" there was a tease sparkling in elizabeth's eyes as she met her sister-in-law's gaze in the mirror. tonight was a ball. the first ball, in fact, since she her marriage. the first she was expected to carry off as hostess. with a flourish, elizabeth put the finishing touches on georgiana's hair and stepped away. on her lips was a smile she hoped concealed some of the nerves that had been plaguing her all week. it had been a simple enough task to arrange a menu and hire musicians, to see that invitations went out on time... but now that the ball was actually upon her, she couldn't deny she was starting to feel the weight of it. tonight, she would be surrounded by those who would undoubtedly be quick to judge each and every one of her choices - from the dress she wore, to the color of the flowers in the ballroom. she did not care for the idle gossips and their wagging tongues... but she did care that she prove herself equal to the task of being mrs. darcy. she wanted it for her husband. and for her new sister... a sister whose habitual shyness was no doubt causing the girl anxieties of her own. she was going to kill d'argo - as slowly and as painfully as possible. it had been an easy decision to make after nearly two arns of waiting beside the transport pod without any sign of the luxan or the rest of the crew. it was his fault they were here at all - idling uselessly on a backwater commerce planet in hopes of meeting some contact or other of his. someone who supposedly could get them some much-needed supplies. aeryn had been skeptical from the moment he'd proposed the plan - which was why she was here. on frelling guard duty like an undisciplined cadet. apparently her negativity - to use crichton's word - would only complicate matters... they'd landed a good distance from the settlement in hopes of keeping a low profile and the clearing at the edge of the forest provided, she grudgingly admitted, decent cover... but when the sound of footsteps rustled in the brush, she breathed a sigh of relief. it took them long enough... her mouth opened to scold her companions for their tardiness, when something made her pause. a highly-trained instinct she knew better than to ignore. her hand went to the pulse pistol strapped to her thigh. whoever that was, it wasn't her friends.

" i hear you, " she said coolly, as she looked towards the sound, waiting for the figure to emerge. she made sure her weapon was clearly visible. " you might as well show yourself... "
