okay, just to weigh in on the Brock discourse, I absolutely remember being blown away when I learned he was 15 because as a kid it was like.. He's 2 heads taller than Ash and Misty, he cooks like a professional chef, has by far the most level head of the group, and he was caring for all of his siblings because his father was hiding out on the outskirts of Pewter City and his mother was... Arceus knows where, add on the fact that he was a Gym Leader which, given the general vibe of the Gym leaders of Kanto, would lean more towards being a legal adult... Everything about him just screamed "mid-late 20's" Heck, I was also shocked to learn Misty was only a year or two older than Ash, since she was a Gym leader too, I just assumed at bare minimum she was 18 and just short for her age.
The assumptions we make as kids, I guess.
Oh super fair! As a kid it’s very easy to look at a character who’s noticeably a little older and be like “ah that’s a grown up”. Brock always read as a teen to me personally but I’ve definitely done that for other cartoon characters for sure
The pokemon world is very different than ours seeing how 10 year olds (even younger than that in the games) are allowed to go out on their own and begin what can only be equated to college level studies in a field they’re interested in. But that’s that cartoon suspension of disbelief you gotta give into. Which is the fun of it imo.
I think, especially now, it should be pretty clear that gym leaders can be any age. Like Ash is a world champion at 10 and Paldea gave us a fucking toddler in the elite four (poppy) which I love LOL
Also! Fun fact, Misty is also 10 in the anime. It’s mentioned only in the jpn version in like the third episode tho hahaha

the gang's all here!!
now we're just missing team rocket 👀
inspired by kianamai's redesigns!!
design notes and lil musings under the cut!
Ash takes a lot from Pokespe in terms of his proportions (at least how the early chapters look in my head) and some cues from the newer movie designs bc i LOVE those, especially the one from Power of Us. So ya I also wanted to give him a big poofy jacket bc of i remember seeing an interpretation of Red's original sprite as a big jacket as well and i think it suits Ash a lot. The style was kinda early One Piece inspired at first, so there's just a big of Luffy in Ash's design, but I think it ended up more Digimon Adventure in the end lmaoo. The nose bandaid's to just elevate that rookie protagonist feel a lil bit + I spent way too long figuring out a new hat symbol lmaoo. He's also 11 in this world to match Red's age in RBY.
Pikachu I just wanted to draw him like Red's Pikachu in Special and give him the lighter coloured tummy from early artwork.
Misty's the biggest departure obvs but I knew I wanted to give her a crop hoodie and take inspo from Kiana Khansmith's Misty and give her the wetsuit as an undersuit. Then the chunky shoes were carried over from Ash with big scrumpled socks bc I thought it made her look a lil more unkempt. The whole goal was the make her more scrappy looking and focus in on the whole "Tomyboyish Mermaid" thing from the games. Also combined her RBY hair with her GSC do by making it a half-up ponytail that I think is very cute. OH and her shoes are Cerulean Gym branded, bc I imagine in this world there's merch for each Gym that the leader wear, so the wet suit and hoodie would be branded too. The hoodie's just cropped above the logo and the wet suit's logo's covered by clothes. She's about 12, so a lil older than Ash and does not let him forget it.
For Psyduck, I wanted to make him a lil fluffier and ugly-duckling + incorporate the three lil sprout hairs he's got a lil more to suit the style. He also has a neck now, you just can't see it super well here. He's just a fluffy lil duck who hurt a lot. Poor lil guy :((
Brock was pretty straight forward, I kinda wanted to reference his Sygna Suit from Masters with pants and a tank top, but made the pants into cargo pants that can be unzipped into shorts (he's thinks its the coolest thing in the world. He wears hiking boots to go over rougher terrain as a Rock-type Leader and hunt for fossils bc I like that aspect of his game characterization so I carried it over here, and he wears an armband with Pewter Gym branding. His tiny lil facial hairs are all he can grow at the moment bc he's still like 15 as usual, but he thinks it makes him look ~Older, Maturer & More Sophisticated~ so refuses to shave it.
I wanted to incorporate a lil more Geode Dude into Geodude so I changed his colours a bit and added parts where the outer layers of the rock have kinda chipped away in battles to reveal the crystal underneath + added the eyebrows from Alolan Geodude. I imagine it's like, the more outer layer gets chipped away from a Geodude, the closer they get to evolution. I do not at all know what this world's Graveller or Golem would look like but I think I'd canonise the theory of Machoke and Graveller taking aspects of the other when traded and make them kinda like Karrablast and Shelmet in a way.
Broad plot strokes are just these guys would exist in a version of the indigo league w an expanded kanto dex to include all related mons + variants, so stuff like Electivire and Annihilape and Alolan Exeggcutor would exist in there without much fanfare of ~Woahhhh Newly Discovered Pokemon~. Regional variants would be found on the Sevii Islands. Maybe there'd be small type changes too idk. Like pure Rock Geodude that gain Ground on evolution bc Gravel-ler. idk who knows I'm just spitballin. Essentially just a lil more closely following the Game's story, I guess. Less wacky loose adaptation stuff from Indigo League. Not bc I don't like that stuff, just bc it's not what I'd do.
