Chekhov Reads Dungeon Meshi: CH49

Mmmmmbig chicken.

It's not non-sense, it's common-sense. But dang, orcs really have that toxic adventuring gender stuff down, huh.

Dwarves are comprised of many basic shapes, such as...... cube....and.......two circle.....

.....It's..........TURNING into a dungeon.

Like an architectural structure has a natural evolutionary progression, including, apparently, becoming a dungeon if enough magic leaks into it? This is fascinating. Like magical radiation that poisons the natural architecture and creates monsters. That's fucked up.

But I need to know more immediately.

Though wait, I think Marcille's flashback chapters talked about creating and maintaining dungeons so it MUST be a well understood phenomenon.

It's a small detail, but the group having a horse (pony?) with them and Senshi later getting attached to a horse-like monster feels extremely intentional. I wonder if it'll be explicitly mentioned or if I'm just reading too much into things.

......Anne was the name of the Kelpie. :( That's 100% of purpose. Oh no. Why do you do this to me.

....aaaand that's where Senshi's strong parental instincts kick in.

Dwarves are tough. A part of me wonders if that guy was hanging on to whatever life he had left, just barely making it through to feed Senshi........ A walking corpse, by all other names, hanging on for the sake of it.

It's really cool to see Senshi grow so much in the span of a few panels. And the orcs softening up is such a common theme it's not even surprising.

It's a level of not giving a fuck that you can aspire to.

We alredy know what's Chilchuck's worst nightmare. What if I told you that it was canon?

His daughters have alredy been eaten. His wife was eaten too. His family are all dead. His worst nightmare has come truth. And he for sure feels like it's partially his fault, because it's the Winged Lion doing, yes, but who helped Laios get here? Chilchuck. And who's daughters and wife are now dead because of it? Chilchuck's. The suggestion of recreating them tells us that they've alredy been eaten. The way he says it makes it feel like it's too late. They're dead. Because of him. Of his actions. Of his job. The irony of it all is actually quite cruel. He makes a union so he can prevent bad things to happen to his race, to his family, and then, and he works at the union. And now, because of his job, he got them all killed.

He doesn't even know how his daughters are until way later, I don't even know if in the manga they send letters to him during the feast, because I know they don't go to said feast. So Chilchuck doesn't know if his girls are alright until, again, way later. We know they don't die because, well, there's this comic of them going to meet Laios, the new king. But if not for that, who could tell us they didn't die on the monster appearances? I can imagine that after the feast Chil went stright to check on them. Because he loves his daughters, and he cares for his wife. He sucks at communicating it, yes, but he does.

He doesn't want to risk his family's safety. But he, unknowingly, unwillingly, indirectly, did. He got them eaten by those demons because he helped his friends achieve his goal. Because he cared about Falin and wanted her to be human again. Because he cared about Laios and didn'twanted to see him loose his sister. Because he cared about Marcille, Senshi and Itsuzumi. He cares so much about everyone and wants to help everyone (in his own way), that he doesn't think that the result would, inevitably so, be the worst outcome for him. The one in wich work and private life get mixed together. His job as a member of Laios's party ended dragging his family in, despite his best efforts. His job ended up, not only endangering the whole word with demons, but his family. His four precious girls. It ended up almost killing them (probably it killed them for some time because getting eaten by those demons works wierd).

Worst part? He didn't have the time to be mourn over what he 100% sure thought was the complete loss of his family. He was in a hurry to survive himself, so he pushed those sad feelings and tried his best to help who he had left. Later on he finds out that the demons spitted out people. And he seems shocked with some kind of surprised relief.

He looks how everyone that got eaten was alive. And he can't quite either believe it nor understand it. He is really confused. So they didn't die? Are my daughters ok? Is my wife ok? Did everybody survived? Are they alive? He dares to hope that they're all ok and pulls into a box his feelings again, saving it up for when he has the time to be overwhelmed about this all. He has a feast, trying not to worry, but worried sick. Then he goes home and checks on them.

Give this poor man a break and a beer...

my swap au because I've been Pondering:

Ais->Leander: He's the rough yet charismatic leader of the Seaspring, much more lively and boisterous than og Ais, partly because he does actually have a gang!! He still has a deal with Ocudeus and many of his gang members are part of the Seaspring, but he does have some sane ones... For now.

