Fashion archival: Indian Fashion in the early to mid 2000s (Magazine scans)
The indian fashion scene as we know it today rose to what it is due to rapid changes in the 80s and 90s, with the first generation of fashion designers such as Satya Paul, Ritu Kumar (One of India’s earliest designers--beginning her career as early as the 60s!) and others, and the ministry of textiles establishing the National Institute of Fashion Technology.
The 90s saw the birth of iconic fashion staples (such as the kurti by Monisha Jaising, Manish Malhotra’s ‘cocktail sari’ and bollywood glamour) propelled by these fresh breed of designers, and also saw the birth of the Fashion Design Council of India (which was instrumental in launching fashion weeks in the country). This was largely due to the liberalisation of the Indian economy in the 90s. As Indian fashion has carved a niche for itself in the global fashion industry, it’s really interesting to take a look back at some of the fashion magazine pages from the early to mid 2000s. (Especially with the y2k trend/ fascination with 2000s fashion still going strong!)

BRAND that sells nice Kurtas for women
Here are my personal favs
1. W- the are now selling the best elegant, graceful and mordern kurtis and Kurtas that serves the purpose of both world. They can be easily worn as office wear yet looks equally nice when going out shopping. Pair it with some beige or black heels and you’ll rock the look
2. Global desi: I wouldn’t mind putting Mrs. Anita Dongre Mam’s brand on number 1 but this is my choice eventually. Has girly look to each kurti. For examples putting flowers, birds, stripes pattern makes them for modern girl of today. My mum also wears Global desi and she also looks pretty on those girly prints. They however have their best kurtis on non cotton fabric which makes them my second choice.
3. Lakshita: They might not have their presence across India like the other two brands but they majorly cover Delhi NCR. The Kurtis have a nice muslim touch in each of its design. Little pricey but can easily wait for its sale which gives 50% discount mostly.
4. Gerua: I liked this brand. It gives cotton short and long Kurti and Kurtas at a very decent price. Can wear those cotton Kurtis amidst morning walk, late night walk or at home.
5. Ritu Kumar: These are those Kurtis that I see Alia Bhatt, Sara Ali Khan wearing in an interview. It has all the intricate details that only girls would want and notice. Very high priced. But if youre rich and want a desi clean look. Please buy them, wear them or gift me few.
Other brands that I would recommend are: Shopperstop, all about you if you are thin like deepika padukone then go ahead, max for that bohemian chick style top like kurti. I can only think of these few right now. Goodnight if anyone reading it.
