hi everyone the aviary has until november 2024 to raise enough money to find a new location or else all the birds will be rehomed

for those of you who don’t know the aviary has been operating out of an old house for years. the house is officially falling apart and is no longer safe to house the birds. the city has completely given up on us. the deadline to find a new place is november 2024, and if we don’t raise enough money to find somewhere else, the aviary will be forced to dissolve and all of the birds will have to find new homes.

it’s not easy to find homes for 20 large parrots, many of which aren’t sociable and have health issues. there is a pair of bonded macaws that cannot be separated and can be aggressive, loud, and destructive - there are not many places for them to go. it is not going to be easy to find somewhere else to go (especially with the current real estate market in canada) but anything and everything helps. please consider donating if you can :)

Attention Zookeepers / Zoologists / Botanists / Ornithologists / Other Experts:

Could you please tell me of some trees that are completely safe for parrots? (Leaves, bark, fruit, etc. are okay for them to ingest) I have a 1.8m x 1.8m (6ft x 6ft) outdoor aviary for my cockatoo that we sit in when the weather is nice, and I’d love to put a potted live tree or two in there for her to perch on (and probably chew on, as parrots do). I live in a humid subtropical climate, so plants that do well in that type of climate are preferred, though I’m not against bringing them indoors for the winter if I need to.

I’d love pictures of the plants as well as the names if possible, so I can be sure I have the correct tree!

Husband bought a (surprise) bird: day.. idk like 8…

She likes me and pretty reliably steps up for me. I’m trying not to push her boundaries past what’s absolutely necessary. She likes hanging out with me and just listening to me talk. She’s a little loud on occasion but if I put her outside early in the morning and let her yell at chickens for an hour she seems content to mumble and clack most the rest of the day.

She didn’t come with much in her cage so I got her one of everything from the pet store. We will cycle through that and see what she likes so that I can order some nicer toys to destroy.

I have a lot of other animals that like fresh produce so chop has been pretty easy, I usually have assorted grains & fruit & veggies in the house anyways.

She reminds me a lot of a young child or a horse. The way they react to their thresholds being ignored are extremely similar.
