may get jumped for this but i kinda love NiF2 a lot and i genuinely think it's a fantastic sequel, which a lot of people seem to disagree with (which is totally chill we can have differing opinions y'all), but i really like it?? the production value, it's boldness in greatly trying to differentiate itself from it's predecessor and a big, healthy dose of familial love is never a bad thing (and perhaps why i love it so much so far). saw someone say that the first forty episodes are a slog to get through (which greatly confused me bc the show has fifty episodes and you were still disliking it by ep 40? the way i would've just quit, chile) and although i'm only thirteen episodes in i think it's great! i do have one or two problems though; pingjang is an observant and quick-witted protagonist but sometimes it feels as if he's only being intelligent for the sake of the plot. i know he isn't stupid, but he has been shown so far to he a very emotionally driven character unlike mei changsu (of whom was very logic driven imo), so him suddenly being very astute and clever at times takes me off a little bit considering how rash he has been so far. plus, the ending of NiF1 wasn't good in my opinion; for such a well thought out, deeply intricate show, the ending felt very lazy, weak and rushed, and left me with a roster of unanswered questions that i thought NiF2 would. . .it didn't. this was, of course, grossly disappointing. additionally, even though we spent the entirety of season one trying to crown jingyan, we haven't even seen him rule or heard of what his rule was like? honestly, i feel like this show before anything else, should have tied up the loose ends that season one failed to. however, i'm still excited to see how this show goes! I have a lot of predictions (some that i hope come to fruition and some that i really hope that don't) and i'm intrigued to see what happens next!

the funny thing is that i LOVE nirvana in fire 2 and i cried so much watching it BUT i never finished it. the reason is i literally do *not* care about pingjing outside of the 'pingzhang's little brother' context. i can't believe they had so many wonderful wonderful characters and decided to focus on him like even with pingzhang gone i'd love to see more of tingsheng feizhan meng xue or the emperor instead but nope they were all gone almost immediately after pingzhang died rip

Q: How are you feeling? A: *coughing up blood* Never felt better in my life
Q: Are you dying of a deadly disease and/or are fatally wounded? A: Of course not
Q:Is there a world-shattering secret (about my life) that you aren't telling me? A: Of course not
Q: ...are you lying to me? A: ...
Hello everyone and welcome to the Lying Liar Who Lies Poll! This character would probably claim they were fine while literally on their death bed. Or they might have fun lying to people for fun and profit. Perhaps they just can't help it anymore - if they don't lie at least once a day they go into withdrawal.
Looking at the list of candidates, it might even be all three...
Vote to find out who's the most egregious liar in cdrama (affectionate)! Propaganda, call out posts, and write-in candidates welcome!

Chapter 118
The Chen family, Chang Song Hall.
The men of the Chen family were all present, and sitting at the top of the table was the Chen family head, Chen Jian.
Chen Jian is nearly seventy years old and had long been dying of old age. He wore a grey robe, and his hair, which was white, was pulled back in a bun on top of his head and held in place by a bamboo hairpin.
At first glance, he looked like only an old man, but the light in his eyes shone brightly as he spoke, and it was clear that this man was unusual.
At this moment he looked quite grave, his eyes half closed, leaning back in his chair, as if he was thinking about something.
Below him, both the Grand Master Chen and the Second Master Chen did not speak, but the Third Master Chen and the Fourth Master Chen kept talking about the current situation in the court.
The third Chen master, Chen Pingzhang, had been away and had only returned to the capital in recent days; he had come back to the capital to report on his duties, and the other was intending to stay in the capital. But at that time, the Chen family was at the top of the storm and it was inappropriate to make too many moves, so he temporarily used the excuse of being sick to recuperate at home, actually waiting to see what the Chen family's next move should be.
After all, the Chen family is one and the same, so it is all for the best and all for the worst.
Chen Pingwu, the second lord of the Chen family, had not taken up his post as a fifth-ranking official since he was made Marquis of Cheng'en, but it was an idle post in itself, so it did not really matter whether he did it or not.
The original plan of the Chen family was for the eldest Chen Pingwen to fill in the cabinet after Chen Jian's retirement, but Chen Jian never did so, so the matter was delayed.
