Upcoming Marvel Movie Releases: Complete MCU Phase 4 Schedule
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
We’ve got everything you need to know about the upcoming Marvel movie schedule all in one place! The Marvel superhero movie plan now stretches all the way to 2023 (and beyond). The amazing thing is, it’s even more ambitious than we anticipated, with new movies getting announced all the time. It looks like even something on the massive scale of Avengers: Endgame was only the beginning. How can anything ever be bigger than that crazy Avengers: Endgame finale?
Well, it looks like we’re going to find out…eventually.
We’ve compiled as much information as we can find on every Marvel movie coming out in the next few years in a handy release calendar for you. This is where you can check out all the details on Marvel Phase 4 and beyond. You probably want to know a little more about the future of the MCU and all the other Marvel movies in development. Well, we’ve got you covered! However, be advised, almost every single MCU Phase 4 date has recently shifted because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which is wreaking havoc with every industry in the world, so update your calendars accordingly!
These dates have already shifted several times recently, and the most recent changes affect Black Widow, Eternals, and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Don’t be surprised if they continue to move as things develop with the pandemic, but hopefully by the time Black Widow is ready to come out, we’ll have reached the end of this nonsense.
WandaVision
release date: December 2021
Yes, technically this isn’t a movie release, but with all of the release date changes, and the fact that it has been over a year since the last actual MCU release, we’ll take the good stuff where we can get it. And make no mistake, WandaVision very much appears to be the good stuff.
Ever wonder what happened to Wanda after she went all Scarlet Witch on Thanos in Avengers: Endgame? Well, you’re gonna find out in WandaVision, which appears to depict a grief-riddled Wanda dealing with the death of Vision in less than healthy ways.
Elizabeth Olsen is, of course, back as Wanda, and so is Paul Bettany as the Vision. This show is going to have serious ties to the MCU, with elements that will be important for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Captain Marvel 2 having prominent roles. The trailer is packed with MCU strangeness, which we wrote about here.
WandaVision is the first of a number of MCU focused shows coming to Disney+ over the next year. 2021 will also bring us Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. Since these will also be vital to the future of the MCU, we’ll add them to this calendar as they get release windows and/or trailers get released.
Black Widow
Release Date: May 7, 2021
The Black Widow movie was heading for a May 1, 2020 release before the coronavirus outbreak, but Disney and Marvel have decided to delay it until the industry’s infrastructure is back to some semblance of normal. First they bumped it to November, but now we have to wait almost a full year from that originally scheduled date before we see Natasha and friends.
Cate Shortland directed the film, and Scarlett Johansson stars, with Florence Pugh and David Harbour alongside her. One of the movie’s villains is Taskmaster, and we wrote a little bit more about him right here.
Natasha Romanoff will get a prequel movie of sorts here, as we catch up with Widow around the events of Captain America: Civil War. Will the plot affect her character’s ultimate fate in Endgame? Do not count on it.
We have more information on the Black Widow movie right here.
Morbius
Release Date: March 19, 2021
Spider-Man spinoff Morbius is Sony’s next big Marvel release, and it’ll officially be the first spinoff to properly connect to the MCU.
Safe House‘s Daniel Espinosa directs from a script by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, as former Joker Jared Leto plays the anti-hero biochemist who finds a cure for his rare blood disease by using vampire bat blood. As you can imagine, there are consequences: he turns into a living vampire, for one.
Um…don’t be surprised if this one ends up moving off this date at some point at the rate we’re going.
Read more about the character of Michael Morbius here, and find everything you need to know about his upcoming movie, right here.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Andy Serkis (Mowgli) steps behind the camera for Venom 2, which now boasts the catchy title of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, replacing Ruben Fleischer as director this time around. The first film, buoyed by a terrific showing at the Chinese box office, made an absolute ton of money, despite being released to mostly scathing reviews.
Venom 2 will follow up Sony’s 2018 Spider-Man-less spinoff film, but will likely be more connected to the MCU this time around, thanks to a renewed deal between the company and its Marvel Studios partners. Tom Hardy will return as Eddie Brock, of course, and as you can probably guess from that title, he’ll be facing off against Woody Harrelson’s villain, Cletus Kasady aka Carnage!
This one was originally tentatively scheduled for October, 2020, but has been shuffled away for the moment as studios continue to move release dates around because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Read everything else you need to know about Venom 2.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Release date: July 9, 2021
Simu Liu has been cast as the titular Shang-Chi and Tony Leung as The Mandarin (hey, that name sounds familiar! But this time, we’re getting the real Mandarin on screen). Destin Daniel Cretton is directing from a script by Dave Callaham. Given its “Ten Rings” title, Shang-Chi should be steeped in Marvel lore!
This has been delayed twice. Let’s hope that’s the end of it. At least it has resumed production!
We have more info on the Shang-Chi movie right here.
Spider-Man 3
Release Date: Nov. 5, 2021
While the next Spider-Man movie doesn’t have a title yet, it’s happening, and the best news of all is that it’s happening in the MCU! Marvel and Sony solved their differences, good sense prevailed, and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will remain a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No other details, not even a title, are available at this time, but we’ll update this with more information as it becomes available!
Say it with us now: this date is probably going to move, especially because November also sees the release of…
The Eternals
Release Date: Nov. 21, 2021
The Eternals has completed principal photography and is on post-production. Chloe Zhao is directing from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
The cast features Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, the Black Knight.
