episode nineteen of our podcast is now available for your listening pleasure (soundcloud) (itunes) (acast) ( and if you’re interested in reading more about what we discussed, then our ~recommended reading list~ is below, with all the links and things you could dream of...
we kicked off the episode with a non-punny reference to the tegan and sara song, ‘nineteen’ which you can find a nice acoustic version of just here.
we also referenced the adele album ‘19′; we don’t profess to be huge fans BUT ‘hometown glory’ is a total banger so listen here.
our first news item was ariana grande & pete davidson’s recent union; we discussed the crossed timelines and three very useful articles which helped us fill in the gaps- the post from oh no they didn’t, kathryn lindsey’s piece from refinery29 and from vulture, zoe haylock’s article.
we also mentioned ariana grande’s two newest singles, ‘no tears left to cry’ and ‘the light is coming’- summer jams for sure.
we then went on to talk about steven rodrick’s rolling stone profile of johnny depp (read it here); r u ok johnny?
on the film front, we discussed two recent blockbusters: solo: a star wars story and jurassic world: fallen kingdom.
TV-wise, steph had been watching the sinner, and of course, we couldn’t not mention season 2 of queer eye which arrived on netflix a few weeks ago.
as for music, we mentioned the carter’s surprise drop ‘everything is love’, and that exceptional video for ‘APES**T’, filmed at the louvre AND we spent some time discussing our recent trip to see nine inch nails in london, as well as their newest release ‘bad witch’. if you’re unfamiliar with their work: where have you been?! here’s a FULL live concert from 2013 (the same tour we discussed seeing them in paris) and their appearance on ‘twin peaks: the return’ last year. SWOON.
for our MAIN EVENT, we discussed ari aster’s recent cinematic debut, hereditary (trailer and IMDB); we cited sean fennessey’s interview with the director, adam nayman’s review on the ringer and mark kermode’s review from the observer.
we then discussed prestige horror, using this article by jane hu as inspiration: ‘can horror movies be prestigious?’ and we shared our own top 5s: steph went for let the right one in (2008), the house of the devil (2009), drag me to hell (2009), it follows (2014) & the vvitch (2015), whereas apryl chose the babadook (2014), the vvitch (2015), get out (2017), green room (2016) & it follows (2014).
some bonus picks which didn’t make our (loose!) top 5s: kill list (2011), the autopsy of jane doe (2015), the cabin in the woods (2011), under the shadow (2016), you’re next (2011), a girl walks home alone at night (2014), the purge (2013), sinister (2012).
we also made reference to the recent trailer for luca guadagnino’s remake of suspiria.
AND FINALLY, our obsessions of the week were: ethan hawke (because apryl’s pumped on the upcoming first reformed and this podcast), alex wolff (because he’s great in hereditary and is also very cute as these photos prove) & trent reznor (ultimate hot dad, we’re STOKED ON TRENT. read this recent interview in the guardian, because it’s great).
