VeggieTales
Lately I’ve been watching VeggieTales, both ones I had seen as a kid (King George and the Ducky, The Toy That Saved Christmas, and Larry Boy and the Fib from Outer Space; I also had the PC game, Veggie Tales: The Mystery of Veggie Island) Mostly because Saberspark posted his long-awaited video on VeggieTales, including how it started and fell apart. I’ve been searching for and watching the ones I find interesting on YouTube (sucks that most of them are marked “Kid Friendly”, thus disabling the comments; I like to see people discussing the episodes)
The most recent one I finished was “Esther... the Girl Who Became Queen”. Her [Esther’s] character design is interesting, from her whited and irised eyes (which apparently became the norm when VeggieTales went to Netflix; I’ve seen the pics and... not a fan -_-) to her hair, which apparently was such a nightmare to animate, they never used her again. But with VeggieTales apparently being made again, with some of the original people behind it, and being closer to its original forms, I wonder if she’d be used again, since CGI tech has come so far and made things easier.
But what I wanted to talk about was how adorable the “movie” was (can you call them movies? They’re half-an-hour, as the theme song explains, but this was more of a special) Mostly coming from the king, Xerxes, played by Mr. Nezzer. I’m actually gonna talk about him for a minute. I was pretty much today years old, give or take a few days, when I found out he was not a pickle, as kid!me thought he was, but was actually a zucchini. Beyond that though, from what I’ve seen of VeggieTales as a kid, he usually played a bad guy (Toy That Saved X-Mas, and Veggie Isle) This was one of the first episodes I say (after Lord of the Beans) where he was a good guy.
Speaking of, I don’t know if enough people talk about how charming and adorable his character, King Xerxes was :3 Heck, from the beginning when Haman kicked out the queen, instead of Xerxes advocating for her banishment, thus making it seem like he ordered it, he instead asked if that wasn’t too harsh. This pretty much tells us this was Haman’s idea. Heck, Haman seemed to be pulling the strings (I won’t try to go movie-analyst on this, I promise XD)
In any case, even though the episode didn’t have much romance, if any at all (the only mention of Esther and Xerxes being married was the “head chef” mentioning that every newly-wed needed a cake) you could tell he was smitten with Esther after hearing her sing. And after she had warned him about the trap. And when he was sitting on his throne, wondering if she would like him; wondering if, were he a guy who cleaned after the camels, or a lawyer (XD) if she would like him. It was just so cute! X3 Not to mention SPOILER ALERT! how angry he was when it was revealed Haman tricked him into signing a law that would send Esther and her family to the Island of Perpetual Tickling (this show sometimes XD) I know him calling her “his queen” was basically on the tin, it being her title, but I could see him calling her that as a pet name.
Like I said, the episode doesn’t make a big deal out of them being in a romantic relationship, outside of the comment about him being a newly-wed (not to mention she becomes his queen) but the substance is still absolutely adorable. I think it also helps that Mr. Nezzer, as a whole, is a big guy with an Oogie Boogie-esque voice (NEVER put that together until I saw someone point it out; have I mentioned I can be kinda dense at times? XD) which makes him quite endearing when he’s not being a jerk. I’ll bet if the episode was made into a movie, or at least a longer special, it would have focused more on their relationship, even if it was portrayed as a friendship (I don’t see VeggieTales focusing on romance; they’re not super overtly-Christian, but regardless)
Anyway, I just wanted to talk about that because I don’t see a lot of people talking about that aspect of the movie; mostly just Esther (which isn’t a bad thing; like I mentioned, her design is quite interesting) and the story as a whole. I just found it really cute myself.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Ninety-Five: Out to Dinner ]

Well...today’s the day.
And he has...no idea what he’s supposed to do.
They arrange to meet in the early afternoon, Hinata promising her father she’d use the morning to tend to some of her homework before taking the rest of the day off. Hiashi agreed, and so Sasuke arrives at her house at about two in the afternoon. And even after several hours to sit and think about it, he still has little to go on in regards to what a date is really...supposed to be. A few minutes are spent sat in the car, nibbling his lip in thought.
...now or never.
