PearlplusAU Chapter 8 part 3 - The Human

Greg and Rose spent time together as a couple. The human patiently waited for his amazing girlfriend in the temple. Every minute and second of waiting was well worth it when his girlfriend swooped back in. Loyal Greg always waited for the return of his girlfriend. Whether it’s the coldest time of the year, or waiting hungry cuz he planned a dinner date with her. The two spent everyday together. They even spent an entire day in his van. He fell asleep eating pizza and Rose never took her eyes off him for a second. She laughed when he woke up with a pizza shaped-unsunburned hole on his chest.

On top of the cliff, Rose tossed Greg like a stuff teddy bear. The gems were also getting used to his company. Everytime the gems encountered Greg, they greeted him in distinctive ways. Amethyst would playfully but gently elbow him on the ribs. He would reach his hand out for Pearl, whom ignored it entirely. But the left-hanging hand would always be shaken by the other pearl, Coral. He and Garnet greeted each other with a classic high five. At the end of the encounter, Rose would perform a kiss on the lips with Greg, which was the best part for him. Whenever he’s not with the gang, he would venture to look for ways to clean and feed himself without a source of income. But when all failed, he could always count on his fellow human Vidalia.

Fast forward to Greg and Rose recording their first song together with the gems. A wall of lights flickered in the midst of the temple. The warp pad was decorated into a staging area. Garnet was on the keytar, Amethyst was on the drums, Coral was on the camera, and the two love birds were the lead singers.

“Alright, Coral, hold her steady. You know how to zoom in and out right?” Greg asked the camera-gem.

“Sure do, just let me know when to press the record thingy.”

Greg looked at the gems around the stage, “Everybody ready? A one, two, three, four-”

Blip. The red light in front of the camera flickered to life.

Greg led the song with Garnet and Amethyst following along. Rose followed the tunes and sang the lyrics.

What can I do for you?

What can I do, that, no one else can do?

What can I do, for you?

Human man. You are so much fun.

I hadn’t planned on finding you, quite this entertaining.

I like your band, and I like your song.

I like the way, human beings play. I like playing along.

Woahhhhhh woah…

As Greg went into his killer guitar solo, Coral zoomed in and focused the camera on him. Behind the stage lights, Pearl appeared and whispered something in Rose’s ear.

Whatever she whispered, Rose agreed and joined Pearl to a little dance. The two got to opposite ends and both danced toward the warp pad. They caught each other as they synchronized. Pearl did a twirl around out of Rose’s grip and back in. Her next move caught Greg’s attention as she glared into his eyes. The little act was also caught by the camera gem.

The camera was zoomed out to the entire stage. The two gems shimmered as their bodies turned into light. The two bodies of light combined and fused into a single entity. She had blond hair with pink-highlighted streaks and ends. The fusion had two different sets of eyes, the top set was Pearl’s pale blue while the bottom set was Rose’s pitch black irises. She had an outfit of a ballerina dancer but with additional 80’s vibe of thick socks and exposing toes.

Greg dropped his jaw at the sight of the tall lady but continued his solo. Rainbow performed graceful forms and moves right in front of his eyes. The two sets of eyes have different intentions for the same performance.

For her finishing move, Rainbow got up to the warp pad and stroke a dashing pose. A leg bent over as her entire body shimmered into a glimmer of light. When the light subsided, Rose reappeared on stage with Pearl holding her microphone. Greg watched as she slowly raised and dropped the mic with a sly smile.

With the dropped mic ending the performance, the camera-handling Coral ended the video recording as well.

Greg, who was surprised, turned to Coral. “D-did you got that?”

“Of course, how could I miss her?” She responded, with a slight hint of sarcasm that was not meant for him.

“I can’t believe we got that on video what on earth was that?” Greg’s surprise and excitement made her realized how much is still uncovered for him.