I figure like, there'd be an interlude short arc that takes place in the Sevii Islands just after the Vermillion Gym where Ash would catch a Galarian Farfetch'd and all forms of Paldean Tauros instead of like, 100 Kantonian Tauros, and be introduced to Legendary Pokemon through a quest to track down the Galarian Legendary birds (then find out others can be found back in Kanto). Naturally he'd use the PC system (maybe adapted as some kind of daycare or something, or maybe just a teleporter to Oak's lab like the main anime) and have a couple more than 6 team members to rotate out as needed. Also. Mega Evolution would be a factor bc I think it'd be cool, so Ash gets to Mega Evolve Charizard into Mega Charizard Y.
OH also just for funsies, I'd split the starters across the trio, so Ash gets Charmander, Misty gets Squirtle and Brock gets Bulbasaur.
Basically Ash would end up with more or less the same team from the original series, but with added Annihilape, Sirfetch'd, Paldean Tauros and Mega Charizard Y. I also think I'd add Dragonite from Journeys and make his Gengar the Haunter he befriended that would follow him in secret after helping him beat Sabrina and evolve in the Cinnabar Mansion + officially join his team there.
Squirtle would evolve into Wartortle with Misty and Bulbasaur would stay in the same stage with Brock like Ash's.
I'll come up with and probably draw everyone's main teams at some point later but. ya. that's my piece!

Pokémon: Kanto Reloaded
If you’ve played a Kanto game before, it’s a near-guarantee that you’ve faced down Brock with a Mankey and your starter, after wading through hordes of Caterpie and Weedle in Viridian Forest. Perhaps you chose Bulbasaur for the type advantage over the first three gyms. And you’ve definitely braced yourself for an onslaught of Zubat in Mt. Moon. That predictability is what Reloaded seeks to eliminate, instead presenting you with a game in which you’ll never quite know what’s around each corner - and in which every single playthrough is unique. You’ll still get all that nostalgic Gen 1 goodness (in GBA graphics style), but you might run into Starly, Wurmple, and Weedle in the Forest, while another player is catching Pidgey, Blipbug, and Scatterbug, and while yet another sees Pikipek, Venipede, and Caterpie (and so on). Trainers and Gym Leaders are similarly randomized: any one of 18 different Leaders might call Pewter City their home! Traditional randomizers are fun in their own right, but they often destroy the difficulty curve when you can pick up, for example, a Snorlax on Route 1. In Reloaded, you’ll still go from catching birds and bugs early to encountering sea monsters late, preserving the game’s natural arc. But rather than a set roster of Pokémon species available to you, the ‘mons you come across will be a unique combination of creatures that fit each route. Each Reload aims to present you with a different experience while still retaining the feel and the spirit of the familiar game we all know and love.
Features:
Randomized wild Pokémon encounters in each playthrough!
(Semi-)Random trainers with (semi-)random teams!
Mystery Gyms and a new Elite Four!
A revamped Kanto with new areas to explore!
A more cohesive, overhauled story!
Following Pokémon, Gameplay Modes, and other QoL Adjustments!

Ash Ketchum Becomes Reigning Champion During World Coronation Series
Tumblr media
Above: Ash Ketchum holding the World Coronation Series trophy after defeating Galar's champion Leon in the finals of the Master Class.
By: Admin | 31.12.2023 | 1.5k words
Introduction
Finally, young Ash Ketchum has reached the top during the recent World Coronation Series after his several years of defeats from the many Pokémon Leagues he participated in.
Ketchum has not only participated in seven Leagues aside from the Coronation Series, but also actively contributed to the formation and organisation of the Alolan League (of which he fought in and became Champion). Ketchum is revered by many from all walks of life and all ages, and seeing his track record of saving the world, he truly deserves the praise and admiration he gets.
The Journey: Boy to Adolescence
Kanto & Johto
Although most of his badges were rumoured to have been obtained through means other than battling, he still got to Top 16 in the Indigo League, and Top 8 in the Silver Conference. No one can deny his love and kindness towards his Pokémon and friends alike is something not many have.
During the Kanto and Johto periods of Ash's journey, his main rival was Gary Oak. Yes, the Gary Oak. Sources say that Ash and Gary used to be childhood best friends, before something unfortunate happened that caused their friendship to sour. Many times did they butt heads, but many times too did they work together to thwart the plans of evil organisations such as Team Rocket. However, Gary later decided to change paths to work towards following in his grandfather's footsteps. Today, Gary is a renowned researcher in Project Mew, coincidentally alongside Ash's recent travel companion Goh.
Ash travelled with Gym Leaders Misty and Brock of Cerulean and Pewter respectively. The same team carried into Johto, and Brock following Ash all the way to Sinnoh. I interviewed Brock about the young boy, and his experiences seemed quite...chaotic.
"Ash is an enigma. Sometimes, you know exactly what he's gonna do, but you can never seem to figure out his way of thinking. He started off as a really naïve and temperamental boy, but at least he's grown and matured while keeping that same mentality."
"And what would you say was his most redeeming quality?" I asked.
Brock smiled, "His personality. Even though he was easily annoyed, the sheer amount of times he brought the mood up for everyone when we were busy saving the world is...Ash is special. Special to many. He lives in all of his companions's hearts, that I can say with confidence."
"How lovely. Would you say he deserved the title of Champion?"
"I think, in many people's minds, he's already their Champion."
Hoenn
"Ash is a like a very annoying big brother."
May is a famous coordinator who has travelled with Ash during his Hoenn days, along with her little brother Max and Brock. She notes that Ketchum destroyed her bike on the first day of her Pokémon Journey.