Getting out of the driver’s side, he gives the house a once-over. It’s a two story white craftsman, on a large corner lot with a sizeable, well-kept yard. All it needs is a picket fence and you’d see it in one of those magazines housewives are always drooling over. He’d know: Mikoto always has one lying around someplace, dreaming of remodeling their house.
Walking up the path to the front door, he gives the bell a ring. He texted Hinata five minutes before he arrived, but...well, he’s expecting someone else to answer the door.
And it turns out, he’s right.
Hiashi is who pulls it open, beholding Sasuke properly for the first time. Sasuke, in turn, does his best to stand in some manner that doesn’t look forced, but not too relaxed, either.
“...sir.”
“You must be Sasuke,” the Hyūga muses.
“Yes, sir.”
“...you needn’t call me sir. Mister Hyūga is polite enough.”
“Er...right. Is, uh...is Hinata ready…?”
“I believe she is finishing up. You may come in to wait, if you wish.”
“...thanks.” Stepping in to a tiled entryway, Sasuke just sort of...lingers, not daring to get his shoes on any carpet. The interior, like the exterior, is mostly white: everything is greyscale, light and airy. It’s...probably the nicest house he’s ever been in. His own is nothing to sneeze at, but...wow. This place is nice.
Hands in his pockets, he watches as Hiashi retreats out of sight. Well...so much for making small talk. But maybe he’s glad for it, honestly. They haven’t exactly gotten off to a good start…hopefully Hinata won’t take too much longer.
But before she comes downstairs, another person walks past: her little sister, Hanabi, who Sasuke has heard...very little about. Looking very much like her father with the same face shape and hair shade, she pauses as she catches sight of him.
...there’s an awkward moment of staring.
“...you Hinata’s boyfriend?” she asks, speaking past a stick of pocky in her mouth.
“Uh...yeah. That’s me.”
“...you’re hotter than I thought you’d be.”
As Sasuke balks, she breaks into a laugh, waving a hand and continuing on through the house.
...what was that?!
It’s then Hinata comes down the stairs, slowing to a stop as she catches his expression. “...are you okay?”
“...yeah. Just...met your sister.”
Understanding seems to brighten her face. “Oh...that explains it. She say anything...weird?”
“...she thinks I’m hot.”
She can’t stop a snort. “Yeah, that’s...Hanabi for you. She’s in that weird eighth grader stage.”
From another room, the younger sister calls, “I HEARD THAT!”
Hinata just rolls her eyes. “Ready to go?”
“I think so.”
“Okay...let me go say goodbye to my dad, then we can head out!”
“No need.”
Hiashi then rounds the corner, Hinata looking a bit surprised. “Oh! Well...Dad, this is Sasuke, Sasuke...this is my dad, Hiashi.”
“We had a...brief introduction when he arrived,” the patriarch assures her. “So, I suppose this is where I set the boundaries? Home by ten, and do call if you have any major changes in plans. Which...would be?”
“Uh...thought we’d go hang out at the mall, maybe catch a movie and some dinner…?” Sasuke shrugs.
Amusement flickers Hiashi’s lips for just a moment. “Agreeable. Do be careful, Hinata.”
“I will. See you when I get back.”
The teens then make their way back outside and into Mikoto’s SUV. As Sasuke does up his seatbelt, he mumbles, “...that was the most awkward introduction I’ve ever had in my life.”
Hinata can’t help a giggle. “I’m sorry...m-my dad’s really...stiff. He’s too serious, but...he tries.”
“He didn’t hate me?”
“If he hated you, we wouldn’t be in the car right now.”
“...okay then. So, uh...mall sound good to you? I...really have no idea what else to do. It’s where I go to bum around with Naruto most of the time.”
“Sure! In all honesty...I don’t even know what movies are playing right now…”
“Then we’ll both be surprised.” Backing from the driveway, Sasuke steers the car toward downtown, the mall soon looming before them. Once parked in the garage, they head up into the building proper. “Got any favorite places to browse?”
“A few, but...they’re mostly for clothes. I don’t want to b-bore you.”
“I don’t mind.”
“Um...there’s also a neat bookstore, with board games and stuff?”
“I think I know that one...should we start there?”
“Sure!”
