Truce in Architecture

Architectural battles have been won and lost over the centuries, not to ineptitude but the apparent misunderstanding of time in architecture. Both purveyors of classical dreams and modern nightmares have proffered solutions to historical problems while 'construction' stands in the wake of the architect; the mother of our art, quantifying the political weight of their argument while being gauged by our economical persuasions to develop the horizon for the future. There are not many well named soldiers to carry the cross out of the shadows and into the public realm while the concept of atonement and democracy are at loggerheads with each other while the persuasion of religion looks on to settle the existence of gods.

Secular buildings are not seen as contemporary as they carry the symbols of the past and provide the notion of our setting sun by orientating themselves to a political enlightenment that strikes fear. This emotion models a body politic that words can not counter; a run away train that in intent on destruction by default. It is architecture that becomes this buffer; an extraordinary architecture that does not need to pretend about its legacy. It supports the need of the moment to stand as a testament to eternity. By scale it reports the aptitude to a critical response that can cultivate new methods of construction while stipulating the traditional ethics of economy; extreme economy with structure as its device. The gravity of the moment shows forth when the undecided in the political maelstrom of our times is seen as the distraction disguised as the avant garde. No one else needs to be turned!

Problems are twofold. Firstly there is a need to answer a question, then there is a need to forgive and forget it and restore faith in the precepts of critical thought. There are plenty of architectural origins that ply the tourist trade of cameras and postcards and have done so for generations. The secret is not to surprise anyone but to surprise ourselves at the indignation we cause by being an elite profession. Someone requires a return.
