Do Better.
To @habitica staff (and in the interest of notifying Tumblr users who may not have realized anything was happening at all who may want to integrate this knowledge into their understanding of Habitica’s landscape going forward--open letter and all that jazz):
On Tuesday, January 31, you said that conversations in the Tavern had been disruptive and alienating to fellow Habiticans. You directed this at socialites.
So let’s talk about that.
On Monday, January 30, a troll targeted me and others in the Tavern for over two hours before you finally completely put your foot down regarding it.
Except you didn’t. You saw that I had tried to give their story the benefit of the doubt and tried to politely note some problematic phrasings of theirs and you decided sending the convo to PM was okay. Because, IDK, you didn’t see the flags from earlier where they were trying to gaslight me or whatever.
The user tried to strong-arm me into letting them share my words in a TikTok they claimed was about their autistic sibling’s “coping journey” (something I was not keen to be part of considering what I know about the kind of person who is likely to post autism-related things phrased that way). I know you know this because I reported the messages to you and you responded to those flags with clear understanding and took action (I presume a mute but I don’t actually know).
...And then the user took it offsite. They made a post about me on Twitter and by the end of the day I had several flames to fics on my AO3 account. (I “know” this was a tweet despite not having concrete proof because I am choosing to believe the least hostile (even nice at the end of the day) person who commented to my fics and who I was able to reply to and get a reply back from is telling the truth.) I was afraid to check my email for three days straight.
All for something I firmly believe the mods would have put a stop to and evaluated the full situation of far before it could have become that kind of problem. But there are no more mods. Only you.
Do better.
You said that comments posted in an effort to incite a hostile or contentious environment in public spaces in Habitica are unacceptable. You implied that PMs about it are also unacceptable. You directed this at socialites.
So let’s talk about that.
Since December 5, 2022, your treatment of sharing the reasons the mods were gone and why, after their strike and subsequent removal, has made everyone feel like anything they do or say or feel about the decision can’t be discussed without fear of account consequences. That is a hostile environment in public spaces.
In late evening January 31, you--at least temporarily--unhid a post that clearly did not comply with ultimatums you had just laid out in the very same chat, despite receiving reports that it was directly hurtful to other users and violating the ultimatums. There is no clear reason this was done unless it was because it was declared to be okay because its ire was directed only at contributors and not at staff. That is a comment that incites a hostile or contentious environment in public spaces in Habitica.
Between January 31 and February 2, you have muted and even full-on banned people without clear explanation of the things you believe they did wrong, and sometimes with a flimsy, nonsensical, or even nonexistent explanation when you were pressed for one. People are afraid to do anything now lest a staff that is employing increasingly totalitarian consequences to actions that shouldn’t call for consequences that severe prevent them from accessing the site at all. That is a contentious environment.
On January 31, you posted a message to Aspiring Socialites declaring these ultimatums but also suggesting we “do better”. This message, crucially, was describing something that not all socialites did something to cause (I know this because I asked point-blank and you (eventually) answered), but yet its words apparently apply to all socialites. But if that’s true, we can’t all need to “do better” unless you thought we were all “doing worse”--and this was a public message directed to all socialites and not individuals who exhibited behavior you thought to be bad, something I witnessed little to none of, anyway. That is a comment that incites a hostile or contentious environment in public spaces in Habitica.
Do better.
You are making people scared. You are letting people get hurt. Your moderation practices since the mods’ removal have resulted in noticeable changes to chat that have alienated many long-time Habiticans. You don’t seem to even want a community so much as an army of underlings who will never say anything that might challenge you to think about what you’re doing or to reflect on your actions.
As staff, people look to you as examples of what Habitica should be. Do better.

My Ship Unmoors from the Habitica Docks
((Or: Habitica Ban Speedrun, Sub 1 Hour, Luigi Citrusella Wins (Loses?) By Doing Absolutely Nothing (or at least nothing that would have warranted that kind of response from staff, seriously)
There was an anonymous asker on my blog in Feburary saying I should voice my concerns about Habitica on Habitica, and I wanted to let them know: I did it!
