personal project time...?

so here’s my deal. I wake up at 6am on a Sunday morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed, 45 minutes before my alarm despite the fact that I stayed up too late. It’s a day with no morning farm work so that means personal projects. My brain instantly starts into a scene from chapter 12 of my work in progress, spinning together everything from dialogue to fight choreography like a spider on coke. This is normal though, so I take it easy, pet puppy tummies, toss the piggos some hay, check the ‘gram. When I’m up I microwave some coffee and walk it over to my desk.

But wait--

The fan lights flicker. In the predawn black of the picture window I catch the wide whites of my eyes.

I said Sundays were video editing days. I made that a rule. I have to edit the video today or it’ll never get done.

But... the scene... it’s right there. This is free time. MY TIME.

Video. You said VIDEO!

Just an hour of writing though? I never have enough time to write!

No no no noooooo this happens every time!

Well we can’t do both at once so just decide!

Hey it’s me, your comic. Avoid this problem altogether. Work on me for once.

Oh hey?! Piano here--you haven’t practiced in a week, just sayin’. Y no olvides estudiar español.

--I’ve slipped into a familiar downward spiral. I’m a stuck record. I’m screaming into a pillow. I’m adding whisky to my coffee. I’m writing a freaking tumblr post.

This is how I freeze. This is how I fail to finish what I started. Right here. It happens every day. --And the trouble is apart from telling myself, “Stop being such a twit,” I have no idea how to fix this. (That hasn’t worked, by the way. The twit thing.) Sometimes there are lucky days when I skip a groove and fall right in to obsessive focus mode for 8 hours straight, but that’s not healthy either. At the end of the day there’s always something that didn’t get done.