They mosey, taking their time and window shopping on the way. Sasuke very rarely goes in most of the shops in the mall, preferring to just walk around and people watch, maybe peruse things in the displays. His allowance pays okay, but he prefers to save and splurge on stuff for his PC or games for his Playstation.
The bookstore is pretty busy, filled mostly with younger kids. But that doesn’t stop Hinata from looking over their puzzles and books, Sasuke observing a model train do its laps alongside a few tykes.
Without him looking, Hinata takes a small video of it, smiling behind her phone.
In the end she buys a few new books, Sasuke finding an old school PC game he used to play in elementary school to splurge on. Sheepishly explaining the educational title to her, he glances over as she giggles.
“I remember that one! It was on the computers in the library!”
“Yeah! I didn’t think you could find it anymore...maybe it won’t even play on my computer, but it was only ten bucks...might as well try.”
“Mhm!”
From there, they go to the in-mall cinema, picking a movie at random based on the posters. It’s a comedy, the pair sharing some overpriced candy and popcorn. Sasuke quickly grows a bit bored, but gets a kick out of Hinata paying rapt attention and laughing every few seconds.
...she’s so cute.
After that, they wander a little longer, Hinata dragging him into a rather...eclectic place with weird clothes, crystals, incense, and fancy glass sculptures.
“Oh, wow...look at that one!” Hinata points to a lion posed atop a rock. “It’s so pretty…!”
“You like lions?”
“I was...a big Lion King fan as a kid.”
“Yeah?”
“Mhm!” She gives him a glance. “What about you?”
“Me?”
“Everyone has the Disney movie from when they were a kid. What was yours?”
“Actually, it was uh...The Black Cauldron.”
“Really?! That one was so scary!”
“Yeah, that’s why I liked it! No one else really seemed to, though...my brother was all about Hercules.”
“Aww, I love that one…”
“...you gonna buy that, then?”
“Oh gosh, no...it’s way too expensive.”
“...what if I go in half?”
“Sasuke, no!”
“You want it, don’t you?”
“W-well, yeah! But -?”
“I’ll pay half.”
Torn between stubborn refusal and longing, she bites her lip before giving in. “...oh, okay! But I owe you.”
“Whatever you say.”
Once the fragile artwork is carefully wrapped and put in a box, the pair make their way to the few restaurants on the main floor. “What sounds good?”
“Anything, really...that popcorn didn’t fill me up at all!”
They head into a grill, ordering and chatting as they wait.
“Are you nervous about state?”
“...yeah, kinda. Mostly I’m just psyched we’re going, but...now that we’re going? I wanna go all the way.”
“I bet you will.”
“I dunno...there’s a lot of good teams. But we’ll sure try.”
“I’ll be there to cheer you on, okay? Sakura said she’d go with me, since she and Naruto finally g-got together.”
Sasuke pauses for a moment. “...that doesn’t bother you?”
“...should it?”
“You liked him for a long time.”
“...well, I’m not what he wanted. And that’s okay.” She gives him a shy smile. “...and you liked me for a long time, so...m-maybe it’s only fair.”
“Is that why you asked me out?”
“No! Well...maybe partially. But also because I like you, and...I w-want to give this a try.” After a small hesitation, she puts a hand atop his own on the table, earning a small blush.
“...o-okay.”
After going out for dinner (and Hinata indulging in dessert, which Sasuke skips with his lack of a sweet tooth), they wander a little longer to let their meals settle. Then back to the car they head, both clearly disappointed the evening is almost over.
“...well, did you have fun?” he asks, maneuvering out of the garage.
“I did...a lot, actually. And thank you again for the lion...I am going to pay you back for that!”
“You can try,” he teases.
Pulling along the curb at her house, Sasuke walks her up to the door, hands in his pockets as she carries her few bags from her shopping.
“...thank you for taking me,” she eventually offers as they idle.
“Yeah, well...thanks for asking me,” Sasuke counters with a hint of a grin. “...it was really nice.”
“Would you...w-want to do it again sometime? Well...maybe something different, I mean, but another...d-date?”
“...I think I would. We’ll, uh...plan a bit more next time.”
Hinata giggles. “...okay.”
...another silence blooms.
“...well...I better get inside…”
“Yeah, I gotta get home, too.”
