I would like to point out a few things about this clip and how it basically sets up the whole show. First of all.
It’s a Romance novel actually.
Setting up the romance part of the show being Allison and Patty
Second part the synopsis of the show basically
It’s about a woman who’s sad she’s very sad. She just wasted the last ten years of her life on this terrible marriage. It’s very depressing in the beginning. But then one day she realizes what she wants. And she has this brilliant plan. She keeps playing perfect housewife. But in the meantime-
And then here’s another important part the librarian says:
Affair with her neighbor
Which is what she does with Patty. It’s not a sexual or romantic affair or anything (yet) but there’s no denying it’s an emotional affair. They’re having an emotional affair.
Then. Another important part that applies to season 2. Especially 207.
The librarian says: Why wouldn’t she just leave.
And Allison replies with:
Maybe she doesn’t wanna leave.
Maybe this isn’t about leaving at all.
It was never about leaving. It was never about killing Kevin. It was never about Allison faking her death. It was always about Patty and Allison saving each other. And making it so they could each escape without leaving each other.
And that’s why I think that the show has to end with them finding each other again. For it to end with Patty just stuck alone again and Allison alone again would go against the whole thesis of the show. They need to find each other again and save each other. One last time. For good this time. After all. Valerie did say:
The show is about two women. And how they save each other.

it almost makes me angry how good Kevin Can F**k Himself is. it's so good. the flawless blending of genres. the deconstruction of the family sitcom. the pitch perfect performances from all the actors. the beautiful fucking slow-burn between Allison and Patty. it's so good

it’s about patty knowing kevin wasn’t going to give allison the fancy dinner she thought she was getting but not warning her away seriously for a second time. it’s about patty being selfish. it’s about patty wanting more time with the girl she just met, with the girl who gave her a smile on the worst day of her life. it’s about patty wanting just another second to catch a glimpse of that starry eyed girl at the bar. it’s about patty being given a glimpse at a new world. it’s about patty realizing she has a shot at not being alone.
it’s about patty wanting that girl to stay.

Why don't we do something stupid tonight? Why would we do something if we knew it was stupid? Because sometimes, stupid can be fun.

Okay what we’re not gonna do is trash Valerie for something out of her control. She said romantically alone cause they were!!! They were romantically alone!!! As in they were not dating anyone actively. Patty was not dating anyone. Allison was not dating anyone. She never said they weren’t in love. Valerie herself is the one who told us they were in love in the first place. Let’s remember they were cancelled prematurely and only got notice they were cancelled in time to rewrite the last three eps. But I think that the fact that they had their last words to each other be “Let’s die alone together” confirms theyre in love. That was a DIRECT callback to the bathtub scene where Allison says “Maybe we can die alone together” but this time there was no maybe. It was “LETS” confirming they’ll be together forever no matter what. And it’s a direct callback to the scene where Valerie herself said that was when Patty realized she was in love with Allison. That was a purposeful choice. And then also the fact that they spent the ENTIRE last episode pining over each other and having Patty (who never talks about her feelings) say Allison is her favorite person. Would I have liked if they had them kiss or directly say I love you? Sure. But honestly? IMO there was no way to do that in the last three eps without it feeling rushed or unearned. They just weren’t there yet. Which unfortunately is the fault of AMC. They probably would’ve gotten there in season 3. But well. What can ya do. But yeah I blame AMC entirely and I’m impressed they were able to give us the narratively satisfying finale they did considering how little notice they were given to the show ending.