This one was another victim of the release date shuffle, having moved from February of 2021 to November of that year. We’ll get to see Jack Kirby‘s wildest creations eventually!
You can read more about The Eternals movie right here.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Release Date: Feb. 11, 2022
Taika Waititi, who gave us the delightful Thor: Ragnarok, will return to write and direct. Chris Hemsworth will be back, but will it be as Thor? Natalie Portman is your new Thor (yes, you read that right, Jane Foster will wield the hammer…just as she did in the comics!). Christian Bale has also joined the cast. We have some guesses about who he might be playing, but we’re not totally sure yet.
We have more info on Thor: Love and Thunder right here.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Release Date: March 25, 2022
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looks like it will open up the storytelling possibilities in the MCU like never before. And that’s just based on the name alone. Scott Derrickson was scheduled to direct, but has bowed out because of “creative differences” with Marvel. But the good news is that Marvel found a suitable replacement in none other than Sam Raimi, who of course has plenty of superhero experience thanks to his Spider-Man trilogy in the early 2000s! There are also a few rumors doing the rounds that Jericho Drumm aka Brother Voodoo could be introduced in this sequel. We’ll keep an eye on that and update this if there’s any substance to them.
We have more information on Doctor Strange 2 right here.
Black Panther 2
Release Date: May 6, 2022
Black Panther 2 is still on Disney’s release schedule, despite the tragic, untimely death of star Chadwick Boseman. It’s unclear if Marvel plans to recast the role, but that seems like a difficult, even unwise proposition at this time.
Ryan Coogler will return as director, but there are no other details currently available. We have more information on Black Panther 2 right here.
Captain Marvel 2
Release date: July 8, 2022
WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell has been tapped to write the screenplay for Captain Marvel 2. You know what else is really cool? Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta will direct!
We have no idea where we’ll find Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) in the sequel to her hugely successful first standalone MCU entry. Will she be fighting to loosen her former Kree pals’ iron grip on a pre-Avengers galaxy? Or will the follow up film see her fighting for justice in the present?
Read more about Captain Marvel 2 here.
And then there are still some dates that Marvel has announced that they have yet to match projects to. Those dates are…
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel
Release Date: October 7, 2022
Is it technically an MCU movie? Nope. But with all the legal weirdness going on between Marvel and Sony, and this franchise’s very multiversal concept, who’s really to say that it ISN’T an MCU movie either, right? In any case, the sequel to the best Spider-Man movie of all time is coming in 2022 with Avatar: The Last Airbender mastermind Joaquim Dos Santos directing and David Callaham writing.
There’s also an “untitled Marvel movie” still technically scheduled for this date but…that is almost certainly not gonna happen now. Expect whatever that project was to move to one of these below dates or to some other currently unspecified date on the calendar.
Feb. 17, 2023
May 5, 2023
July 28, 2023
Nov. 3, 2023
Some of those dates could very well be good fits for the following films…
Ant-Man 3
Peyton Reed will return to direct the third installment of the Ant-Man saga, perhaps the most unlikely trilogy in Marvel’s entire arsenal. Paul Rudd will return as Scott Lang, and you can almost certainly expect Evangeline Lilly to return as The Wasp and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.
The villain of the film? That will be Kang the Conqueror, who will be played by Lovecraft Country’s Jonathan Majors. The inclusion of Kang opens up all kinds of interesting possibilities for the MCU, and may even tease the arrival of the Fantastic Four down the line! We wrote more about those possibilities right here.
We’re also going to need fast confirmation on Michael Pena’s return as Luis, though. Luis is key…
This will probably slide in to one of those 2023 release dates above.
Blade
Well this one was a surprise. In 2019, Marvel announced that they will be rebooting the Blade franchise with Mahershala Ali playing the titular daywalker. Ali’s True Detective co-star – and former Blade villain – Stephen Dorff is excited to see what he can do with the character, and so are we.
We have more info on Blade here.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Avengers: Endgame left the team in an interesting place. We broke down some of the story possibilities right here.
After a tumultuous period which saw James Gunn fired and then rehired as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director, he will become the first Marvel director to ever complete a trilogy for the studio. However, Gunn can’t even begin filming Guardians 3 until he finishes production on The Suicide Squad for DC, as well as an HBO Max Peacemaker prequel. Once those projects are finished, he’s free to return to the MCU.
We have everything else you need to know about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 right here.
And as for those others? Well, we’re still waiting on word on Deadpool 3, as well as movies to bring the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the MCU. Could any of those 2023 dates do the trick? It’s very possible! We’ll keep updating this with new information as it becomes available.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

Clear Vision
Tumblr media
In a world of trouble, injustice, mixed messages, heartache, and confusion, how can we determine the truth? In a world often blurry, how do we see clearly? How do we determine truth? By looking to the Source of truth—looking to Almighty God—the One who knows all, makes all, and loves all. Only His wisdom should guide us. Only His truth will prevail. Only He can satisfy and deliver. Only He can heal, forgive, and restore. It is to Him we must look when our world is torn by violence; when our friends betray us; when we’re ravaged by disease; when injustice is evident and obvious; or when we’re heartbroken and confused.
In these days of loss and fear caused by the presence of Covid-19, outrage over police brutality and excessive use of force, protests—destruction of property—further loss of life, and the resignation of faith and truth by people we trusted or admired, how can we determine the truth? How can we move forward with clarity? By inviting God into our circumstances and our world, by repenting and correcting those things we’ve been wrong about, or out of balance in, and by basing our lives off of the plumb line of Scripture. We need to find our center in God and His ways.