“That, was Rainbow Quartz.” Rose informed. “Pearl thought a fusion would give your video a little something extra. Pretty cool right?” She asked as she pecked him on the lips.

“I have to go, but are you doing anything later?”

“You know I’m not.” Greg said with his famous singer voice that made her giggled.

“You’re adorable Mr Universe. See you later~”

“Bye~” He said dreamingly as Rose warped away.

He stood there for a good while until Amethyst appeared from behind him. “Hey! I hit the drum. So pay up!” She demanded.

Greg retrieved a small bag of snacks with the brand Pop pops on the package. “Here ya go.” He gave her the pack. The small gem attempted to open the pack by shaking it in her mouth.

She opened the snack pack while Pearl twirled a microphone cord behind her.

She caught the device and smurked. “You’re just a phase. You know that right?”

This wasn’t the first time Greg dealt with her. “No Pearl, I don’t know that.”

Coral was just wrapping things up with the camera and sensed tension. She whispered Pearl’s name and got a brief attention from her. She mouthed, “Be nice. “

Pearl flat-out ignored her and turned to Greg. “Well, of course you don’t. You don’t know anything about Rose.”

“I know she’s super into me!” He responded with pride.

Pearl wanted to make it easy, but he’s better than she thought. “Listen Mr Universe. Rose may find you charming, but that’s only because you’re human. You’re a novelty, at best.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“Oh its very simple. Humans cant fuse.” Coral and Amethyst slide behind her. Coral wanted to make sure someone didn’t go too far. While Amethyst was just enjoying the show.

Pearl continued, “Fusion is the ultimate connection between gems, and you, are not, a gem.” She ended her argument with the microphone cord wrapped around him.

“Well, has any human ever tried fusing with a gem?” Greg demanded as he took off the cord wrapped restraint.

“Er, no? I don’t think so?”

“Well then, I will try!” He declared as he did a mic drop with the unplugged microphone.

Clunk!

Upon the drop, Amethyst shrieked and echoed, “Ohhhhhhhh!” While Coral on the other hand, was rubbing the side of her chin with great concern.

Pearl rolled her eyes and sighed in disbelief. She walked out of the temple with Coral on her tail. She caught up and demanded the drama queen, “Pearl! What was that all about? Are you trying to upset Rose? Do you want him to get himself hurt trying to fuse with her?”

Pearl tried to understand why Coral was so upset. “Of course not! It’s nothing like that! I just wanted to make it clear that Rose is literally out of his league! But so far, it seemed like he’s too dense to take a hint! But it doesn’t matter. Once he fails and humiliates himself in front of her, he will have no choice but to break up with her.”

“Oh wow,” Coral connected to her own past experience and realized, “You’re jealous of the human, aren’t you? Is it because she’s been spending so much time with him and has barely enough time for you?”

Pearl wanted to deny it, but her teal blush under the moonlight said it all. “I’m just looking out for her, and the team. If he keeps her distracted, she might one day do something so crazy that even you’ll have to object!”

With that, she took off further into the night, leaving Coral on her trail.

Coral loosened her shoulders and began to relax. “We’ll just see about that.” She said with her arms crossed.

Garnet, Pearl, Coral, and Amethyst were sneaking up Greg’s big fusion dance with Rose. They hid behind a stone hand nearby. Coral was still trying to talk the gems out of it.

“Should we really be sneaking around and spying on them? That doesn’t seem like a good idea.”

Pearl was peering between the fingers, trying to check out the situation on the stage. “We’re just concerned about her and making sure she’s okay.”

Amethyst, who did not bother to hide, sat out on the open. “They look fine to me. Oh hey! I think the dance is almost over.”

All four gems poked their heads out and saw what Amethyst said was true. Pearl was the first to react to the kiss. Her whisper was filled with disbelief, surprise, and anger. Like how Amethyst brought a bunch of her junk into Rose’s room while she was taking a nap.

