Mobsters Galore: More of Dom's Henchmen - 2021

I made some more mobster co-workers for Derek to interact with while at work. His Boss, Dom, just really needed more names to scream other than our boy, so... here we go. You can find my first henchmen intro post HERE.

@daedriyth is responsible for pitching the last two characters, but the middle-aged men are all me though, lol.

Carmine Notaro

Age: 63 || Birthday: November 13th ♏ || Traits: Perfectionist, Bookworm, Neat

Carmine is Dom's oldest friend, bookkeeper, and all-around right-hand man. He comes from a long family line of accountants and is the 6th generation owner of the Notaro Family accounting firm. Traditionally, the firm has always been led by a male family member, but with all five of his children now being young adult women, he is preparing to leave his business to his eldest daughter, Nora, the only child who has ever shown any interest in the family’s work. Carmine does, however, worry about Nora falling deep into the folds of the Mafia through her work at the firm, just as he did at around her age. He will never admit it, but he was always sort of relieved by the fact he had no sons, and he's proud that all his daughters have been busy doing their own thing and haven't married back into the mob like some of his own sisters did, but now, is Nora really starting to scare him.

Marco Valenti

Age: 61 || Birthday: August 12th ♌ || Traits: Self-Assured, Mean, Loyal

Marco Valenti is a bit of an old school legend in Dom's inner circle. His closest friends have jokingly been calling him "Mr. Clean" for years since he used to be known for his clean up jobs. He's semi-retired from that now, but to this day, nobody can make a problem disappear better than Valenti. Dom and Valenti are now business partners, splitting the expenses on their first joint renovation project, which they hope to have finished by the end of 2022. He and Carmine are very close friends as well and can often be found spending their down time from the Reno together, smoking their favorite Cuban cigars and drinking their scotch neat. Besides all the work stuff, Valenti makes cannelloni alla Bolognese that is simply to die for, and he enjoys helping his wife train her show dogs. He will fight you if you make fun of his 4 miniature poodles, they are insured, and he is a very good shot. Do not test him!

Giacomo Monti

Age: 31 || Birthday: March 19th ♓ ||Traits: Romantic, High-Maintenance, Clumsy

Monti is one of Dom's many nephews, and the most recent addition to Dom's inner circle… albeit more so out of necessity on his part. Nearly 4 years ago, he used his family connections to get a cushy, government desk job at the municipal Treasury office in Cicero, IL. But last President’s Day, in the midst of the pandemic, while his office was closed for the holiday, he chose to indulge in a little workplace fantasy of his with a lady friend of his who decided to record a POV video of her playtime with him. A few months later, she accidentally uploaded the video to her OF page, without censoring his face, starting a sex scandal that then spiraled into a full investigation, revealing Monti was embezzling money from the Treasury to generously pay and tip all the sex workers he regularly hired. Now his uncle Dom is working on damage control for his reputation, graciously giving Monti a place to stay as he works through his community service while on probation. Dom has also been pairing Derek up with Monti to run errands for the reno team, hoping Derek’s calm, family man demeanor will rub off on him… but it probably won't. Let's be real.

Lanora "Nora" Notaro

Age: 29 || Birthday: December 22nd ♑ || Traits: Ambitious, Insider, Active

Nora is Carmine's eldest daughter and has been working alongside him for years in his accounting firm, working hard to prove to him that she can carry on his practice and the family name. She knows that he worries about her, especially now that she's been helping out at Dom's renovation site, mostly out of boredom, and to see her old friend, Monti, again. She is a petite, out lesbian, now working mostly with rough and tumble, very traditional Italian men, many of whom are twice her age. She understands his apprehension there, but she's still eager to show everyone just how capable she truly is. She's been sparring with Newell for a while now, she's gained 10 pounds of muscle, and she couldn't care less about what anyone thinks of her. She just wants to do her job, and she craves the power and connections that come with it. Monti, however, is still confused about why she wants to be in the mob so badly, especially when he's trying to get out, but he does appreciate having her around all the time, especially since she seems to have no problem fending off all the guys who've been poking fun at him for his situation.

Speculation on Queer rights in Midgar & How It relates to my Reno Headcanon.