How do we manage our fear and our future in a season of illness caused by a virus the naked eye can’t see? By admitting that God is the only One truly in control and placing our trust solely in Him. The keeper of our souls and our lives is God and God alone. Only God can definitively protect, heal, and shield us from the threat of Covid-19 or any other illness or disease. And only God can secure our eternity if we die from Covid-19 or the many other assaults upon human health. For God holds both our present and our eternity in His hands. As Paul proclaimed to the men listening on Mars Hill long ago, “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist…” By God’s sovereign choice we exist in this time. Only by His sovereign grace will we continue to live in this time. And when our earthly life is ended, only by His offer of redemption through Christ and our acceptance of that offer will we live with Him in eternity. God is our hope, our peace, and our security amid the storms of illness and death and all things. We must trust Him with our lives—His goodness, mercy, and love—His protection and plans for us. For only God can rescue us, both now and forever.
How do we respond to police brutality, injustice, and racism? By refusing these things in our own lives and by working toward the diminishment and eradication of these things in our culture. By affirming the greatest commandments of Scripture as articulated by Jesus, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” The Bible articulates that love is a direct act of the will and a pursuit that involves caring for others around us as we would care for our own person. If we love our neighbor, we won’t excessively apply pressure to their neck after they’ve been subdued and complain they can’t breathe. If we love our neighbor, we won’t be agreeable with, or unconcerned by, the injustices perpetrated against our fellow man. If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we won’t settle for man’s divisions of humanity into races, but affirm God’s declaration that we are all created in His image. People of every hue made in the likeness of our Creator. Man’s view of race may be many, but God’s view of race is one—the human race! God declares we are all the work of His hands and so should we. Police brutality, misconduct, and excessive force is an evil no matter who the victim is, be they George Floyd (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vksEJR9EPQ8&t=317s) or Tony Timpa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c-E_i8Q5G0). Racial hatred, the long-term repercussions of slavery, and discrimination in all its forms are evils we should not ignore. God calls us to oppose every form of injustice and evil, especially those evils that are much more embraced in our current times like the evils of abortion, pornography, and drug use. From racism to the sex slave trade to abortion, every form of evil is a buy product of sin and rebellion from God and His ways. We must turn first ourselves and then our culture back to God, back to loving Him and all of humanity, every person made in the image of God. Only by doing this, with consistency, will we see the diminishment of these and many other evils that pervade our world. Only by receiving God’s forgiveness and empowerment can these critical works of righteousness be accomplished. Without God, man will not triumph over evil!
How do we deal with the wounds, confusion, and heartache caused by feelings of betrayal and abandonment? Where do we go when people we trusted or looked up to walk away from Christianity or malign a truth they once professed? Truths we still hold dear. We turn again to God because He has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). The writer of Hebrews declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Lean into God. His ways are eternal. His truth is dependable. Recently, the lead singer for Hawk Nelson and the Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, two prominent Christians, made disturbing confessions. The singer, Jon Steingard, proclaiming he doesn’t believe in the God of the Bible anymore and must embrace agnosticism. And the pro-life convert, Norma McCorvey, in a state of poor health and facing her nearing death, expressed that she never really changed her mind about abortion, but continued her pro-life charade for the money she acquired through her activism. Each confession profound and shocking to many who knew these individuals or who were influenced by their testimony, work, art, and lives. As disturbing and sad as these events have been, Christianity will not be defined by them. Christianity has never been defined by adherents, apostasy, abuse, or the fickle nature of human beings, but by the person and work of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit’s communication of that work. Either the gospel and God’s revelation is true or it isn’t. A choice all must face. One based upon God’s testimony and no other. We must all decide for ourselves the question posed to Peter and the disciples by Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-17). A question that when answered leaves no ambiguity. If Jesus is God, as I believe Him to be, then follow Him. If Jesus is not, then follow whomever or whatever you wish. But be aware that if the testimony of Jesus is true then there will be an accounting. My prayer is that God would bring Mr. Steingard back home through repentance and faith, that He’ll be gracious to Miss McCorvey in eternity, and that the world will answer Jesus’ question the way Peter did, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Do not let your heart be troubled—God is still in control, Jesus is still interceding for us at the right hand of the throne, and He has never tired of His love for us. He died to assure us of His love, but He rose to solidify it! He is our Source. He Is the truth. Listen to Him!
But one may ask, is God still speaking today? As a Christian, I believe the answer is, yes. God has both spoken in the past and is still speaking today. So how do we hear Him? By seeking, consulting, asking, and listening to Him. God’s written revelation declares in Mathew 7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” In fact, God’s primary source, the Bible tells us that He speaks through creation (Romans 1:19-21), the heavens (Psalm 19:1-4), angels (Luke 1:19), the entirety of His written revelation, the Holy Scriptures (Psalm 119:160; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21), His people (Leviticus 19:1-3; Acts 5:17-21), Jesus (John 14:10), and His Holy Spirit (John 16:12-15). As one can see form the above Scriptures, God speaks in many ways. God’s Word and His Spirit always speak! In the fourteenth chapter of John, Jesus declares, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” At all times, but especially in these troubling days, let us seek God’s counsel and His heart through His Word as we communion with His Spirit. Let us pray and ask and listen for His Voice. A Voice that assures us, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
God bless, Joel Patchen

Lamenting and Responding (and More)
Haven't written much in while, but I am repurposing this email/letter I sent Saturday to folks in the Christian Political Response group that I started back in 2017. It's audience is intended to be Christians, but it's non-exclusive and reveals some of my thinking.
