Doing a Parappa trilogy because somehow, someway, this game's soundtrack is still underrated. In this track, Parappa gets his license in a surprisingly jaunty tune that makes me happy every time I hear it. And it's apparently accurate to the driving school experience. My driving test will be a snap now!

Shop Fusion Collab - PaRappa the Rapper

There is a very big difference between pre-Shop Collab me and post-Shop Collab me. That difference is that I am now a huge backseat PaRappa fan LMAO.

I had the distinct honor of animating Morshu's ridiculous PaRappa rap sequence, making it a complete gameplay scenario to the best of my ability. I also edited the gameplay UI overlaying the rendered animation!

Prior to working on this section, I had never consumed any sort of PaRappa media. I immediately got to doing my research and studied the animation of PaRappa 1/2, as well as Um Jammer Lammy. It was then when I realized how fucking AWESOME this series is. I ended up falling in love with it, going as far as to watch the entirety of the PaRappa anime throughout the process of this animation. I would even watch it in the background while actively working on this section LOL.

But I digress. Work on this section started immediately after Nico and I had wrapped up with the Splatoon 3 section, meaning I had more than a baseline knowledge of Blender animation by this point. Using the reference gathered from PaRappa gameplay footage, I was tasked with animating a believable gameplay sequence to the rhythm of the section's vocals, lovingly crafted by ThisGreenDingo with a vocal performance by KoltJolt as PaRappa (who you may know from that one "i thlammed my penith in the car door" animation LOL)!

This was so. Much. Fun. I remember being so worried about the animations looking janky or broken due to the limitations of these rigs, but as I progressed I realized that the jank is what gives PaRappa its soul, and the only way to make it true to the source material is to embrace it.

Once again, it wouldn't be possible without the help of my teammate Nico, who took care of the modeling/rigging, with Morshu character art from our teammate, Party Rock. This part was so dumb and silly but these two did such a great job with helping to bring it to life.

With PS4-based emulators for the NES and Game Boy already well underway, as well as work on Steam-on-PS4 capabilities via Linux, Sony's latest hacked console is already shaping up to be a clearinghouse for retro-hardware mimicry. Meanwhile, many in the PS4 hacking community are seeking out a copy of the Asia-exclusive Loco Roco 2 Remastered for the PS4 to see if there's anything to be learned from the PSP emulator that presumably lurks on that disc. Others in the GBATemp thread, though, warn that a long list of PSP games apparently don't yet work via PaRappa's "PSPHD" emulator, and it may require more massaging to get arbitrary games to fit (KiiWii suggests the emulator may have a built-in file-size limit of 880 MB gumming things up). In the days since that discovery, KiiWii has posted purported pictures of Loco Roco running via the PS4, and other hackers have shown Patapon, Namco Museum, and a PSP dev kit test app supposedly running via the PS4. We're reminded of similar fan-made texture packages that can already improve the look of everything from N64 and PS3 games to Wii U games via PC-based emulators. The only apparent difference in the PS4 remaster is an included 4K texture package featuring redrawn art that makes the game look good on a modern television.

Earlier this week, GBATemp user KiiWii posted his discovery that the PS4 game uses an in-built PSP emulator to run a copy of the 2007 PSP version of PaRappa rather than running new code specifically ported to the PS4. The PS4 game in question is PaRappa the Rapper Remastered, a bare-bones, upscaled re-release of the '90s PlayStation rhythm game.

Now, it seems a PSP emulator buried in a "remastered" PS4 release could provide a new way to get upscaled versions of the portable system's games running on your TV.