"Apparently, he did that to Misty's bike too. I think he still owes us those new bikes."
Old 'grudges' aside, Ash once again placed Top 8 in the Ever Grande Conference.
Ash's save-the-world-meter in this era was slowly turning up, with Team Aqua and Team Magma standing in his way, both with malicious intents to wipe out/take over the world respectively. Sightings of Rayquaza, Groudon and Kyogre were noted by locals.
Sinnoh
The daughter of famous retired Coordinator Johanna, Dawn, followed Ash on his Sinnoh Journey accompanied by Brock once again. Some may come to think that Brock must've wanted to travel a lot since young and kept that in until he was free to travel without worrying about his many brothers and sisters.
Ash's encounters in Sinnoh were by no means normal. The Lake Trio was the least of it all, with the most jaw-dropping information having revealed to us by Ash Ketchum himself.
"It was a whole thing with Arceus, Dialga and Palkia! I don't really remember it though. It's been so long!"
This explains many things about Ketchum, of which I will let you decide what it exactly entails.
Ash finally climbed to Top 4 in the Lilly of the Valley Conference.
Unova
Ketchum is undoubtly more relaxed in Unova. Maybe it was due to the carefree-spirited people and Pokémon of the region, but Ash noted that he felt like he felt freer.
This time, Brock took a backseat in accompanying Ash and went back to Kanto to become a Pokémon Doctor. Ash's companions in this region is, funnily enough, someone also in the Master League. None other than the Dragon Princess herself partnered up with Ash and Cilan, another Unovan Gym Leader, through the region.
Kalos
And alas, home base! Well, my home base anyway. Many say that the Kalos region was where Ketchum's fashion sense peaked, it turns out that he had many girls his age turning heads to see that blue jacket with those baggy pants.
His companions in Kalos consists of our very own Kalos Queen Serena, along with the siblings who manage Lumiose City's gym, Clemont and Bonnie. Quite the adventurous group!
Ash managed to clinch the runner-up place in the Lumiose Conference, only second to one of our Champions, Alain. However, Alain had refused the position and had gone off to spend time with his sister.
The epic final battle that happened between Ash and Lysandre was truly a sight to see. I could still remember everyone's eyes glued to the television, and everyone who had met Ash or at least heard about him had their hands clenched together, all wishing him the very best to be able to defeat Lysandre.
Special mention to Ash's Greninja, who could Mega-Evolve without a Mega Stone. This phenomena is still being researched by Professor Sycamore to this day.
Alola
If you thought that Unova Ash was laid back, wait til' you hear about this one. This era was truly his peak RNR time.
His companions during his time in Alola would be everyone in the Pokémon School that he attended, run by Professor Samuel Oak's cousin.
"This was an entirely new experience for me! I've never consistently hung out with so many people before, and I've never been formally schooled since I left for my journey so early. It was pretty eye-opening, but also led me to realise that I had some issues with staying put in one place. I got bored pretty fast. Not saying that Alola is boring - it's just...I can't really sit still if you get what I mean."
It was something everyone around him worried about, but nevertheless, he somehow still managed to help organise the Manalo Conference AND reach the top as Alola's first ever champion.
Galar
Ash's time in Galar had been an eventful one, battling trainers left and right from the World Coronation Series. It seems that he enjoys Galarian recipes as well, with people flocking to Galar just to eat their well-known scones that Ash had popularised.
Ash's acts of bravery to defend peace were more well-known during this era due to the globalisation of Rotom devices such as Rotomphones and Rotompads. His courage being shown on screens worldwide had made him climb in popularity.
Ash travelled to Galar with a fellow Kantonian, Goh, as research fellows for Cerise Labs. As previously mentioned, Goh eventually joined Project Mew alongside Ash's old rival-turned-good-friend Gary Oak on a journey to find Mew. The two however, only parted ways before Ash's Master League battles.
"Goh is truly a one-of-a-kind friend you don't really get to see anywhere. He's all the science-y and tech-y part of being a research fellow. I'm the more curious one!" Ash smiles, nibbling onto the scone from the café we were at.
"Both Gary and Goh are amazing. They know so much about Pokémon too!"
Future Plans
This young boy, however, seems to think that the Leagues and battles he participate in are a smaller slice of what he wants to be in the future. In an interview with the Pokénews Network, he mentioned that his true goal was to become a 'Pokémon Master'. He himself has said that he does not know what it means to be one, but that's probably why he's on a journey.
Despite the lack of answers to his goals, Ash said that he would be settling down with his mother back in Pallet Town for a while. "I just feel like I owe it to her, y'know? She's been supporting me in whatever I do back at home, ever since I left for my Pokémon Journey when I was ten. The least I could do was indulge her in the last few years I get to be a kid and maybe help her out at home."
"Although - my Pokémon Journey is by no means at its end. I'm still gonna venture out there someday to see more Pokémon, get to know them, maybe battle a lil' here and there! But for now, I feel like I should give back some years that my mum lost from my journey."
Mother to Ash Ketchum, Delia Ketchum, shares a similar sentiment. "Ash has very much grown into a big boy now. I'm grateful to everyone who was able to support him while I wasn't there, and to the many people and Pokémon he befriended over the course of his journey. But I do miss having Ash around in the house, it gets a little too quiet for me."
"Do you regret letting him go on his journey?"
"No. If he wants to be the very best like no one ever was, who am I to stop him?"

