The Best Friend Scrapbook || twentythree
In Jeno's humble opinion, one of the easiest things to do was to be best friends with Y/n, or so he thought. He spent most of his life with her, if not his family, and it was easy. Like any friendship, obstacles came along the way, but nothing could tear apart the friendship they had built together. Jeno knew everything there was to know about y/n, things that her mother couldn't recall ever knowing. Their life together was documented in a brown leather book, one that Jeno insisted they start because he loved taking photos and printing them out, but he didn't know where to store them. It had been such a long time, and the book was coming to its end, its last few pages lingering. Jeno thought long and hard about what that would mean. Praying and hoping that the end would be further away.
Maybe it meant he should stop being lazy and just buy another empty book and name it The Best Friend Scrapbook 2.0. Or maybe they're too old for such things; they should just reminisce over photos on their phones and stop wasting time and money printing them. But Jeno knew he couldn't do that. Time with y/n was too precious.
Over the time y/n and Jeno spent apart, seeing her on social media stare fondly at another guy whilst he hopelessly stared fondly at her. Things began making sense to Jeno. He always knew he felt something for her; even all the other guys knew, probably the whole damn town knew. Not once had he ever felt the same way about another girl, he tried with Yuna, and whilst she was a nice girl, she wasn't y/n.
Jeno realised that being best friends with y/n was not the easiest thing in the world. It was probably second on his list. He realised that what came most naturally to him and felt the most exciting and fulfilling was loving y/n. Admitting he even loved y/n made him grin and all giddy inside. Nothing could ever come close to how he felt with Y/n. She was the love of his life, and maybe he knew it all along, but finally, today, he was going to tell her.
Seeing Jisung's message to him earlier in the morning, something inside Jeno clicked, a flame, if you will. It sparked inside of him. Both with passion and anger. Anger at the guy who had wronged y/n, the girl who could never hurt a fly, the girl who deserved all the love she could ever receive and more. The girl who shines so bright he wants to be around her always.
It took everything in him not to go investigator mode and find Sungchan's house, 1. he didn't even know how he could possibly do that, 2. even if he could, Jeno was not a confrontational guy, nor could he fight. He would most likely get his own ass beat. But for y/n? He'd do it in a heartbeat.
Jeno thought about confronting Sungchan many times, but the more and more he pondered over it, the more he realised that the person who needed him most probably thought everybody hated her. So that's where he was off to. Not before preparing the things he needed.
—
Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Jeno raises his fist above his head. He can already hear the commotion inside the home, the muffled voices of the boys and a girl. Happiness rings through his ears. Oh, he longed to be a part of all the joy.
"So, it's you, huh."
Jeno's shoulders stiffen, his arm falling to his side as he turns around to face the voice. Sungchan had his arms crossed over his chest down the porch steps, and a not-so-happy grimace settles onto his features. Jeno felt himself going red, anger filling his veins.
"What are you doing here?" Jeno asks bitterly.
"Coming to say happy birthday to my girlfriend, what about you? She told me she hated you," Sungchan slowly ascends the steps, reaching the top.
Jeno stands frozen, not knowing whether he was telling the truth. Did y/n really hate him? This is going to ruin what he had planned.
"Don't you have other things to do? I don't know, like getting with other girls?"
A look of anger passes through Sungchan's eyes before they're disguised with an evil glint. Sungchan knew how to get under Jeno's skin. It was up to Jeno whether he would let him get to him.
"Y/n and I have talked things out; she knows that some jealous girl made those rumours up, so if I were you, I'd step aside cause I don't think she wants to see your face," Sungchan smirks and brushes pass Jeno's shoulder towards the door.
Jeno can feel a piercing ache in his chest whilst it tightens, feeling defeat he was ready to go back home. At the same time, Chenle opens the door, his face pure of shock.
"What the hell is going on, and what the fuck are you doing here?" he exclaims. Jeno whips around to make sure he knew to who that question had been directed to. Luckily it was for Sungchan.
"I'm here for y/n, where is she?"
"Get the fuck out dickhead, she doesn't want to see you. Jeno get your ass in here," Chenle shoves Sungchan to the side, and Jeno makes his way to the door. Not before Sungchan shoves Jeno back and attempts to get past the door. Almost as if it had been rehearsed, Jaemin and Mark make a human barricade, blocking Sungchan's entrance.
"She's my girlfriend, get out the way,"
"No, she's not you idiot, she broke up with you," Jaemin spits out, as he pushes Sungchan back
A sigh of relief escapes Jeno's mouth, and that's all he needed to hear, the anger he had felt earlier when he found out that Sungchan had cheated was making its way back to him. Long gone was the quiet Jeno who let people step all over him. This Jeno was going to fight for the girl he loves, and if in the end he would not be with her, at least he knew he tried.