Chen Jian, who is nearing the end of his life, should have retired a long time ago, and has been delaying the matter for some years because of the crown prince's ascendancy to the throne, but now he has not retired for the future of the Chen family.
After all, Emperor Jianping had not yet appointed a crown prince, and the Chen family had not yet produced a crown prince grandson, so how could Chief Minister Chen be at ease with his duties?
" It seems to me that His Majesty has no intention of creating a crown prince now." Chen Pingwen suddenly said.
His words brought Chen Pingzhang and Chen Pingqian's scattered remarks to a halt, and Chen Jian opened his eyes. As Chen Pingzhang and Chen Pingqian went to look at their father, Chief Minister Chen stroked his long beard and brought his tea up again to take a sip before saying, "The eldest is right, His Majesty indeed has no intention of creating a crown prince now."
There was a vague sigh in his voice, and an extraordinarily twilight and vicissitudes that belonged to the wear and tear of the wheel of years.
"If His Majesty really intended to create a crown prince, he would not have failed to respond to the calls of the court so far. The appointment of a crown prince is not a trivial matter, it is a matter of national importance, and as Duo's health is indeed weak, it is no wonder that His Majesty is hesitant."
"But Duo is the legitimate and the eldest, so if we don't appoint him, should we appoint the second prince?" Chen Pingqian, the fourth lord, said, with a sense of incredulity and laughter.
He had spoken the truth, which the Chen family had been pondering, but none of them were willing to speak it out.
Why did the Empress repeatedly press for it, and didn't it just confirm this statement?
"No matter what, this crown prince position must be Duo'er's." Chen Pingzhang said. Otherwise the Chen family had worked so hard for so many years, conscientious for what exactly, and what had he been out in the field for? Wasn't it because he didn't want to arouse suspicion and deliberately create the attitude that the Chen family was honest and peaceful.
The reason why Chen Pingwu has been doing nothing is that he has no ambition and does not care about mundane affairs.
The Chen family's path has actually been set for a long time. If one day Old Master Chen retires, it will definitely be Chen Pingwen who will take his place, and even if he cannot be the chief minister, a cabinet leader is inevitable.
Chen Pingzhang was released, Chen Pingqian was the youngest and remained in the Hanlin Academy, where he could advance and retreat, while the second house had a crown princess.
The second house has a crown princess. After all, the Chen family already has a first minister in the Chen family, and the next step up is that the Son of Heaven also comes from the Chen family, which does not mean conspiracy to rebel, but that the Son of Heaven has the bloodline of the Chen family.
"His Majesty has been making a lot of moves in the court lately, and he is looking at Wang in a different light in the cabinet, and I am afraid that there is an intention to let him take over my position. If we then encourage the courtiers to install Duo'er as Crown Prince, it would be a bit too conspicuous."
Chen Jian also said something else that he had not said, he had already made it known that he wanted to retire, and he had done so for many years.
It was also inappropriate for the Crown Prince to have a great-grandfather who was a high ranking minister, which would have given him the appearance of being a powerful relative. As a veteran of the imperial court for many years, Chen Jian knew all this, and even what his sons did not understand, he also understood.
So now an awkward situation has developed, as long as the Jianping emperor does not appoint the crown prince, he will not dare to retire, and as long as he does not retire, the Jianping emperor may not appoint the crown prince.
What he was pondering now was this 'possibility', and as for the words of his sons that the second prince might be crowned, Chen Jian actually did not hear them at all.
His Majesty's character was such that he would either not crown the prince, or, if he did, he could go beyond Duo'er and crown the second prince.
All this had occurred to Chen Pingwen as well, and he glanced at his father, hesitating for a moment, not letting out the words he wanted to ask.
On the other hand, Chen Pingqian and Chen Pingzhang were talking about the possibility that His Majesty would appoint the second prince, and inevitably, they talked about the extremely favoured Consort Su, who was known to everyone.
When it comes to Su Guifei, it is inevitable that Empress Chen will be mentioned.
Chen Pingqian also felt that the fact that the crown prince could not be crowned had something to do with Empress Chen's lack of favour, so he could not help but complain, "Second brother, you should also let your second sister-in-law go to the palace more often to teach the empress, if she could learn a fifth of her methods, she might not be in this situation now."