Worldbuilding Headcanons #7
gyms and their typings!
gyms aren't required to be a certain type. as in, the pewter city gym isn't required to only ever have a rock type specialist as its leader. if brock retired, a fairy specialist could easily take over.
now, that isn't to say that trends don't happen. a good amount of gyms keep to one or two types either for cultural reasons (there's never been a non dragon gym in blackthorn city due to the influence of the blackthorn dragon clan), environmental (sootopolis trends towards water specialists for obvious reasons, but there's been several flying specialist gym leaders), or a chain of familial/mentor relations (like koga passing on the fuschia city gym to his daughter janine).
most gyms, however, change the type of their gym whenever a new leader is instated. there's a whole series of tests you have to go through to become a gym leader and it's not always possible to find someone of the correct type specialty who can pass the tests. it's better and easier to change the gym's type specialty rather than have it be closed for months.
while two gyms can't have the same type, there's no problem if a gym and an elite four member share a type (see janine and koga again). this is because 1-elite four members usually use their personal teams which are generally more diverse type wise than the teams you battle in a gym, and 2-the gym challenge is meant as a learning experience while the elite four gauntlet is meant as a challenge.

Who's your favorite gym leader?
Hello. That would have to be Brock! I did a study abroad at the Pewter Museum, and he would help some of the students there and handle a lot of the Fossil Pokemon. He was very nice, and knew quite a lot about Rock types. I admire his patience and dedication. He was always willing to sit down and teach you everything he knew about Rock types.

My ideal new Kanto game isn’t a RBY remake, but instead a new game set 30 years after the original games. So I was thinking about that and then started thinking about what the gym leaders might look like that.
So this is my pitch for the 2026 Pewer Gym Leader - Mary the practical paleontologist! After Brock retires from battling to focus on his family, he reaches out to a gym trainer who always did well when she was interning there in her teens. Pulled from her job as researcher/tour guide at the Pewter Museum, she took to it right away.
Pewter Gym is still a rock-type gym, but with a bigger focus on Kanto’s fossil Pokémon. Mary is called the practical paleontoligst because to learn about these ancient Pokemon, she just has them revised and raises/breeds them. Her signature Pokemon and general favourite is Aerodactyl. She’s bred so many of them that it’s actually pretty routine to see Aerodactyl about in Pewter City, andt the locals don’t think much of it. In fact, a few of the friendlier Aerodactyl can be convinced to pose for tourist photos, help with heavy items, and even do deliveries throughout the city!
Mary is a good battler in her own right, but her focus as a gym leader is more to use it as a science outreach center and encourage kids to get interested in rock and fossil Pokémon. As part of her gym test, you have to dig for fossils in the sand and match them up to their respective Pokemon (Dome/Kabuto, Helix/Omanye, Amber/Aerodactyl) within the time limit.
As reward for beating her, she hands out the Boulder Badge, an Ancient Power TM, and will even sneak you a years pass to the museum, encouraging you to take a tour of a cloning facility ASAP. Especially if you’re interested in raising an Aerodactyl yourself...

Pokemon Gyms and whether my wheelchair user player character would be able to navigate them
Pewter City: Straight line on some cobblestones. Compared to the rest of this bullshit, this is luxury. Brock needs to come down off his staircase throne at the end of the corridor though.
Cerulean City: Yes. Mans can just scoot scoot around the edge of the pool. Misty has to come down to meet him though, she’s also on a staircase throne.
Vermilion City: Once he gets past the initial ‘what the fuck’ of the thunder barrier, as long as the bins are spaced out enough he’s fine. Doesn’t appreciate rummaging through trash though. At least mans isn’t on a staircase throne this time.
Celadon City: Depends entirely on how much tree is actually left after using cut.
Fuchsia City: He can make it through, but after about the third time of bumping into an invisible wall he’ll be real sick of this shit.
Saffron City: Runs entirely on little teleporters. Gucci.
Cinnabar Island: I never got to Blaine in LeafGreen but it looks like a straight shot.
Seafoam Island: Wouldn’t even be able to enter the gym in the first place. Can’t climb ladders.
Viridian City: Would probably develop motion sickness from all the spinning but I think he can navigate this one.
Violet City: I wouldn’t feel confident navigating the sharp turns 50 feet in the air walking, never mind trying to manoeuvre a chair through them. He can do it, but he won’t be at all comfortable.
Azalea Town: Stairs right at the entrance. Motherfucker.
Goldenrod City: Hard nope. Multiple steep staircases. Fuck you, Whitney
Ecruteak City: Morty, I love you, but the narrow walkway entirely in darkness over the void to hell isn’t exactly able bodied person friendly, never mind this-
Cianwood City: Another hard nope, those stairs look homophobic
Olivine City: Another straight walkway with an elevated leader. She’s definitely nice enough to meet him halfway too.
Mahogany Town: Ice gyms as a whole are bad. Not sure how well the chair will do on the ice (do you want to slip and skate or have traction?) and in Vernon’s case he is paralysed from the waist down so his lower body isn’t great at the whole temperature regulation thing. He’s definitely learning about winter’s harshness, thank you. Compared to the other ice gyms this one is pretty chill though.
Blackthorn City: The warning of unstable footing at the start is worrying, but the puzzle itself can be done.
Rustboro City: It’s all ramps until you get to the almighty stair throne, so okay. Also he’s absolutely stopping to look at the little museum.