“Text me when you get home, so...I know you made it okay?”
“Sure.”
After another pause, Hinata hesitates for a moment before swooping forward atop the step. Lips give a press to Sasuke’s cheek, which quickly blooms red. “...goodnight.”
“...night,” he manages to reply, watching her head in. Blinking a few times, he then dares to grin, walking on air to the car.
...maybe this whole date thing isn’t so bad.

I’ve been replaying the original Mass Effect trilogy, it was available for dirt cheap because of an offer on cdkeys and discussion of Andromeda got me feeling nostalgic for ME 1 and 2, and I never actually played 3. Figured now might be the time, if only just to see for myself whether it warranted the disappointment and outrage surrounding it when it launched.
I just finished ME 1 again last night and moved on to ME 2. I never got any of the DLC for 2 when I played for the first time on xbox, except the ones they gave away for free with new copies of the game, so I was interested in trying out some of the juicy story content I’d never seen. Long story short, Bioware are all but running a scam.
Instead of just buying the content directly from the Steam or Origin storefront, you have to register an account with Bioware’s website, and then you buy “Bioware points” that you can then exchange for the content you want. It’s a pain in the ass compared to any sane and normal system, and archaic too. On Origin you can buy packs of either 1600 or 800 points for £16 or £8 respectively.
Now, I added up the point cost for the DLCs I wanted. There’s Kasumi’s Stolen Memory, which adds a new squad character and a mission associated with her - 560 points. That number should be triggering alarm bells already if your arithmetic is on point. Then there’s Overlord, a side story that was well praised for its plotline. Another 560 points. Then there’s Lair of the Shadow Broker, which is widely regarded as the best DLC for this game and a must-have piece of story content. 800 points. Finally, there’s Arrival, which is a shortish mission that ties the plot of ME2 to the very opening of ME3 - this mission sets up the very beginning of ME3 and ME3 makes direct reference to its events, so it’s not really optional if you want the best version of the ME plotline. 560 points.
That’s 560 (x3) + 800 which equals 2480. That’s 24 pounds and 80 pence. For DLC content for a game that released in 2011 on last-gen consoles, in the year of our lord 2017. That’s a scandalous price to pay. But that’s not all you’re paying. You can only get packs of 800 and 1600, remember? So, at the bare minimum you have to buy 1600 + 800 + 800 (or 1600 x2) to surpass the minimum number of points you needm so the actual price is £32. You’re forced to pay money for points you don’t need. Sure, there are some piddly item and weapon packs you could spend your extra points on, but the point remains that you’re basically being forced to spend money on stuff you probably didn’t really want or wouldn’t have looked sideways at otherwise. Of course, you could also probably keep your points for ME3′s DLC, which is even more ridiculous, to get all the important story content for that you have to pay 4000 points total. Most of it basically isn’t really optional either, stuff like From Ashes or Leviathan is so vital to the overarching plot that you’re not really getting the proper experience if you don’t get it. Even if you carry over all of your excess 720 points over, once again you’re left with this infuriating situation where if you buy two 1600 Bioware funbucks(tm) packs, you’re left short of what you need by 80 points. That means you have to buy an extra 800 point pack. That leaves you back in the same position of having 720 points left over that you didn’t want, unless you’re one of the six people who actually cares about all the pointless knickknack weapon and armour DLCs available. All in all, to get all eight of the major DLCs released for ME 2 and 3, I’d have to pay for four 1600 packs and a single 800 pack. That’s £40. For reference, the trilogy bundle of all three base games is £29.99.
There was never any GOTY edition of ME 2 or 3 that came bundled with all the DLC (though mercifully the PC version of Mass Effect 1 comes with both of the DLCs released,) and none of these DLCs have gone down in price by even a single Bioware point since they were released. The points themselves have likewise never decreased in price by a penny. The last time they were on sale was in 2011. Note that I’m not even touching on the nickle and dime randomised loot crate crap in ME3 multiplayer. I’m not sure if it’s EA either, they have more sensible DLC models for their other franchises. I’m pretty sure this is all Bioware. Maybe they’re just too incompetent to change their archaic system, or just too lazy or greedy to drop the prices of each DLC to a reasonable level. Either way it’s a pretty damning indictment of their company ethos. That’s why seeing Bioware defense force still playing the same old song and dance with Andromeda in 2017 is so frustrating. They’ve become a company that’s either too incompetent or apathetic to defend, only now that also extends to the actual games they release rather than just aspects surrounding them.