“Oh my stars, I can’t watch.” She covered her eyes with her hands as she hid behind the stone palm. “Did it happen?”

Coral tried to figure out what she meant by that. “Did what happen?”

The exasperated Pearl sighed, “The fusion, Coral. Did the human fuse with Rose?!? I know it cant be possible. But if he somehow managed to do it, I don’t know what I’ll do!”

Amethyst chipped in, “I don’t know about the fusion thing, but they’re really taking their time on this kiss.

Whatever happened after the kiss sounded very, unpleasant to the human.

Coral was very “Did he just, asked her to talk to him like a real human? Does he not know we’re not from here?” She worried as she gripped the edge of the wall.

Pearl peeped through the stone fingers’ webbing and whispered, “What are they doing!?” But she was shushed by Garnet immediately after.

Shh!

They heard more questions from Greg. “Do you, miss your home planet?” Garnet, Pearl, and Coral glanced at each other, as if the question was theirs to answer.

“No. Never.” They heard their leader’s response.

They talked about their how they felt about each other. They talked about their past expereiences and if whether not they’re missing them. At one point, Greg even asked her about the gems.

“Oh them? Those are four long stories.”

The gems tried their best to hide from their view. Except Amethyst who waved at them out in the open. She gazed onto the two and said, “I think this one’s my favorite.”

Coral glanced to Pearl as she sighed in defeat. “I think he’s her favorite too.”

The gems stayed put as the couple continued to dance on the stage. The three pondered on the changes that may come from that point on.

“They are really taking their time over there. Should we be going?”

“Wait, its almost over.” Garnet informed. Soon enough, the stage lights were turned off as Greg and Rose said goodnight to each other.

“Rose will need some company. You should ask Greg your question while they’re not occupying the same space.”

It took Coral a moment to realize the suggestion was directed at her. “I’m sorry, my question? What question?”

“It will come around when you see him. Pearl and Amethyst, let’s move.” And off the fusion went.

The two gems followed the fusion towards the temple. Coral was left alone while Greg was gathering up his supplies. She peeped and noticed no apparent emotion with him.

Greg finally got all his stuff in one go, but he could barely see the way to his van. He got spooked by Coral sitting inside his van.

“Holy-!” He screamed as he dropped his pile of supplies onto the sand. “Coral! You uh, scared me for a second.” He shakingly began to gather his fallen belongings.

Coral felt bad and offered to help. “Sorry about that, I just wanted to make sure if it’s a good time to talk. We all saw what happened back there. Are you doing okay?”

She piled up his supplies in a neat form and placed them into the van.

“Well,” He sat on the edge of the van. “We didn’t get to fuse into a giant beautiful lady if that’s what you’re talking about. But I did realize something off about this relationship.”

He gazed into the starry night and wondered how he could have missed the signs.

“It doesn’t seem like we were in an equal relationship. She’s just so beautiful and loving that I kinda looked over the things she said. Like how she treated our dates like little games or entertainments. Has she ever dated, another human being before? Are all her ex-human boyfriends treated this way?” He started to freak out as he recalled all the little details in their relationship. “Have I been, just a plaything to her? Was I just a little puppy she followed along the little barks and tricks? Do…do I even mean anything to her?” Greg started to claw on his hair as he bit his lower lip.

Coral reassured him as best as she could. “Greg, of course you meant a lot to her. Rose doesn’t just fall in love with any human. Over the past few milennials, I’ve seen her date several humans. But none of those humans were able to stand on the same level or show as much courage as you did!

“Wait, millenials?” He tried to count the number of years in a millennial. It turned out he needed a lot of hands to count that far. “How long has it been?”

“Let’s just say we’ve been around… for a while.”

He opened his left palm and mouthed “five?” To Coral.