Leander->Ais: Former leader of the Bloodhounds, now spiteful and moping in the nearest run-down bar. The Senobium took down his gang since he was getting a little too "confident", but he's still trying to find a way to take them down (while drinking the pain away)

Kuras->Mhin: A wandering angel trying to atone for his sins by destroying the "filth" from the Underworld. He believes if he kills enough of them or suffers long enough, he'll be saved at long last.

Mhin->Vere: The Senobium's newest pet, a desperate fledgling who was caught when trying to escape their curse. Mhin isn't quite as old as Vere, but they've been around long enough to start resigning to their new job and their cursed—yet somewhat useful—power.

Vere->Kuras: Honestly idk everyone else's switch kiiiinda clicks into place except for his. I was gonna say he found himself pitying the poor or something and that's why he became Low-towns' doctor but like that's so noble it feels wrong on Vere yk. Please help. I do know his healing hurts like hell tho (think Marcille from Dunmeshi, like yeah her healing does the job but it's still torture)

Fifth entry of my “Dunmeshi rarepairs I will birth with my own hands if I have to” series. This one’s straight up embarrassing, like of course the shadow version of Chilchuck and Marcille would get me.

It suddenly grabbed me out of nowhere. What got me thinking about it is this exchange, first comic third panel, because like… Woah. He knows she has a thing for Kabru? Or something. And he has NO FEAR. Like it’s so forward and has 0 pretenses lmao. And then I thought… And oh no. Oh no.

"I can fix him" x "I can make her worse"

Very uptight and strict and rules-following and too self-aggrandizing tbh x will not hesitate to insult you to your face and sleazy and free spirit…. Kuro is involved in an ot3 of sorts in my head and basically they drag her into Situations of various moral standing aka scams or idk going to a club god forbid. I think she needs to relax and get taken down 1 peg maybe, and I think he needs like…….. Someone to teach him what is unhealthy lmao, also remind him to get work benefits, and if they can like get to feel safe and comfy with one another (and god just the road there would be a beautiful trainwreck to watch) they would be gossip besties worsties.

Kabru needs to be the epitome of morals but like, if it’s Mickbell she can lower the bar… Just for him… <3 She can fix him just a little and she’ll be like "wow! Ok I can settle for this amount of upstanding behavior from you Mickbell you get a gold star"

I never expected it ok I read this extra expecting nothing and god knows why I saw him be like "hey u like Kabru right. You’re his babysitter right. Which poor sap is being Kabru’s maid" with 0 fear and her being so casually pissed back at him and idk, how they’re so comfy being not polite with one another but they’re still coworkers-friends despite it… Crazy for how prickly they both are that they manage that much. They bicker and see each other as annoying at best but weirdly dependable and friends despite it all and……….. I am going to grow them in a lab and observe how I can make it work

MICKBELL IS A REBOUND MORE AT 9??? Maybe Rin and Mickbell have a one night stand and then the aftermath dynamic is this….. She probably regrets it. And then it gets more complex and grows into something odd as she becomes hyperaware of him and they have this little complicity thing going on….

I think cuddling with Kuro (who would be more like a platonic protective & soothing presence in his and Rin’s relationship rather than romo) would destress her actually I think she needs and deserves it. Go to a dog cafe bbygirl it’ll fix you. So what I’m saying is the three of them watch a movie and Rin and Mickbell are sitting on Kuro’s laps and everyone is so comfy. Kuro’s legs die halfway through but he’s self-sacrificing it’s fine….. Actually Mick is on his laps Rin’s just nuzzled into his side. There, fixed. I am so weirdly invested in them… They’re funky to think about. Rin seeing Mickbell and Kuro like "you guys are aware that what you two have is fucked up right" and then joining them in the messy dynamic 🤝 Put them in situations. That will be all.

The sheer amount of sass on their own, let alone together…

Make them get drunk together it’ll be glorious

Me: I read/watch Delicious in Dungeon for The Plot The Plot (spoilers for S01E16: Cleaners/Dried with Sweet Sake and the manga, Chapter 31: Sea Serpent, Part 1):

I also really love this fond look Marcille has for Laios and his excitement/him appreciating her genius/making use of the dungeon/whatever. It's really sweet. Chilchuck is tired and doesn't like being nearly drowned in a wall by a handsy elf.

