TUNNEL #29
Tumblr media
Looking at some random downloads, realized a common theme was that Tunnel #29 is The. Cutest. Tunnel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 2% grade from Denver up to the Moffat Tunnel crawls through South Bend Canyon (along South Bend Creek) with superfluous tunnels and a surfeit of sharp curves, thanks to the mandate of then-Chief Engineer H.A. Sumneso who surveyed the Moffat Route's well-nicknamed "tunnel district" at bountiful π/1 ratio of rail to "as the crow flies" distance as he tried every trick not to make it steeper than 2%
Tumblr media
A blasted rock bore barely 78 feet in length, tight-clearance Tunnel 29 on the Moffat Route is at milepost 36.38 and sandwiched between one of Sumneso's super-tight 12° cruves and the "curved bridge with no name" over South Bend Creek (which is officially named "Bridge 36.45" after it's milepost location) The feature on the creek's right bank seems to be locally nicknamed the Gibraltar Cliffs, from whence railfans look down on the tiny trains below.

The cutest tunnel? Yep. Did I mention the Ski Train?

Our Railway's Number 9, and my second engine, Zephyr. When I last drove her she was severly allergic to staying on the rails at speed. Hopefully this latest update fixed that, as she is a lovely engine, and well behaved as long as you watch her speed.

Wasatch Wonder Wall por James Belmont Por Flickr: The sleek Rio Grande Zephyr charges eastward through Spanish Fork Canyon at Rio, Utah on Sept. 13, 1981. D&RGW's Budd dining car "Silver Banquet" was at the time missing, undergoing a rebuild in Denver. A former UP dining car, nicknamed the "Golden Banquet", substitutes. The verdant slopes of 10,687 Loafer Mountain provide a magnificent backdrop.

Rio Grande Zephyr
This is a westbound Rio Grande Zephyr at Colton, Utah. Just a bit further up the line is Soldier Summit. The second image was made at some point later I believe, but shows several of the domes which made up this fantastic train.
The Denver & Rio Grande Western was one of about three major railroads that eschewed joining Amtrak in 1971—along with the Southern Railway and Rock Island.

Last look at the Rio Grande Zephyr
flickr
Last look at the Rio Grande Zephyr por G Morris Por Flickr: March 1983 The end was near as myself and a few friends decided to make one last Denver-Salt Lake City roundtrip on the RGZ. The next day after that great trip we caught the train - in a March snowfall - one last time leaving Denver. In a few weeks it would be over. Enjoyed many a chase and ride on this excellent train. Hard to believe it has been over 40 years !
