Earlier this evening, at around 7 PM CT U.S., Rebekah Jones (notably one of DeSantis’ biggest political enemies right now) underwent a raid on her home by state police.

Guns were pointed in the face of her 13-year old son, Jack. They arrested him under the charges of digital terrorism and “on state orders.”

They are refusing to let him go home and they are refusing to let Jones see him.

These are her screenshots recounting the incident from earlier tonight. They were taken at 10:23 PM CT U.S.

If i see that damn Rebekah Jones post about her framing her kid being arrested for threatening and planning to shoot up his school as DeSantis kidnapping him, imma straight up block you.

I have had not one, but several of these things happen where i live.

One was at the school my brother goes to and the fucking kid got away with it because his parents knew the 'right' people.

And in all four of them, the State had to get involved because the school and the local police had been threatened or bought off by the kids parents so as not to affect their academic careers or their reputations.

Parents like her will use their platform and privilege to ensure their kid never faces real consequences and save face because in the end their reputation matters more than the lives of the kids he planned to stab and shoot for fun.

Tumblr has no misinformation option to report, and frankly, I am surprised to see so many of my mutuals fall for a White Woman's Tears, I thought y'all had the common sense to even look at the notes before reblogging.

I’m talking about all of this today for a few reasons: first, obviously I talk a lot about liars and the spread of misinformation, and I find that stuff interesting. But more importantly, I think it is absolutely critical that we call out the people on “our side” who are in the wrong. I think Ron DeSantis is a disgusting fascist who absolutely must be run out of office on a rail, and compared to him, Rebekah Jones is a small time grifter. But she’s OUR small-time grifter. The more famous she gets, and the more she continues to lie or misrepresent or distort reality, the more people on the sidelines will assume that that’s what ALL of Ron DeSantis’s opponents are doing. If progressives are to have any moral standing against the far-right, we MUST keep our own house clean. And it can’t be clean with Rebekah Jones in it.

A lot of people, including me, uncritically reported or reposted her story about her son being 'kidnapped'. Rebecca Watson summarises Jones's history before addressing this latest 'scandal':

Rebekah Jones was a website developer who worked for the Florida Department of Health in 2020 managing their COVID dashboard. In April of 2020, her coworkers reported that she was releasing private personnel data as well as infographics to the public that were altered from the department’s own data. When they asked her to stop doing that, she crashed the dashboard by moving a bunch of data into her own personal account, making herself the sole administrator, and locking coworkers out. A manager was able to get admin access back and get the dashboard back up and running, and the Department tried to work things out with her without firing her but a few days later she messaged her coworkers claiming she was removed from the Dashboard because she refused to manipulate data, at which point she was fired. Then she went to the press, claiming to be a scientist who was silenced for refusing to alter COVID data to make Florida look better, and everyone, including myself, believed her. She raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for her legal defense and became a popular, well-regarded opponent of the far-right DeSantis government.

Because her case became a liberal cause celebre, it took awhile for people like me to notice the far-right reporters who were accurately pointing out that she was lying. But when I finally looked at their evidence, I found it was solid, and that was before I learned that she had a long history of shady behavior, like criminal charges for battery and stalking, the latter of which was related to her having sex with one of her students when she was a professor at Florida State University, after she allegedly publicly published nude photos of him and threatened to fail his roommate as revenge for trouble in their relationship.

So, please read this article before reposting anything Rebekah Jones 'reports' because she's shady AF

An ousted Florida data scientist who said she was fired for refusing to manipulate COVID-19 numbers and emerged as a critic of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis over his handling of the pandemic won her U.S. House primary race and will challenge Rep. Matt Gaetz, one of former President Donald Trump's staunchest supporters, for a seat in Congress.

Rebekah Jones won Tuesday's Democratic primary in northwestern Florida’s first congressional district, setting up a chance to unseat the incumbent Gaetz, who has represented the district since 2017.

Jones was vaulted into the public eye during the early stages of the pandemic after she was fired from her position at the Florida Department of Public Health.

The Democratic nominee said she was fired for speaking out about what she said was the state's manipulation of COVID-19 data, while state officials said she was fired for insubordination.
