I want to share an app that I absolutely adore these days! It's called Merlin and it's like shazam for birds. [google play store]

As you record audio around you, it will listen for bird song and create a list. Under each bird there's also clear example recordings of their songs, cries, chirps, etc.

I'm slowly starting to recognise some birds by their song!! It's making me want to listen and look closely whenever I'm out instead of hiding in headphones or zoning out. Makes me feel grounded and connected to nature in a way, however shallow the connection.

Besides that and entirely not what the creators went for but it also feels like a collection game which may be what the pull is for me haha. ornithology pokedex bc pokemonGO is not enough.

watching rick beat the ever-living-shit of prime like that felt so real. each swing and hit felt visceral and caused me to flinch each time. watching an actual person take out their frustration, rage, turmoil, and grief in such a way stun-locked me.

seeing him lose his resolve felt so personal to where i felt like i was trespassing on something or watching something i shouldn't have been. it really emphasized to me that rick really is just a jaded, sad old man that's been stricken with ghastly amounts of grief and self-hatred for decades. he's pathetic and he knows that!

and to me he didn't look satisfied or content, he looked... gone. dissociated. like just so checked out. he looked so lost and dejected which made it worse. listening to prime's monologue and watching rick fully lose himself and see how fragile his mental state really is was so uncomfortable in such a good way.

POND UPDATE

There are at least 2 frogs (i've seen 2 at once right next to each other) but most likely 3 or more

it's not a big pond—maybe like 12 square feet of water surface with various soggy and muddy areas around it. But I've planted a great variety of plants around it and already there are frogs.

It is in an area where water and mud always collected in the yard, downhill from what I suspect is a natural spring. I thought, it wants to be a wetland so bad, why not make it into one?

I think long term it might make kind of a vernal pool environment that is only periodically filled with water, but it seems to drain very little (the soil is heavy clay and there's bedrock 8 inches under the surface in much of the yard—the pond bottom is mostly stone) so maybe I should expand it outwards. Or who knows.

I love watching the mud-daubers fly back and forth from the bank gathering balls of mud to build their nests. I counted 15 skipper butterflies congregated around the edge at once. There are diving beetles everywhere.

Next to the natural spring area, some spikerushes have volunteered. I think the lawn grass may have been outcompeting them previously, but no more. Thrive, you funky little dudes!
