who’s your favorite slugcat and why?
Tumblr media
The Hunter is definitely my favorite! You can’t get better than this lil guy :)
I connected so much with their story when I first played Rain World. Their selflessness, their battle with terminal illness, how they spend their last moments doing everything they can to save someone. It was so cool seeing a slugcat that was so involved in the lives of the iterators for the first time. And on top of that the gameplay was amazing! It was so much fun to challenge myself to learn how to fight and move through the regions quickly and efficiently in the face of danger. Just such an awesome experience.
Tumblr media
But I also ADORE The Rivulet! I actually made an OC back in 2020 named Seven Speaks who followed The Rivulets story to a T. The story of an aquatic, salamander-spliced slugcat repairing Looks To The Moon which then allows her and Five Pebbles to reconnect was something that was very meaningful to me. So seeing it actually play out in the game almost exactly how I imagined it years before was incredible! It was everything I could have ever wanted for a continuation of the story! I definitely cried lol.
Tumblr media
The Spearmaster is also a big favorite :) I love their story, their gameplay, and the broadcasts! I really really loved how their campaign fleshed out the iterators and their relationships. It’s so sooo cool. They’re kinda like an easier version of The Hunter to play which is fun when I don’t want to race the clock. I usually play as them nowadays.
Tumblr media
And AHH THE SAINT! THE STORY! When I first realized what The Saint was my mind was blown. And don’t get me started on the chimney canopy change… I honestly think that was the most effective part of the entire game as a whole. You start in an area of the game where your first instinct is to go “oh I should go to Five Pebbles first, I’ll climb the wall.” You have this whole idea of exactly how you’re going to get there, I mean at this point you’ve done it so many times before. You make your way through Sky Islands and run across the top of chimney, everything is going great, and then the final screen changes. It’s gone. It’s all gone. The confusion of it all before the realization sets in. Five Pebbles collapsed. AH! I don’t think I’ll ever experience something like that again. It was so effective.
I’m going to stop myself before I start writing an entire essay on everything about this campaign. The Saint wrapped up the story of Rain World in a way that was very emotional and fulfilling to me. The only thing I would change is the dialogue between Moon and Pebbles at the end… It fell flat for me when it should have been such an impactful scene.
Tumblr media
But ultimately The Hunter is the best!!! Love this freak!!!!!!

why are they shiny?
fr tho, how do you get them to look like that? its so neat looking
Great question!! My slugcats are shiny because I believe the species is similar to our planet's terrestrial molluscs (slugs). This is not simply due to their name, which is non canonical to the universe of Rain World, but because of in-game dialogue, sound cues, and official art!
I believe that slugcats originally evolved from the purposed organism mentioned in the bright magenta pearl; "a small slug to clean the insides of pipes." Since slugcats are the perfect size to fit snug into pipes and the squishy, squelching sound you can hear when slugcats slide/jump through them, it makes a lot of sense to me that they are descendants of these cleaning slugs. As well, it looks like every slugcat other than The Saint does not have fur in official artworks. And they were described as having a "mochi" like texture by the devs on the most recent anniversary stream.
[at this point I began writing an essay as to why this all reinforces the themes and lore of the game because I’m insane but I will stop myself]
TLDR; my slugcats are shiny because I believe they are hairless and have mucus-y skin which allows them to easily slide through and clean pipes.
Tho also no hate to ppl who draw them furry, it’s very cute! I love how creative the community can get with some of the designs :)
Anyways here is a small tutorial on how I do the shine on slugcats sometimes. My method changes from drawing to drawing but its all kinda based around this! I hope it helps!

