Count the stars. Count the fragments in which you are reborn again and again. You had a life once: a soul that was weighed between the heart and the feather. Anubis greeted you at the alter. The weight of what you had been. The whispers were loud enough at times. The memories of the past lingered at the back of your mind but you are reborn once again. A God of creation thrown into that of a mortal world. Magic remains as a fragmented memory like a coin toss gone wrong. The cards of fate had been drawn years ago, it could have been years with how it felt but it wasn’t. Egypt was the same as ever.        His fingers drag over the papers he’s translating. A business deal, forma wording. Business in Egypt, while some could speak the tongue making things formalized was different. Atum sighs for a moment. Despite his outward appearance and how he can come off looking different, he is good at what he does and highly sought after. His father had been a proud man when he had taken into being a translator as a business. He rather enjoys it. None the less he has to pause at the Japanese for a moment, and the name of the company that he’s helping writing a formal deal for. The name sounds familar but he’s unable to place it. None the less the folder sits on the table, and his client he supposes is late considering his translations are done but he has yet to be greeted by who wanted the contract. None the less, his fingers clasp around a cup of a red wine. Sipping only gently. It is late in Egypt and he is able to relax tomorrow because it is a day to himself, and this was his ending note of the week, something haunts his mind and he’s not quite sure what.

You breathe. You catch your breath. Your memories are of the past but you are no longer a boy. You are no longer fighting to save the world. You have laid to rest pieces of you. Atem is aware of the weight he carries. The lingering reminder of everything he sacrificed. He is alive and mortal in the world and the times have changed. He is no longer fighting evil and saving humankind. The darkness remains there but a hidden gift for those to inflict harm on harmless people. But Atem allows himself to breathe for now. His fingers touching over solitaire cards, a game he’s playing just for enjoyment.  No longer worried about the life concerning duel monsers or any of that.

It has always been colder in Japan than his native homeland. Yugi was an old friend. Japan had always had a second nature of being home to Atem and he exhales. The fact was he was chilled yes, but it was because he was made for the heat and not for the cold. He had come on a whim. he had been here with her sister and Ra. He knows that he had been allowed to visit among Yugi and Ra allowed him to do as he pleased, as he wanted as long as he had told them but he stands now talking between the blossoms to Mulan.    “I’m alright, it’s just a little chilly.” He mutters to her, but none the less takes the jacket to ease her concerns, and to stop the shivering.

Breathe. The sun lays heavy cross your back. You are alive. Atum allows himself to stand. Body half standing in the nile, the waters cooler in this muggy heat. He breathes, the heat had been to the extremes, but here he stands. Atum is aware that he should not be sneaking out so often but the place is sometimes far too stuffy and he rather walk among his people for a viewing of how they feel.

“ family isn’t who you’re born to it is who you’d die for. ” ( @ Pharaoh Atem )

Rivers flow deep in Egypt. The nile is one of those things that hasn't changed in the decades that he has been alive. Atum breathes out, his lungs catch, once a twice a third time. He knows these lands: he’s always known them. Memories come and go as they please, the memories hidden in his head of a past life. Some are more treasured, others are places he has been to but he has never really left Egypt.     The haunting reminder of a duel that was fought, that they knew the cost and he breathes out. It is perhaps easier that Yuugi is not involved with him. A passing of a soul is better to cope with and move on from than to be known again. Atum knows this even when he dangles his legs over the nile. The boy that she knows, his young cousin Upast. It is a small world, Atum has seen the horrors that child had once been through. This life is a better one that the last one they had been in, his cousins may not be Gods in this life but he is. He breathes and life flows from his lungs, notably in the waters were lotus flowers bloom.      “is that why you stay with him? He protects you like family?” Atum was never close to his mother, she had always been too traditional, too strict. He had driven himself into school to keep out of the clutches of marriage and stay out of that. Her family is the only decent thing about her. His father doesn’t have the same morals as him but remained off his case when he made enough money to support himself.   “Family is what you make of it, some of us weren’t raised by our parents, and some that were wished they weren’t.” He watches the nile. Atum is an only child and sometimes that left a lasting impression on him when he had no one to turn to when he wanted to drown himself in the river he sits by now.                           “Do you believe in fate?”