How to process what we’re seeing in Minneapolis and elsewhere:
·         Jonathan Walton and his Experiential Discipleship team at InterVarsity have put together a collection of foundational resources, including a Liturgy for the Lament of Racial Injustice and a document to help us process and respond to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery (sadly, tragically and infuriatingly, we’ve seen multiple more examples since).
·         New Life Fellowship Church in Queens is hosting a Grace & Race Webinar on Thursday, June 4, from 6-8p ET. You can register here.
·         Redeemer members and attenders may be interested in Redeemer’s Grace and Race Ministry’s statement on this subject here.
Reflections: I haven’t done a lot of reflective writing recently due to work and school commitments (and some laziness), but I wanted to put some things down on paper, so feel free to read or not, but these are my own thoughts, ideas and opinions on topics related to faith and politics. These are a bit hodgepodge, so I apologize in advance.
Qualified immunity: If there is a legislative or judicial policy change that could come out of the continued evidence of police brutality (often race-based), then it might be a roll back on qualified immunity protections. Though this wouldn’t do the heart transformation of the gospel, it would change incentives in a way that could save lives and protect civil rights. Qualified immunity is judge-made law that provides legal privilege for certain types of government officials (including police officers), which often makes it very difficult for victims of civil rights abuses at the hands of these protected officials to receive justice.
You can find calls to end qualified immunity from publications as politically diverse at The New Republic and National Review and two very different Supreme Court justices – Sonia Sotomayor and Clarence Thomas – have expressed problems with this legal doctrine. The Supreme Court is considering 13 different cases that involved qualified immunity and could announce as early as Monday that it will take up one or more of the cases (9 of the 13 cases involve police violation of civil rights, often violently, some lethally). Let’s pray the Supreme Court grants cert for these cases and considers them in good faith.
Putting yourself in scripture: In the Ahmaud Arbery link from Jonathan Walton above is an activity where we write ourselves into scripture, for instance, through psalms of lament. Related, The Park Forum published a devotional yesterday (recalling another post from 2018) called “How to Read Prophetic Judgment.” In it, John Tillman notes that we like to be the subject of comforting prophecy, but we put others in the path of afflicting prophecy. From Isaiah 30:12-13:
Because you have rejected this message,
relied on oppression
and depended on deceit,
this sin will become for you
like a high wall, cracked and bulging,
that collapses suddenly, in an instant.
It’s easy to interpret this passage in our time as judgment on the United States, judgment for the nation’s original sins and the inability of its espoused tenants (often built on lies) to overcome the sin that dwells deeply within it (book plug for 12 Lies That Hold America Captive by Jonathan Walton). That all may be true, but I fail to be transformed by the gospel when I refuse to admit that that I am the “you” in that scripture, that I have rejected this message and that my sin is like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses in an instant.
I pray that we make sincere efforts to not assume that it’s all the bad people who are “you” – that they’re the ones being judged. G.K. Chesterton once was said have responding to the question, “What’s wrong with the world?” with the answer “I am.” This is the sort of humility that our discourse needs right now, and Christians are uniquely situated to provide it, but we fail so often.
On hypocrisy: Speaking of failing to live up to our standards or possibilities, I want to put in a good word for hypocrisy. I am well aware that Jesus makes a point of calling out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (see Matthew 23). The Pharisees were espousing one set of virtues and then intentionally using those espoused virtues as a cudgel to oppress the poor and profit at their expense. That kind of hypocrisy is definitely bad, and even the hypocrisy I’m about to describe is certainly not good, but let me explain.
A hypocrite is someone who proclaims moral virtues while living a life that doesn’t match those proclamations. By that standard, we are all hypocrites. As Christians – and as humans – we all have deeply held beliefs about what’s good and right, and we all daily fail to live up to those virtues. Max Scheler was both an ethicist and a womanizer, and, when questioned about this hypocrisy, he argued that “the sign that shows the way to Boston doesn’t have to go there in order to do something useful for the rest of us.”
Obviously, the calling for a Christian is higher than the calling for a German ethicist. It’s not just good enough to say what’s right and to point to Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of virtue and truth. We are also called to testify to our changed lives and the power of the gospel to do so. I fear, though, in this age when “authenticity” is considered superior to righteousness, that we who are wrapped up in our culture are too fearful to proclaim gospel virtues because we can’t live up to them. But when we mix our proclamation of virtue in the public square (and with friends, family and co-workers) with a humble testimony of failure and sinfulness, we can start to transform our culture. We see this powerfully modeled by Paul in Romans 7, and he was never one to shrink from the public square.
On news, disruption and truth: In an age of instantaneous reactions and viral videos (some of which give a one-sided depiction of events intended to provoke and enflame), I encourage us (and myself especially) to eschew the 24-hour news cycle, particularly if you’re finding that news reports are not driving you to scripture and prayer. Sometimes I obsess over being informed but just end up anxious and, while being anxious, getting a very shallow perspective of reality via social media.