Dewford Town: Give him enough room between all the exercise shit and we’re gucci
Mauville City: More of these random electric death walls? Eh whatever, the floor’s level at least. ... NEVER MIND I FOUND MORE STAIRS
Lavaridge Town: What the fuck. Fuck you.
Petalburg City: Doesn’t seem to pose any problem, yay!
Fortree City: I don’t think he’s getting in, dear.
Mossdeep City: Y’know what? All this floating around is pretty cool, actually
Sootopolis City: WALLACE YOU MOTHERFUCKER WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS
Oreburgh City: Ah yes. Vernon’s actual home region serving him an immediate slap in the face with steep ass stone stairs. Wonderful.
Eterna City: Ahh, so peaceful, so chill, such a vibe. Maybe there is hope after all.
Veilstone City: Goodbye hope, hello whatever the fuck I have to push and a lot of stairs before you even enter the gym itself-
Pastoria City: Besides this being the weirdest fucking swimming pool I’ve ever seen, it’s another fuck you to wheelchair users. Though Vernon can swim, so if there’s a clear path from the entrance to the leader via the water he can make it, he’s just going to have to fight the battle soaking wet, in a swimsuit and on the floor.
Hearthome City: As long as you can do maths, you’re alright.
Canalave City: He can navigate it but those super speed lifts are giving him motion sickness for sure.
Snowpoint City: He’s dead now. He fell down the stairs right into the massive piles of snow and suffocated.
Sunyshore City: It’s another hard nope, and I had high hopes when I saw the catwalks-
Striaton City: No problem no worries, Hakuna Matata.
Nacrene City: As long as someone can get the books down for him he’s good.
Castelia City: Pushing through the gooey shit will be annoying but it is possible as long as it doesn’t gunk up the wheels too bad.
Nimbasa City: It’s possible, but only if someone brings his wheelchair round to where he’s getting off the rollercoaster, or the chair can go on the coaster.
Driftveil City: Lifts and scaffolding? Okay. Random staircase right at the very bottom? Not okay.
Mistralton City: The cannons themselves are fully disability friendly. The stairs are not. So close.
Icirrus City: I’m giving this one a no. Even without the stairs, that jump, the fuck? We’re not all stunt ready actors, sir.
Opelucid City: The path is narrow and winding, but it has cool trick ramps and that’s a win in Vernon’s book! But also there’s stairs so 0/10
Aspertia City: Straight shot with a stair throne. Cheren you patronising cunt, get your ass down here.
Virbank City: Stairs right at the beginning. They’ll never hear him scream.
Humilau City: Getting on and off the lilypads looks like a pain, it might be easier to swim it again. Also it looks like you need a lot of momentum to move those pads.
Santalune City: He’s fucking dead again.
Cyllage City: Grant what the French fried fuck is this?
Shalour City: Yeah no this is impossible. Sorry, buddy.
Coumarine City: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS. I can't fucking do this shit with fully functional legs.
Lumiose City: Finally one we can fucking do. Thank you, puntable looking children.
Laverre City: The warp panels are annoying but mountable.
Anistar City: Trippy as fuck and totally doable!
Snowbelle City: Fuck this disco fuckery.
Turffield: Ignoring the stairs in and out (rage), we can handle herding some Wooloo. Git along lil tumbleweeds!
Hulbury: So anyway I don’t like Nessa-
Motostoke: So again ignoring the stairs in it’s totally doable-
Stow-On-Side: Can transfer in and out of the spinny cups, but someone has to bring the chair down while he does it.
Circhester: Fuck you and your pitfalls.
Ballonlea: OLD LADY HAS RAMPS YAY
Spikemuth: What a nice wheelchair friendly street!
Hammerlocke: I forget if you can actually get in the room, but hey it’s just double battles, sweet.
Cortondo: The olive roll is possible.
Artazon: May depend entirely on where the Sunflora choose to hide. The gym itself is elevated up some stairs though so...
Levincia: All you have to do is sit there and look at some cameras and look pretty for the fans.
Cascarrafa: The trek through the desert to get Kofu’s wallet back to him ain’t gonna go well, but this is supposedly not the usual pre battle challenge so ehh.
Medali: The stage at the treasure eatery is a whore but everything else is fine.
Montenevera: Once again, access to the stage and the gym itself are whores. He’s gonna pet all the ghost dogs though.
Alfornada: You just gotta make faces for this one, right? Surely any other exercises Dendra and Tulip give you should be able to be adapted for the disabled anyway.
Glaseado: Uhhh the snow slope run is done on the back of a Pokemon as far as I remember so it should be fine.

Actually, genuinely curious about this: I know this is far more prevalent in the anime spheres since Ash is typically the main character and he has a last name in the dub, so I'm mostly expecting anime fic writers to answer this, but I'm curious. If you ever have to bring up a Pokemon's character's full name, how do you do so?
