i genuinely hate going onto the rangersapprentice tag. no shade to anyone but ninety percent of the posts right now are completely empty of any creativity whatsoever. you have people posting the most godawful out-of-character headcanons, writing these looong essays on something that was incredibly obvious in the first place and didn't need an entire post dedicated to it or some mixture of the two. its so annoying. i get younger fans joined this year but some of these read like they were written by middle schoolers, come on.

this fandom used to be full of artists but most of them migrated away since their high effort posts would get the same amount of attention as someone saying some crap like "Headcanon: Halt is a total softie :) He likes pigeons" i dare people to go onto the profiles of well known RA artists and ask their opinions and you will see that i'm right.

what if i was ranger Will and you were a rouge bandit and we got into a fist fight and we accidentally kissed, what then.

Wow anon where did you get the idea for that.... sound very cool... what if you were Ranger Will and I was a rouge bandit that got punched by you and then fell in love with you... wow...

Alright to explain, check out this post where @rangercorpstherapy was kind enough to mention me in a discussion about whether Will could ever remarry/find love again or not. TLDR yes he could and ideally I'd want to see him get a boyfriend.

Now, Flanagan sure as hell isn't writing that boyfriend, so I wrote that boyfriend.

On a vigilante-esque mission where Will is more disconnected from the corps and isn't fully following orders, he steals something important from a bandit camp. While leaving the camp though his luck runs out and he gets spotted. Luckily for him he is Will Treaty so he starts storming his way out with no major casualties, when he is about to escape though one last bandit stands in his way. Noticing the guy's unbalanced and nervous stance Will doesn't even slow down and throws a swift punch which is more than enough to knock the bandit over and makes his escape.

That bandit is Andre. The problem is Andre is very, very gay and has a thing for men stronger than him. That combined with the small glimpse he got of Will's handsome face is enough to leave him breathless. The breathless thing might also be from the punch idk.

Andre isn't in a good position in the bandit camp, he is a newcomer and got placed on guard duty because he was seen as the bottom of the barrel. Even though everyone else had an equal part in being unable to stop Will, Andre knows he will get a lot of shit for it especially so he decides to leave. And where to go better than after Will, who is not only Andre's type but also the strategically best option against the bandits who won't take kindly to him running off.

So, he follows after Will while the track is still hot. If it weren't for Andre immediately going after Will he would never be able to track him down and he still gets lost anyway. But even if it takes him days he manages to not fall too behind and eventually catches up with him. He gets hit, again, because Will can recognize him as one of the bandits. But Andre explains himself and they start travelling together.

I mentioned Will being more disconnected from the Corps on purpose because this sets up his and Andre's dynamic very well. Even though Andre wasn't very valued in his last group, he is a good fighter who can hold his own and he is a useful travelling companion to Will. Not only that, Andre doesn't care about laws and he is more than willing to get his hands dirty. He is a good man at heart but morality wise he is very much gray and while Will himself is doing questionable things, Andre indulges this side of him and allows Will to do some things without feeling as guilty about them.

Meanwhile, Andre has a genuinely good man at his side after years of having to work with scummy people, and he feels respected in their dynamic. He likes falling into the role of "the right hand man" around Will and his crush is just getting stronger and stronger.

At the end of whatever journey they've been on the two have gotten genuinely very close to one another and Will has developed some feelings for Andre in return. Their relationship isn't fully healthy though, Andre looks up to Will a lot and even though he wouldn't admit it Will enjoys feeling worshipped. Not only that, Andre also encourages some of Will's worst traits and Will lets Andre slip into the role of the follower without encouraging him to think for himself. Obviously these are things they slowly work out in the future (without getting rid of all of it because that's just boring lmao)

But the idea of a new relationship is scary to Will because of a lot of reasons so he stays quiet even though he can tell Andre likes him.

I have this small comic idea that explores themes of having a new partner/realizing you're queer with a hint of how being on the aro spectrum looks like and it's genuinely very dear to my heart. I'll finish it one day but I'm showing it so you can get a better idea of why their relationship works.

I'm not planning on doing anything with this story other than finishing the comic above since these are silly little scenarios I enjoy in my head and not that serious. But hey, if you've ever wanted Will to be more morally gray and for him to have a boyfriend, here is my story for that.

Eh fuck it I’ll share some of my omegaverse thoughts so if my dear anons from @rangercorpstherapy or anyone else want to talk about an abo au!

So I think I really want to start with how I feel the dynamics would affect in universe relationships and motivations.

