afraid of that, or even ashamed of that.
Who wanted to be in a relationship anyway? He didn’t have time for that. Who wanted the heart break? He’d seen how Kristen spiralled after the break up with Tracker, somehow becoming even more unstable. He’d seen how upset Gorgug was, even though he tried to hide it. Even Fig, still in a relationship, was upset that she couldn’t see Ayda.
Riz looked over at Baron again. Their head was now twisted upside down, and Riz realised he hadn’t stopped cocking his head after all. He didn’t jump, just looked at his Romance Partner and looked away again. It wasn’t scary, it was just Baron being Baron.
Baron wasn’t scary. Not really. So he could climb up walls and twist his head about. It wasn’t any more creepy than a giant spider, and Oisin and his friends had been stomping on them for years. Yeah, the doll face was a little unnerving but with everything Riz had been through for the past two years, it was nothing special. Baby probably creeped him out more.
“It is not my appearance that you are afraid of, Riz Gukgak,” Baron said, reading his thoughts.
“No, I’m not afraid of you,” Riz said, quietly.
“You are afraid of me, but not of my appearance,” Baron said. “Why do you think that is?”
He needed to go to bed. He had aviation club in four hours and he needed to sleep before then, or his mom was going to be so frustrated. Riz knew she was almost as overworked as he was, and he didn’t want to give her another thing to worry about.
Riz began to change into something more comfortable so he could sleep, but his thoughts continued to wander.
He didn’t have time for a relationship right now, but he would have one eventually. He didn’t know if it would be with a guy or a girl or something else. He was open to anything, he just hadn’t seen anybody he liked yet. But he’d find a partner, and they’d have a couple of kids, once he’d gotten a job and everything, of course. Whoever he married, it would be someone badass. Like he’d told his mom, they were a family of goblin badasses. And then he’d have a cool kid to pass on his spy knowledge to. Not right now, but someday. In the future.
“It is very rude to plan your future with someone else when your Romance Partner is sitting right here,” Baron said, swinging their legs again.
“I didn’t even say who my partner would be,” Riz said with a small smile. “You don’t think you’re a badass?”
“You do not like me,” Baron said. “Your Romance Partner deserves better treatment than to hear you say that.”
Riz didn’t respond. He climbed into bed and lay down, closing his eyes but sleep wouldn’t come.
“You are afraid, Riz Gukgak, that you will never find anybody you like,” Baron said from the end of the bed.
“Go to sleep, Baron.”
“What was that spell your principal cast on you at the Frostyfaire Folk Festival?” Baron asked.
“What?” Riz asked, sitting up.
“He cast dominate monster,” Baron said. “Do you not wonder why that spell was able to work on you, Riz Gukgak?”
Riz shrugged. “Because he’s a racist?”
“Perhaps,” Baron said. He brought his legs up so that he was kneeling on the bed, staring at Riz with those frozen, unblinking eyes. “Or perhaps because he knows. It is not that you are a goblin that makes you a monster. What is more monstrous than somebody who cannot feel love?”
Riz stared at Baron. Baron stared back. He hadn’t thought of that. He purposefully hadn’t thought of that.
He felt love. He loved his friends. He loved his parents. He loved Penny. He loved...
“That is not what I am talking about,” Baron said. “You know that. They will all find Romance Partners, and spend the rest of their lives with them. How often does your mother spend time with her high school friends? Who do these people go home to at night? Their Romance Partners. But you will not have one, because you are a monster, Riz Gukgak. And then who will you go home to?”
“I just haven’t found the right person yet,” Riz argued.
“You have not found any person yet.”
“I’m not a monster,” Riz said quietly. “And I’m not going to be alone.”
“Of course you will not be alone,” Baron said, shifting forward so he could crawl up the bed. “You will always have me.”
The alarm on Riz’ crystal woke him up. Baron was gone. He stared up at the ceiling for a few moments, gathering his thoughts. He wasn’t afraid and he wasn’t a monster. He just didn’t have time for this.

