A scene from Barbie: High Sea Adventure by Rita Balducci
In the 1990s there was a series of Barbie chapter books for children with photo illustrations. Dolls were customized and redressed in detailed clothing to suit fairy tale and historic settings, and posed in dioromas with miniature objects.

Headcanon; Clara Staulbahm
As in the 1991 Little Golden Book version by Rita Balducci and illustrated by Barbara Lanza, the nutcracker Clara receives from Uncle Drosselmeyer is not on a stand like we know today. He is a wooden doll that happens to have the same mechanism as our typical nutcrackers. His arms and legs are somewhat articulated, as seen in the illustrations.

503 collections expected (versus 437 at the previous winter edition), 280 of which from abroad (53% of the total), and over 6,900 buyers, making a total of just under 10,000 visitors at the last winter edition: these are the figures for Pitti Bimbo 84. From 19 to 21 January 2017 at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Pitti Bimbo is the most important international fair, in terms of quality and research, dedicated to children’s fashion.  The reference platform for all the big international children’s fashion brands and the preview launch of collections for kids and, at the same time, an extraordinary incubator of trends that is once again investing in research and across-the-board proposals.   In fact, at this edition it will launch new exhibition projects that portray the multi-faceted lifestyles and dialogue with the creative frontiers of the most sophisticated concept stores.  The new features include The Nest, the project that selects and presents niche brands with a high creative content; the Fancy Room which offers accessories, special design and technology products, for fun, curious lifestyles.  Plus there are the new Pitti Bimbo Editorials with the selection of accessories proposed by Pet Family, designed for the family’s other little ones; and Mini Traveler, which proposes lots of fun objects for traveling.  Moving on to the new series of special catwalk shows dedicated to the luxury collections of Apartment and the experimentation of Kidzfizz.  And much more just waiting to be discovered!
PITTI DANCE OFF, the theme of the winter fairs
Pitti Dance Off is the theme of the Pitti Immagine winter fairs. The protagonist is dance as the need to move around in rhythm to express oneself, as energy, as freedom of personal style.  It will be playfully and ironically represented by a gesture, the finger tut, in the spirit of street dance and destined to spread virally.  A kind of “tell me how you dance and I’ll tell you how you’ll dress”’: next January, young and old alike will be moving to the rhythm of Pitti Dance Off.  With a layout project curated by Oliviero Baldini.
Some of the HIGHLIGHTS of this edition: launches, special projects and returns
Monnalisa premieres the new Monnalisa Living by Savio Firmino concept, a special collection of co-branded furnishing accessories with the famous Florentine company, the result of the meeting of two excellences in their respective sectors.
Elisabetta Franchi debuts with Elisabetta Franchi La Mia Bambina: the brand’s first collection for little girls, a proposal which is rich in volumes, fabrics and details that “steals” some of the wearability of the women’s collection.
John Richmond Jr returns to the fair in order to reaffirm a unique style that combines brashness, a luxury inclination and street style, adapting them to the world of children;
THE Apartment and Kidzfizz CATWALK SHOWS “grow up”
After the success of the previous editions, the catwalk shows dedicated to the luxury collections showcased in Apartment and the research of Kidzfizz are broadening their horizons.  In order to accommodate an even larger audience of press and buyers, for the first time they will be staged at two different times in the Sala del Rondino, in an area which has been specifically reinterpreted and designed, a special location.
PITTI BIMBO EDITORIALS
After the success of the last edition, the Editorials – two large walls on the Lower Level of the Main Pavilion which display experimental, curious and special objects return with new topics.
PET FAMILY: an extended family that includes the other “little ones” of the home.  Objects and furnishing accessories for them and referred to them – our new “‘inspirational muses”.
MINI TRAVELLER: from one house to another, on vacation, on an away trip, following their parents around: children are dynamic. Mobile accessories for long or short trips!
FANCY ROOM, a journey into children’s lifestyles, from design to mini accessories
Fancy Room is the new space dedicated to children’s lifestyles: from design to small accessories, from gadgets to technology, the winner is always creativity.  Located on the Lower Level of the Main Pavilion, a catalyzing and entertaining island-space where it is possible to discover a series of special products. Accessories, furnishing elements, games, pocket technology, useful and useless, curious and irresistible objects which have been lined up in order to make their debut in concept stores all over the world.
The names include: Caco Design, Cute Cute, Design Letters & Friends, Enfance Paris, Fior di Coccole, Hape, Ivory, Lapin & me, Legami, LuckyBoySunday, Lullaby Road, Miss Nella, My Nametags, Nailmatic Kids, Noé & Zoé Berlin, Passapò, Popqorn, Prestige, Rò.Rò, Vandoma.
And for this edition, Fancy Room will also include Fun Glasses, the space realized in collaboration with MIDO – leading international trade fair for the eyewear – and dedicated to the world of eyewear for children, with names like: See Concept, Swing Eyewear, Zoobug.
THE NEST, a focus on small independent brands from all around the world
The Nest is the new project dedicated to creative research in kidswear.  An exclusive selection of small independent brands and “up-and-coming” companies showcased on the Lower Level of the Main Pavilion, selected in collaboration with Little Pop Up Berlin, the Berlin store/concept lab.