This summer, our small group is reading a book by Alan Noble called Disruptive Witness, “disruption” being having a double meaning in reference to our disrupted, distracted lives and also the way we need to witness disruptively due to the post-Christian culture that many of our secular friends grew up in and have been hardened by. Saying no to a culture of disruption by avoiding the social media-driven news cycle is one way to be counter-cultural and also to bring your household some peace and calm.
There is one new outlet that I think demonstrates how to cover politics and current events without forsaking depth or succumbing to the pull of click-bait content. It’s called The Dispatch, and for those of you looking for some dissonance in your news (without the bad faith of FOX News), the conservative Dispatch might be a good place for you to find news analysis and political/legal podcasts. It’s run by men and women of good faith in a world where there are plenty of trolls and bad-faith actors, and I think it’s important that we have outlets like this, even if your politics don’t align with it. For instance:
·         In his newsletters, David French gives a nuanced perspective on the complicated history of evangelicalism and abortion rights;
·         French debunks some of the legal fallacies that led far-right Twitter to say that Ahmaud Arbery was killed in self-defense;
·         In a podcast episode, foreign policy expert Thomas Joscelyn discusses U.S. foreign policy (especially in relation to China) with hosts Sarah Isgur and Steve Hayes.
Final words: If you made it this far, well, that’s surprising. I pray for safety for you and your family, for your transformation daily via the gospel and scripture, and I pray for our institutions – the family, the church, the government, the media, the academy and more – to be restored as formative places that seek the public good rather than self-serving platforms for personal aggrandizement. We’re very far from there. Lord help us!

I watched a couple of movies! (April roundup)
I’m glad to announce that I finally found a way to rave about the movies I’ve watched without boring you all to death, driving myself to the brink of insanity, and damaging my eyesight even more. Instead of giving a comprehensive review on each one, I decided to give you my top picks for every month in an attempt to convince you to watch these life-changing pieces of cinema! Maybe someday I could include some of the worst I’ve seen as well because it's easier (and more fun) to point out the flaws I spot.
So without further ado, here are the creme of the crop for the month of April!
Tumblr media
Philadelphia (1993, dir. Jonathan Demme) ★★★★★
This superbly crafted film was one of the first in Hollywood to tackle the issue of HIV/AIDS—and with the right amount of sensitivity—during a time when discrimination against victims was at its most rampant. That fact alone makes it deserving of the praise, recognition, and accolades it has collected over the years. Add to that the remarkable performance of Tom Hanks as Andy Beckett, the lawyer fired from the prestigious firm he works for who enlists the help of Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to take this matter to court. His dedication to the role is evident not only in his dramatic weight loss but the intensity of the emotions he brings to all of his scenes. Though I know a lot of audiences are concerned that the account is told mainly from Miller’s perspective, I found this aspect crucial to his growth as a character and the movie’s effectivity as a call to empathy and compassion.
Certified Copy (2010, dir. Abbas Kiarostami) ★★★★½
It's so difficult to review this without giving away what makes it different from anything that's ever been made, probably. But then again, even if I dive deep into the plot and provide my theories, I doubt it’ll make sense so I’ll say this. Certified Copy is a mind-bender of an arthouse film disguised as a love story of the Before Sunset variety. It’s a deceivingly linear tale of a French woman known only as “She” (Juliette Binoche) who goes to a book signing and offers to explore the city of Tuscany with the author (William Shimell). His work asserts that the reproduction of a certain thing possesses as much value as the original, so much so that it can even take its place. The extent to which this is true is shown in the many ways their relationship changes in the span of a single afternoon. It’s normal to be frustrated once you’ve finished it. I had a “What the hell?” moment myself and had to rewatch some parts a few more times. But once you realize that the plot is an artifice, like fiction and art itself, that’s when you come to terms with how real it actually is.
The Farewell (2019, dir. Lulu Wang) ★★★★★
This is practically Wang's two-hour thesis on why grandmothers are the best people on the planet and we don’t deserve them. It's not like I needed an external source to prove it was true but I adored it anyway. This Oscar snub is “based on a true lie”: Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen), the matriarch of a Chinese clan, is diagnosed with cancer, and her loved ones go to extreme lengths to keep it a secret from her. I appreciated the accurate depiction of the mess that is the Asian extended family: immigrant parents, their first-generation kids, and the relatives they left behind at the homeland under one roof can only mean endless bickering and picking at old wounds. But in all seriousness, its grasp of human emotions—as seen in the brilliant acting performances and authentic dialogue—reels you in instantly and keeps you emotionally invested and painfully waiting for the heartbreaking (?) conclusion.
Interstellar (2014, dir. Christopher Nolan) ★★★★★
In what is arguably Nolan’s most complex and ambitious work yet, we find Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) in what appears to be a shadow of the Earth we live in right now. After a fateful turn of events, he is tapped by NASA to carry out a mission in search of a habitable world for the human population. Rarely do we see a creative project that aspires to be everything at once and succeeds with flying colors. Interstellar is that gem for me. It pushes the limits of our imagination and tests the very boundaries of science and space while serving as a reminder of what it means to be human. It may clock in at 167 minutes but I think that if the run time had been cut down, it would be impossible to do justice to this multi-faceted story. In fact, with the emotionally resonant performances by the cast as well as the phenomenal score (Hans Zimmer, you are a god) and cinematography, I am honestly willing to see another three hours of extra footage.