So this is something I’ve thought about for quite some time as being Queer is just part of Reno as I write him. He’s bisexual and HUGELY affectionate, But being a Turk comes with Pros and cons. I’ll just jump through the hoops and thinkythoughts in the order I had them, and discovered the bits of canon that lent thought to this. Things discussed will be The need to uphold the mantle of the Turk persona as an extension of ShinRa’s oppression Midgar’s social dynamic Midgar’s classism The pictures from the Ultimanium can be found on this post by blitzrod

My first thoughts on this topic started specifically with Verdot’s influence on Reno as a Rookie. Lets take a peek at Verdot’s setup and job environment.

Verdot has to worry about company Image. company image is a HUGE DEAL. It’s also integral to the job of the Turks. This is a transcript from Before Crisis from https://turkleader.tumblr.com/bcepisodes, i forget exactly which chapter o-o, but it’s in there.

Veld’s first concern is not the safety of the people. It’s company image. Why? It’s his JOB. These next pics are from the Final Fantasy VII Remake: Material Ultimania supports this.

Let me break this down. 1: it is not only Verdot’s job, but also Reno’s to hide ShinRa’s stink from public eye with cover ups and assassinations and the like. The Turks were even called in during the game Before Crisis episode 13 to clean up the Nibelheim incident after Sephiroth torched the place. This isn’t small scale cleanup. It’s ShinRa flexing it’s power over Regions clear outside the City through the Turks. (Don’t get me started on ShinRa and Wutai)

2: Sending out the Turks to knock someone down a peg over pointing out the companies blatant injustices is ShinRa flexing. 3: ShinRa controls everything through its monopolies, and when they can’t they send in the Turks to flex their authority either through cover ups, subjugation , kidnapping or assassination. I think people under the plate know exactly what the Turks are doing as far as suppression of the public goes, and that mantle of fear needs to be upheld for the company image. Someone barks too loud, The Turks make a show of paying a visit, and the naysayer is quickly gone. Furthermore, working security Detail for The President, Vice President, and Executives puts him as a recognizable face in the public image even more so due to ShinRa’s control on media. I don’t think it was by any means a stretch that Verdot would tell Reno “You can fuck who you want but you have to keep the company image clean. That’s our number 1 priority.” No rainbows on clothes, no paraphernalia on his days off, no drag, no bright makeups. You dress for the job and represent ShinRa 24/7 as its image. Keep anything queer in private. This is key even during Free time because the Turks are a public image. Reno has a solid paycheck and access to unprocessed raw goods once he’s been pulled topside. It’s very difficult to build up the physique Reno has without good food. That open chest shirt, showing off his health and sex appeal as someone with social status, money and privilege? Another ShinRa flex. It’s part of the tailored image. Once you pick things apart, the Turks are actually terrifying.

Oh look, more oppressions through limiting the peoples means to communicate widescale. And yet the Turks have REALLY nice phones. (Tseng’s super pretty phone comes to mind) More of ShinRa flexing.

YOU NEED A PERMIT TO LIVE TOPSIDE ISSUED BY SHINRA. The upper crust clamor for the chance to climb that social ladder because ShinRa is calling the shots. Social Class influences everything here in Midgar for the populace. Appearances matter. MONEY MATTERS. If you’re not good enough, ShinRa will probably take the permit. -sprinkles privilege- The first mission all new Turks get, is to patrol upper plate Sector 8. you find this out in Chapter one of Before Crisis. This is a Residential area. The Turks are a public face. They are in no way hidden from the public.

Control the rich and keep the poor and the laborers stupid and subjugated. This is key to note in tandem with ShinRa’s iron grip over the media. I guarantee you ShinRa controls the curriculum in ALL OF THEM. Did I mention the fact that Reno WENT to one of said fancy ass schools? When Reno was pulled from the slums, the most important and influential thing he attained was new social class and privilege. But it also meant his education was railroaded to be a Turk, and readily groomed by both Barker and Veld to accept the role as a tool for ShinRa’s oppression. Let’s look at what else shinRa controls besides schools and you know. Everything.. They control transportation and utilities like clean drinking water, and electricity.

We’ve already established they control food. All governance lies with the Executives.

Do you see where i’m going with this? ShinRa Senior is....a tyrant at best. Let me just...post a throwback.