If you’re curious what I wrote, it was the following (slightly modified, as the character count my draft doc gave me didn’t match Habitica’s character count logic so it was over character limit):
So when I originally came up with the idea of making this post I thought I'd frame it like a two-weeks' notice for a job, a little ha-ha nod to years of my serving wench moniker… but then as time went on, it didn't feel right. So I'll just lay it all out.
I can't do this anymore. I can't continue being complicit with a staff that:
makes decisions that seem retaliatory and then disallows anyone from discussing it or their feelings surrounding it, even if other people remark on a way the community changed from it that they're confused about
uses alts (scroll to bottom and show the last images in the set) to artificially inflate staff post like counts to make them seem better-received than they are
fearmongers Socialites by implying they are witnessing bannable behavior and encouraging it
thinks that being anti-censorship is a personal attack
strongarms users into silence (but only tells Socialites, for some reason) so rudely that several users (including myself) asked for their tiers to be removed
changes the community guidelines so that if they discipline you in any way they're not required to tell you what you did wrong, so it's possible for you to be blindsided by a disciplinary action and have no idea what you did
This post isn't "relitigating" anything because litigation in a fair court implies the possibility for more than one outcome. I'm just sharing how I feel, which is something that used to be allowed. However, given that I'm sharing feelings that are something other than Shiny Happy People about something that staff would rather enforce a forgetting-of by silencing those who also want to move on but needed to work through their feelings about it, I'm sure staff won't feel the same way. I know from the fact that several people have been banned for saying anything that there's only one thing that will happen when I post this.
Since staff are more interested in throwing their admin toys at people who disagree with their actions than, you know, actually talking things out other than behind closed doors, I'm sure that this will end with me being muted or banned. I've made my peace with that, which is why my name is what it is.
I've made this post because, as a Socialite, I feel it's of grave importance that people have complete, accurate information to work off and with little to no word from staff this is the most complete info I can share in 3000 characters. My penchant for sharing my knowledge hasn't changed just because my tiers are gone; I've just accepted that there are far better, more ethical places to volunteer one's time. I'm sorry staff don't seem to feel the same way.
Thank you. For everything.
Staff liked it so much that this happened within 20 minutes!
Tumblr media
(That’s a chat mute, which I am familiar with the basic look of because I once (twice, actually) asked for a temporary one specifically to get screenshots of it for fact-finding science reasons.)
And then within the hour, more or less without me doing anything additional on the level of warranting it, this happened!
Tumblr media
(That is a full site ban. I cannot use the site at all. Very interesting that this kind of thing took 20 minutes to an hour to receive this level of action but I saw full-on (real) community guidelines violations sit unhidden for hours in the same chat as recently as a week ago.)
I expected this sort of thing to happen (to the point that I prepared and got basically all my pertinent user info just in case, but I hope it’s clear now why I waited until I no longer had commitments tying me to the site, and why I didn’t expect posting it to the site to be effective at changing anything. I’m not so much mad as disappointed at this point. The kind of quiet anger I reserve for a very select few things in my life, as it were.
Except for the part I didn’t mention yet where they also hid a post in a guild I owned (The Crystal Gems guild) that contained important information for the guild members regarding a temporary leader I was assigning because even if I hadn’t gotten banned I’d planned to stop using the site tonight either way, which meant a following post by someone else suddenly lacked important context and might have made it look like the search for a more permanent leader I’d asked about a few days prior was over. Someone had to clarify in my stead what that meant because the context I’d already provided was suddenly missing. That makes me angry because it’s even more needlessly petty than the reaction to the quoted post above that I knew they’d be upset with.
TL;DR: I finally posted about the state of Habitica on Habitica. Staff didn’t take it well and nothing is changing. -_-’
Screenshot of the version of the post that actually was posted to (and hidden on) Habitica under the cut. It does not have alt text but is nearly identical to the block quote above so that will serve as its image description. I’ll add here that my name had been changed from “citrusella, the serving wench💔” to “💔 the serving wench quits 💔” and my avatar is shrouded in black and red under a dark rain cloud (it’s been like that for months, but only because when other people started getting banned I changed my avatar into something I was comfortable with it being “buried” in, in case I got banned suddenly).))