I mainly ask because I personally do the last option (and pretend only Gary and Professor Oak have a last name) because I feel like it causes the least complications? Like if I used Japanese names for example, we run into issues with characters like Serena, Reggie and Gou whose names are fundamentally the same, only changing spelling if they have to between the dub and the original. And also it brings into question with siblings, such as May and Max and Clemot and Bonnie, whose Japanese name is the family name? Because May Haruka and Max Masato imply they aren't related, but who wins out in this scenario? (Though personally, when it comes to Clemot and Bonnie, I love the idea of their last name being Eureka. Bonnie wins out over Clemot because I think it fits, LOL)
And then making up adjectives is cool and all, and probably the least likely to cause complications? But then I wonder how we're finding the proper adjectives/puns for their names since Ketchum is a play on "catch em" and Sketchit is literally what he does. So when picking out the adjectives, what do we do when you assigned the easy ones first (for example, Brock's being Stone bc rock type gym leader) and then have to think of the harder ones if they appear in your writing? (For example, Zoey, at first glance, doesn't seem like a big issue, but if you look at her JP name for inspiration, Nozomi, it means stone... which is already in use for Brock. But due to her minor role, it might be harder to think of another last name for her, and if you've already written Brock as Brock Stone, would you be willing to retroactively correct that so Zoey has the last name Stone since there's far more material to figure out a proper last name for Brock over Zoey?)
Which is why I like to say from/of location, but even that can be messy because some characters don't have a hometown? Like yeah, Paul from Veilstone City is pretty damn easy to guess, he LIVES there, but like... we saw James' house and its not in a town??? Or a named area? So like... is he just James from Team Rocket? Which is fine... until we consider AUs where he's an ex Team Rocket member. Like... what do we do there?
Idk, I'm just curious about the thoughts on this.

Pewter City.
Hypothetically, I could reach out to the local gym leader today, in the approximately forty minutes that remain before he is done with challengers for the day.
Hypothetically. I very much could do this.
I also could put it off until tomorrow, as there is no obvious signs of Rocket causing trouble here. Silver is inclined to believe that if they will be anywhere, it would be Viridian City, and after hearing her reasoning to that I am inclined to agree.
Still. I should check in with... Brock, is it? I should check in with him regardless. I will do so tomorrow.

⚡️⚡️ RO-TO-TO! VIDEO INCOMING. ⚡️⚡️
Pewter City. What a sight, huh? Just about as simple as a small town could get. Look, some trees. A Pokécenter, and by Arceus, a Pokémart! ... Well that actually is pretty impressive, seeing a Pokémart separate from a Pokécenter. Most days they tend to be merged together. Anyways.
Derek, with Lady Zee by his side, makes his way towards Pewter City Gym, and despite the early morning scenery he would usually awe over until noon hit, he was on a mission; marching steadfast to kick off a start to this Kantonese Gym Challenge he seemed... ever so uncertain about before. Even for him, with his near-blank stare, you can see small gleams and glimmers of confidence. Zee is holding his fresh forearm cast, give or take an obvious sign of reluctance. There's some back and forth murmuring about "Are you sure you're okay?" and "I'm fine" an overabundance of times, before the two of them briefly stop in front of the door. Derek sighs out some of his predisposed adrenaline, while Zee turns her head up, regaining a friendly smile from her once worried expression.
"I think you're going to do great! I'm with you every step of the way, alright?"
Derek scoffs, smiling right back.
"Thank you."
While Derek makes some slow and graceful slides through the door, Zee is practically throwing herself in, pulling Derek some with her. A cold breeze, and a healthy amount of sand and dust later, they're in.
The place is huge, despite what it looks to be on the outside. Gyms were always like magic tardis rooms, weren't they? The Rotom recording flies around some in the open area, inspecting the blue wall, judging the dirty shirt of the singular lead-up trainer below. Seriously, it looks like he hasn't changed that thing for weeks. Derek immediately spots a path to avoid the straight road that leads to Brock, after all, who needs to battle in a gym? He runs his way around the rock-textured walls, and as much as the trainer tries to make eye contact, they remain completely ignored. Derek's on a mission, he's not here to battle every trainer he sees. Zee acknowledges them, waving with a friendly smile; But since this isn't her gym challenge, the trainer simply waves back, sighing a little. It seems this happens often enough.
Derek stumbles up the very short flight of stairs, Zee practically skipping up behind him as they face the now turned away Rock type Gym Leader. Derek hesitates, it's been a while since he's done this, hopefully he's not too rusty.
"Alola."
"Alola!"
"...Hm?"
Why, we couldn't have expected this.
It's Brock! but... with an actual sweatshirt on instead of a stupid standalone vest. And he has a beard. And a mustache. Sheesh, things must've really gone downhill for this kid since the golden days. Let me...
...
WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S 43!?
An Omanyte by his side squeaks, hiding behind one of his shoes, grabbing his shin as a makeshift shield.
"Oh, Alola to you two, as well!"
The two can't help but be confused at the mirror of their greetings. Brock wasn't from Alola, was he?
"Huh? What's the matter? ...
Ohhhh.
Don't look so shocked! I took a visit there not too long ago with some old friends of mine. Besides, we get plenty of Alolan tourists around here, too. It's just part of the dialect, you know?"
"Oh, that's wonderful! You'll have to tell me about your visit after the battle!"
Derek doesn't verbally respond, he just laughs it off.
"Ah, maybe! So then, who's our contender?"
As Brock says this, he hopingly looks to Zee.
"... It's, me, actually."
"I-
Oh
RIGHT! Mr. Alloy, isn't it? Great to have you!"
"That would be correct. And thank you."
"Alright! Recognized as an experienced trainer, isn't that something?"
"...mhm..."