ShinRa even tightly controls the population of the upper plate.

Now let’s take another look at Reno.

Suddenly the image of your neighborhood friendly Turk patrolling sector 8 residential areas isn’t so Friendly. It’s a symbol of ShinRa watching you. Also, with the social climate he’s in, I really don’t think its even REMOTELY safe to be openly queer. Let alone as a Turk. Given ShinRa Seniors overwhelming need for oppression there’s no way Midgar has any sort of queer rights or anti discrimination laws when ShinRa rarely contributes to the peoples welfare despite the fact most of it’s workers live there.

This image of wealth, power, affluence, status, health is all 100 percent catered to ShinRa’s needs. This isn’t Reno as his found family among the Turks knows him. It’s a Turk, and that’s exactly the way it needs to be to do ShinRa’s dirty work.

To the upper class living topside, he presents himself as tailored, clean, sexually appealing, healthy, charming, suitably upper class, wealthy, upkept, and of high social status. He’s ‘friendly’ because the classists and rich would only consider those of equal financial status as worthy. He looks like money. The weapon, the tailored suit, the hair, the chopper, the materia, the education. To just about anyone under the plate he represents ShinRa’s oppression and a grisly end. Given just how integral ShinRa is into everything, and how closely tied the Turks are to upholding it, there is no chance in hell Reno would be allowed to break that image of clean cut deadly by being visibly queer.

Lets look at some info about the slums and more specifically Wall market where The Honeybee Inn and the Drag scene reside!

Andrea more than has the sense and intelligence to make a business for himself topside as a club owner, because he’s thriving in the city’s underbelly, not only working with an oppressive city government, but also because he manages to work his way between Don Corneo’s fat little fingers and dealing with Corneo as a boss, and STILL. THRIVING. But he’s running the Honeybee Inn in Wall Market. While Wall Market might be the entertainment district, its worth noting That the whole setup still screams ‘limited by oppression’. The message that Queers are seen as undesirables in Midgar unless they’re somehow useful to someone else (In this case as entertainment) just slaps of discrimination once you’ve had a look through the Material Ultimania and read between the lines. AND DESPITE ALL OF IT. THIS KING THRIVES. (sorry I really like Andrea. -cough- ) All of this really concludes that...Queer Rights of any kind likely don’t exist in Midgar. Reno has traded the ability to be visibly queer, and make his own decisions about self expression, poverty, bad health, a bleak future in favor of privilege, affluence, status, money, good health, and the weight of a heavy conscience to Do ShinRa’s dirty work. Both option came with pros and cons. While the Turks largely do their work in Secret, I think there’s a definite public image/double life they have to present to feed ShinRa’s image. I think as someone Bi he’s likely closeted, now that I’ve read between the lines, and keeps it hidden to all but those closest to him due to his environment and social restrictions. However,

AN: Oooohhh yeah! Let’s do this! My brothers and I have been on a cooking spree, my bedroom is a mess, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna get grief for not cleaning up the move in boxes, but I really need to write something for Rufus TT^TT He needs some love, too!

~ First and foremost, yes, I know he’s a jerk. But he’s a jerk who almost died, and is now not as much of a jerk. He’s working on it! He’s so young! He has time to improve! I mean Sephiroth almost destroyed the Planet a few times, and Genesis kick started the mayhem, but we still love them!

~ Rufus has dated before the events of FFVII, so if you’re one of the poor unfortunate souls that tried to pursue him before his near death experience... (*sighs and pats your shoulder sympathetically)

~ Pre-FFVII Rufus learned all his relationship tricks from observing his father’s habits and behaviors from when he was young. Namely, pursue what you’re interested in without hesitation.

~ Pre-FFVII Rufus would never pursue anyone he considers lower than his station. In fact, ‘the help’ pretty much don’t exist in his eyes much like they don’t exist to many other rich folks. Any attempts to catch his sky blue eyes will be unnoticed.

~ He’s only learned to spoil the individual of his affections with materialistic things. Emotional vulnerability isn’t something that he knows how to express to someone that he should treat as an equal without it being related to business.

~ His near death experience humbles him an immense amount. It is around this time that he’ll take notice and respect those who weren’t born into affluence

~ It is very unlikely that any relationship Meteorfall would last. The world, and Rufus, had changed too much to continue with the old as if nothing happened.