The names are: Atelier Choux Paris (France), Carlota Barnabe (Portugal), Cherry Papaya Kids (Portugal), Fruitytu (Israel), Garbo&Friends (Sweden), Grace Baby & Child (Portugal), Kalinka Kids (Bulgaria), Krisko Design (Hungary), Lieblinge (Germany), Mara Mea (Germany), Monkind (Germany), Poupee (Greece), Robe of Feathers (Germany), Sommer & Kinder (Germany), and Where is Marlo (Switzerland).
THE EXTRAORDINARY LIBRARY, a special space for publishers of excellence from all over the world
The collaboration continues with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair with which Pitti Bimbo has launched an annual competition dedicated to the world of illustration which was presented at the last edition in June. For this latest rendezvous, the collaboration will be bringing “The Extraordinary Library” to the fair, a very special project and bookstore and a unique occasion for buyers: a selection of small publishing houses par excellence from all over the world will be showcased in the Medici Pavilion with their 100 books for children and their extraordinary pages.
KIDZFIZZ, Pitti Bimbo’s creative laboratory
KidzFIZZ, the children’s fashion project that brings together the most creative collections by brands that experiment with shapes, materials and presentation styles, confirms its new bigger size: it is a proposal dedicated to a more evolved international public.  In line with the new kids’ lifestyle global scenarios, KidzFIZZ is aiming for research, creative exploration, the contamination between fashion and design and the significant presence of accessories.  Staged inside the Medici Pavilion and at the Archivi, with a layout by Storage Associati, KidzFIZZ is increasingly Pitti Bimbo’s concept laboratory. It will also feature a special dedicated catwalk show in the Rondino. The new names include: 1+In The Family, AO76, Caramel Au Sucre, Carbon Soldier, Cataleya, Danbookun No Nikki, Florence Fancy, Little Indians, Motoreta, No Added Sugar, Little Ones, Omibia, Oscar et Valentine, PopUpShop, Sonatina, Tago, Treehouse by Anja Schwerbrock, Vivetta, Wolf&Rita.
APARTMENT, luxury collections & contemporary lifestyles
In January the protagonist will once again be Apartment, the project dedicated to sophisticated contemporary lifestyles for children’s fashions: a unique section furnished according to Ilaria Marelli’s creative project that contains a sophisticated grouping of international clothing and accessory collections aimed at buyers from the most exclusive boutiques.  In the Rondino a special catwalk show will recreate the atmosphere of an atelier, using maison haute couture presentation methods. The names include: Caramel Baby & Child, Hucklebones, Joshua Sanders, Lamantine Paris & Milan, Leoca Paris, Minna Parikka, Pèro, Stella Jean, The Grey Rabbit, The Small Gatsby.
Kartell Kids @ Pitti Bimbo: Fabulous recipes and tasty Stories
The Kartell Kids line will once again be showcased with a special installation: an exceptional project realized with Chiara Maci will feature six recipes researched by the famous food blogger exclusively for the brand, each one of which will be matched to a product in the kids’ line.  Tasty stories for curious creations: this is the heart of #casamaciloveskartell.
The Main Pavilion and the big children’s fashion brands
A journey through big brand fashions, new luxury clothing for infants, kids and teens: international level brands which present their collections complete with accessories and projects for retailers.  The Main Pavilion will feature a rich selection of proposals distributed according to a new exhibition game, with an eye on the trends of “adult” fashion. The names include: Balducci, Bellerose, Diadora, Elisabetta Franchi, Ermanno Scervino, Ice Iceberg, John Richmond Jr, Kenzo, Laura Biagiotti Dolls, Little Marc Jacobs, Manuel Ritz, Mimisol, Miss Blumarine, Miss Grant, Monnalisa Living, MSGM, N°21 kids, Nina D, Patrizia Pepe, Petit Bateau, Philipp Plein, Stefano Ricci Junior, Twin Set Simona Barbieri, Yves Salomon Enfant.
EcoEthic. Pitti Bimbo’s Green Generation is growing
At this edition the numbers are on the rise for EcoEthic, the section dedicated to green issues: the best brands that make sustainable fashion part of their signature. These companies, from all over the world, use organic and biological materials that are produced with respect for nature and in a chain that protects local manufacturing and small communities while helping to save our planet.  The names include: Agunga, Frilo Swissmade, Gray Label, Joseph’s Little Monsters Supply, Kidiwi, Mamie et Moi, Naturapura, Oil & Carol, Pura, Risu Risu, Virus, Wooly Organic.
Sport Generation: even more freedom to play
Sport Generation, the planet that hosts the big names in sportswear and activewear, consolidates its dedicated spaces.  The companies that choose the Cavaniglia Pavilion and its appendages as their stage are increasingly international. Once again the proposals at Sport Generation will be broadened by an offering of lifestyle products designed for the littlest ones, to complete the kids’ wardrobes in the light of a new 360°concept.  The new names and re-entries include: Blauer, Canadiens, Emu Australia, Fabric Flavours, Finger In The Nose, Hatley, Herno, Holly and Beau, Lupaco Munich, Molo, OOF, RRD, Save the Duck, Someday Soon, Sways, Woolrich Kid.
