Bethany Collins: Material Fact
In 1963, The Birmingham News made the decision to mainly omit reports regarding the violence that took place during the demonstrations associated with the Birmingham Campaign (in part with the Civil Rights Movement) for fear that such reports would induce more violence. Instead, the paper filled their front pages with alternative news of the day.
Bethany Collins’ latest work, The Birmingham News, 1963 (2017), currently on view at Patron Gallery makes a strong statement about the dangers of incomplete news reporting. Working with a selection of front pages of The Birmingham News from that 1963 period in time, Collins’ has applied a blind-embossing technique onto newsprint prior to running the sheets through multiple rounds of pressings.
Though the battered and delicate prints provide an appearance that dates the work back to this tumultuous time in our country’s history, when situated in today’s environment of fake news reporting, political upheaval and contentious racial relations, her work not only makes a statement about the slippery slope of incomplete news reporting, but the instability now inherent in the media that has prompted us to ask, what is the truth?
See this and other works as part of Bethany Collins’ Material Fact exhibition at Patron Gallery (673 N Milwaukee, Chicago, IL) now through March 21, 2017.

Striking a balance between strength and simplicity, the work of Lucas Simões quite literally pressure tests the limits of his materials. Hundreds of sheets of paper hang in a suspended state, at the mercy of the pressure created by the concrete ends and steel rebar that bind them. Exhibition on view @patrongallery thru January 27, 2018. @lucassimoes #art #artist #chicago #artgallery #artexhibition #underpressure (at PATRON)