Presenting my complete list of Fake Statement Ideas (with some revisions since last time), part 1:
“Play Nice”: statement of Sid Phillips, regarding his childhood toys. (Toy Story, Stranger) Title references Woody's threat to Sid, and Woody is of course empowered by the Stranger in the form of creepy early CGI animation.
“Revelation”: statement of Warlock Dowling, regarding his atypical upbringing. (Good Omens, Spiral?) Title references the Book of Revelation; I'm not sure what Fear this one is since Warlock realizing even part of what was going on with Aziraphale and Crowley would be creepy as hell, but his caretakers aren't actually malicious. Feel free to comment in the notes.
“Seventeen”: statement of Veronica Sawyer, regarding the 1989 suicide epidemic of Westerberg High. (Heathers: The Musical, Desolation). Title comes from the song "Seventeen," and JD is sooo Desolation in his edgelordiness-turned-homicidal rampage.
“Special Effects”: statement of Alissa Denton, regarding the last performance of Misty Moore. (Dimension 20: The Unsleeping City, Stranger).
“Mantle of Whispers”: Statement of Agent Cuspin Clark, regarding a conspiracy of disappearances and doppelgängers. (Dimension 20: Fantasy High, Stranger). Title comes from one of Fig's former subclass abilities, which let her capture the shadows of the recently deceased and adopt their persona to impersonate them; Cuspin Clark is a character from FH: Junior Year investigating the disappearance of "Hilda Hilda" (one of Fig's aliases).
“Romance Partner”: Statement of Riz Gukgak, regarding the abnormality in his reflection. (Dimension 20: Fantasy High, Lonely) Title comes from Baron's self-proclaimed status as Riz's romance partner, and Baron is my beloved awful Lonely Avatar supreme.
“Skulk”: Statement of Steven, no surname given, regarding the creature he encountered during a caving expedition. (Minecraft, Dark) Skulk is the stuff that summons the Warden, who brings a magical aura of blindess with it as it hunts you through the Deep Dark to murder the shit out of you. Why the fuck did Warden lose so hard in the Dark bracket.
“The White Whale”: Statement of anonymous source, regarding how he murdered his stepfather. (The Mariner’s Revenge Song, Hunt/Buried)
“Danse Macabre”: Statement of Gog-Agog, regarding why you should be Gog-Agog too! (Kill Six Billion Demons, Corruption (and, for spoiler-y reasons, Vast)) Title comes from one of the recent strips, which reveals certain things about Gog-Agog's backstory, and also just generally fits her fucked up performance thing.
“Sugar and Spice”: Statement of Ruby, no surname given, regarding the stuffed toy she received from her grandmother. (Desolation, Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse) Title is a reference to Random Encounters' musical about the game.
“Treasure Hunt”: Statement of Stanley Yelnats, regarding his imprisonment in a correctionary boot camp. (Holes, Buried)
“Sickly Sweet”: Statement of Hans Ranstott regarding his sister’s protection of him. (Transformed: The Perils of the Frog Prince, Corruption) Fellas, is it Corruption to (attempt to) murder several people with poison in your misguided efforts to protect your brother, who then was about to finish the job by offing two children to prevent you from facing justice for your crimes?
