Just arrived for #gibsunday , an extremely rare 1931 Recording King Model 807 (Nick Lucas Style) Flat Top Acoustic Guitar made by Gibson in Kalamazoo Michigan! (Link in profile). - It was late 1930, the economy was collapsing everywhere. Gibson had parts and tooling set up to build their new improved large-body Nick Lucas Special, priced at $125. This very expensive deluxe flat top suddenly must have seemed VERY hard to sell as the Depression closed in. One solution? Assemble them with a plain headstock and no truss rod, spray them plain black and send them to Montgomery Ward to sell via mail-order catalog. I’m gonna come off like such a giant guitar nerd here, so enjoy. Lol So, while I LOVED “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”, this historical inaccuracy just really annoyed me. The movie starts off with Tim Nelson playing a Recording King Dirty Thirties parlor guitar. This is a modern guitar that takes its shape from the original Montgomery Ward mail order guitars in the first half of the century. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this movie was based somewhere in the late 1800’s. Recording King wasn’t even a thing until the 1930’s. I know it’s silly, but I couldn’t stop starring at the headstock and thinking. “Did they do this on purpose? Why didn’t they sand off the headstock? Did recording king sponsor them? Why not use a Martin or Gibson?” And then I remembered that Kurt Russel destroyed that 100+ year old Martin Guitar during the shooting of “The Hateful 8” and that they probably just found it easier to go to a guitar center and buy a modern guitar based on a classic looking L1. Regardless, it’s just a funny thing I noticed that I doubt many others ever would.