Mommy (2014, dir. Xavier Dolan) ★★★★½
This… was a lot. I remember watching this first thing in the morning a couple of weeks ago, and not being able to do anything of importance for the entire day since I was too busy wondering if I’ll ever be suitable for the lifelong commitment that is motherhood. This award-winning, affecting tale revolves around Die Despres (Anne Dorval), a struggling journalist and single mom to Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon), her hyperactive, abusive son diagnosed with ADHD. Although a law had been passed in Canada which lets cash-strapped parents place their troubled kids in hospitals, she refuses to give him up and takes him under her wing: after all, they’re best at loving even when it’s hard. What unfolds after makes it hard to tell how the whole thing ends, but it’s a visually arresting and thought-provoking experience anyway. Dolan also possesses a strong command of the language of filmmakers: critics agree that its most notable aspect is the fact that it was shot in a 1:1 aspect ratio, which allowed me to assume the position of a next-door neighbor peering through their living room window.
Frances Ha (2012, dir. Noah Baumbach) ★★★★★
Before Greta Gerwig was the director extraordinaire we know her to be, she was Frances Halladay, an aspiring dancer who moves to New York City with her best friend and comes face to face with several, consecutive life crises. Her reality couldn’t be any further removed from mine (as a 19-year-old student on the complete opposite side of the world), but it remains highly relatable. At their core, her problems are rooted in a fear of loneliness and failure—just like the rest of us! Come to think of it, maybe that’s why it’s in black-and-white: to give the movie a sense of timelessness since it tackles themes and issues that remain universal and prevalent across generations. I loved Frances as a protagonist, though she far from perfect: she’s immature and petty and quite frankly, she had no clue what she was doing until the last 15 minutes—just like me! And yet she powered through in the end, which gives me hope that I’ll be able to do the same.
Fight Club (1999, dir. David Fincher) ★★★★½
Believe it or not, despite its straightforward title and predominantly male fanbase, I was completely taken aback when the unnamed narrator (Edward Norton) and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) started beating each other up in the middle of a parking lot—the very event that led to the establishment of their underground fight club. What initially appears to be a man’s search for a way out of the boring humdrum of his everyday existence evolves into a structural analysis of consumer capitalism and critique of toxic masculinity. There’s a lot of gore and violence but I pulled through thanks to the stunning visuals, unpredictable plot, and Brad Pitt’s beautiful face. Although the twist towards the end wasn’t exactly revolutionary for me because it kind of resembled Primal Fear (1996), it was still a mind-blowing and fitting conclusion to this cult classic.
Pretty Woman (1990, dir. Garry Marshall) ★★★★★
This modern-day Cinderella story about a hooker who falls in love with a wealthy businessman has become problematic for my generation. There are a ton of essays on Letterboxd attempting to start discourse on its ethics, calling it out for its misogynistic undertones, and criticizing it for being unrealistic. I actually saw a review that said it indirectly promotes prostitution as a means to get ahead in life, which could wrongly influence teenage girls. (How stupid do you think we are?) At the end of the day, this is a romantic comedy—and an outstanding one, at that! This probably has the most equal distribution of swoon-worthy scenes and laugh-out-loud moments out of all the romcoms I’ve watched, and we have the lead actors’ insane chemistry and the consistently witty script to thank. Needless to say, Julia Roberts is an absolute delight as Vivian Ward and it’s only fitting that it was this particular role that catapulted her to superstardom. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna rewatch this then proceed to play It Must Have Been Love for another 70 times.
The Fundamentals of Caring (2016, dir. Rob Burnett) ★★★★★
I genuinely think that everything Paul Rudd touches turns to gold. Here, he plays Ben, caretaker to Trevor (Craig Roberts), a sarcastic teen suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Together, they make a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a cross-country road trip to see several roadside attractions and of course, come to terms with their own issues. I admit that my love for this comes with the acute awareness that if I had found it on Netflix at a different time, I wouldn’t have appreciated it as much. It’s fairly predictable, it doesn’t strive towards anything complex or require much reflection on our part but it ties together neatly and satisfyingly in the end—truly a perfect comfort film! The equivalent of the warm, 10-second-long, oxytocin-inducing hug that we all need and can't have right now, given the state of our world!
Edit (05/09/20): I’m currently binge-watching Timothee Chalamet interviews and he just told Stephen Colbert that he had auditioned for this but wasn’t accepted for the job. Imagine him and Paul Rudd together... the visual power that duo would hold... I would miss the point of the movie entirely.
So, that’s it for this month! I’ve actually been spending more time writing lately but I hope I can continue to squeeze in something to watch into my schedule so I can actually be consistent with this series. Till next time! Exciting things up ahead! Wishing you love and light always, and don’t forget to wash your hands, check your privilege and pray for our frontliners!