“Shadow Puppet”: Statement of Lena Sabrewing, regarding her troubled relationship with her aunt. (Ducktales 2017, Web)
“Icarus”: Statement of Donald Duck, regarding his sister’s disappearance in space. (Ducktales 2017, Vast)
“Worldbreaker”: Statement of Gyro Gearloose, regarding a recurring problem with his creations. (Ducktales 2017, Extinction)
“Solemn Vow”: Statement of Twilight Sparkle, regarding her brother’s marriage. (MLP:FIM, Corruption)
“Urban Legend”: Statement of Emma-May Dixon, regarding the local tourist trap in Gravity Falls. (Gravity Falls, Stranger)
“See No Evil”: Statement of Tate McGucket, regarding his fear of memory loss. (Gravity Falls, Spiral)
“War Games”: Statement of Jack Merridew, regarding his time stranded on an island as a child. (Lord of the Flies, Slaughter)
“Dollhouse”: Statement of Coraline Jones, regarding what was behind a door in her new apartment. (Coraline, Stranger/Web)
“God Save the Queen”: Statement of Julie Jenkins, regarding the murders at her high school prom. (The Ballad of Sara Berry, Slaughter)
“Silent Assassin”: Statement of Pam Kingsley, regarding a string of inexplicable assassinations she reported on. (Hitman, Hunt) Title is the highest rating you can get at the end of the mission, after completing it with flawless stealth and little to no extraneous aggression--just go in, murder the target, and slip away undetected.
“God, That’s Good”: Statement of Tobias Ragg, regarding his employment in a meat pie shop. (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Flesh) Title comes from the Act 2 opener.
“Future Imperfect”: Statement of Arven Toro, regarding the results of his father’s research. (Pokemon Violet, Extinction)
“This Be The Verse”: Statement of Beatrice Baudelaire II, regarding her a series of unfortunate events her guardians experienced. (ASOUE, Desolation)
“Mayhem”: Statement of Marla Singer, regarding her boyfriend’s involvement in terrorism. (Fight Club, Desolation)
"Bunker": Statement of Henri Clément, regarding the creature he encountered on the Western Front. (Amnesia: The Bunker, Slaughter)

Fic Masterpost
Oh, boy. Okay. Here we go.
I have written literally hundreds of thousands of words of fic, and this is where you can find it! Consider this a kind of annotated bibliography.
Harry Potter
Lionheart
Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger | 300,000 words and counting
How Draco Malfoy met a girl on a train, ruined his life, started a war, and ended one.
Notes: Oh, honey. This is my baby. The longest fic I've ever written, the currently running one, and the one I'm most fond of. A Gryffindor!Draco AU that retraces all 7 books. Slowburn Dramione (SLOW, slow burn, a simmer, currently more like a suntanning) with Golden Quartet vibes. I pre-write all the books and then release them in weekly updates, kinda like a serial publication, so you always know when your next hit is coming!
Volume I, "Green and Golden," composed of Years 1-3, finished early in 2023. It's currently releasing Volume II, "Son and Heir," which just finished the first act of Year 4.
/
The Climb
Harry Potter, Severus Snape & Harry Potter | 22,000 words
"...in the event that I, Lily Evans Potter, and my husband, James Potter, become deceased," read Albus, "I do hereby name Severus Snape as sole legal custodian of my son, Harry James Potter, until such a time as he comes of age." He folded his glasses on the table. "Fuck," said Severus, with feeling.
Notes: An unexpected brainworm that I had while compiling a Severus playlist for Lionheart, which rapidly spiraled out of control. It's a "Severus raises Harry" fic, which I never had a taste for until I started writing this — I realized there was so much more juice in the narrative idea than I'd realized. I like how I use voice and style here; I think I made a real leap in technique between SWHTWW and this one.
//
Other
the scenes which hold the waking world
Six of Crows, Kaz Brekker/Inej Ghafa, Matthias Helvar/Nina Zenik, Jesper Fahey/Wylan van Eck | 70,000 words
Thirty million dollars for a secret. That's the payout for Kaz Brekker, the most dangerous, ruthless, and talented extractor in the dream industry — if he can manage it. But to have a chance, he needs the best. That means finding a team willing to attempt the impossible: a knife-wielding cat burglar, a college dropout with perfect aim, a sullen ex-Navy SEAL, a drop-dead gorgeous former Soviet spy, and the estranged son of their rich employer. If they can avoid killing each other, they'll go down in history. If they can't, none of them may wake up again.