~ But you must be wondering about how you’d fallen into this man’s life if he was so unavailable to the normal populace.

~ You were an AVALANCHE plant into Shinra, where you worked as one of the staff that attended to President Shinra and Rufus Shinra. Your cover story was that you were orphaned in recent years due to escalated conflict between AVALANCHE and Shinra. You were taken in by your mother’s sister, who was sickly and unable to work. As a result, you decided to get a part time job while you completed schooling. Normally, this wouldn’t fly, as you were two years younger than Rufus at the time, but Shinra was never bothered by child labor.

~ You had originally volunteered to spy on the Company executives as a Turk trainee, but Elfie, the leader of AVALANCHE at the time, didn’t wish for someone so young to be put in a place where you were at the mercy of Shinra.

~ Still, working as a maid was hardly dignified work when your employer had a habit of leering at the staff. You had more use as a chef due to having to cook for yourself from an early age.

~ While President Shinra has little problem bribing and seducing members of the work staff into his bed each night, you noticed that Rufus Shinra had not shared his father’s sentiments... at least, not to the same extent that his father did.

~ Rufus Shinra did not take random maids into his bed every night. No. If he ever took a woman into his bed, it was some social climber or heiress that he’d met during a company gala. He would strive to enjoy her company to the fullest of his ability, but rarely did the women he brought back last further than a month with the company heir.

~ You did your best to stay anonymous while feeding information back to AVALANCHE, barely even causing a need for concern when your talents as a chef were discovered and you were transferred to work the kitchens. Even when Rufus had been kidnapped by your fellow troops, and his plot to betray his father revealed, you remained dutiful and inconspicuous.

~ Eventually, you were sent with some of the Turks and part of the main staff with Rufus when he was placed under home arrest. President Shinra had attempted to pursue you during the years of your employment, but you’d remained steadfast and unwilling despite the loyalty that you’d demonstrated during your years of service. Which was why he decided that you were trustworthy enough to spy on his son for him. The humor in the situation was not lost on you.

~ Rufus, in turn, had the Turks under his command run background checks on all the staff that had followed him from the main Shinra estate.

~ Normally, Rufus would have taken zero interest in you. You were, after all, an average civilian by all means. But the one thing that he really took note of, was that you’d been part of the cleaning staff at first before somehow getting transferred into the kitchen staff. Rufus had been impressed by the quality of his food as of recently, so he was pleased to put a name and face to the work.

~ And then he noted that you were younger than him and fairly attractive. He wondered if you had ever slept with his father for money.

~ When Tseng reported that you had been one of the only members on staff that hadn’t slept with President Shinra, Rufus found himself intrigued. Most commoners only ever showed interest in pleasing the rich for their money. For you to turn down the excessive amount of money that his father normally offered in payment... well, you were rather strange.

~ He kept an eye on you after that. Just a notice of what you were doing every so often. Sending his compliments whenever you cooked a particularly delicious meal.

~ After the fiasco with Elfie and Veld, AVALANCHE needed people within Shinra more than ever, sending others into the company to spy. With your established presence in Shinra, you were tasked only to spy on the comings and goings of the executives that visited Rufus, or monitor any business dealings that the newly appointed Vice President was involved in.

~ For a while, you were content with your job cooking meals and occasionally sending out encrypted correspondences to your superiors. And then Rufus left the island for a business meeting that was supposed to be several days long... only to return within the same night because he simply refused to eat anything other than what you cooked.

~ It had been around midnight when Reno sheepishly roused you from your sleep, stating that the vice president was back and he hadn’t been able to eat a decent meal all day. In the back of your mind, you stressed and screamed how it would be possible to cook a full course meal in such little time alone.

~ Still, you hurried to wash your face and brush your teeth, not bothering to change out of your nightwear as you left the room, feeling that haste was more important than propriety. It’s not like Shinra ever comes into the kitchen anyways. I’m going to have to change out of these clothes when I finish cooking. You sulked, not wanting to go to sleep in pajamas that smelled like cooked food.

It is when you were in the middle of making the meal, with a black apron draped over your pajamas, that the door to the kitchen opens. Expecting Reno, who normally came in to snack on whatever you were making, you didn’t turn around. “Reno, for the last time, when I’m cooking for Mr. Shinra, you’re not allowed to mooch for scraps!”

