          “  i promise you’ve nothing to fear,  ”    she said with a knowing smile, patting the seat beside her. she did not know much of the girl -- who did, really? she was young and had, to caroline’s knowledge, so far spent the better part of her life rather shielded from society. but as the penvenens and the darcys were generally old acquaintances, caroline was determined to make things easier on the poor young lady. leaning in conspiratorially, she offered georgiana a sardonic look.    “  truth be told, there are a few gentlemen worth avoiding at all costs, but i’ve no doubt a girl as clever as yourself can avoid them with aplomb.  ”