Laios is so adorable when he's happy like this. Poor Senshi lol

Finally we get the first true Labru episode, my beloved.

Just shocked to see this mess of an adventurer. Kabru thoughts: Oh no he's hot. (yes I know he's not the one talking here, it just looks funny)

Kabru is so good-looking this episode, I took so many screencaps of him. He just looks so amazing in the anime. I love it.

Putting on smooth talker mode. Love him. Gotta flirt with the blonde tall-man for intel. I blame this whole arc for making me think Kabru is short; he's not short, Laios is just taller lol (Laios is 6'1"/185 cm tall, Kabru is 5'7"/170 cm tall). Or at least Kabru is still fitting the tall-man name and a lot taller than most other races, like the elves, just not as much as Laios is. (And for the curious: Toshiro is 5'11"/180 cm tall, so even he's shorter than Laios). I think between Toshiro, Laios, and Inutade (a 6'5"/195 cm ogre), I just had a weird impression of Kabru's height. (All heights from Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible)

Kabru being dangerous and also cute still. I just... I have too many screencaps of him alkdjalj Beautiful man.

Toshiro is a saint for tolerating this man. But they are cute together.

Kabru and Laios kill me T-T I wanted to fic for them ever since Kabru first showed up in the manga cause he was really cute and I wanted more of him and he seemed fucky enough that he would be fun to fic for, especially with the sort of enemies to lovers vibes of his party chasing Laios' party for revenge.

And then there's this chapter cover lol (this is actually two episodes ago story-wise, but it feels more relevant here):

And I was screaming in joy XD Particularly after we got to Kabru's obsession/curiosity about Laios in particular. I was putting off ficcing for them in case they actually met and yup, they did lol I still have a lot of ideas for fics for them. Maybe someday.

This man is having the time of his life with this nonsense and I love it roflmao He was like "they're either evil masterminds or stupid" and it's kind of the latter and mostly just "they're weird and it's funny" lol

I know he's faking so hard but it's still cute lol (Especially cause Laios offered to treat him to a meal, like hello, Labru date????) One thing I love about them as a pairing is their weirdness interacts in fun ways and it is hilarious.

This man is here for this absolute train wreck and I could not be happier for him. And them. Look at that little blush. Bless him.

Truly a phenomenal episode. It's also interesting seeing how... disrespectful, shall we say, to be polite, just about every character is to each other. You've got Chilchuck insulting Marcille for getting incapacitated, Marcille shoving Chilchuck into a wall to nearly drown without explanation, Toshiro's retainers - particularly Maizuru - being patronizing to all the non-tall-men (and any outsiders, really, considering at least what Maizuru thinks of Falin), Laios being... disrespectful to Toshiro with his name, and Kabru lying his ass off to get the deets on what the heck is going on and essentially being the human embodiment of -grabs popcorn-. It's a lot of really interesting character, social, and political dynamics. Everyone's a mess and I love it. I'm late cause of various nonsense with me misreading something and thinking they skipped a week and being busy but ahhhh such delicious food to catch up on. So good.

Chilchuck says he's heard of people being revived from this before (does he mean just bones or just a skull or?) it's not a common thing so…

Marcille says the link between Falin's body and spirit is super weak rn (bc the worse the body is damaged, the weaker the link) so she should not be moved rn

common reason for failed resurrections is if the soul separated too far or if the body was not fully restored

Marcille suggests getting a resurrection specialist to resurrect her there

resurrections require twice the amount of calories for the damaged parts of the body (which if brought from outside would rot on the way down to the 5th floor) - so they gonna use DRAGON MEAT

I am loving the vibes Marcille gives off now that we're entering the zone of her magical expertise

Senshi says "black magic" is evil and Marcille says that magic has no morality

Chilchuck wonders if Marciless is one of the dark elves (bc she uses forbidden magic)

she says she is looking into ways it can be used for the people

Senshi went to cook but he went to cook near the dragon and well, if he lights a fire near the fuel the dragon has stored for his fire breath… disaster

ah here we go, Falin cast the defensive magic and saved Senshi's ass (literally) but she didn't chant which means VERY POWERFUL MAGIC-ING HAPPENED