⚡️⚡️"AND SO BEHOLDS THE BATTLE BETWEEN A FOOL AND A MASTER. AN AMATEUR AND AN EXPERT. MAY I PRESENT. METALHEAD. AND THIS GUY. CAN YOU BOTH HURRY UP, I WANT TO GO BACK TO OUR NOT-HOME HOME."⚡️⚡️
"... I am incredibly sorry about him... I... can't exactly stop him, you see."
"Ah, all is well! Challengers tend to enjoy recording their battles often enough!"
"Hee!" ✨
"Right then! With that said, let's get on with it!"
Zee shuffles out of the frame of the camera, excusing herself to the sidelines as the battle arena seems to open up, Derek and Brock backing away from each other, hands on their Pokéballs in thought. As Zee finds herself in a comfortable position in the crowdspace, she yells
"Best of luck, cousin! You've got this!"
Normally, the starter of a battle is often determined by chance, whoever tosses their Pokéball first, and then the other compromises with the best counter. However the Leader then Challenger approach makes this process a bit easier. Instead, Brock simply flicks his wrist forward, sending the Omanyte at his side into battle. This wasn't the direction Derek was expecting this to take, the Omanyte being water type and therefore Lotus being ineffective in this situation. So instead, he grabs hold of the Dive Ball, sending out Jubilee, his newly evolved Galvantula. Zee winces at the spider, backing up much more than necessary, almost against the wall. Brock cocks his head some, but he can see what's going on. He shoots his hand out, commanding a move.
"Omanyte, Rollout, let's go!"
The Omanyte tucks into its shell, charging a spin in place before launching itself at Jubilee.
Despite taking the hit well, she does seem somewhat disoriented. She couldn't see where the attack was coming from, after all, she wasn't given any forewarning. She shakes off some kicked up rocks from her periwinkle fur, lifting up her mandibles afterwards. With some light shocks of electricity, she searches for her target.
left. zip
right. zap
left right. zip zap.
warmer. zip zip.
Gotcha.
Derek takes notice of Jubilee's newfound awareness, and acts accordingly.
"Jubilee, Electro Ball."
With one, two, three notches of charge, she fires the ball of electricity at the small water type, nearly taking it out in one hit. It shivers, struggling to get itself back up on its tentacles.
"Agh, you alright, buddy? I know you're new at this,"
Brock leans down, giving the Omanyte a comforting pat on the shell. It trills, shaking the shock off of itself and prepping itself for the next attack. Brock nods, standing back up.
"Alright, Rollout, one more time!"
This time, Jubilee knew it was coming. She knew where the Omanyte was. She knows the amount of time it took for the Rollout to hit after the attack was commanded. She jumps out of the way, and out of pure instinct, uses Electroweb on the Omanyte now below it. Upon the attack landing, the fossil Pokémon faints, retreating back into its Pokéball.
"... Huh. Would you look at that."
Zee cheers, though jumping when the spider turns in her direction; acknowledging the sound of her voice. By all means, Derek did not call that move, but it was within the turn pattern, so it didn't call for a disqualification. It was odd, but Pokémon develop habits and methods to their madness, so every one's battling style is bound to be different. He grabs for his belt, throwing out his Graveler, who happily punches all four of its fists together to pump itself up. Derek takes a moment to assess the risks here, and decides to withdraw Jubilee; swapping her with Lotus, who turns to look at Derek for treats almost immediately, rather than acknowledging the battle.
"... No, no... Lotus, turn around, please."
You can almost see the spider mouth "oh" as it sees its opponent, swiftly switching to a battling stance rather than a friendly, socializing one. Before Derek can send out a command, briefly forgetting who's turn it was, Brock confidently shouts out a move.
"Self Destruct, let's go!"
It's much before Derek can react. 1. 2. 3. Explosion. The blast nearly takes out Lotus with it, but the Graveler holds on, even after seeming to sacrifice its health. He takes a moment to catch up to what's just happened, but quickly ciphers a response.
"Scald."
And with a prep, and a sudden ray of boiling water, the Graveler is down as well.
"Hey, not bad! Just about what I expected. Don't expect me to go easy on you from here on, though."
"Mhm.."
With another snap of Brocks belt, he sends out his Kabutops, who seems immediately ready for battle, just like the last Pokémon. It crouches down some, ready to lunge towards Lotus well before he could be withdrawn.
"Absorb!"
The Kabutops holds its razor sharp hands together, drawing a green aura in the air around it, before lunging it towards Lotus, then reeling it back towards itself. With the remainder of Lotus' energy drained, he faints, collapsing to the gym floor before being swiftly returned to his pokéball. Derek looks visibly pained, of course after he boasted about how easy this gym would be, it now proved to be somewhat of a challenge. Most of the pokémon on his team were essentially useless here, either not being the right level or not having a proper typing advantage; hell, one not even having fighting moves at all, just Innards Out as an ability. In a panic, he switches back to Jubilee, who immediately begins searching for her target again.
Locked.
"Jubilee, Electroweb."
Jubilee spins around once, before raising her head and spitting out the attack from her mouth. Within seconds, the Kabutops is now encased in a static-bound web; and as much as it tries to cut through the threads with its claw-like hands, it's only tangling itself more and more. Although Brock tries to command it to use a move, it's completely stuck, it can hardly get up off the ground. Instead, Derek commands once again, shooting his hand out.
"Electro Ball."