“Does Reno often enter the kitchens to steal food?”

When you were asked by Elena and Reno what your reaction was, you denied being overly startled... even if you did drop the wooden stirring spoon into the large pot of broth.

Quickly fishing the utensil from falling further into the broth, you set the spoon aside and turned to face Rufus Shinra with wide startled eyes. “Mr. Shinra! I... um apologize for my lack of professionalism.” There’s an unasked question to your expression as your gaze darted back and forth between the stove top and your boss. What are you doing in here?

Rufus, for his part, only smirked and gestured to his own attire. Black button down and loose sweatpants, his normally brushed back blonde hair hung in his face. “I believe I’ve inconvenienced you enough by asking you to wake up to cook, Y/N.” His smirk widened, “Don’t mind me, continue as you would.”

The nervous smile on your lips betrayed your thoughts as you turned back to finish up the meal, trying and failing to ignoring the observant blue eyes directed at your back. After a time of silence, with just the vice president staring at you as you cooked, you spoke up with a stutter, “Um... Reno does occasionally come into the kitchen for a snack. B-but it’s not that much of a bother!” You didn’t want to get the friendly Turk in trouble.

“I can have him removed from the kitchen, if you’d like, Y/N.”

The way he said your name sent strange shivers up your spine, and you turned to peek at your boss. “Um... n-no. That’s really not necessary, Mr. Shinra. Reno’s like an annoying big brother. I can handle him.”

Silence settled over the kitchen once more, and you turned to continue stirring the soup, checking the oven for the roasting vegetables. “If you don’t mind my asking, Mr. Shinra... why have you decided to come into the kitchen today? You normally wait in your office or the dining room for the waiting staff to serve you.”

After a beat without answer, you’d begun to think that you’d offended the vice president... and then, “To be honest, I wanted a change of pace from the usual propriety. Eating alone gets tedious and frustrating after a while.” His eyes took on a glint as he stared at you, “And I found myself curious as to who you were. I can’t say I’m disappointed.”

Your shoulders were so tense that you were sure that you’d wake up the next day with an ache. “So, I take it that you’ll be eating in the kitchen?”

Rufus smirked, “That would be a correct assumption, Y/N.”

~ After that night, Rufus would often take his meals in the kitchen unless he was particularly weighed down by work. This caused quite the panic among the kitchen staff, and only served to annoy you when he laid off half the staff in favor of just having you as his private chef. Simply put, you went everywhere that Rufus did.

~ Despite the professionalism you exhibited, serving private meals to Rufus and his dates helped you learn more about the young man. There seemed to be two sides to him, Vice President Shinra, and Rufus.

~ Vice President Shinra was ruthless and fearsome. His business savvy rivaled only the harshest of businessmen, and he treated others with calculated cockiness and false generosity. He often acted in this manner.

~ The other side of him, Rufus, was quiet and reserved despite his business upbringing. This man rewarded loyalty and human gestures, he had a weak spot for desserts, and often made sarcastic comments. He was immensely lonely despite his power and renown, though he hid this part of him behind layers and layers of arrogance. If you were honest with yourself, you had become fond of Rufus Shinra.

~ It is the brief glimpse of humanity that was the reason you found yourself in Shinra Headquarters as Diamond Weapon approached the city.

~ You hadn’t been given orders from anyone in AVALANCHE in a long time, and took that to mean that the organization had shifted its focus elsewhere. This meant that you were free to do as you pleased. And with how close the Diamond Weapon was to Midgar, you found yourself racing to the President’s Office to get the stubborn man out of the building.

~ You reach the office at the same time that the Turks did. They shot you questioning looks as you shoved your way into the office. Out in the distance, a bright light lit up the metropolis, and you didn’t have much time to think before you’d jumped over a desk to pull Rufus to cover. Only a second later, the entire office was blown up.

~ After assisting the Turks in escorting Rufus out of the building and onto an evacuation helicopter, you revealed who you were to the Turks and Rufus. Although you were interrogated further on to what you’d been doing while in Shinra, the worst that you were punished with, was to be let go from your position.