If she could have learnt a fifth of her skills, she might not be in this situation now." The words had a flirtatious connotation, but Chen Pingwu acted as if he had not heard them, and only when Chen Pingqian called out to him again did he come back to his senses.
"Second brother, what are you thinking about, I didn't even hear you when I spoke to you."
Chen Pingwu hid a smile and said, "I just recently got a painting ......"
Chen Pingqian interrupted him and said, "All right, you don't talk about the painting, now is not the time to enjoy the painting, wait for the day when brother is free to accompany second brother to enjoy the painting, now talking about the Empress, you should also let second sister-in-law go to the palace more often to teach the Empress, otherwise why would she be suppressed by a thin horse."
It was the first time they had ever been hit by a stone, but unfortunately the men in the Chen family were not concerned about it and let the women take care of it. But it was a small and insignificant thing that they didn't care about that has now become a big mistake.
It was a mistake to overlook it.
But how can there be so many such things in the world?
This is the kind of thing that can affect the overall situation of the court, and it is inevitable that it cannot be discussed overnight, and Chen Pingwen has always wanted to talk to his father, so the meeting here in Changsong Hall soon dispersed.
Before leaving, Chen Jian explained that his sons should be careful with their words, and that they would rather not do anything than make a mistake at this juncture.
On the other hand, Chen Pingwu returned to Linbi Xuan and sat withered for a long time, deep in thought.
Chen Cai kept a quiet vigil by his side.
The study was quiet, with only the occasional sound of a candlestick fluttering.
"Chen Cai, do you think I should tell Father about Yuan'er."
It was obvious that Chen Pingwu had been thinking about this matter for so long.
Chen Cai hesitated and thought for a moment before saying, "Is it not a little too hasty to determine such a big matter based only on the words reported by a palace maid? Of course, this is only my own opinion, and it is up to Your Lordship to decide what will happen."
"She looks so much like Liu'er, especially her eyes, which I thought she did when I first saw her. The jade piece is a family heirloom, and after she gave birth to Yuan'er, she had her name carved on it and hung it on her body."
Chen Cai still felt rash, the point was that the matter was too big, he could almost predict what kind of shock it would cause in the Chen family if this matter broke out.
If he got it wrong, it would be a joke then.
"Why don't you have someone copy out the diagram of that jade and hand it out to the palace for your lordship to see, and then your lordship can make a decision?"
It was not that Chen Cai was too careful, but the Chen family seemed to be harmonious, but in fact it was not a monolithic family, especially with the Crown Princess becoming Empress and Chen Pingwu being made a marquis, the second house had inevitably risen to the top. Although it is not yet apparent on the surface, some of the subtleties of the household are already showing contradictions.
Chen Pingwu does not care for mundane affairs and is not interested in the affairs of the house, but as far as Chen Cai knows, the First Lady and the Second Lady have fought several times, both explicitly and implicitly, in the recent past. This matter may not affect Chen Pingwu, but it has a great impact on the First and Second Houses. After all, the First and Second Houses have their own children and concubines, and sooner or later it will affect the brothers Chen Pingwen and Chen Pingwu.
Chen Cai decided to report these matters to the master as soon as this matter was over. In fact, he knew that if the matter on Chen Pingwu's mind was not resolved, given his character, he would not have his hands free to deal with the affairs of the house.
Chen Pingwu also felt that Chen Cai's proposal was good, so he decided to send word to the palace to have a copy of the plan made.
The Second Lady had to take care of this, so Chen Pingwu went to the Yunxia courtyard.
The Second Lady was a little surprised by her husband's arrival, but she was happy to see him dressed and washed up before the couple went to bed.
It was then that Chen Pingwu told Second Lady that she should go to the palace to see the Empress, saying that the Empress was alone in the palace and that as her own mother, Second Lady should go and see her more often.
When Second Lady thought about it, it had been a while since she had visited the Empress, and it was also because the First Lady had been at odds with her lately, so she had been concerned with fighting with the First Lady in the Palace. But the second wife would not tell her husband about these matters between women, for if she did, he would certainly have to be concerned about his brother's face and ask her to respect the First Lady.