Habitica ideas I had that never saw the light of day
((Because of stuff like what's described in this post, for context as to why I'm not doing it. Was originally going to be a longer post that was sort of a debrief retrospective on my overall feelings on the situation now that it's not heat of the moment with high-running emotions... but I'm just gonna do a bulleted list of tools I never finished that were going to be kinda cool but now no one will be able to use ever
How-bout-it-ca: An idea I never even started coding which would have picked a random task from your tasks and showed it to you. I mostly didn't ever start on this because other tools included part of its envisioned functionality. ...And also at the time I was bad at API. Shhhhhh. (Abandoned: Stopped thinking about it in like 2018 or 2019?)
Pearl Points Steven Universe CSS style: A CSS style that I actually coded a lot of (both pre and post 2017 redesign) but never felt like finishing because I was worried about intellectual property implications (Abandoned: Sometime in like 2020 or so was the last time I touched it)
Image/icon-supported Habitica CSS style: A CSS style I envisioned that would allow interface text to have communication/AAC style icons near it or instead of the text, to make the interface more understandable for users who understand pictures better than text. I got through a proof-of-concept coding session using emoji and didn't follow up with more coding. Idea was to have freely-licensed icon sets built in but also allow an option for users to use their own images. (Abandoned: Sometime in 2022)
"50 Shades of Habitica" CSS style: Jokingly mentioned the title of my draft file to Lemoness and was told I couldn't take that name live even though she thought it was funny. Named that was because it was going to be a CSS style that allowed every color on the entire website to be customized but never really got off the ground because the website was changing enough of the time to make it hard to keep up (this is also why I don't have an alternate name other than the disallowed name of my draft file). (Abandoned: 2017 or 2018)
InnVoices: A script that would have checked if you were in the inn each night and charged you a "fee" to stay there (with optional "stay in but pay all your money" or "get kicked out either with or without casting skills or using healing potions first" options for if you didn't have enough money). Script version was mostly done and I was considering going back to the Tasker version and fixing the issues that had necessitated me learning Google Apps Script JS in the first place when all the Stuff happened. (Abandoned: Stopped coding 2022, removed evidence of existing code logic from internet 2023)
Forbidden Forest for Habitica: An Android app coded in Kotlin that would have allowed users to do some things coded into the API but not coded into the official clients, like assigning task aliases for API use (or things not coded into the official Android client specifically, like rebirth), without having to understand much about how to use the API themselves. Was still hashing out what to include but was about to test out adding a basic API call when the Stuff happened. (Abandoned: 2022)
Might edit to add more if more come to mind (these are the ones that never saw the light of day, not anything I decided to take down in February).
*plays "My Heart Will Go On" or something*
Maybe now I will probably never post about Habitica again on Tumblr. Maybe.))

((Wrote another Habitica fic about the current state of Pirate Cove last night. It’s a really short poem!
There Will Be No White Flag Above My Door
I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder, Or return to where we were... But I will go down with this ship, And I won't put my hands up and surrender...
(Why not keep the Dido theme the other fic had? It's even sort of about boats!)
A poetic ode to the GuildBot.
Shades of venting but really it’s just more mournful?))

((What’s this?! A fanfiction that is not about Steven Universe? Quelle surprise! (I meant to post this post about it last night when I did the rest of my fic hyping but it was late, okay?)
It’s a Habitica fanfic! (Well. Vent fic? It’s hard to sort. DX)
And I Want to Thank You for Giving Me the Best Day of My Life...
My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why I got out of bed at all. The morning rain clouds up my window, and I can't see at all. And even if I could, it'd all be gray, but your picture on my wall: it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad...
(I swear I had a real title and summary that actually had to do with the fic contents in mind but Dido entered my brain and willed it to be this instead.)
A pirate and an elf realize they're not all that different from one another.