And with a sudden blast, the Kabutops is down as well, Electroweb dissipating as it collapses into its fainted stance. With that, it only leaves one opponent at the stakes; though unfortunate to deal with, given that Lotus has fainted to the aforementioned Kabutops. Out slithers the Onix, towering over Brock and wrapping itself like a snake ready to attack around the stadium. It looks down at the Galvantula below it, then roars.
Jubilee looks in its direction, chattering with confusion. That was a loud noise. What was that loud noise?
Right.
Derek retreats Jubilee. but. Now what does he do? He can't-
...
well he could.
With a rare snatch to his 6th bag lock, he grabs Pyuku's pokéball, sending it out onto the battlefield. Despite Brock's time in Alola, he doesn't seem to recognize this thing at all. Upon the switch in team members, though, it's once again Brock's turn, and there's only one way this could go.
And just as he thought, Brock goes for an exceedingly powerful move.
"Alright, Onix, you know the drill! Take Down, let's finish this!"
The snakely rock slithers around Brock a couple of times, before speeding up, marking the perimeter of the stadium, speeding up, faster and faster as it goes, an orange aura begins to make itself evident around the creature's face. Once the force of energy turns a yellowish-white, it makes an impact on Pyuku, practically squishing it inside out.
And after a moment, Brock begins to realize what's happened.
With one hit, Brock's not only managed to one hit K.O. the Pyukumuku, but his own Pokémon as well, which has now been covered with multiple of Pyuku's hands, as to visually represent how it'd dragged its opposer down with it. And with that final debunkle, the battle is over, and Derek proves victorious.
Though grossed out by the choice in Pokémon, Zee uproars once again.
"Aaaaa! See! You did so well!"
... Derek pauses to think for a moment, but his once stoic and well-invested expression breaks off, showing a cheeky smirk underneath. What a way to start a Tuesday, huh? Zee runs over, tackle-hugging her cousin in the sheer excitement of victory-- only for Derek to now be doubled over in pain.
"Zee. Zee Back"
"Oh-
Arc I'm sorry!!! I'm just-"
"You don't need to explain yourself. I'm happy, too."
He laughs, backing away from the hug, the two of them exchanging grins for a moment before Brock beckons the air in front of Derek; holding something behind his back.
"Well, you won, fair and square. I completely forgot Pyukumuku's entire offense was. That. I do think I owe you something, though."

Having made their way through the forest, Ash and company are doing stuff around potential internet people again! The gym leaders must be like the equivalent of having a local celebrity, so Pewter City must have eaten up the drama surrounding Brock and his father.
Only one episode between now and the Cerulean City episode. The Sensational Sisters probably have some fans in the Poke world, we’ll see if I can into the stan mindset for them.

Simon, a lanky but spirited ten year old, makes his way through the last leg of Diglett Cave, trudging. The gym challenge was the only thing motivating him forward, but he was determined.
He'd studied, after all, and that had to be enough, right? He knew every type match up, every advantage he could take, he'd even plotted out the very best route he could take to ensure he faced each gym in the most optimal order.
All he had was a bellsprout. For this badge that was all he'd really calculated he'd need. He was sure his math was sound. There really wasn't a way he could lose.
Could he?
He arrives at the gym in Pewter City, a little worn out, jacket torn, and rather dirt covered. But he was ready.
[There are gaps in this data. Did he heal before he went to the gym? Did he g to the pokemrt. This memory is unstable..]
He is standing before Brock now, trembling a little. He's got his big book of pokemon facts still under his arm, mumbling as many memorized facts until...
Brock- Welcome challenger. I'm Brock, leader of the Pewter City gym. You're here for your first badge, is that right?
Brock is much more forceful than Simon had anticipated. He suddenly finds himself trembling. Maybe this was a mistake.
Simon- I'm.. er... Simon, from Celedon City. I'm here to battle you for the Boulder Badge.
Trainers in Celedon typically started with Erika. But the chance to take on an early type advantage with Bellsprout seemed to be the right move. At least it had when he started out. Now he wasn't as sure.
Brock doesn't seem to mind. He selects two Pokeballs from a panel of Six and stands before Simon in ready position.
Brock- Alright. Let's see what you've got then, challenger.
He sends out his first Pokemon, a Geodude, just as expected. Simon throws out his first and only Pokemon.
Simon- Go, Bells!
The Bellsprout looks ready to move. Prepared for the fight in front of it. But Simon looks a little uncertain. He still calls his first attack. He'd already prepared his strategy in advance.
Simon- Bells, start with growth. Um... and then..
Brock- Geodude. Tackle!
The attack comes swifter than Simon accounted for, and hits it hard. The impact is so much more than he'd accounted for.
Critical hit.
What comes next? Another attack? Is there time to use a status? Just go! He knows he has to just go!
Simon- Bellsprout use... er...
He draws a blank. Staring at that Geodude in the center of the arena, every single calculation he'd run through is suddenly gone from his mind.
Brock- Geodude. Tackle, again!
Another hit. Bells is on the ground. Its looking back.
S: Bells, just- just attack use.. Mega.. vine? Tombstoner? Use.. um...
Too late. By the time he can even get his wits about him again the battle is over. He recalls the Bellsprout to its Pokeball, defeated, overwhelmed, humiliated.
If he couldn't win a match with such a clear advantage how could he be expected to win any at all.
He runs from the gym without ever waiting for what Brock had to say next. He wasn't going to be a trainer after all. ]