10 Tech and Privacy Hot Spots for 2020
Tumblr media
From whether governments should use facial recognition for surveillance to what data Internet giants should be allowed to collect, 2019 was marked by a heated global debate around privacy and technology. The Thomson Reuters Foundation asked 10 privacy experts what issues will shape the conversation in 2020:1. California digital privacy law - Cindy Cohn, executive director, Electronic Frontier Foundation"A California law giving consumers more control over their personal information, like the right to know what data businesses have collected about them, to delete it and to opt-out of its sale comes into effect on January 1, 2020.The legislation could have a ripple effect across the United States, or lead to the passage of a federal law. This could be good news, if a federal law was to mandate some basic privacy guarantees that states could improve on - or bad news, if it was to instead block stronger state laws."2. Digital strip searches - Silkie Carlo, director, Big Brother Watch"From where we have been to who we have spoken to, our phones contain mountains of data that is increasingly sought after by police during investigations. So-called "digital strip searches", where crime victims are asked to hand over their phones, are becoming common place all around the world. In Britain, victims of rape are now routinely required to give police full downloads of their phones, and police can keep the data for 100 years. It's no coincidence that almost 50 percent of victims are dropping their cases. There's no law in the UK around this and it's likely we'll see a showdown between police, data regulators and privacy advocates in 2020."3. Facial recognition - Jameson Spivack, policy associate, centre on privacy & technology, Georgetown Law Centre"In 2019, face recognition technology became an integral part of the public debate about privacy, as people realised just how much of a risk this technology poses to civil rights and liberties.Public officials have responded, with bans and proposed regulation at all levels of government. These conversations will come to a head in 2020.In the US this could mean new federal, state, or local policies around how law enforcement is allowed to use (or not use) face recognition; rules for companies developing the technology; and/or increased enforcement action from entities like the Federal Trade Commission or state attorneys general."4. Behavioural advertising - Karolina Iwanska, lawyer, Panoptykon Foundation"A wave of complaints against the use of personal information to target advertising online have been filed with data authorities across the European Union over the past two years. The Irish data protection authority – which is a lead authority for Google – started an investigation into the company's advertising business and the British ICO has published a damning report on the ad-tech industry.2020 should bring much needed decisions in these cases, potentially leading to fines and further restrictions on companies' use of people's data."5. EU budget - Edin Omanovic, advocacy director, Privacy International"Next year, the EU will decide its budget for the years 2021-2028. How it will spend what is likely to be in excess of 1 trillion euro ($1.10 trillion) will have a transformative impact not just on its residents, but around the world. For the first time, it will spend more on migration control than on developing Africa, often involving some sort of surveillance, which could pose huge threats to privacy and other human rights."6. AI technologies - Diego Naranjo, head of policy, European Digital Rights"A 2019 report on facial recognition by the EU's rights agency represented a crucial step in the debate that we as societies need to have prior to deploying such technologies, which affect privacy, data protection, and other rights. We could end up implementing practices in Europe which horrify us when they are implemented elsewhere, for example in China. This conversation, as well as examining the impact of other technologies, like the potential discriminatory impact of "AI-based lie detectors" on vulnerable groups, such as migrants, will be an important part of the debate in 2020."7. Algorithms' decision making - Sandra Wachter, professor, Oxford Internet Institute"The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) currently focus on things like transparency, consent and notification of data collection, but not on how we are evaluated after data is collected. This means users have few rights to challenge or contest how they are assessed by algorithms processing their information, which is worrisome since our digital identity steers our paths in lives and impacts our opportunities. In 2020, the EU's data watchdog will publish several recommendations on how to improve data rights. This is a great opportunity to give guidance to transform the GDPR, introducing more controls over how algorithms evaluate us."8. Targeted political ads - Matthew Rice, Scotland director, Open Rights Group"Personal data is becoming ever more central in the operations of political campaigns, as parties buy up commercial data sets in an attempt to derive the voters' opinions and decide whether to target them online and how. This practice stretches the limits of data protection laws and strains trust in democratic systems. With the US Presidential elections taking place in 2020 expect to see a huge amount of attention paid on what personal data parties are using and how they are using it."9. Biometrics technologies - Carly Kind, director, Ada Lovelace Institute"In 2020 biometrics technologies are likely to come under the serious scrutiny of regulators in Europe (and possibly beyond). We're approaching a tipping point in public concern about the increasing ubiquity of facial recognition. In China 84 percent of people surveyed want the opportunity to review or delete facial data collected about them.EU authorities have promised facial recognition regulation will be forthcoming in 2020. It is critical that it looks beyond facial recognition to the entire gambit of AI-enabled biometric technologies that will be rolled out in the years to come."10. Ireland's data authority - Paul-Olivier Dehaye, co-founder, Personaldata.io"In 2020, Ireland is likely to come under increased pressure from other European countries to take a stronger stance on data protection after years of lax enforcement. Thanks to the EU's harmonisation mechanisms, the Irish data authority could be compelled to adjust to the stricter parameters used by its EU counterparts when deciding on the growing number of privacy complaints filed by EU citizens. As Ireland hosts the European headquarters of US technology firms like Facebook and Google, this would have far-reaching consequences across the bloc."© Thomson Reuters 2019 Read the full article

How can we stop being cyber idiots?
Picture copyright Getty Pictures
Picture caption Are you responsible of poor cyber-security habits?
People are sometimes the weakest hyperlink within the chain in relation to laptop safety. So how can we cease doing foolish issues that play into the fingers of cyber criminals?
While you ring IT assist, the geek on the opposite finish of the road thinks you are an fool. It is the heavy sigh and patronising tone that give it away.
In reality, they’ve an acronym for us – PEBKAC. It stands for Downside Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. That is you and me.
And earlier than you get in your excessive horse filled with indignation, ask your self: when did I final again up my knowledge? What number of on-line accounts do I exploit the identical password for? What number of occasions have I clicked on a hyperlink in an e-mail with out actually understanding who despatched it?
Porn-loving US official spreads malware to authorities community
Yearly we’re reminded how dumb we’re in relation to selecting passwords.