Notes: This was my first novel-length fic, and I'll always have a soft spot for it. It's an Inception AU with the vibes of Leverage meets Ocean's 11, with a side of psychological trouble and codependency. Read if you like spy movies, heist stories, or dangerous criminals whose Achilles heel is being unable to stop talking shit to each other.
/
someday we'll linger in the sun
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Namor of Talokan/Shuri | 40,000 words
As the legends have it, after she earned the blessings of Bast, the Princess Shuri took a god for a lover. The legends say less about what happened in between.
Notes: Another drabble that spiraled wildly out of control. (You may notice a theme.) I watched Black Panther over Christmas break and thought, "Wow, that's an incredible storyline that didn't actually happen, wish someone would write it." Technically unfinished, but I think the existing chapters serve as a complete story. Unfortunately, no plans to come back to this one; I might mark it as finished at some point, because it feels settled to me.
/
it's a western, henry
Dimension20: Fantasy High, Riz Gukgak/Fabian Aramais Seacaster | 10,000 words
Nobody fantasizes about kissing goblins in the moonlight, or taking them out on ice cream dates after class. Especially not beautiful half-elves on the bloodrush team, who could have anybody they wanted (and probably do). It's the beginning of a bad joke. A goblin and a half-elf walk into a tower... And the goblin ends up slain on the floor while the half-elf walks out with the princess.
Notes: My first fic, which started as a writing exercise. A character study in fantasy race relations and a love story between a nerd and a jock in which the jock is the anxious one. Working title for a while was "it's not easy being green," before I found the fancy Siken line. I still think there's some good humor in here, and I like rereading it from time to time.

fhsy riz gukgak. something is wrong with your reflection. something is wrong with your shadow. you are patient zero, born sick, the door by which the nightmare's hand reaches into your world. your reflection is born of lies, which is not the fault of the reflection but the fault of the deceiver. you're really going to spiral here. you love the truth. you shoot the mirror.
theres a reason riz told the lie that became his reflection. the lie was to protect himself from something feared. the lie was the answer he didnt have. to answer with a lie is to admit that the truth can be known only to you. what riz feared was seeing his own face in the mirror. there was something wrong with his reflection.

We are introduced to Bill Seacaster almost immediately, and immediately know what he's about. He's an infamous pirate known around the world for his awful deeds. He's filthy rich and most importantly, he LOVES his son.
We are introduced to Pok Gukgak only in passing. A small note of riz's long-dead father. And he's left as that for a while, because why would he be anything more. But then he is more, he's so much more. He's a badass and a spy.
Almost immediately we learn that Bill Seacaster is widely known for horrible things, and eventually we learn that Pok Gukgak was never known for all he gave.
With learning about Pok Gukgak comes learning about his death, which as all things involving Riz are, is a mystery. Riz slowly uncovers the pieces to a long warn-out fuzzy picture and even when he thinks he has it all there's always more. He was sick, no he died in a shipwreck, no he was eaten by a dragon, his partner lured him there. Pok Gukgak's death is avenged because of course it is. Riz's goal is to be like him and if he was a hero it's what he would've wanted, it's what he would've done.
Bill Seacaster's death is no mystery. Fabian is intimately familiar with the details. He was right there, he made it happen. Resurrection and incredible feats of healing are very possible in Solace. If Fabian hadn't stabbed him and Bill hadn't blown up, it was very possible that he would've survived. But he didn't survive because Fabian killed him because that's what his dad wanted, that's what he would've done.
Fabian Seacaster has to live up to his father's legacy. Even as he haunts the fiery levels of hell, his memory is still very much alive. Fabian has to live up to his father's legacy, something so very hard to do when his father's name is so boldly written upon the face of the world. The best thing Fabian can do is write his own as a footnote.
Riz Gukgak has to live up to his father's memory. He was a great man who did great things. Right? Riz Gukgak has to live up to his father's memory, a task so impossible as his very name was practically forgotten in the flaming belly of a dragon. Maybe his dad is in hell, maybe he deserves to be there. Why would Riz know? Why would he know anything?