For many years I have looked at the tank of the month as something to take inspiration from and to aspire to. So I was particularly honored and excited when I was informed my aquarium would be featured as tank of the month for April. The timing was a bit disconcerting, but if you’re reading this now, it’s not just some sick April fool’s joke designed to mess with an aquarium junkie!
My Aquarium Journey
I have had an aquarium in my home for as long as I can remember. My first tank, a stainless steel framed slate bottom 20 gallon aquarium, was set-up prior to my ability to remember. Around the age of 11, my mother and I were shopping for some bird and fish supplies at the local pet shop. That shop had recently added a salt water section, and I was absolutely transfixed by the dazzling colors and amazing variety of fish. I was instantly hooked, and soon talked my mother into helping me buy a new aquarium.
My first saltwater aquarium… 30 gallons of pure joy and anguish all in one! Under gravel filter: check. Non-submersible heater: check. Random bleached and dead coral decorations: check. Condylactus anemones, “live rock” full of sponges, an “Assorted Butterfly” and a powder brown tang for my first non-damselfish: you bet! As you may be guessing, that didn’t end so well. I was heartbroken to fail so miserably, but I was more driven than ever. Driven by my failure, over the next five years I read every aquarium book and publication available, every marine biology text book in existence., I studied fish nutrition and developed my own frozen fish food line, expanded my aquarium collection to over 10 marine aquariums, bred dozens of species of clownfish and Tanganyika and Malawi cichlids, and managed the marine section at the best fish store in the area. Did I mention I was hooked?
In the 25 years or so that have followed, some of that intensity I had for the hobby had to take a backseat to school, girls, partying, getting married, having children, buying a house, and all the things we all do as we grow up and try to become responsible members of society. However, no matter what my situation, I’ve always been a part of this hobby and have done what I can to gain a greater understanding of these wonderful creatures we keep. The tank you’re about to see and read more about is the result of my journey through this hobby.

Current System
My main display sits on a half finished, yet sturdy, homemade stand in my ugly old basement. Three tanks, a 45 gallon frag tank, 45 cube anemone tank, and the 156 gallon display all flow into a central sump. Hopefully my next home will have a much larger tank on display in a living area, but for now the ability to be messy and worry only about the function of the aquarium has it perks.
The display, as the rock sits now, is about three years old. But, this tank was set-up back in 2010 as a transfer from an overgrown 65 gallon reef I started 10 years ago. Many of the current corals have been grown from frags of colonies I grew in that 65. A little over three years ago my tank had gone into some disrepair because I was traveling extensively for work, and thanks to some zoanthids that wanted to take over my tank. I decided to rededicate myself and turn things around by redoing roughly half the rockwork, fragging many dying corals, and doing a couple large water changes.
Philosophy
A big skimmer, quality light, a lot of flow, and a decent stock level of fish that are fed heavily, are my basic keys to success. When I had my fish food company I learned early on that feeding heavily was in the best interest of my inhabitants. I feel tanks will adapt and adjust over time to extra food coming in. Sometimes grazers are a big help here. With a good and oversized protein skimmer, you can feed heavy and still be successful. Whether or not phosphate will need to be controlled via other means will depend on the system, but don’t let phosphate addition keep you from feeding your inhabitants regularly.

Maintenance
I do water changes when I feel like it, but try to do a 50 gallon change on my roughly 250 gallon system every two to four weeks. I’ll also throw in a 100 gallon change every year or so. I fill the calcium reactor when the media is low, I fill the CO2 when I see the pressure drop on my tank, and I clean the glass when I’m feeling motivated and see it’s dirty. GAC is run for a few days when I notice the water is has a slight yellow tinge when looking through the side glass the length of the tank. RO/DI filters are changed whenever I’ve exhausted two full DI resins.
The biggest maintenance has become figuring out what to clip, prune, move, or even remove as corals grow into large colonies. It’s a good problem to have, but is proving at times far more difficult than maintaining a younger aquarium.
