Fish tank update!

WE HAVE BABIES! Two of the biggest females are berried and at current count it seems everyone is still present and accounted for! No deaths whatsoever!

The floating plants have grown in so lush I'm going to need to start removing some soon. But the female killifish finally came out to play! I was worried she might be starving with the males constant harassment, but by the look of her round little belly she's been getting enough to eat.

APLOCHEILUS LINEATUS (KILLIFISH)

The golden wonder is the most commonly available killifish in the aquarium trade. It is a captive-bred color variant of the striped panchax Aplocheilus lineatus. Wild fish are occasionally available, usually from India, where the species is relatively common in the central and southern parts of the country, and sometimes from Sri Lanka, where it is also native, but seems to be less common. There is a great deal of variation among the wild population. The basic color pattern is quite attractive, and features prominent black vertical lines, hence the name lineatus. Some individuals exhibit a fair amount of red, and others exhibit a fair amount of yellow. One can assume that the golden wonder was selectively bred from yellow individuals. Basic care is the same regardless of color pattern. This species does best in slightly acidic water, with temperatures in the low 70s, though it will tolerate a wide range of water conditions. They typically hang out near the surface, where they feed on insects in the wild. They adapt to prepared foods in the aquarium quite easily, with floating foods being preferred. It is important to keep a tight cover on the aquarium, as this species, like most killifish, is an exceptional jumper. Males grow to 4 inches, with females slightly smaller. Males are generally more colorful and more slender bodied. These are suitable for community tanks with similarly sized fishes, as they'll eat any fish that can fit into their mouths- be sure their companions are large enough not to be eaten. They may also nip the fins of long-finned species, so their tankmates should be chosen with some care. Breeding is best accomplished in a species tank, and the addition of live foods will greatly improve spawn production. They spawn in the typical mop-spawning-killifish manner, laying a few eggs each day in either artificial mops or fine-leaved plants. The eggs are incubated in water and hatch in about 10 to 14 days, depending on temperature. The fry can accept newly hatched baby brine shrimp as soon as they're free-swimming, and are easy to raise. The parents will eat the fry, so the eggs should be removed and hatched in a separate container.

A Collection of Coldwater fish (Part 1)

So I know fishblr loves their tropical fish- for good reason! But I knew there had to be plenty of beautiful coldwater fish as well, so I looked some up! In addition to celestial pearl danios, golden wonder killifish, and many barbs, of which information is plentiful, here are some freshwater coldwater fish that you may not be aware exist.

  Scleromystax barbatus, or the Banded Cory. 4 inches maximum length, 61 – 76 °F.

Oryzias latipes, or the Japanese Rice Fish. 1.4 inches maximum length, 61 – 72 °F. 

Aphyosemion splendopleure, or Splendid Killifish. 2.4 inches maximum length, 72 – 79 °F. (Not really that cold but I had to share this one. Splendid, indeed!)

Aplocheilus blockii, or Green Panchax Killifish. 1.7 inches maximum length,  68 – 83 °F. 

Aphyosemion striatum, or Red-striped Killifish. Just under 2 inches maximum length,  68 – 79 °F.

Epiplatys dageti, or Red-chinned Panchax Killifish. 1.7 inches maximum length,  68 – 86 °F.

Hi, stocking anon again! Thanks so much for your response, I'm glad to hear that kuhli's and bettas go so well together, I'll definitely bare that in mind. I'm not so sure I'm ready for any fish that requires pristine conditions, as I'm still learning a lot about fishkeeping. If I was to not get a betta, I'm guessing I'd have a lot more options for fish? Is there any you'd recommend for a community tank? Thanks so much again, I really appreciate your help!

Yeah, if you skip the Betta that would really expand your options, honestly. It would give you too many for me to describe here, actually, haha!

If you still go for the Kuhli loaches (caresheet here) that leaves you with room for a colorful schooling species in the middle water layer like you mentioned you liked. I’ve got a few listed here.

You could also see if there are any small top dwelling fish you like. Honey gourami, some peaceful-ish species of killifish like the red-chinned panchax, that kind of thing.

Mod @thebrackishtank​ Assuming you have a Striped Panchax/Golden Wonder Killifish, then almost definitely not. Panchax are part of the family Aplocheilidae whereas Platies are part of the livebearer family Poeciliidae. Both are in the same order, Cyprinodontiformes, but the chance of successful breeding of two animals in different families is very slim.

