#97 🎬 Hard Eight (1996): Primeiro filme do Paul Thomas Anderson, e o cara já manda um filme muito bom. É sobre um senhor que parece simplesmente querer fazer algo de bom (mas sem exageros) para alguns desconhecidos que estão passando por algum momento difícil na vida. Claro, se o filme fosse somente isso, seria muito básico e sem graça e então instintivamente a gente fica esperando o gatilho que vai fazer a trama andar. E demora... Normalmente lá pelos 30min sem nada acontecer eu já começo a pesar se vale a pena continuar, mas aqui foi diferente. Nada especial aconteceu até a metade e eu ainda estava engajado no filme. Apesar da trama não ter iniciado de fato, acho que permaneci ligado porque tudo é muito bem feito. Atores bons performando bem, tomadas diferentes, diálogo interessante e inteligente, uma musiquinha de boa, e bem aos poucos vão se somando os elementos do enredo. Exatamente na metade o pau pega e aí parece que não vai dar tempo de resolver direito esse filme. O protagonista toma decisões que não fazem sentido com o que a gente ACHAVA que sabia dele, e então me preocupei porque complicou bastante a história. É metade sem nada e metade cheia de coisa. Apesar das alusões a jogos e cassino, não é nem um pouco sobre isso o filme. É sobre ajudar, se entender, motivos obscuros e passados ainda mais. A segunda metade me faz pensar que poderia ter sido mais longo, porém não estragou a experiência. Com tanto filme mais excitante por aí, é difícil recomendar Hard Eight para qualquer um. Tem que ser muito fã de cinema ou do PTA. Ou ter Prime e já ter visto tudo. I think #LarryDavid would be great as a Julian, but I also think #PhilipBakerHall could do a lot with the character. The caption title is a #AndyWarhol quote & the art is from #artschoolconfidential . . Julian Maximillian Schimmel liked to think he held court in the Art History Dept. at the College simply because he felt he was the most “relevant.” Recipient of a Pulitzer for criticism, he loved to skewer the art world & the NYC art scene, but had blinders on w/respect to how his own hubris & ego undermined his enterprise. He was self-deprecating, but in that awkward way where you feel he’s being disingenuous. He was an adjunct for years, but was offered a Lectureship after his Pulitzer. . . Art History was a shotgun wedding of art history, critical theory, & curatorial studies. Unlike Columbia or NYU, there were no humanities rock stars in the dept. Julian was the Art Critic for the New York Spectator & his shtick was “woke white guy,” which loosely translates to “left liberal urbanite who extols the virtues of multiculturalism, but wants a PC pass when his crass piss takes break Wheaton’s law.” He had amassed huge followings on Twitter & Instagram, including many artists & s smaller gallerists. . . JM started to appear in films as the “bad boy” art critic & even had a stylist. His signature cliches of the art world were initially amusing, as they were wry observations that actually transpire at gallery openings. Over time, what became obvious was a snarky, passive aggressive figure who was starting to believe that he was actually making art better & criticism relevant again. His tongue-in-cheek MARF (Make Art Relevant Forever) over time was stripped of irony. Of course, there was that time when he crossed the line & everyone hit the proverbial back button… . .