He's nothing like him. He's nothing like him. How can you be like a man who seemingly everyone knows? How can you be like a man you barely knew?
He's nothing like him, but he's like himself. His friends don't need his dad to help save their lives, the world doesn't need his dad to protect it.
They're nothing like their dads but everything like them at the same time. They are notorious and unknown, heroes who do some unsavory things. Their dads are gone but they're right here.

in conjunction with my childhood friends adaine and fabian i also want to propose childhood besties kristen and riz. sklonda is panicking, looking for somewhere to keep riz for the day because she works and penny can’t watch him and so she stumbles upon a summer camp. and she’s exhausted and doesn’t read it twice and sends riz to a helioic summer camp. and then this small 10-and-change goblin shows up, backpack and button up and khaki shorts. and he has dozens of eyes on him and there are men in masks and he’s very, very scared.
and then recently chosen kristen applebees walks up and extends a hand. because yeah, he might look scary, but helio loves everyone and this is a person! and his eyes are large and gold like the sun or big ears of corn and so he obviously has to be blessed by helio. and suddenly riz and kristen are best friends. inseparable. riz eats her brussel sprouts and keeps her from tripping over her feet and kristen is his second best friend. riz shows her the world and helps her realize that her religion isn’t what she thought it was. riz who holds her hands when she starts to have sinful thoughts. riz, who kristen kissed at 11, just to see what it was like. riz, who kristen kissed at 18, because she needed to see if there was something wrong with her (and there wasn’t--kristen was just very much a lesbian in denial).
kristen, who would sit up on the phone to talk riz out of his spirals. who drove him around because the gukgaks could’t afford another car and her mini van was way too big for one. riz, who fit into bricker and cork’s old t-ball shirts. riz, who bandages kristen’s fingers when she bites her nails too close to the quick. riz, who lets kristen tie his ties even though he knows she’s going to do it poorly because kristen looks like she was offered the sun when he lets her do it. riz helping kristen with the children at sunday school and guiding a new generation of helioic followers who have had at least one positive interaction with a goblin. coffee ice cream and milkshakes and evening drives. riz getting breakfast at church after not sleeping for days and barely eating. kristen conning the sweet old ladies into giving her extras so riz can take some home to his mom.
riz holding her hand in the pew, sitting next to the applebees family and squeezing her hand whenever the pastor says something that makes him flinch. kristen aruging that if ragh was allowed to come, to be around dayne and coach daybreak, then riz was allowed to be her friend. kristen fighting and arguing until she’s hoarse. drying tears and messy braids and pinkie promises.
riz and kristen who were the only couple of different races at their prom. kristen and riz who are fiercely protective over one another because they are the only two who love each other unconditionally. kristen, who is running and running and running; riz, who is digging deeper and deeper and deeper until his hands are bleeding because he will put in the work to make sure that kristen is safe. kristen is happy. because she saved his life at 10 years old and he will make sure that returns the favor.

A “Riz & Adaine being lowkey besties” fanfic
The morning after they rescue Adaine & Aelwyn from Calethriel Tower, after she restores Aelwyn’s memory to before she was captured, Adaine is sitting at the back of the Van trying not to spiral. Riz joins her, and they have a little chat.
(This is the first Fantasy High fic I’ve ever written & the first fanfic I’ve written in a hot minute so I’m sorry if it’s not the best but I needed this to exist because I love Riz & Adaine’s friendship sm.)
The songs of the Treants danced through the air around Kei Lumennura as Adaine sat at the back of the van with the doors open wide. Her sister was curled up and unconscious inside, restored back to her unfortunate past self. There had been an abundance of pain seeing her sister weak and broken and vulnerable, but there had also been hope. Hope that maybe this would be a new start for the sisters. Aelwyn had spoken to her in a way that made Adaine finally feel like her equal, finally feeling like she wanted to care for her instead of casting Ray of Sickness at any chance she got. But the world was cruel and unforgiving, so the walk through Aelwyn’s mind had torn her heart out and then had given her no time to grieve.
