I really REALLY hate the trope of a bullying, tone-deaf boss, supervisor, or whomever professionally superior, who, throughout the whole season, goes on saying offensive and toxic shit, while getting from time to time humanized. It pops up in Work in Progress (though to a more nuanced effect) and Shrill, a version of it is present in Hacks, as part of the only redundant plot of this otherwise brilliant series. Otherwise, Special's second season is a pleasant improvement over its strong first season. It's a pity there won't be a third one. While O'Connell and Patel are the series's narrative arch always-great protagonists, both of whom tread the sensitive and nuanced relationship plots, Hecht is a marvel and the hard argument for defending the mere existence of her storyline, which, from the narrative viewpoint, is just redundant.

Written by Talia Bernstein and directed by Pete Chatmon, Ghosts Season 3, Episode 3, “He Sees Dead People,” reunites viewers with Eric (Andrew Leeds) and Bela (Punam Patel) while simultaneously presenting challenges in Isaac and Nigel’s impending nuptials.

Further, one of the most impressive details in the show’s lore is how it continues to evolve Hetty’s character while she begrudgingly helps others. (And ultimately, why it’s a good thing that no matter how much she grows as a character, she’s still around because I would not want to see her get sucked off until the very end.) That said, the episode’s emotional beats continue to rely on Hetty’s past to ensure that characters in the present don’t make the same mistakes, and it all occurs rather hilariously throughout.

INTRODUCING THE ABSTAINER.

CHARACTER INFORMATION. 

The Abstainer grew up in the city and never believed that they would endure small town life. They lived a pretty reckless life, loving to party and indulge in alcohol and drugs. That was until that lifestyle put them in a rather dangerous circle. A circle of vampires. The Abstainer had never believed in things that went bump in the night but one night at a party when they returned home something was different. They had consumed something other then their usual mix of alcohol and adrenaline. The Abstainer drifted into a deep sleep and when they awoke, they were a vampire. The Abstainer couldn’t contain the hunger within them and with no elder vampire to guide them they killed many in the first decade of their immortality. 

When the haze finally wore off and the abstainer had realised what they had done they were horrified. They moved from small town to small town, finding their blood lust easier to control in smaller towns and with fewer people around them. They enjoyed living on secluded farmland with few temptations. That was when the De Foire family found them, offering to help them the best they could. Although not a member of the bloodline, The Abstainer is grateful for company of their own kin for the first time in their long life. This makes them extremely loyal. The Abstainer however finds their lifestyle easiest to maintain when they do not consume any blood and as a result lives off of a diet of animal blood. They have intrigued many older vampires and witches in town due to this ability and have recently been offered a place on the council… they may have even intrigued the grey themselves.