I know I joke in the summary about it willing itself to be a Dido lyric but I think that song decided to pop into my head because in many ways it encapsulates how I’ve been feeling this week because of some things: general melancholy, feeling a bit like a house is coming down, maybe even the vibe of even if I’d had work my coworkers would have implied that I might not last the day... but also there are people around I care about who remind me that maybe it’s not so bad.
What are the “some things” that have caused those feelings this week? Read below (these are also in the fic note because they provide context for why I wrote the fic so feel free to ignore if you’re reading the fic):
If you don't actually know the media in question: Habitica is a gamified task management website that treats your life like a role-playing game. For the purposes of this context explanation, one thing it's imperative you know is that it has social areas like guilds (subject based chat), which can require moderation to stay in tip-top shape.
On Thursday, December 1, 2022, Habitica's entire then-current volunteer mod team (8 people in total) went on strike. There are a few reasons for this which I could write directly here, but since it’d take too much space, I'll share this Reddit link which discusses what happened in the next bullet and has some info and links from a few of the mods themselves about the strike and surrounding stuff in the comments. The short of it is that there were disagreements regarding how the staff treats volunteers and contributors.
On Monday, December 5, 2022, all 8 of Habitica's mods unanimously quit. (Some sources phrase this as "taking moderation in-house".)
The demotions (and some surrounding events) have left places like Pirate Cove (a guild for making sure guilds have active owners, among other guild related things) and Elven Grove (a guild for making sure challenges close in a timely manner/have active owners), among other places, in limbo. (Other things, too, but these are the ones that are relevant to the story.) These things are in limbo because the aspects of them that required more powers than a normal user were previously handled by one or more members of the volunteer mod team and now can only be handled by paid staff. This limbo is what "inspired" this fic.
I am a tier 7 socialite on Habitica, which (in short) means I'm really good at volunteering to help people. (I have other contribution titles too, but I've had that one the longest.) I have also been a bringer of challenges to the Elven Grove for mods to deal with so I have some degree of closeness to this subject.
...This is just short enough I don’t think it needs to employ a read-more cut. (If you feel like it IS a bit long for your dash, please let me know!) A bit longer than my typical fic announcement posts, but I felt it worth sharing the context for what had me feeling down.))

((The Habitica April Fool turned all pets to fruits and vegetables on @habitica yesterday! So I took a quest pet along (the base egg) and dressed myself for a food-themed day with a pie hat, carrot sword, and plum shield on an apple orchard background!
Then I had fun with CSS and tried to code the fruit pets into a user style for use later--that’s what the second picture is because I changed to a different coordinate on the sheet to make sure the rest of my code was working. o.o
Then I went completely hog-wild and for fun I tested out CSS that makes the flower transformation item, Shiny Seeds, change users into their class’s fruit from April 2014 instead of flowers like it usually does. The last two images are the mage and warrior flavors of that done to my test account!
...I feel like I’m not supposed to have this much unbridled fun doing something as dry as coding. XD))

((Some avatars for the inverted prank the April Fool played on people this April 1 on Habitica!
Apparently I am one with the darkness, with my inverted ghost jack-o-lantern and ghost cactus. XD (And also I thought the red cactopus felt more octopus-like than usual? 0_o)
Also, since I was playing around with testing CSS... as I do every year... to keep this alive all year long (and extend it to mounts, which it didn’t officially apply to), I’d be remiss if I didn’t include this bonus not-officially-viewable (and not third-party viewable unless I upload that style) inverted phoenix water phoenix Lapis constructed so she could ride it! ((Entry for the Habitica April Fool’s challenge! Dunno what to call my own dessert self, but it’s me and my dessert pet! Yum!
Didn’t get to do CSS shenanigans like I’ve done the past couple years this year (both for computer issue reasons and because I was busy making vegetable soup today o.o). I dunno what I would have done (turned the person into a bigger version of the pet? giant desserts? replaced them with dessert-like equipment items for fun? IDK), but I was hoping to try something, at least...
Oh, well. Maybe I’ll use this extended time off to update existing CSS styles if my computer stabilizes... Or if I jump onto the backup computer nearby...))