~ Nearly a year later, after you’d used your savings (more than eight years worth of your salary) to open up a small cafe in Edge, you had moved on from your time with Shinra. While you still thought of Rufus and the Turks, you’d never allowed yourself to hope that they might stop by and visit.

~ And none of them showed up, until after you were afflicted with Geostigma.

~ It was a strange moment, when Reno and Rude both walked into your cafe, a cocky smirk on the red head’s face and Rude stoic professionalism. You’d been summoned by Rufus... well, the exact wording was that you were invited to join Rufus for lunch. And while you were slightly peeved at having to leave the cafe to your employees for the day, you went with the Turks regardless. You were just glad to have the opportunity to see them again.

~ Seeing Rufus in the wheelchair at the Healen Lodge, with cloth and bandages covering him... prompted you to reflexively clutch at your own bandaged arm, which was hidden from sight by the jacket you wore. Still, Rufus had always been an observant man.

~ He’d confessed to you his theory that Geostigma was caused by the lingering malicious will of Sephiroth in the Lifestream. And although you’d never blamed Shinra for the plague that was Geostigma, you could tell that Rufus didn’t want you to blame him for that state that you were in.

~ There was no cure, you were told. For you, and for Rufus, your time was short. And then a proposal, “Would you like to return to your previous position?” Somehow, you weren’t quite so sure that was what he meant to say.

~ It is later, when Rufus had retired for the day, that Elena pulled you aside and explained that while Rufus had missed your cooking, he’d missed the companionship that you’d provided. His words, “Would you like to return to your previous position?” was Rufus’ way of asking, “Would you like to spend the rest of your life with me?” or perhaps more accurately, “Would you stay by my side as I die?”

~ And damn it, you were always a bleeding heart, weren’t you.

~ The next morning, when Rufus awoke, a grant breakfast awaited him, with you already sipping your coffee, apron still on.

~ The two of you eventually fell into a comfortable routine as you moved into the Healen Lodge, running your business from afar while remaining by Rufus’ side. At some point, Rufus had taken to holding your hand during meals or when you’d rest against him on the sofa. He’d started to walk around you without the bandages and sheet, only using the wheelchair when the Geostigma became too painful.

~ You didn’t even know that you were dating Rufus until Reno said that he’d get in trouble for flirting with his boss’ s/o. Rufus had been in the room at the time, and did not refute the sentiment, only reinforcing the fact by lacing his fingers with your own and stroking the back of your palm with his thumb.

~ It is so like Rufus to be absolutely certain that you returned his affections. Stupid stubborn fool.

~ Rufus is sweet when the two of you are left to your privacy. He’s as much a cuddler as you are willing to put up with, and he’ll put up with any amount of cuddling you desire.

~ He’s prone to spoiling you, though when you tell him that you would prefer more meaningful gifts, he starts to think about what is useful to you rather than simple showering you with designer clothing or jewelry. He learns to clean and cook just to make you happy.

~ He’s stubborn, refusing to acknowledge that he’s severely weakened even to himself. But it’s during these times where you need to support him the most. Because eventually, the disease will take its toll, and you have to be there to catch Rufus when he falls.

~ It’s almost like the two of you are living each day like your last, except for the fact that Rufus, ever stubborn and determined, has been using his resources to find a cure. Because he can’t accept that the two of you are going to die. Not when he’s only lived his life in a way that he now regrets.

~ At night, when he presses chaste kisses to your lips and pulls you close, Rufus often recounts the things that he regrets most. And letting you go after Meteorfall was his biggest.

~ “It’s my biggest regret. And now, when I have you here by my side, what I want more than anything is more time with you.”

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN

A year ago today, 46-year-old George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis as then–police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. As bystanders begged Chauvin to get up, a teenage girl walking by had the presence of mind to video what was happening. Thanks to that girl, Darnella Frazier, we all could hear Floyd telling Chauvin, “I can’t breathe.”

Floyd’s murder sparked more than 4700 protests across the nation that popularized both the idea that policing must be reformed and the concept that American systems, starting with law enforcement and moving to include housing, healthcare, education, and so on, are racially biased. In the past fourteen months, support for the Black Lives Matter movement among white people has jumped 5%, fueled mostly by younger people.