Personally I think that there would be a level of discrimination against omegas in araluen society, I’m specifically stating Araluen because I don’t think it’s fair to determine the rules for every other country, but anyway

Think misogyny, like women not being able to hold titles or land, not being able to have certain jobs, except in this au it’s Omegas who aren’t allowed the same things as alphas and betas are

I think in general alphas are larger and stronger than omegas or betas, more aggressive; they’re the protectors

Omegas are generally smaller, more agile; their strength is in their intelligence

Betas serve as a neutral ground, they’re not more “normal” or “useless” in comparison to alphas or omegas they play a role of filling in the gaps, an ability to mold themselves in what their environment needs

I’m thinking of these descriptions in like an evolutionary biology way not a societal way btw like biologically these are how the dynamics generally present

That being said, omegas are generally seen as needing to be protected and being too weak for certain roles because they are generally smaller, and usually the ones birthing children in comparison to the other dynamics

Now I’ll finally get into how this plays out in RA (I’ll mostly be sticking to main cast characters and book 1 story line so sorry if I leave out your favs-)

Will, Jenny, and Halt are Omegas

Horace, Cassandra, and Gilan are Alphas

Alyss and Pauline are Betas

Growing up, Will has a lot of ambitions for himself

He wants to be a knight like his father (or how he thinks his father was at this point)

Horace bullies him relentlessly because there’s no way an omega can be a knight, it’s not possible, Will’s too small, too weak, he needs to leave soldiering to the alphas

But Will isn’t deterred and come choosing day requests placement in the battle school

Sir Rodney denies him, as does Ulf the master of horses

An Omega training to be a knight? Unheard of!

But Halt offers Will an apprenticeship without hesitation

He’s been watching him for a while and the kid has ideal natural skills

But he’s also an omega

See the Ranger Corps actually prefers omega and beta members

In crowds they’re usually overlooked, they’re unassuming

And most dangerous for an opponent they’re underestimated

This makes them ideal for undercover missions, unseen/unheard movements, espionage, etc

There are exceptions, Gilan for example, is an alpha ranger

The rangers won’t turn someone away because of their dynamic, if they have the skills for the job then they’re in

This is already a long ass post so I think I’ll leave it here but I have a LOT more to say, I will probably do a part two with some thoughts on Horace’s time in battle school, Will meeting Gilan for the first time, and Halt’s relationship with Will and Gilan for sure plus whatever else I feel like adding on!

ok weird question, but like, virginity in these books?? it's the medieval period so it was customary and expected (and scandalous if you don't) to save yourself till marriage but like, Commandant Crowley Meratyn gives off major 'guy who fucks' energy so I supposed that it's just irrelevant??

also Halt and Pauline had sexual tension for 15 fuckin years, and Will and Alyss dated for 7 years, and Gilan and Jenny dated for-- my god they're STILL dating.

the view on virginity and sexuality differs between the Early Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages, it also depends on if the subject is nobility or not.

At the start of the Middle Ages, there wasn't as much sexual freedom as nowadays but there was certainly much less taboo on the topic. People were still connected with their old traditions and ways even though they were introduced to/and or practising Christianity. There wasn't as much of a pearl-clutching 'oh no an ankle' sex fear in the Middle Ages as people think. Yes, clergy swore oaths of celibacy and nobility were expected to stay chaste (although this expectation rested more on women than on men). For noble families, it was important to be absolutely sure that that was your baby because you couldn't just do a DNA test. Kinda important if you want to keep the family in power and make sure the bloodline continues undisputed.

Back to the pearl-clutching, it was not sex people were afraid of. There was no taboo on nudity (partly because one didn't have much privacy back then) and sex was even a source of public entertainment, for example in plays or on fairs. It was more pregnancy that was the issue. Bastards weren't treated very well along with their mothers (many choosing to leave their children in orphanages), noble bastards were dealt better cards, they could inherit and would often be seen as valuable enough that they could be used in marriage pacts. This period of vague sex is ok just be careful came to a very abrupt end because of reformations in the Church. Remember what I said about clergy having to be celibate...yeah let's just say they were not doing that. To the point of having 'wives' and kids, not even sneakily, they lived with them in a house, like a family. This was an issue from average priest to bishop. One of the many reforms was meant to make sure that calibates were calibating and put stricter measurements in place. Nuns were forced to live more secluded (before they took a very active role in the life around the convent), and convents became closed off for outsiders. Through efforts from the Pope, sex became demonized and women were presented as evil seductresses and the root of all evil evil desire. I don't think it was the same reforms but around the same time all bastards were stripped of any claim to inheritance and even if fathers claimed them they could not be legitimized. Making having bastards/being one even more taboo.

But even with all that were the Middle Ages not the most anti sex period in western history. The idea of "having sex before marriage is the end of the world and God will strike you down and dance upon your remains we are scared to hold hands with the opposite sex" came during the 16th century with the rise of STDS and would continue well into the Victorian era.