The old Aelwyn was back, her father was possibly dead, and her mother was working for somebody who definitely wasn’t good. The anxiety was mounting, quickly. She’d taken her meds upon waking up this morning but that just took the edge off enough to keep her from being incapacitated by her panic attacks. Holding Boggie tightly to her chest, she was lost in her own thoughts as the rest of the group carried on. After some time, she was interrupted by a familiar voice.
“So… It’s been a uh, wild few days, huh?” She lifted her eyes from the spot on the ground they’d been focused on to see Riz standing in front of her.
She scoffed lightly and nodded her head, not saying anything.
Riz didn’t say anything else for a long moment either. He moved to lift himself up and sit beside her in the back of the van, his legs swinging slightly as they dangled over the edge. There was a heaviness in her chest.
She wanted to be back home, with Jawbone there to help her through any crises she may have, or at least to have her group therapy once a week to keep her grounded. She wanted to be far away from Fallinel, far away from those who had captured her and were most likely going to execute her. Adaine missed Elmville terribly, and she missed the comfort of familiarity and regularity that it brought to her just as much.
“I’m really glad you’re back,” Riz finally spoke again. He rubbed the back of his neck and turned his head to look at her. “We weren’t really sure what was happening to you, or what they were going to do with you, and that was…” He sighed, “The not knowing was scary.”
“I’m pretty sure they were going to execute me.” Adaine said quietly.
Riz’s brow shot up in surprise. “What?!”
“Yeah. I mean.. I was basically given a choice. Either stay and be their Elven Oracle and do everything they told me to do.. Or they were going to kill me, so the gift of the Oracle could be passed on to somebody else, somebody who would stay in Fallinel and do what they wanted.” The weight of the words leaving her lips fell on her shoulders like boulders. She felt too numb to cry.
“Holy shit Adaine… And your dad was fine with that?”
“Of course he was, Riz. He’s a foul little worthless excuse of a man. We already knew that.” She spit the words out venomously.
Riz said nothing in response, just pursed his lips together and nodded his head silently.
Boggie let out a soft ribbet as she held him in her arms.
“They tortured my sister there for so long… She was like a shell of a person when I found her. So broken and helpless… When she woke up here she asked me if we escaped or if we died and honestly, I’m not sure which answer she was hoping to hear from me…” She was silent for a few seconds before continuing, “Then I thought maybe we’d have a chance to really get to know each other, for the first time like… ever? Maybe we could be on the same side for once… But now that version of Aelwyn is gone and she’s back to being exactly who I always hated her for being.” Adaine let out a shaky breath and pulled her feet up, crossing her legs criss-cross beneath her.
“Does that make me a bad person? For wishing she could be in pain again, and wishing she could remember what she went through these past few months just because it hurts me more if she doesn’t?” She turned her head to look at Riz.
He laughed and she furrowed her brow at him.
“Sorry, I’m not— I’m not trying to laugh at you.” He shook his head and turned to meet her eyes, “It’s just funny to me that you think you could ever be a bad person.” He offered a small smile.
She held his gaze for a moment, searching his face and finding nothing but genuine care and honesty. They’d talked about her family before. She’d told him bits and pieces about her parents, about how they were growing up, about her sister. There had been times when she’d even confided in him how she wished she and Aelwyn could’ve been close. He’d heard her say that it didn’t matter how much she hated and resented her sister, there would always be a part of her that wished things had gone differently. There would always be a part of her that longed to be close with her sister, and a part of her that loved her.
Riz knew what she struggled with. He knew how hard she tried to be the opposite of what her parents were, of what they’d turned her sister into. And he’d always been quick to reassure her that she was far from resembling anything close to them.