What are your thoughts on survivors campaign? :0 And how well do you think downpour preformed as a DLC for Rain World?
Ah!! Two questions I have a lot to say about!
I love The Survivors campaign to death. Their campaign IS Rain World. Before everything, before the Hunter/Monk update, before Downpour, The Survivor was it. That was Rain World—how it was intended to feel, play, be experienced. It is vital to play The Survivor's campaign before anything else. The Survivor is the lens that you see the world for the first time. All the questions, all the frustration, all the wonder. As The Survivor you learn what it is to be a slugcat. You learn how to move, how to explore, what you can eat, and, perhaps more importantly, what eats you. There is no experience quite like the vanilla campaign.
I think we may take for granted how special The Survivor's experience is because we get so caught up in all the cool abilities and lore of the other cats. But none of that would be as exciting or as impactful had we not learned and grown with The Survivor. Their limited abilities are how the game was meant to be experienced, you're not supposed to be special in Rain World. You are a small animal that rests near the bottom of a brutal food chain, exploring a world that has history and beings who are far greater than you will ever be. You are a fly on the wall witnessing the death rattle of an era that has long since abandoned you.
But on top of everything, the pure wonder of The Survivors campaign is astounding. You get to experience every creature, every region, every room for the first time. The beauty and mystery of the world is unmatched here. Sequences like unfortunate development, general systems bus, and the void sea are so unique and awe inspiring. It will be a very difficult task for anything to live up to experiencing those for the first time.
IN CONCLUSION! The Survivor’s campaign is incredible, and I think we all need to give it a little more love.
AS FOR the Downpour DLC. It certainly preformed well in terms of bringing people into the game lmao! The fandom is HUGE compared to how it used to be prior to the DLC. For better or for worse. I'm just happy it isn't so lonely around here anymore at least.
But I personally loved it! A whole lot!! Not everything, but basically everything. I think it does an amazing job expanding on the world, the lore, and the story. There were multiple times where I was so excited and emotional over how the DLC was handling everything. I think The Rivulet and The Saint’s campaign are really amazing overall. And I also adore all the new gameplay mechanics. Though, as stated previously, they do take away from the original purpose of the game. I’m very very happy with it ultimately. I could write essays about each campaign but I shall save that for another time!
Also hiiii sunfish it’s great to see you :) I’ve always loved your work! Thank you for asking these questions I really appreciate it

how do you feel about the watcher campaign announcement? 👀
HIIIIIII SLUGFISH!!!!!! I'm so so SO EXCITED!! I've always wanted nightcat to get a campaign and I'm so happy they're finally getting one!!
I'm most excited about the environment it's set in :) I hope its going to be completely removed from the local group we know. I want NEW perspectives and places and lore. I wanna know more about other parts of the planet; it's biodiversity and ancient cultures.
One thing that's really intriguing me is the new regions they teased. Notably a tundra and a desert, two biomes that are characterized by their lack of rainfall on our planet. Plus how both can co-exist and be traversable by a slugcat within it's lifetime. I'm so excited for the lore and gameplay around it!! And all the new creatures!!! I really hope nightcat/The Watcher is just a normal slugcat or doesn't have crazy powers. I want an authentic rain world survivor-adjacent experience again--as much as I love the characters and gameplay of dp. They've also heavily implied that they're gonna mix up a lot of the dynamics of the ecosystem so I'm :)))) I love speculative biology yay
Also SUPER exciting that the entire original Videocult team is working on it!! I couldn't be more giddy!!! I am terribly, AWFULLY, particular about accurate lore integration so I am a bit worried about how easy it could be mess up the lore due to how complex it all already is, but I'm gonna save my fear and judgement for the final product lol. I'm sure they're gonna do great :)
Very curious about the rot themes as well... I highly doubt the rot is from pebbles. I will be very disappointed if it is. I also hope they integrate it in a clever way and it isn't just rot for rot's sake.
I've seen some people, especially on twitter, fearmonger about it being bad.. So strange to me... We know absolutely nothing we've just gotten a teaser and some screenshots. calm down everyone let them cook this might be amazing. Have some whimsy.
Overall very happy obviously lol. A bit cautious but I have very high hopes.