Back to the question.

It's hard to say when RA takes place, having some more modern technology but still having many characteristics of the High Middle Ages (lack of agricultural reforms, strong feudal system and a lack of cities). I am guessing that when RA took place it was around the same time the reforms were spreading (give or take a few decades maybe).

So to finally answer the question:

Crowley is saving himself for nobody, fucked till his heart gave out that's why he died with a smile on his face. Front-row seats to those sex plays at fairs. Always complaining about the good ol' days when you could get laid without some guy in robes and a hat having an opinion about it. Also, he's gay so it's not like he has to worry about populating Araluen with many handsome redhead babies (although he is a bit disappointed he can't be of service in that aspect of course).

Alyss and Will (all the ward kids for that matter) are sooo bastards to me. Bullied by the other kids you say??? Needing special protection or else they would have no one in the world you say??? People knowing they fornicated in the vineyard would not make their reps worse. Those bitches did NOT care, they fucked around day and night and would just get shotgun married if it was necessary. What is anyone going to do? How dare you and your scary wizard boyfriend part of an elite scary people group whom we are all collectively deeply afraid of have sex!

Halt was heir to the throne and probably had some speeches about how not to waste his royal seed on just anyone, to be careful and was so culture-shocked meeting Crowley and Pauline that he needed 15 years to recover.

Who do we think has the most therapist role in the series? I'm discounting Malcolm for obvious reasons (is a healer), but I'm gonna say that Pauline does quite a bit of therapy on literally every idiotic man in her life.

I wouldn't say Pauline because her job is too important and she doesn't have time for all that. What I do think is that Horace would make an excellent therapist, my guy would maybe even be into a bit of spiritual healing dare I say.

To the latest fandom take:

I strongly disagree with the take "new posts are cringe and low effort". Brother (gender neutral), trust me, you shaming them is so embarrassing. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. You're not held down by chains with your eyes forcefully open to look at those posts. Just scroll past or block accounts you don't like. Instead of being joyful about new people joining in, you chose to be bitter about what they post. We were all at that age. Stop picking on younger teens. Hell, it isn't about age. Every post, as long as it is not harmful, is valid and as long as its author enjoys it and enjoys sharing, don't stomp on it. That way, we'll get less and less posts. So what that people keep posting headcanons or essays that are "obvious" or were here before? Those people weren't here before. Let them DISCOVER the wonderful RA world for themselves and share that excitement. And if those posts don't satisfy? WRITE YOUR OWN. Thank you, cheff.

However, what I want to draw attention to (now speaking to everyone), is the remark about fanartists. I know some that left or stopped actively creating for the reason that they felt not appreciated. It goes deeper than that. In the world built on capitalism and consumerism, amateur artists (who are also human beings who seek assurance and positive encouraging feedback) and who come to fandom to share their free artwork for fun and for interaction that gives them motivation to go on, are not some machines that come automatically giving content. Consuming their art and using it without even interacting, especially in this small fandom, can feel draining and this is not what the fanartists came here to do. If you look at it through their eyes, would you continue to do art if you felt it hasn't found its audience or if the audience felt passive about it? You do not have to like some art work. I get it, we all have our own taste. But if you do not support artists, especially beginning ones, it's really easy to lose the motivation. And you're robbing yourself. Imagine some artist who would have become great and eventually posted the art you like, is not sharing their art because they didn't feel motivated.

In conclusion. OP of the prev fandom take, I definitely do not agree with your opinion on ra tag and posts. I also don't like the tone in which you wrote your whole ask. But, everyone, I do believe there's a tiny thing that's worth giving a thought in the part about fanart.

All I see lately is people complaining there aren't good posts or that fandom is dying. Babes, if you're not gonna interact with things, either posts or art or fics or whatever, of course the activity is gonna die down. But also I do think that on the other hand, people who say stuff like "we don't have content anymore are the ones who purposefully ignore posts of the newer blogs just because it isn't entirely their taste and then say this fandom is desolated wasteland about to be hit by dinosaur killing meteorite. Valid, you don't have to reblog stuff that you don't want to. But then stop complaining about that fact there isn't stuff and either shut up and move on or contribute yourself.

Pessimism and toxicity isn't what this fandom needs and to be real I am tired of these fandom takes that what is actually bringing this fandom down. Complaints and call outs to toxic and harmful behaviour is valid and shouldn't be suppressed and please, everyone don't ever be afraid to do that. But these shaming takes and asks, is like chasing and biting your own tail and then complaining it hurts. I'd really appreciate it if some of you could refrain from shaming people who harmlessly enjoy stuff. Bye.
