“I’m fine!” she insisted. “You didn’t need to do that.”
Blake’s gold eyes narrowed. “If I didn’t, you would sneak off to the office and try to get work done. So yes, Yang, I did, because if you don’t rest, you won’t get better.”
“But I’m fine!”
“You have a fever, you are definitely not fine.”
“It’s a low grade fever!”
“Just accept that you’re sick, and if you rest now, you’ll get better faster!”
Yang’s shoulders slumped, and she rolled her head around her shoulders as she stomped her foot. “Blake!”
“Yang!”
Yang sent her a glare. “Don’t mock me,” she said.
“Me? Mock you? Never.” Blake’s smirk made Yang roll her eyes, but Blake continued. “Seriously, Yang. You need sleep. You need to rest.”
“I’m fine!” she insisted. She bent back down to finish lacing up her shoes, but she nearly collapsed. With a sigh, she slipped off her shoes and straightened back up. She glared at Blake as she walked past Blake and went back into the bedroom. She stripped off her clothes, and she would never admit it, but it felt good to get out of her work clothes and back into a clean pair of pajamas. She pulled her hair up into a ponytail and got back into bed.
Blake came in a few minutes later with a tray heaped with bacon and eggs and toast and tea. Her wife smiled at her and laid the tray on the bed before sitting down beside Yang. There were two plates and two mugs, and Yang sat up and helped herself to a piece of toast spread with jam. “Thank you,” she said through a mouthful of bread.
Blake cringed, but she nodded as she took a sip of her tea. “You’re welcome.” Blake smiled at her and brought one knee up to her chest and stretched out her other leg. “Isn’t this better than going to work? Just the two of us, me taking care of you, relaxing for once in our lives.” Blake scooted closer to her and smiled, her ears relaxed flat against her head.
“We both know we’d rather be doing something than lounging about,” Yang pointed out.
“Still, we should both try to relax. You need rest, and I want to take care of you.” Blake bopped her nose, and Yang smiled. “So what do you want to do today? Watch reality TV? Sleep? Read?” Blake wiggled her eyebrows. “I can read you a romance novel again if you want.”
Yang laughed and shoveled a bite of eggs into her mouth. “A movie sounds nice,” she said, settling back down against the pillows. “But maybe later? I kind of want to sleep a bit before I stare at a screen for a few hours.”
Blake nodded. “I’ll let you rest, then,” she said, kissing Yang’s forehead before clearing the breakfast tray away. Yang snuggled deeper into the covers as Blake left. She waited until she could hear Blake washing dishes in the kitchen before she jumped out of bed and grabbed her laptop. Just because she couldn’t get to work that didn’t mean she could work.
She sat back down in bed and leaned against her pillows, eyes squinting against the brightness of the screen. Yang typed in her password and opened her browser before trying to get to her work email. But there was no internet. She bit her tongue and closed her laptop once more before padding out to the kitchen where Blake was humming and washing dishes.
“Blake?” she asked.
Blake didn’t turn around as she said, “You tried to go work on your laptop, didn’t you?”
“Why is the internet down?”
“Because I turned the WiFi off.”
“Are you serious?”
“Serious about you getting rest, yes.”
Yang resisted the urge to stomp her foot and cross her arms. “You’re impossible,” she said with a sniffle. “I was in bed! I was resting!”
“You need to actually rest,” Blake said patiently. Blake turned around then, drying her hands on a towel. “So, you can sleep, or we can watch a movie, or whatever else you want. Just no work, and all rest.”
“You’re impossible,” she groaned. Her head felt like it was packed with cotton, and she had to close her eyes briefly to steady herself. “I have things I need to be doing! And I’m fine!”
“You need rest if you want to get better,” Blake said patiently. “And you are the worst at being sick, you know that?”
“How can I be bad at being sick?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Most people, when they’re sick, allow themselves to rest! You need to get better, and you won’t get better if you don’t take care of yourself.” Blake’s brow furrowed, and her wife sighed at her. “What do I have to do to get that through your thick head?”
Yang faltered slightly, rolling her eyes. “Fine,” she said, her shoulders slumping. “Can we watch a movie?”
Blake nodded, the tension easing from her body. “We can definitely watch a movie,” Blake said with a small smile. “Go back to bed, and I’ll be in with another cup of tea in a few minutes. Get comfy, and pick out a movie to watch.”
“Any requests?” she asked.
“You pick, baby.” Blake crossed the distance between them and kissed Yang’s temple once more. “Go back to bed. Get comfortable, and save me a spot. Don’t start the movie without me, okay?”
“Okay,” she said. Yang turned and went back to their room. She put her laptop back in its place before curling back under the covers. She propped herself up with the pillows so that she was still partially reclined. The pillows and mattress carefully cradled her body. Yang felt like she was swaddled up in a cloud and pleasantly warm. She flipped the TV on and started scanning through the movies to order.
She settled on a trashy rom-com that Weiss had recommended. It was a guilty pleasure for all of them, and there was nothing better than trash-talking the stilted dialogue while still getting swept up in the story and the romance. They had found some real gems in their search for the worst of the worst, but it was relaxing. It was fun.
Blake came in a few minutes later holding two steaming mugs. She placed Yang’s mug on her nightstand before placing her own on her nightstand and crawling into bed beside Yang. Yang laid her head on Blake’s shoulder. “How does this sound?” Yang asked, gesturing towards the screen.
“Perfect.” Blake leaned her head on top of Yang’s before reaching for her hand and squeezing. “You ready?”
“I’m ready.” She curled closer into Blake’s body, her heart in her throat. “Thanks, Blake.” She started playing with the ends of her hair.
Blake snorted. “For what?”
“For taking care of me. I know it’s not easy.”
Blake kissed her cheek. “It’s easier than you think,” she said. “I know you too well.”
“Oh yeah?” She raised a brow.
“Oh yeah.” Blake let out a small laugh. “You may deny it, baby, but you like this. You like me taking care of you. And I like taking care of you.”
“We take care of each other,” she countered.
“Yes, but it’s my turn right now. You need and deserve rest. You’ve been working so hard.” Another kiss, this time on her temple. “And that’s why I’m being hard about this. You can’t keep running on a quarter full tank of gas, baby. You need to recharge occasionally, you know.”
