"Why did you choose BTech? It's not a good career."

I have often heard this from friends, family, and random strangers I meet on trains and buses. Most engineering students may have had this experience at some point.

What makes a child dream of their career? When I was a child, I also dreamed of becoming a driver, a soldier, and a pilot. Because of the heroic and adventurous stories I heard.

Most of the members of my family have been in the construction industry. So I have always heard about that and I'm very familiar with it. But nothing made me want it as a career.

And when I was in 7th, I read the story of Punalur Hanging Bridge and Albert Henry, a courageous engineer.

Punalur is a town in Kollam on the banks of the Kallada River. It's a gateway to the Western Ghats. A bridge at Punalur is a necessity for trade, which later leads to the growth of both Kerala and Tamilnadu, but sadly also to the exploitation of the forests.

The bridge was built to prevent wild animals from entering the human settlements of Punalur, but also to allow the passage of vehicles. They built a hanging bridge that starts shaking when someone enters it, which is supposed to scare the wild animals away. The construction of the bridge was completed in 1877 under the supervision of Albert Henry.

It is said that the people had been reluctant to cross the bridge, so Albert Henry and his family went under the bridge in a boat while six elephants crossed the bridge to gain the people's trust.

Much of the British infrastructure was built to exploit India's natural resources, and there is much criticism of it. But as an individual, Albert Henry is a confident and courageous man who has a deep belief in his work.

Over the years, I have read about many engineers who have won people's hearts.

John Pennicuick, the man who ended the drought by building the Mullaperiyar Dam. And John Roebling, who completed the Brooklyn Bridge with the help of his wife Emily Warren, even after a terrible accident, are some of them.

When I started working as a site engineer, I understood that building something from scratch is not easy. It was blood, sweat, thought, and passion that turned into beautiful spaces. There were days when I had to walk 13 to 20 kilometers, stand for hours in the hot summer, and work until night when it was raining.

I often faced challenges as a girl. It is difficult for people to accept a girl as their superior. I wasn't even listened to. There were days I ended up crying. Sometimes I felt very isolated, But I have to overcome that. There is something in me that conquers fear and drives me towards more challenging things.

If you take that out of the equation, the kind of exposure I got was amazing. I have to deal with all kinds of people - workers, supervisors, seniors. I have learned things that are not taught in any school or college.

Kollam

Kollam, formerly known as Quilon, is a district in the southern part of Kerala, 70 kilometres north of Thiruvananthapuram, the state's capital. One of the few beaches in Kerala with a lifeguard station is Kollam Beach. Since 2005, there have been lifeguards posted at the beach. One of the three beaches in south Kerala having lifeguard outposts as of July 2015 is Kovalam. For the international cashew commerce on the Malabar Coast of the Arabian Sea, Kollam Port is one of the most historic and significant ports. Kollam Port, which was behind Cochin Port in terms of size as of 2010, was Kerala's second-largest port. Before Independence, the Portuguese, Dutch, and English all had a particular fondness for Kollam as a place to live. The Tangasseri Breakwater, which extends roughly 1.1 miles (1.8 km) south-southeast of Tangasseri Point, shields the port from the elements. Kollam Beach is one of the top tourist destinations in Kerala because of its picturesque setting and backwaters.

JATAYU EARTH'S CENTER - The Jatayu Earth Center, commonly referred to as Jatayu Nature Park or Jatayu Rock, is a park and tourist destination in Kerala's Kollam district. 350 metres above the average sea level is where it is located. The largest bird sculpture in the world, which is of the Jatayu, is located in Jatayu Nature Park. The sculpture is tall. Rajiv Anchal created the sculpture. The first public-private tourism development in Kerala under the BOT model was this rock-themed nature park. The park is roughly 46 km (miles) from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, and 38 km (miles) from Kollam, the metropolis. On August 17, 2018, it was finished and made public.

An Inspiring Wake-Up Call

I am grateful for the opportunity to share with you the story of His Excellency, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, the Bishop of Punalur in Kerala, India. Every morning, I receive an inspiring wake-up call from him, and I am always moved by the verses he shares in his message.

Bishop Ponnumuthan was born on August 10, 1956. He joined the St. Vincent's Minor Seminary, TVM in 1972 and was ordained a priest at Utchakada on December 19, 1981. After serving in the St. Vincent's Minor Seminary and different parishes, he was sent to Rome for Higher Studies.

After his doctoral Studies in Rome in 1996, he was sent to be a Faculty Member in St. Joseph Pontifical Seminary, Aluva in 1996. There he served as Animator, Dean of Theology, Vice Reactor and Rector. In 2009 he was appointed as the third Bishop of Punalur.

Through the Wake Up Call ministry, Bishop Ponnumuthan has introduced many people to the rich tradition of the Bible. His messages are always inspiring and uplifting, and they have helped me to start each day with a positive attitude.

I am particularly inspired by Bishop Ponnumuthan's commitment to serving others. He is a true shepherd to his people, and he is always willing to go the extra mile to help those in need. He is also a strong advocate for social justice and peace, and he works tirelessly to make the world a better place.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have Bishop Ponnumuthan as a mentor and friend. He is an inspiration to me, and I am sure that he is an inspiration to many others as well.