Hey sorry it took me too long, I was thinking and finally got another idea for a DunMeshi fic! Can you please write Laios's party meeting a runaway teen reader in the dungeon and Laios is like "We can't leave this kid alone!" so the teen joins the party. But teen reader's really chaotic and always put themself in danger because they wanna fight too. Poor Chilchuck have dad instincts so teen reader always gives him heart attacks. That's all, thank you! ٩(＾◡＾)۶

Finding a runaway was not on the agenda for saving Falin, but Laios was too worried about the youngsters and wanted to take them with him. “COME ON, CHILCHUCK, WE CANT LEAVE THEM HERE BY THEMSELVES, THEY COULD GET HURT." Laios pleaded with the half-foot. "NO, IT'S ALREADY HARD ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH JUST THREE OF YOU; ADDING ANOTHER WILL ONLY BE EXTRA WORK." That half-foot harshly poked Laio's cheek and yelled. You, of course, watched this all happen and laughed at them, thinking maybe they would be fun to be around.

After a bit of arguing and voting, the new member (Y/N) has joined the group! At first, Chuck was annoyed and didn’t talk to them, but sometimes he couldn’t help but speak up when they were acting foolish. “hey! You encounter a mimic and learn from Laios that if you flip it over, it’s easier to kill, but Chilchuck, having his rounds with them, knows they only mean trouble. After realizing you’ve backed yourself in a corner and were about to get murked by the mimic, you heard a yell and then saw Chilchuck tackle the mimic and shove it, flipping it, and felt a hand grab yours. “YOU CANT JUST FIGHT THEM LIKE THAT WHATS WRONG WITH YOU." Chilchuck started to say words in his language, assuming he was cursing you out.

After getting away from the mimic, you breathe hard and turn to the half-foot to see him out of breath and exhausted. “Are you okay, Chilchuck?” you asked him, feeling bad that you made him suffer so much because of your stupidity. Chilchuck turned to you with a scowl. "Seriously, have you learned nothing? You can’t just fight a monster like that one-on-one, that’s something not even Laios would do!”. Under all that anger is fear; he’s just worried you might get hurt. Chilchuck would never say it out loud, but ever since they’ve picked you up, he’s seen you as one of his children, reminding him how crazy and reckless teens can be and how much you remind him of his kids. You look at Chilchuck and, with a smile, say, “Thank you for saving me, Chilchuck. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” You smiled, but the words made Chilchuck blush out of embarrassment. “Whatever you’re a kid, it’s only natural for an adult to protect you. He truly does care for you.

Ugh, your writing is beautiful. Not a request, but rather a ramble: I'd like to think of a dragon!hybrid/person being like a bit off-put by Laios and the others. Like, imagine one of the big guys of your dragon group, the red dragon gets temporarily slain and eaten. It gets worse! The same people who slain said dragon, and it's quite obvious which one is the weird one. (Laios) is finding you and spamming you with questions! Like, don't eat me?? Also, I'd like to imagine draconic peeps have a similar feature of having their tails fall off when they're scared, like lizards lol.

i can't imagine being a hybrid and not being off put by Laios. he's staring at you so intensely, probably asking a lot of invasive questions, and secretly planning what type of meal he'd put you in if he had the chance. however as a dragon hybrid?! oh goodness, it's definitely tenfold the horror and terror— they not only took out the giant red dragon but ate them too! and it's obvious who's idea that was by the bloodthirsty look in his eyes (laios!!)

imagine being able to shift from one form to another, being chased to be eaten bc you're a weaker dragon, only to shift into a human form. marcille and chilchuck set their foot down, and laios begrudgingly agrees not to eat you. instead he takes this time to study you- asking question after question after question, wanting to feel your scales & tail & wings, he asks for you to shift into dragon form so he can see it up close n personal, etc.

meanwhile poor dragon hybrid! reader is absolutely shaking in their boots, praying laios doesn't randomly go berserk and decide to eat them. also yea, the tail falling off like a lizard is hilarious! imagine it just falls off bc laios scares the shit out of you and you just gotta wait for it to regrow but that's so embarrassing esp bc laios is now asking even more questions and bringing it to light to everyone uGH