She didn't say that the First Lady was ignorant for bringing her newly widowed daughter to live in the house before her mourning period was over, but she complained that if she hadn't given the Crown Princess position to the Second House, her daughter wouldn't have been a widow and it would have been her daughter who was now the Empress.
Although the First Lady did not say this explicitly, the Second Lady would have thought it, pointing out that who could not see that she meant what she said!
Now that she is in the palace, she is not the same as before. She used to be the prince consort's own mother, but the prince consort is not really the master of the palace, but now she is the empress's own mother, and when she enters the palace, it is a sight to behold.
The Second Lady decided to go to the palace tomorrow, so that she could be angry with the mother and daughter.
The next day, the Second Mistress was engaged in the matter of entering the palace. As the Marquess of Cheng'en and the Empress's mother, she did not need to hand in a permit in advance to enter the palace.
In the past, she could only take one person with her to the palace, but now she has no such scruples, but the Second Mistress is used to using senior people.
Now that Liu mama is older, although she has not yet been promoted, she is not as bothered by everything as she used to be, and several of the maids around the Second Mistress, Amber and Jade, who have been used, have become daughters-in-law and are still working beside her.
Amber is a steady girl, and the Second Lady is used to her, so she took her along with her two steady little maids. Going to the palace was not the same as being in the house, so the Second Lady was very cautious.
There were two carriages in total, one with the Second Lady and the other with some maids. As she was getting into the vehicle, one of the maids noticed that Amber hadn't gotten in yet, so she looked around for her and saw Amber talking to Chen Cai from afar.
"Sister Amber, it's just waiting for you. That's Chief Steward Chen from the Second Master's side, isn't it, what does the Second Master have to explain?"
Amber gave the maid a look and, without picking anything out, said, "Second Master has something to explain to Madam."
At this point the maid also realised that she had said the wrong thing and was busy not squeaking.

Xiao PingZhang is the Li Shang We Deserve
If you are like me (asian american, millennial, former disney ho on main), you may have been tentatively excited by the prospect of the forthcoming live action Mulan, featuring Actual Asian Actors. You may also have been super bummed when it was revealed that the new film axed best dude ever and all around BAE Captain Li Shang.
If you are actually me you may have even bitched to a friend about this, and what a shame it is, and how you even know a GREAT actor they could have cast. A perfect actor. In fact, he recently performed a role where.... wait.
So if you like, strap in for the top three reasons why Nirvana In Fire II’s Xiao PingZhang is the Li Shang we deserve, and also just the BEST.
Reason 1: An Impressive Military Lineage
Tumblr media
Li Shang is the son of a general, and himself a commander of troops. Xiao Pingzhang is the son of THE general. He is Da Liang’s first and best line of defense, ready to sacrifice it all for family and country.
Tumblr media
Reason 2: The Most Badass Wife
Tumblr media
This one is obvious. Do you know who else fights good? Meng Qianxue! The love of Xiao Pingzhang’s life! Here to kick ass, take names, protect her husband, and shepherd her little brother-in-law through life.

Reason Three: THOSE ABS THO

I’m an absolute genius that took 11 episodes of NiF 2 to remember why Jingyan was only being referred to as “the previous emperor.” And not his name or regnal name. Lightning fast mind, mine.
Also…what even is the timeline for this show? I’m trying to logic out how long the current emperor has been ruling based on how old he and Tingsheng look and I am drawing a blank. Something about the Donghai sisters coming 20 years ago, Consort Shu died seven years ago. The crown prince is ten. There are officials that were there during Jingyan’s reign… Would it kill the scriptwriters to use a number besides 20?
I know according to the book maybe, Jingyan only ruled for fifteen years. How long was he the crown prince? I don’t know. When was ye ol future emperor born? Probably super soon after the wedding, maybe? Tingsheng was like 12 to 14ish at the events of NiF. I’m pretty sure he was old enough to be in the military during the epilogue. But Pingzhang says he remembers part of Jingyan’s reign. Tingsheng probably didn’t get married until he was 20…you know what. I don’t care. Everyone lives in a state of flux on the spacetime continuum, everywhere and nowhere at once. Time is a ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff. I’m not doing a freaking algebraic equation to try and figure out the potential ages of these characters based off of subtitles that do not give me the corresponding Chinese to investigate further.
