Maison Hermès is a building in Tokyo, Japan. It is located at 5-4-1 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo. Constructed between 1998 and 2001, it was designed by Renzo Piano assisted by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Berkeley, California and in collaboration with Takenaka Corporation. The building is the flagship store and corporate headquarters of Hermès, the French luxury empire of Jean-Louis Dumas. It is a 6,000 square metre (65,000 square feet) structure that houses workshops and offices, a shopping space, exhibition areas and multimedia quarters. In addition to a roof garden at the top of the building, there is also a recess which divides the long facade into two, forming a courtyard that delivers an access to the subway two levels below.

Contexto cultural y descripción de la obra

En la década de 1970, los entonces desconocidos arquitectos Renzo Piano y Richard Rogers colaboraron en uno de los edificios más famosos y radicales de nuestro tiempo, el Centro Pompidou. El centro cultural de París, Francia, ha puesto nuestro mundo patas arriba. Todo comenzó cuando Georges Pompidou, presidente de Francia de 1969 a 1974, quiso crear un centro cultural en París que atrajera a los turistas y se convirtiera en un aspecto importante de la ciudad. Con más de 150 millones de visitantes desde su apertura hace treinta y tres años, no hay duda de que la visión de Pompidou se ha convertido en una exitosa realidad.

Para elegir al diseñador del proyecto, el presidente convocó un concurso en el que participó mucha gente, incluidos algunos de los aquitectos franceses más famosos de la época. Sin embargo, la gente se sorprendió cuando Renzo Piano y Richard Rodgers ganaron el entonces impopular concurso. Caracterizado por el constructivismo en su entrada, es un moderno centro cultural de alto nivel construido con un sistema de gerberets y cajas nunca antes visto en el mundo de la arquitectura.

Su concepto, representado en uno de los dibujos de la competencia como un collage, representaba el museo mismo como movimiento. El otro concepto en su diseño fue exponer toda la infraestructura del edificio. El esqueleto mismo envuelve el edificio desde su exterior, mostrando todos los diferentes sistemas mecánicos y estructurales no solo para que puedan entenderse sino también para maximizar el espacio interior sin interrupciones.Los diferentes sistemas en el exterior del edificio están pintados de diferentes colores para distinguir sus diferentes roles. Uno de los elementos de "movimiento" por los que el centro es más conocido es la escalera mecánica (pintada de rojo en la parte inferior) en la fachada oeste, un tubo que zigzaguea hasta la parte superior del edificio y brinda a los visitantes una vista asombrosa de la ciudad de París.  

El Centre Pompidou alberga el Musée National d'Art Moderne, que es el museo de arte moderno más grande de Europa. El centro fue inaugurado oficialmente el 31 de enero de 1977 y desde entonces ha integrado la arquitectura y el urbanismo de alta tecnología como un movimiento y espectáculo para que la ciudad lo experimente todos los días.

Biografía de los autores

Renzo Piano es un arquitecto italiano que, desde 1977 impactó en el curso de la arquitectura moderna. Ha sido clasificado como pionero en las altas tecnologías, gracias a sus diseños innovadores que, lejos de ser ambiguos, establecen una relación entre el marco geográfico y cultural en el que están asentados.

Richard Rogers arquitecto británico, responsable de algunos de los edificios más emblemáticos de las últimas décadas, como el Centro Nacional de Arte y de Cultura Georges Pompidou en París, que diseñó con Renzo Piano, y el Lloyd’s en Londres. Conocido por sus edificaciones pioneras junto a Norman Foster y Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers mantuvo durante toda su carrera profesional un compromiso con la relación entre arquitectura y medio ambiente, cultura y sociedad.