Adaine sighed softly before she looked out over the elven sanctuary, taking it all in.
“Are you okay?” He asked after a few more moments of quiet between them.
She scoffed again. “My shitty dad might be dead. I didn’t even get to have one nice day with my sister after saving her from being tortured for months on end. My mom is working for the Nightmare King or Kalina or whoever it is exactly that we’re dealing with. I almost got executed while I was in Elf prison and now I’m basically a fugitive, so,” She shrugged, throwing her hands up a bit as she did. Riz grimaced and she sighed heavily again, dropping her hands onto her lap. “I’m fine.”
Riz looked at her, skeptically raising his brow.
“You don’t seem fine.” He challenged. She turned her head and shot him a look, opening her mouth to say something, but he continued before she had a chance, “You don’t have to talk about it. I’m not here to be a dick, I was just worried about you. I was really worried about you while you were gone and I thought maybe that I’d feel better now that you’re back with us but… I’m still worried.” It was his turn to shrug, lifting his shoulders and letting them fall gently back down.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen with you and your sister or you and your family and these fuckin’ elves. There are still so many things we don’t have answers for and I don’t.. I don’t like not having answers. But when you weren’t here it just became so much more clear to me that nobody—” He stopped himself short, scrunching her nose in thought for a moment before continuing, “We can’t— I can’t do this without you.” He adjusted the hat atop his head. “This isn’t gonna happen again. I won’t let it happen again.”
“Well we seem to have taken down Calethriel Tower so I don’t think it could even if you wanted it to.” She said teasingly.
“Yeah I wanted to ask what happened with all that but there hasn’t really felt like a right time?”
“Oh, Fig played her bass and it cracked a gem that made the whole thing come crumbling down. It was kind of rad, honestly.”
    Riz chuckled softly. “Wild..”
“Yeah, but I didn’t really expect anything less.” Adaine laughed along with him.
Another silence, comfortable and soft, settled between them as they looked out into the sanctuary, Fabian still dancing as the rest of the group encouraged him.
Still looking forward, Riz spoke again, “I’m sorry you got kidnapped and held as a prisoner, Adaine. We should’ve protected you so much better than we did. I wanted to come break you out sooner but we had some hang ups when we first got here, a bit of culture shock that set us back longer than I wanted and then the usual nonsense that set us back even more. I didn’t want you feeling like we were partying and having a good time and enjoying ourselves while you were being tortured or whatever... It felt fucked up.”
“That’s because it probably was a little fucked up.” She said, an ever-so-slight grin on her face as she teased him.
“I know,” He sighed, not completely acknowledging her teasing tone, “I couldn’t enjoy any of it. Fabian’s grandpa is too much to handle, honestly, and I thought the trees were kind of a nice vibe but then they started singing and it’s just…” He shook his head, clearing his thoughts and refocusing, “I’m just glad you’re with us again… This whole thing,” He gestured around to the rest of the party, to the van, to their surroundings, “Isn’t the same without you.”
She pursed her lips and gave a small smile, nodding her head slightly.
“I’m here if you ever want to talk, you know that, right?” He turned his head again to look at her, holding eye contact with her.
“I know,” She parroted the words he’d said not but a few seconds before, but sounding much gentler. Thanks, Riz.” She smiled at him. It was a saddened, anxious, and broken smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Anything for my best friend.” He replied, giving her a small smile and nudging her side gently with his elbow.
After a few more seconds of silent eye contact, communicating thoughts of understanding and concern and care that Adaine felt too exhausted to have exchanged out loud, they both looked forward again. Sitting in silence, no longer alone, the comfort of Riz Gukgak’s presence beside her helped her feel like maybe she’d be alright outside of Elmville for a little while longer after all.

Eventually I’m just gonna go on a classic Riz Gukgak spiral and start a conspiracy board and based entirely around me trying to figure out Arthur Aguefort