Killifish เป็นชื่อสามัญของปลาน้ำจืดและน้ำกร่อยขนาดเล็กหลายชนิด ในอันดับ Cyprinodontiformes ซึ่งเป็นปลาที่ออกลูกเป็นตัว นับ 1,000 กว่าชนิด ในแทบทุกทวีปทั่วโลก แต่ปลาคิลลี่ฟิชจะเป็นปลาที่แพร่ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยการวางไข่

โดยปลาคิลลี่ฟิช มีลักษณะโดยทั่วไป จะเป็นปลาขนาดเล็กที่มีสีสันสวยงาม โดยเฉพาะในตัวผู้ ในหลากหลายพฤติกรรม ในบางชนิดจะหากินและดำรงชีวิตอยู่บนผิวน้ำ, บางชนิดหากินและดำรงชีวิตอยู่ระดับพื้นน้ำ และบางชนิดจะรวมตัวกันเป็นฝูง และบางชนิดจะว่ายน้ำอย่างกระจัดกระจาย

โดยมีลักษณะการวางไข่หลากหลายแตกต่างออกไป เช่น วางไข่ทิ้งไว้ในพื้นดินและมีวงจรชีวิตที่สั้น หรือวางไข่ไว้กับใบของไม้น้ำ

สำหรับในประเทศไทย มีปลาเพียงชนิดเดียวที่เข้าข่ายปลาคิลลี่ฟิช คือ ปลาหัวตะกั่ว (Aplocheilus panchax) ซึ่งอยู่ในวงศ์ Aplocheilidae ที่พบได้ทุกแหล่งน้ำทั่วทุกภาค

ปลาคิลลี่ฟิช พวกมันเป็นปลาที่ผมคิดว่ามหัศจรรย์และน่าสนใจ นอกจากความหลากหลายของสายพันธุ์ของพวกมันแล้ว ยังมีเรื่องของการกำเนิดลืมตาขึ้นมาดูโลกของเหล่าลูกปลาคิลลี่ฟิช และสุดๆไปกับความเป็นอยู่ในถิ่นอาศัยของพวกมันซึ่งอา���จะแตกต่างกันสุดขั้วในแต่ละท้องถิ่น สุดขั้วชนิดที่หลายคนไม่คาดคิดเลย ดังนั้นเราลองมาทำความรู้จักประวัติของปลาคิลลี่ฟิช(Killifish)กันก่อนครับว่าพวกมันเป็นมาอย่างไร

Killifish หากฟังเฉพาะชื่อเสียงเรียงนามของมันแล้วผมคิดว่าหลายคนอาจจะนึกถึงปลาที่ดุร้าย เป็นนักฆ่าเช่นเดียวกับชื่อ Kill ที่แปลเป็นภาษาไทยตรงกับคำว่า”ฆ่า” และหากเพื่อนๆบางท่านที่เคยเลี้ยงปลาชนิดนี้ก็อาจจะเคยเห็นว่าพวกมันมีความก้าวร้าวอยู่บ้างซึ่งอาจจะทำให้หลายๆคนพลานคิดไปว่าชื่ Kill ของมันน่าจะมาจากพฤติกรรมเหล่านั้น แต่ในความจริงแล้วพฤติกรรมที่เห็นไม่ใช่ประเด็นที่มาของชื่อ Kill ของพวกมันครับ แต่ชื่อ Killifish ได้มาเมื่อช่วงศตวรรษที่ 16-17 เมื่อมีชาวดัตช์ได้อพยพไปอาศัยอยู่ตามแนวชายฝั่งตะวันออกของอเมริกา ซึ่งในบริเวณนั้นจะมีแอ่งน้ำขนาดเล็กซึ่งชาวดัตช์เรียกแหล่งน้ำพวกนี้ว่า “คิล (Kil)” และก็เรียกปลาที่อาศัยอยู่ในแหล่งน้ำนี้ว่า “Kil Vissen”นั่นเองครับ