"Get the fuck out of here, Sungchan," Jeno utters fiercely. Sungchan turns around, anger clearly running through his body.
"What? You're the tough boy now? What are you gonna do?" He taunts, standing close to Jeno and trying to intimidate him with his height. Jeno could care less even if he was taller, maybe even stronger.
"She doesn't want to see you so get the fuck out of here,"
"Say that again," Sungchan hisses.
"Get. The. Fuck. Out. Of..." before his sentence could be completed, he felt a heavy blow to his cheek. Stumbling back in shock, Jeno had never been punched before. He could see the boys pushing past the door towards him whilst shouting, but before they could reach. Jeno had already planned his attack. His hand in a fist, he took the first swing connecting to Sungchan's jaw. Who stumbles back in surprise, not realising that Jeno is stronger than he looks.
Jeno had been working out a lot more, not that he ever showed anybody, but it was definitely paying off now.
The two boys continue to fight against each other, and Jeno's friends watch in disbelief but pride that Jeno actually has the upper hand in this battle.
But it all came to an end when y/n finally returns from the bathroom upon hearing the commotion in her front yard.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON, JENO?" her shriek can be heard from a mile away. Jeno looks up from the ground where he had been on top of Sungchan, holding his fists and preventing him from making any more attacks.
"Sungchan? What are you doing here? Why are you guys fighting?"y/n looks back and forth between the two boys in disbelief unable to comprehend how this could have happened.
"Your psycho friend here has some anger issues he needs to deal with," Sungchan spits out.
"Shut up, we were all here to see it, you're the psycho," Chenle pipes in.
Y/n looks closer at Jeno's face and observes the colourful bruises over his cheekbones and the blood dripping from his lips. Her eyes soften, she hates seeing him hurt.
"Jeno? Are you okay?" She takes a step closer to Jeno.
"Wait, can we deal with Sungchan first. This is a really awkward position," Jeno pleads, his eyes looking back towards the other boys who finally click that they were needed.
They huddle around Sungchan and hold him down, allowing the opportunity for Jeno to get off of him and dust himself off. Mark informs Jeno that they will handle the ex-boyfriend and that he should head inside with y/n.
—
"Jeno, you didn't have to fight him. You've never fought anyone before, that's not like you," y'n sighs staring at the boy in awe. Yes she was reprimanding him, but deep down, butterflies were going ham in her stomach knowing that he had done it for her.
"You know he punched me first, technically it was self-defence,"
"True, but still you could have been seriously hurt,"
They were sitting in the kitchen dining area, chairs next to each other but facing together.
"I know, but you have to admit, that was pretty badass,"
After a short amount of light talking, Jeno had already been cleaned up; the boys were probably still dealing with Sungchan outside. Y/n finally asked Jeno what she had been dying to ask.
"Why are you here?"
"What do you mean? It's your birthday celebration."
"I know, but the boys said you were busy and couldn't make it, I assumed you were still mad at me."
"I wasn't mad at you, Y/n. Maybe I thought I was, but I could never truly be mad at you, I was just doing a lot of thinking, and to be quite frank, I hated seeing you with Sungchan,"
"Yeah, he was kind of a dick. I'm really sorry for keeping you guys in the dark. I guess I was just super naive, and he really was good at manipulating me,"
"It's okay, I understand, I'm glad you're not with him anymore,"
"What were you thinking about while we were apart?" Y/n prompted.
With a bit of hesitation, Jeno knew it was time.
"You,"
"Huh?"
"Yes, you,"
"What about me?"
"Okay, this is something I've been holding on to for a long time," Jeno reaches into the bag he had carried inside and pulls out a black leather book and placed it into y/n's hands.
"years even. I kind of thought I'd never show this to you, I also just bought the book and put it together this morning, but I've written everything inside it over the years. I will let it speak for itself."
Y/n looks up at Jeno, then back at the book in her hand, then back at the beautiful boy staring expectantly down at her.
"Go on," he encourages softly.
Y/n turns over the cover page, and her heart skips a thousand beats when the words of the first page hit her.
Reasons why I am in love with Y/n.

To remember all of your memories together, you both put together a scrapbook, like a souvenir of the best (and worst) times of your friendship. Going into college you prayed and hoped that nothing would change. Although, Jeno’s hidden feelings begin to unravel once new friendships and the new college life begin to unfold. Who knows what could happen next.