--downpour spoilers for anyone reading! i know you have a tag but just to be safe :3!! but you mentioned in your favs post that the only thing you'd change about saint's campaign was the ascension dialogue between moon and pebbles at the end and i think i do agree with you but i can't quite put my finger on what bothered me about it. i'd be curious to hear what fell flat for you and how you would change it if you had ideas? ps. ily and so good to rain rot concurrently with you
I have much to say about this!! Big spoilers for the ending of The Saint Campaign!!
Ok this may come off as a bit harsh but it’s only because I’m so passionate about these two and their story.
I think the reason why the dialogue in rubicon between Pebbles and Moon fell so flat is that it is so impersonal! I recognize that this is the moment that Pebbles and Moon both realize the solution to their entire purpose has been found, and thus it makes sense that they would be focused on it. But JEEZ! Are they not shocked to see each other in the same physical space for the first time? Are they not relieved that they’ve both been freed from the immense amount of physical and mental pain they’ve been in for millennia, eons even? Due to both of their states they haven’t even been able to contact each other in who knows how long. Where’s the EMOTION!
So much time and so much strife has passed through their lives that at this point in the story they’ve moved on from simply being computing machines. The iterators have full, human emotions. The tragedy of Rain World comes from how individual and human every iterator is. They are sentient beings trapped and tormented by their physical limits and their great task burdened to them by a society who abandoned them long ago. In this hardship they grew to know and love each other like real family. How could you not display that in the final moments of their existence? I find it so reductive of their characters to just make them soullessly monologue about the solution of ascension. It would mean so much more for their characters if they thought of each other first rather than focusing on the task their apathetic creators forced upon them. All their character development and agency is just gone in this scene.
There is also no distinction between Moon and Pebbles. We get none of their character. They’re just waxing poetic about the solution of ascension and the state of The Saint’s fate. It reads as if one monologue was written with no voice in mind and it was just broken up between the two.
I would have to think a while on how I would rewrite this part, maybe one day I will! Of course I would have them address that the solution to ascension has been found, but only after they actually emote over what’s happening to them. I would have them reconnect, celebrate, and grieve over all they’ve been through together.
Lol thats a lot, I am just so passionate about this story. The rest of Saint’s campaign really hit hard for me though. Especially finding Pebbles in the state he’s in.

Whats your opinion on fluffy scug designs?
I am a very very firm believer in slimy slugcats except for during the Saint’s time where they have evolved to have fur to survive the cold. I could be persuaded towards the idea that they may have short, dense coats similar to an otter though! Regardless they would have some sort of mucus on their bodies to allow them to easily crawl through tight tubes and tunnels as I believe they were originally engineered to clean and maintain them!
However everyone seems to have tons of fun with their fluffy scug designs so that’s great :) I think it’s super cute! My own designs will probably always stay slimy tho.

You've been really quiet. You doing OK?
Yeah I’m good!! So sorry for the radio silence :’) I cycle between posting constantly on social media vs never checking my accounts. It’s a terrible habit of mine. I get burnt out really easily.
I would have been more active lately had I had any free time to indulge in my need to obsessively create rain world fanart!
Actually if y’all are interested, most of the reason why I’ve been inactive is because for the first 10 weeks of the year I pitched and directed a short film about wolf girls and body positivity. It’s pretty cute :) https://youtu.be/TLAmpj80Cbk?si=4HjtX3K8UrUSCfnd
But thank you so much for checking in! Very kind of you :3c

Rain world is one of The Most Difficult games I have ever played (mainly because I cannot figure out what I'm supposed to do/where I'm supposed to go)
Any tips?
Ah yes!! So funny thing—I got rain world when it first came out in 2017 and played it for 18 whole hours before getting so confused as to what to do and quitting. So do not worry you are not alone in that experience lol. I didn’t touch the game again until 2020.
Since I got lost for 18 hours before I wasn’t quite keen on the natural exploration of the game, so I did use the online maps to help guide me before I got my footing as to how the game works. This website is wonderful for this https://henpemaz.github.io/Rain-World-Interactive-Map/ as is this https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=929320046 (this link is helpful for figuring out where each region connects)
Using these guides DOES take away some of the excitement and magic of discovering the world by yourself, but it really helped me when I was new to the game and very very lost. I suggest using the maps as little as possible once you’ve got a feel for how the game and exploration works.
The main thing you want to do is go from Outskirts, to Shoreline (find the subregion Looks To The Moon), and up to the top of Five Pebbles… (should be outskirts > industrial complex > garbage wastes > shoreline > shaded citadel > the exterior > five pebbles) After figuring out that route you should be able to make it to the ending yourself!
One thing I will say is STICK WITH IT! Rain World is an incredibly special game, but you need to give it—and yourself—time and patience. Part of the game is feeling like you’re trapped in an unfair, cruel cycle. But if you can overcome that and see it to the end it will be one of the most unique experiences in video games you’ll ever have!
If u need any specific tips do let me know :) 👍 helping people play and experience rain world is one of my many joys in life lmao