These vary from the clearly unhealthy “123456” and “password”, to the one marginally improved “12345678” and “admin”.
Different in style ones, in line with an inventory drawn up from these present in breaches, are “letmein”, “iloveyou”, “welcome” and “monkey”.
Picture copyright Getty Pictures
Picture caption Admit it, you have usually written down your password in a spot anybody might see it, have not you?
With passwords like these, a baby of two might in all probability break in to your account after bashing on the keyboard with a toy hammer for a number of hours.
The very fact is we’re lazy.
“Lots of people neglect their password after which simply use the non permanent password the IT division gave them,” says Thomas Pedersen from OneLogin, an identification and entry administration firm.
“The issue is that these non permanent passwords can typically final a month.”
So in a big organisation, there are doubtlessly a whole bunch of individuals utilizing the identical password.
“This makes them weak to a password scrape assault – taking the most typical passwords and attempting them on thousands and thousands of accounts,” says Mr Pedersen.
“The hackers will get successful each 5,000 to six,000 occasions.”
As soon as contained in the system, the hackers may cause havoc.
How to not be a password poodle
Use as lengthy a password as you’ll be able to address – no less than greater than eight characters
Combine higher case and decrease case characters with symbols and numbers
Attempt to not use simply guessable phrases – the names of your kids, partner, pets, favorite sports activities groups and so forth
Keep away from sharing passwords with different individuals
Use totally different passwords for various websites and companies
Use two-factor authentication
Think about using a password supervisor reminiscent of Dashlane, Sticky Password or Roboform
Main knowledge breaches have gotten nearly weekly occurrences, with Fb, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Reddit, Wonga, and Dixons Carphone becoming a member of an extended record of company victims in current months.
Extra BBC Information cyber-security tales
Two-factor authentication – utilizing your smartphone or a separate dongle to offer an additional layer of safety on prime of your principal log-in particulars – is turning into extra frequent, particularly utilizing biometrics reminiscent of voice, fingerprint, and facial recognition.
However these are much less suited to the company setting as a result of desktops do not often include fingerprint readers or video cameras inbuilt, Mr Pedersen factors out.
We’re additionally fairly dumb in relation to clicking on hyperlinks and downloading content material we should not, says Ian Pratt, co-founder of cyber-security agency Bromium.
Loads of these hyperlinks are loaded with malware – applications designed to burrow although company safety techniques, steal knowledge and even take distant management of machines.
“Greater than 99% of [malicious links] are run-of-the-mill felony malware that aren’t focused,” he says. “That malware is attempting to unfold fairly aggressively, however they don’t use any intelligent methods.”
The straightforward stuff works.
Picture copyright Getty Pictures
Picture caption Many cyber-attacks had been profitable as a result of we clicked on one thing we should not have
“Greater than 70% of the breaches that we hear about have began on a PC with some hapless consumer clicking on one thing that lets attackers get on to the community,” says Mr Pratt.
And hard-pressed IT departments have had their lives made much more troublesome in recent times by the surge in cell phones, laptops and tablets we use for work in addition to for personal functions.
So, many giant companies are specializing in making the desktop PC idiot-proof.
Bromium’s tech works by isolating every motion that takes place on a PC – sandboxing to make use of the jargon.
“Virtually each process carried out successfully will get its personal laptop,” explains Mr Pratt. “As quickly as you end that process we successfully throw that laptop computer away and get out a brand new one.”
Which means that should you click on on a malicious hyperlink, the malware is remoted and might’t escape to contaminate the remainder of the community.
Picture copyright Getty Pictures
Picture caption Would face recognition and different biometrics enhance safety within the office?
However keeping track of what we’re doing throughout a sprawling IT community could be very onerous, says Paul Farrington, a former chief know-how officer for Barclays and now a advisor at safety agency Veracode.
Giant organisations being clueless concerning the extent and attain of their IT belongings is “quite common”, he says.
A venture Veracode carried out for one excessive avenue financial institution found 1,800 web sites the organisation had not logged.
“Their perimeter may be 50% bigger than they initially thought it was,” says Mr Farrington.
And this ignorance also can prolong to the variety of computer systems – or “endpoints”, within the jargon – sitting on a company community, says Nathan Dornbrook, founder and head of safety agency ECS.
One in all his purchasers has greater than 400,000 machines to handle, and several other different clients have comparable numbers.
“The machines include substantial quantities of knowledge and buyer knowledge, passwords to inner techniques, and all types of bits and items within the simple single sign-on functions that cache credentials domestically,” he says.
In different phrases, simply one in all these PCs is an Aladdin’s cave to a hacker.
“If one assault will get inside,” says Mr Dornbrook, “you lose the entire enterprise.”
Extra Expertise of Enterprise
So provided that we’re PEBKACs and IT departments are overloaded, automated techniques have gotten more and more mandatory, cyber-security consultants say.
For instance, ECS makes use of the Tachyon instrument from safety agency 1E to assist monitor thousands and thousands of PCs and preserve them up to date with the newest software program patches and safety updates.
“In any other case you simply haven’t got time to react,” says Mr Dornbrook.
Many different cyber-security firms are transferring from a firewall method to automated real-time site visitors monitoring, on the lookout for unusual behaviour on the community.
However it will actually assist if all of us did not behave like PEBKACs at work and casually give away the keys to the dominion.