คิลลี่ฟิชในวงศ์ Aplocheilus ปลาคิลลี่ฟิชนั้น มีอยู่มากมายหลากหลายสายพันธุ์และมีกระจายอยู่ทุกทวีปในโลกยกเว้นที่ทวีปออสเตรเลียที่ยังไม่มีการค้นพบปลาชนิดนี้ คิลลี่ฟิชจัดอยู่ในปลาประเภท Cyprinodontiformes ซึ่งเป็นปลาที่วางไข่ ซึ่ง Cyprinodontiformes สามารถแบ่งออกได้อีก 3กลุ่ม คือ viviparous ,ovoviviparous และ oviparous โดยในปลาสกุลเหล่านี้จะประกอบไปด้วย วงศ์ Aplocheilidae, Cyprinodontidae, Fundulidae, Nothobranchiidae, Profundulidae, Rivulidae และ Valenciidae โดยจะพบทั้งหมดราว 1,270 สายพันธุ์ โดยวงศ์ใหญ่ที่สุดคือ Rivulidae ซึ่งมีอยู่ถึง 320สายพันธุ์ สำหรับทวีปที่พบความหลากหลายของปลาคิลลี่ฟิชมากที่สุดคือ ทวีปแอฟริกา ซึ่งสายพันธุ์ที่พบและได้รับความนิยมก็เช่น Aphyosemion, Fundulopanchax, Epiplatys และ Aplocheilichthys เป็นต้น สำหรับทวีปเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เองก็มีคิลลี่ฟิชอยู่เช่นกัน โดยส่วนมากจะพบอยู่ตามพื้นที่การเกษตร เช่นนาข้าว ในประเทศปากีสถาน,ประเทศเวียดนาม,มาเลเซีย,เนปาลและศรีลังกา ซึ่งเป็นปลาคิลลี่ฟิชในวงศ์ Aplocheilus

เพื่อที่เราจะมาทำความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับคิลลี่ฟิชก่อนที่จะเริ่มเลี้ยงนั้น เรามาเรียนรู้กันก่อนว่าคิลลี่ฟิชสามรถแบ่งออกเป็นสองกลุ่มหลักๆ ตามวงจรชีวิตของพวกมันเอง

กลุ่มแรกคือ กลุ่มที่มีอายุไขตามฤดูกาล (Annual Killies)

ปลาคิลลี่ฟิชกลุ่มนี้จะมีอยู่ราว10% ของปลาชนิดนี้ ซึ่งจะมีอายุไขเฉลี่ยไม่เกิน 1ปี ปลากลุ่มนี้จะอาศัยอยู่ในแหล่งน้ำที่ค่อนข้างแห้งดังนั้นพวกมันจะออกไข่และฝังไว้ในพื้นดินในช่วงฤดูร้อน (Bottom Spawner) เพื่อรอที่จะฝักเป็นตัวในช่วงฤดูฝนในปีถัดไป โดยไข่ปลากลุ่มนี้จะมีอายุประมาณ2-6เดือน ซึ่งหากมีการเ็บรักษาไว้ในสภาวะที่ดีและเหมาะสมมันอาจจะมีอายุไปถึง2ปี ปลากลุ่มนี้เมื่อฟักออกจากไข่จะเติบโตอย่างรวดเร็วและเข้าสู่วัยเจริญพันธุ์ในช่วง2-6เดือน และมีบางชนิดอาจจะเข้าสู่วัยเจริญพันธุ์เมื่อมีอายุเพียง 5สัปดาห์เท่านั้น ซึ่งปลากลุ่มนี้จะมีลักษณะลำตัวสั้นและกว้าง หางกลม มีสีสันเข้มสลับลวดลายบนลำตัว เช่นสกุล Nothobranchius และ Fundulosoma

กลุ่มที่สอง คือกลุ่มที่ไม่จำกัดฤดูกาล (Non Annual Killies)

ในส่วนของปลาคิลลี่ฟิชกลุ่มนี้จะมีอายุที่ยืนยาวกว่ากลุ่มแรก ซึ่งบางสายพันธุ์อาจจะมีอายุยืนได้ถึง 5ปี ในธรรมชาติ ซึ่งก็ลบความคิดว่าปลาคิลลี่ฟิชมีอายุสั้นลงไปได้ สำหรับปลาคิลลี่ฟิชในกลุ่มนี้เมื่อพวกมันออกจากไข่อาจจะต้องใช้ระยะเวลานานถึ 6เดือนกว่าที่เข้าสู่วัยเจริญพันธุ์ โดยเมื่อผสมพันธุ์แล้วตัวเมียจะเป็นผู้เลือกสถานที่ในการวางไข่ ซึ่งการวางไข่ของปลาคิลลี่ฟิชกลุ่มนี้จะแบ่งออกเป็นสองลักษณะ คือ ลักษณะแรกเป็นพวกวางไข่ติดตามพืชน้ำหรือรากไม้ใต้น้ำ (Plant Spawner) และอีกกลุ่มคือพวกที่สามารถวางไข่ติดพืชน้ำหรือวางไข่ฝังไว้ในดินก็ได้ (Switch Spawner) ซึ่งการวางไข่ของปลากลุ่มนี้จะขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพแวดล้อมที่มันอยู่อาศัยนั่นเอง สำหรับปลาในกลุ่มนี้จะมีลักษณะลำตัวกลมยาวมีหางแฉก ชอบอาศัยอยู่ในแหล่งน้ำขังตลอดปีหรือแหล่งน้ำไหล