As far as maintaining parameters, there’s a fairly wide acceptable range for me. I purposely encourage the temperature in my tank to fluctuate throughout the day. Less than 75 and I throw another heater in the sump. On the high side I don’t really get concerned in summer until beyond 85, though having the tank in the basement prevents that from being much of a concern. I try to maintain my dKH around 7, but I don’t fret too much if it gets a little higher or lower. 6-8 dKH is my preferred range. Calcium, as long as it’s over 400, I’m happy, and I’ve never seen much difference between 400 and 550. I test alkalinity (API) several times a week, calcium (API) every month or two, magnesium (Salifert) a few times a year, and nitrate (Red Sea) and phosphate (Hanna) when I feel like it.
Supplements
I’ve dabbled with just about every supplement and form of dosing imaginable. However, for most of the last 10 years I’ve done little else besides maintain calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium.
For the last year and a half I’ve been experimenting with dosing potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate to keep nitrates detectable, so nitrate has been tested more frequently of late. I no longer have to use GFO to keep phosphates low. As a result I have to feed heavier and be cautious about skipping feedings or else corals will lighten in color and show signs of stress. I can’t attribute this shift in naturally low phosphates to much else other than the Redfield ratio and my dosing of a nitrate source, but that’s based on speculation and anecdotal evidence. I could probably solve the issues with my phosphates and nitrates being too low by downsizing my skimmer, but finding that perfect size is a difficult task.
One thing I am very confident of from all my years of “experimenting”… When It comes to supplements, simply maintaining the big three elements is all that’s needed to have a great aquarium.
Stability and Breaking from the Norms
Stability is something I feel is often hyped too much within the hobby. I have encouraged fluctuations in temperature for many years on my tanks. I won’t hesitate to boost my magnesium by a few hundred PPM or calcium by 100 ppm in one shot if they’re getting low. If my alkalinity jumps by 1-2 dKH from a water change I’m not worried. Though I would prefer to keep these stable, I don’t see much detriment to small dips and spikes. I have seen issues from dKH rising above 9 dKH in my lower nutrient tank, so I do whatever I can to avoid this. Stability certainly isn’t a bad thing to shoot for, but I feel stability within a range should be the focus. Having stable parameters that are outside desirable ranges is where the problem really lies, not with small fluctuations.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Casts Phoenix Down On A Classic
If you’ve heard an uptick of excitement in your area, chances are your local Final Fantasy VIII fan is beaming with the release of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. In the twenty years since its initial release, Final Fantasy VIII has been built up with this controversial mystique compared to the other two games in the series Square put out on the PlayStation. It was also a game that had seemingly gone missing outside of a PC release in 2000 and being emulated on the PlayStation 3. People were concerned a remaster of the game would never come out for various reasons after Final Fantasy VII and IX showed up elsewhere, but it’s finally here.
Since this is a remaster and not a full on remake, what has Square Enix done to the game to make it seem prettier than it had in 1999? Do the new enhancements add to the game and attempt to tackle why this game was so controversial? Is this the package that Final Fantasy VIII fans would want or people new to the game would find enjoyable? One thing is for sure though, Squall, you’re finally the best looking guy in the room.
The biggest thing you’re going to notice compared to the original release is the updated character models that have been added to Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. Everyone got an overhaul, so you’re actually able to see their faces and not have them look like a blob of pixels. This is most noticeable in the main characters, but everyone you will come across on the course of your adventure will also look better as well, minus that time Cid melts into the background and becomes just pixels early in the game. If someone had played the game in 1999 and never saw the game again until now, they’d probably think this is how they remember the game looking. It still does adhere to the idea that it is a PlayStation game as the faces don’t animate outside of blinking. That means it can look a bit weird when characters are conversing with one another, but their mouths don’t move and they don’t emote.
Given how the original character models looked, this is a very prominent change and one that was needed. However, if you think this was applied to the entire game, you might be disappointed. All of the backgrounds remain untouched as they look like their 1999 counterparts. This leads to the new character models really popping out when contrasted with these older backgrounds. If you’ve played the remasters of Final Fantasy VII and IX, this won’t surprise you as those games also had this issue. It’s a bit strange considering the backgrounds were the better looking aspect compared to the models in 1999, but now they’re the part that looks worse.
