Live Commentary on Hammer's Phantom of the Opera (1962) Starring Herbert Lom
Well Herbert Lom has top billing, so already this is an improvement on 1943
MICHAEL GOUGH IS HERE! I REPEAT. MICHAEL GOUGH IS HERE!
That armchair upholstery is dope
So this is where the mid-show body drop comes from
Ooo yikes, Michael Gough is a creep
Okay this raoul stand-in is really sweet so far. I kinda like im
I generally object to rat-catcher antics, but as this is Patrick Troughton, I'll allow it
Shouldn't the mask serve to make him *less* frightening?
Ah yes! Toccata and Fugue in D Minor! Iconic! Unless I'm mistaken this is the film responsible for associating this piece forever with the Phantom.
Is this where the throne comes from too?!
He slapped her! I'm detracting points-- he's not a great teacher
This is not at all interested in being Phantom of the Opera, but as its own story I'm very into it
This opera is pretty amazing
Overall, I would call this an improved remake of the 1943 film ,since it borrowed so heavily from the backstory. But it really improved upon it by fleshing out the Phantom and letting him be a character. The story makes sense, the leads are likeable and its a sympathetic portrayal of the Phantom. Like I said, its not at all Leroux's story, but as its own film I very much give this my seal of approval, I really enjoyed this.
PHANTOM KILL TOTAL: 1

Ratcatcher: I could let you have 'em both for tuppence, sir. They make a lovely pie, you know. Harry: Um. We're vegetarians. Ratcatcher: Pity.

I need a rank of your favorite to most hated version of Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. From the original book to the latest adaptations.
Hey anon! Okay, I admit that I found your ask a little weird. I mean, why would you NEED my rank for The Phantom of the Opera?! You sounded quite demanding, if I'm being honest.
On the other hand, if you're just another curious phan who wants to know me better, I just warn you that I didn't watch or read all Phantom adaptations, so some of my opinions may be a little hasty. But, anyway, here it goes:
1- ALW's Musical/2004 Movie Adaptation
2- 1990's Miniseries
3- Gaston Leroux's Novel
4- 1925 Movie
5- Susan Kay's Phantom
6- 1943/1962 Movies
7- MaZM Game Version
8- 1989 Movie
9- Dario Argento's Movie
I didn't include Phantom of the Paradise because I barely knew anything about this movie (I only know it was directed by Brian de Palma and mixes other literature classics like The Picture of Dorian Gray and Faust). Same goes for the Yeston/Kopit's musical. I know the 1990 version is based on it (without the musical part tho) but, apart from this information, I'm not very familiar with this specific take on the story.
So yeah... that's it. Hope I have given you a satisfactory answer 😘

Ratings for the 1962 phantom aren't great apparently but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I liked how this one didn't try to put a romantic bent on Christine and the Phantoms relationship since I don't think it's a necessary element for an adaptation. The costuming wasn't as beautiful as 1925 or 1943 but there were a couple standouts. Gotta say the henchman character threw me for a loop but after finding out he saved Phantom/Professor Petrie and then lived with him in the sewers for several years I just assume he was in love the guy. His love language was murder btw which was fun. Petrie's background pre-phantom was another great addition. Nice seeing something more specific considering the other two left a lot up in the air as to why he acts the way he does and his history. Anyway, tomorrow is 1989, which features Robert Englund :) it apparently sucks ass but idc I'll have fun either way

i have ideas for some poto rewrite mysteries and one of them was a little mystery about the 1873 salle la peletier fire, but i’ve turned it into something so much more! ;)
christine is spooked af when erik tells her about the ernest legend (around halloween time!) and her fear grows when mysterious things start happening, things that aren’t the opera ghost’s fault. throw in a mysterious sound in the water cellar corridor that clearly doesn’t belong to erik and a newspaper article about a woman’s death by fire in ‘73 and you’ve got yourself a haunting question... could ernest be real? :o
while christine is figuring that out, she decides to perform a small part in the latest opera. the only problem is that her song is a duet that has alike actresses and no one else sounds like her... no one except everyone’s fave rouge-wearing, romance-loving, curtsy-enjoying, ghost-appearing demiboy! ;D
...who sounds a lot like christine ;)
after some vague threatening from the opera ghost, erik is now luciana petrie, the twin of mira petrie! he gets to sing with christine as a girl and it’s awesome ^_^
what’s not awesome is... CARLOTTA ESPINOZA IS BACK BISHES >:)
her fiance is locked up for trying to kill the phantom of the opera and her heart was too, but 3 months later, she’s ready to sing again! too bad christine’s still here...
but wait! why are there two christines? who in the world is this mysterious tall woman with the golden voice that clearly sounds better than su alteza real y perra? carlotta asks a still costumed erik who he is and he introduces himself as kristin claudin devereux (and she’s very charmed to meet carlotta, dear!)
later, christine asks erik why he did this and he says that carlotta definitely knows about him thanks to piangi spilling the beans during his arrest. besides, she seemed happier when talking to ‘kristin’, a side he and christine have never seen before! not only is this a chance for erik to craft a third persona (after og and mr. e), but it’s a clever way to get to know carlotta...
maybe she’s too earnest compared to how she was before? ;)
