His present gets delivered. The delivery people let him know that no it's definitely not the a mistake and that the note says it's a mini fridge, courtesy of Pepper Potts and Tony Stark oh and happy birthday! They hoist the orange mini fridge up to where Harley's told them to put it, and fill it with his favourite drinks. He gets a call too, the moment Pepper gets the notification that it's been delivered. "Hey, happy birthday."

the phone rings just mere moments after the guys who had delivered the mini fridge were out the door. he's still crouched in front of it, bright smile on his face as he answers the call. " thank you, pepper ! " voice was bubbling over with happiness. it was a perfect little addition to his workshop, nice little speck of colour too. " i love it. it's perfect. " he had mentioned mini fridges maybe once some months ago. hadn't even been sure anyone was listening but then again, he shouldn't be surprised. pepper was just attentive like that. " i can't believe you remembered i wanted one. "

                               "IT'S MORE LIKE A CASTLE," Steve says with a crooked smile. Buildings like this could house 10 families and more – and yet it's only Tony Stark living here. What the hell does he do with all that space? You don't need more than one kitchen, one living room, one bath – maybe a nursery for every kid, but Stark doesn't have children, either. It's probably a rich person thing, and thus nothing Steve will ever understand.

                             "I'll be right down. Thank you, Miss Potts," Steve repeats with a smile. He waits until she has left the room before he pulls the stained shirt over his head and puts on the new one. It feels exceptionally soft. Steve can't help but rub the fabric between his fingertips a couple of times. Upon closer inspection, a wall panel next to the wardrobe turns out to be a door with a spacious bathroom behind it. Steve tries to scrub the avocado stain out of the shirt in the sink, then leaves it to dry on the radiator. Before long, he's back downstairs in the enormous living room, feeling much better now that he's properly dressed again. "How old is this house, anyway? Did Tony build it? Or his father?"

"Really. I want to. You guys have put so much effort into this whole party - it's the least I can do."

He wanted to do more. After everything that had become of the fall of SHIELD, everyone had had to take time to recover. But this party - a surprise party for Chloe - was a sign of things finally getting back to normal. Tony had basically paid for the whole thing (probably peanuts to him in the grand scheme of things), so providing some food alongside the already catered spread really wasn't much to offer in comparison.

"I just need numbers. Specifically the number of people with super metabolisms. Oh - and I do have a costume. Fantasy theme, yeah?"

here  and  there,  peter  has  spent  many  late  nights  working  on  presentations,  and  last  minute  solidworks  project  adjustments.  working  late  doesn’t  bother  him  at  all.  there’s  less  people  carrying  high  grandeur  in  the  offices,  and  it  means  his  next  paycheck  will  be  a  little  bigger.  he  could  use  the  money.  

tonight  isn’t  that  late  of  a  night.  there’s  still  some  people  in  offices  and  working  around  tables.  if  anything,  peter  might  even  call  it  early.  but  his  work  for  the  day  is  done,  he  wrapped  up  work  on  a  project  the  day  before  and  now  he’s  just  waiting  on  feedback  for  it.  jacket  in  hand,  backpack  on  their  shoulders,  they’re  all  but  out  the  door.  tugging  at  the  straps  he  waited  by  the  elevators,  teetering  slightly  in  place  as  the  numbers  rocketed  up  to  the  floor.

there’s  a  distinct  sound  of  heels—  pepper’s—  behind  him.  he’s  run  into  her  plenty  of  those  late  nights,  so  it  doesn’t  surprise  him  when  she  asks  about  him  leaving.  they  felt  confident  coming  this  far,  but  a  shred  of  doubt  starts  to  form.  “yeah-  that’s  not-  that’s  not  an  issue,  right?  it’s  just  that  i  wrapped  up  everything  else,  and…  there’s  not  much  going  on  today,  by  the  looks  of  it.  not  that  people  aren’t  working,  but-”

She often found herself doing this now.   It was a way to cope with everything and it was something she could easily hide.   WELL,  from most.  She had noticed that Tony was starting to notice when she hit a certain level of tiredness and because of this, her coffee bean stash was running low. Hand moving to the jar until she heard a voice. Soft smile placed on lips as she looked over at the two coffees. A MIRACLE.  She took the coffee and brought it up to her lips immediately. She needed to do something before her eyes started to droop when that happened she knew she would have to deal with lying to Tony about her sleep patterns (for the third time this week). 

The coffee came with one drawback, now she had to wonder why did Pepper bring over two coffees for her?  OH NO.   had someone else figured out what was going on.  NOPE, don’t fester on it.  Sarah liked Pepper, she thought Pepper was very different to what she had expected and truly a nice person but Sarah was always a little wary with letting people in. The pain from drifting apart was not always worth it, and after all - they always drifted apart.  Still, she had been silent for to long.  ❛ thank you,   you really didn’t have too,  but thank you. ❜

                          STARK NEEDS TO LEAVE ON SHORT NOTICE — maybe something about his company, he doesn't elaborate — and leaves Steve alone in his huge mansion with the instruction to wait for Miss Potts. Steve finishes off all of the things Stark ordered for breakfast (you don't just waste food, after all, and this is the first time in months he gets the caloric intake a super soldier requires), and kind of walks around a little lost until he tries one door and the robot in the ceiling makes a honking noise and tells him he's not allowed to enter. So Steve has to awkwardly ask this Jarvis thing where the bathroom is and then make sure there aren't any cameras to, you know, record him peeing or something. 

                       Unfortunately, he sees that he dribbled a bit of that weird green avocado stuff on his shirt when he washes his hands. It's not his shirt, to be precise, which means someone had to peel him out of his uniform and dress him, and Steve would rather not think about that, so he wets a little toilet paper and dabs at the stain while leaving the bathroom, and when he looks up, there is a lady near the front door. Steve blinks, hand automatically going up to tip his hat, only he doesn't wear a hat, he's standing there with bare feet and a stain on his shirt and wet toilet paper in his hand, and there is a lady. Steve feels a little mortified. "Uh, um — ma'am–?"

"It just feels like an intrusion," Rhodey's face does something strange, twisting into something inherently grateful but also regretful - he really doesn't want to bother Tony and Pepper when they're at home and out of the public eye, even with an invitation. Besides, it’s really not that far to his own apartment, especially if he takes an alternate mode of transport to driving. “You know, I think I’ll be okay? It’s not too late, we haven’t been drinking... I can make it home in time to get a good night before tomorrow.”