She tried to explain how long without giving out any numbers. “Mortality is not something we worry about. What we do worry about is how its mandatory for the beings on earth. The lives on Earth are what made this planet so special. Even the plants she grew herself don’t live forever. To you, she’s this magical, beautiful, and loving alien being who just happened to look the most human out of all of us. She’s also the one with the darkest past that she could never reveal to anyone. Sometimes not even us. But that doesn’t matter to us. Our mission is to protect this planet and all its living creatures. And we’ve been doing just that since we came here.”

“We’ve witnessed the planet going through multiple eras. We’ve met sea robbers that stole and loot gold and jewelry. We’ve met Socrates and Darwin and most of the humans who ever existed. They were all cherished and adored by her, even the ones who were morally questionable. We each had different purposes in our old lives. But now, our purpose to is to protect this planet and all its living creatures. That’s why we’re here.”

"Wow," He stared in amazement. "That was so beautiful...and the perfect lyrics for a new song! It’s a little different from what I use to sing, but no harm in trying something new, right? I'll call it Immortals!" He had a pen and notepad in hand. He started to scribble down the little Speech into lyrical verses.

Coral realized he only half-listened to what she said. But it also looked like what she said did not bother him at all. So at least she has that going on with him.

"Sure, Greg. But please, please keep in mind what was said." She gently placed her arms on his shoulders to get his attention.

“Gems and humans are not as similar as you might think. Sure, we look human, but theres a huge difference between the two. I really hope you understood that after your talk with Rose.”

Greg took a minute, but he seemed to understand her intention. “Oh no I understand plenty. We talked it out and decided to take this one day at a time. This probably isnt Rose's first relationship with a human. But its my first relationship with a non-human, other than my van. It might sound crazy, but neither of us want this relationship to end.”

He raised his arms and gently nudged her arms off his shoulders. “And I completely get what you’re saying. Rose and I are too different. She and I can never be equals. One of us is a short-lived failure of a human being, while the other is this beautiful immortal alien being from literal space! How can anyone compete with that?!”

He turned and fell off his van into the sand. He got up, brushed off the sand in his face, and announced for the whole world to hear, “I’m gonna give her the best human-couples experience since she came to this planet.”

He repeated the phrase over and over again, as if trying to make it his end goal before the end of his short human life.

Coral was awstrucked, but she was also amazed at his dedication. “That’s very…thoughtful of you Greg. The best is very much all we can do.”

She looked down and started to wonder when was the last time she was as dedicated as him.

Greg collapsed into the sand knee first. Coral came out of the van to see if he was okay. She gave him a hand by grabbing him up like a toddler.

Greg blushed as Coral teased how light he was. “Can you please put me down, Coral? I’m kinda tired as it is. Haha…”

“Right, right, sorry about that.” She set him down on his feet. “So how do you plan to do that? The whole “giving her the best human-gem relationship of all time” thing?”

“Oh, uh, I don’t know honestly. But I’ll think of something. It might not be tonight, it might not be tomorrow, but it definitely won’t be tonight. I am honestly really drained after that dance.” He admitted sluggishly as he dragged his legs to the driver’s seat.

Coral followed and asked, “Where are you going at this hour?”

He started the van and leaned on the window. “I think im gonna head to my new workplace. I need a real bed to sleep in after tonight. I’ll see you guys tomorrow, okay?”

“Of course, have a nice night.” She gave a slight wave and Greg waved back from his side mirror.

He drove off into the sleepy town and drifted off to sleep on a bed.

End of Chapter 8

(A/N: Hey there to whoever's reading and probably wondering why the chapter was posted later than promised. I got kinda busy during the weekend and couldn't find the time to post the final part of the chapter.

But hey, its here now. And since you're reading this, you're probably wondering where's the drama and huge conflict in the chapter? The storyline in this chapter has been pretty flat and mild. That's because this chapter is more of a build-up for the next chapter. Most of you reading probably know what's next. So take this as a calm before the storm storyline until the hurricane hits.

The ending of this chapter could be better, but getting Greg to sleep on an actual bed was the only ending I can come up with.