And yet, the rate of deaths at the hands of law enforcement officials has not changed, and Black people are three times more likely than white people to die at the hands of law enforcement even though they are 1.3 times more likely to be unarmed.

In April, a jury convicted Chauvin of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He will be sentenced in June.

After the jury convicted Chauvin, President Joe Biden promised Floyd’s family that he would deliver a police reform bill. Today he and Vice President Kamala Harris met with Floyd’s family privately in the Oval Office for more than an hour, but the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act has not become law. The act bars the use of chokeholds and makes it easier to prosecute police officers, but lawmakers have been unable to compromise over so-called “qualified immunity,” a federal doctrine established in 1967 by the Supreme Court that protects officials—including law enforcement officers—from personal liability for much of their behavior while they execute their professional duties. Members of both parties, though, say a deal on the measure is in sight.

Today we learned that the Manhattan district attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., has recently called together a special grand jury to hear a number of cases, including whether to indict former President Trump, other people in charge of running his company, or the Trump Organization itself. That a grand jury is considering whether a former president committed a crime is unprecedented.

It also suggests that Vance believes there is evidence of a crime. There appears to be a focus on whether the Trump Organization manipulated the value of real estate to make it seem more valuable when trying to get loans against it, and less valuable when listing it for tax valuations. Investigators are also looking at compensation for Trump Organization executives.

Vance began to investigate in 2018 after Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to making hush-money payments for Trump and to lying to Congress.

The former president also responded today to a lawsuit filed by Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who in March filed a lawsuit against Trump; Donald Trump, Jr.; Alabama Representative Mo Brooks; and Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani for inciting the insurrection of January 6. Trump’s lawyers asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming that the president has “absolute immunity conveyed on the President by the Constitution as a key principle of separation of powers." The memo is the usual political attack we have come to expect from Trump, but it’s interesting: his claim that he enjoys absolute immunity leaves the rest of the defendants out in the cold.

On January 22, just two days after President Biden took office, Lincoln Project founder George Conway published a piece in the Washington Post noting that Trump’s frantic efforts to stay in office might well have been “a desperate fear of criminal indictment.” Trump needed the protection of the presidency to avoid the fallout from his connections with Russia; the Ukraine scandal; and bank, insurance, and tax fraud. Conway noted that refusing to prosecute ex-presidents would undermine the rule of law because it would place them above the law: they could do whatever they wished as president—including trying to overthrow our democracy—knowing they would never answer for it.

Trump, of course, has refused to admit he lost the 2020 election. Today, he issued a statement suggesting that all potential prosecution of him would be political, saying that he was “far in the lead for the Republican Presidential Primary and the General Election in 2024.”

Trump’s memo also suggested he had a First Amendment right to say whatever he wished about the 2020 election, but in January, criminal law professor Joseph Kennedy of the University of North Carolina School of Law pointed out that while Trump’s speech might have been protected, he had a legal duty to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, a duty that meant he should have immediately told his supporters to stop what they were doing on January 6. His supporters breached the Capitol shortly after 2:00 p.m., and he did not ask them to leave until 4:17, in a video that was itself incendiary.

Meanwhile, the “audit” of 2020 ballots in Maricopa County hit another pothole when the Pennsylvania-based technology company in charge of running the recount refused to renew its contract, which expired on May 14, the day the process was supposed to be done. Wake Technology Services Inc. was subcontracting under Cyber Ninjas. A different technology company has taken over from Wake TSI.

The Nevada Republican Party has its own troubles. It recently censured Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, a Republican, charging that she had failed “to investigate election fraud” in the 2020 election. Recently, one of the people who claimed to have voted for that censure said on a podcast that he is a member of the far-right Proud Boys. He said he and about 30 of his friends had been urged by state Republican leaders to step into the political fray on the side of the former president and were, he claimed, the deciding votes on the censure. Republicans in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, and in Washoe County, which includes Reno, are now trying to clean the Proud Boys and their ilk out of the party, while Trump loyalists are now trying to purge the party of anti-Trump people.

As of today, 50% of adult Americans are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and on May 24th, the seven-day average of new cases was the lowest it has been at any point since last June. But those numbers are driven by the vaccinated part of the population. Among those who are unvaccinated, the rate of disease and death is estimated to be as high as it was in late January.