The FMVs are also untouched in their standard 4:3 ratio. There tends to be a bit of compression on these videos which is somewhat of a shame that they couldn’t get higher quality versions of them into the game. In the context of 1999 video games though, they’re still pretty impressive with what Square was able to accomplish with them. The moments where the game swiftly transitions from FMV to gameplay may not seem as impressive now, but with that context in mind, it’s still a really cool touch to the game.
For the most part, the game runs fine with all the new enhancements and boosts the game allows you to use. It doesn’t break when you’re running around at X3 speed and it’s as if the game had done this since the initial release. There was one brief spot in the Missile Base where the framerate got really choppy which was strange, especially since it really didn’t happen anywhere else and there wasn’t anything on screen that should have caused that. Looking at footage of the original release doesn’t indicate that this was a problem back then, so it becomes even more strange that it happens in this version.
One minor aspect that Final Fantasy VIII Remastered doesn’t include is anything in the way of bonus material. This is strictly the game you are getting here. It would have been neat to see some behind the scenes material, whether that’s just concept art, a look at how they did some of the remastering, or some old promotional material. Maybe even throw in a remastered version of the old Brave Fencer Musashi or Pizza Hut demo (yes, there was a Pizza Hut demo disc) that was put out before the game’s initial release.
While parts of the remaster might not seem up to par compared to remasters across the rest of video games, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is still a great way to play one of the best Final Fantasy games. Now, before you run off after such a bold proclamation, I mentioned earlier that this game was controversial and has remained that way since 1999. People either love this game or hate it. Most of that seems to come from the fact that Square basically upended what people think of when it comes to JRPGs with Final Fantasy VIII. With the boosts that they’ve added here, I think this might be an opportunity for people to have a better understanding of the battle system and drawing.
As someone who looked at the drawing mechanic of Final Fantasy VIII and immediately thought it was impenetrable my first time through, I can understand why people think that. This remaster doesn’t really add anything to help better teach players why drawing is important—it gives you magic to use or apply to yourself to make your character stronger or literally broken and overpowered. The addition of X3 speed and HP boost allow you to basically sit in a battle and draw to your heart's content. You don’t have to worry about dealing with party management, you can just draw and draw and draw until you have your characters maxed out with various magic.
This can totally be helpful early on if you just can’t wrap your head around the system. If you wanted to have a more traditional experience with the game, you could use this for a few battles and then turn it off once you actually have the hang of why you should draw. Plus, the draw system makes this game the anti-JRPG in a way since grinding really isn’t needed and you can beat the game at a very low level since enemies level with you. Heck, I finished my playthrough of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, and Squall was my highest leveled character at level 28.
There are two questions that need to be answered with regards to this new release of the game. Does this version include enough new aspects to change the minds of folks who didn’t like the game originally? Is this the version of the game that newcomers should play? Let’s address the first question to begin with. While I think Final Fantasy VIII Remastered can help make the draw system easier to understand with its boosts, I don’t think that’s enough for people who didn’t like Final Fantasy VIII to begin with. Outside of the boosts and enhancements, this is still the same game that was released 20 years ago. If you weren’t a fan of it back then or have tried to play it since then and didn’t enjoy it, this probably isn’t enough to change your mind.
Now, if you’re someone who never played the game at all, this is easily the version to pick up. There’s no need to find your PlayStation, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation Vita in storage to play this game, it’s in a much more convenient location on the latest generation of consoles. Plus, you’ll have the version that looks the best and is more beginner friendly than the original release. Everything about this release makes it easier than ever to enjoy a great story, a fantastic soundtrack, and one of Square’s best written protagonists.
Certainly, there could have been more done to make Final Fantasy VIII Remastered a better remaster overall. The backgrounds and FMVs could look better, the lack of bonus material is a shame, and it certainly isn’t going to change the controversial nature of the game as a whole. That being said, it’s still a great way to play Final Fantasy VIII on modern consoles and a good version of the game. It may not be the best remaster, but at the end of the day, Final Fantasy VIII remains a gem of a game and definitely worth playing.
